About last night ...

posted by Mike Boone at 7h31 EST on Nov 2

Maybe, as Joël Bouchard suggested on RDS, the stars are in alignment for your Montreal Canadiens.

They spend half the night in the Minnesota penalty box and still manage to beat one of the best teams in the Western Conference.

Then, against oe of the worst teams in the league, the Canadiens four goals in seven and a half minutes, staging a comeback reminiscent of The Game against the Rangers.

As was the case last February, the fifth goal – in this case, the winner – was scored by Alex Kovalev. He didn't slide on his back this time.

Kovy, Kovy, Kovy. Is he a beauty or what?

How many times does the first star of the game score twice, pick up two assists – and give the puck away SEVEN times.

Canadid, as always, in his post-game remarks, Kovalev said other teams would "destroy" the Canadiens if they played as badly as they did for 40 minutes ast night.

Kovy cited New Jersey as a team that probably wouldn't have blown a 4-1 lead.

But the Islanders are not the Devils. And the Wild, who had three 5-on-3s, were not the Detroit Red Wings.

So maybe the stars are beginning to spell out a big "CH" in the sky.

After 10 games, the Canadiens have one loss in regulation – fewest in the NHL.

They lead the league in goal differential at plus-13.

And after a Sunday off and off-ice training tomorrow afternoon, the team returns to practice Tuesday morning. There's much to discuss and a lot to work on, but at least the whole city won't be spending the week moping about a loss to the lowly Islanders.

The Canadiens scored the first goal last night and figured it would be easy.

Wrong.

Through two periods they were outhit, outhustled, outskated and outworked. The Islanders were consistently first on the puck, won every battle, controlled the neutral zone and gained the Canadiens' blueline with dismaying ease.

One stat said it all: The home team did not take a minor penalty until  12 minutes into the second period.

You don't have to hook players who aren't skating. You don't have to hold players who aren't moving their feet. You don't have to cross-check players who won't fight for positions. You don't have to trip players who aren't about to beat you. And you don't have to elbow or board players who give the puck up without a fight.

Several brutal line changes, an indicator that the guys on the bench are not alert and into the game.

Zone coverage? Puck support? As the outnumbered Islanders' fans at the Nassau Coliseum might say, Fuhgedaboudit!

When Frans Nielsen scores two goals from close in, there's something rotten in the state of Dane marking.

Look, the superior roster won the game last night. The Canadiens have the firepower to get 16 shots and four goals in 20 minutes against a young, nervous, non-playoff team.

The Canadiens are abundantly talented, but there will be night, many nights when skill won't be enough. They'll need hard work, dedication and intensity  to beat teams better than the Islanders ... and that meanss almost every team in the league.

Random observations:

• Christopher Higgins should stay on the Saku Koivu-Alex Tanguay line.

• They have a problem with righhanded faceoffs:Robert Lang was 2-10, Maxim Lapierre 4-6. And lefty Tomas Plekanec was 8-13.

• Aside from faceoffs – and he was winning them in the third period – Plekanec was brilliant. The big line is coming to life.

• Opponents got a great deal on screwing up the Brothers Kostitsyn: Injure one, get one free. But AK46 turned on the jets to setup Pleks' second goal, and if he's back maybe Sergei will come to ife.

• Guy Carbonneau doesn't know what to do with Georges Laraque. He played seven shifts, 5:21. It's becoming obvious that the Canadiens' best energ line is Max centring Tom Kostopoulos and Mathieu Dandenault.

• Another rough night for Ryan O'Byrne, who was minus-2. The big galoot is a work in progress, but I really wonder how much upside he's got.

• Carey Price was furious with himself after the Jon Sim goal. But how about those saves in the final minute?

• Maybe Alex Kovalev should be cut in every game.

• How about five even-strength goals for a team that lived and died with its power play for the last two seasons?

Canadiens are 8-1-1. Their top line of 2007-'08, MIA since the season began, had nine points last night.

Twenty minutes of hockey, and the Canadiens saved us all a rough week.

But if they play like that at the ACC on Saturday ...

Yup, Go Obama!

Thank you USA.. and take that higgy!

"Nice" to see Laraque wrestle again. John Kordic would have kicked his *** and was a better skater/player. An aging, over-the-hill goon - think Darren Langdon without the sense of humour. Terrible off-season signing.

Living in Calgary, I see a ton of Western Conference games. If the Habs put together lacklustre efforts against teams like Calgary, SJ, Anaheim or Dallas, they'll lose handily. These are teams that for the most part play an aggressive forechecking, in-your-face game. They also all have players who can score, and play it tough.

I've been catching a few of the Flames games. Every time I see them, they do a little work and then rely entirely on Kipper. The Kings were running hoops around them while he stood on his head to keep them in the win. Of course there's only so much he can keep out of his net... We say the same about the Habs, but they're extremely guilty of being goalie dependant. Dallas, oy. My favourite western team... They're completely falling apart and Turks can't seem to stop anything these days. Granted he just publicly let them have it with all the bad defense he's surrounded in who either tip the shots or completely screen him. Either way, they've got serious problems.

This is why I have been saying every since last year that finishing number one in the weaker Eastern conference is not THAT big of an achievement. Respectable, but it should not be used everytime to stick to to nay sayers.

Wasn't one of Lang's strenghs his faceoff ability? He looked terrible last night. New Blog: http://coasttocoasthabs.blogspot.com/

I believe you are right as this was discussed here at the time of his acquisition. Right now the centers success rates are as follows: Koivu 58.3% versus 52.3% last year. Lapierre 55.0% versus 49.1% last year. Plekanec 53.3% versus 49.4% last year. Lang 46.5% versus 53.1% in 76 games last year with Chicago. Smolinski had a success rate of 51.8% last year.

Just watched the game on my DVR - wow, what a team. Imagine if we played a full 60 minutes. Danis was not sharp the entire game, but we failed to challenge him in the first 40. We showed a lot of character and the game was reminiscent of The Comeback (though that game was far sweeter in my view). Consistency will be the key for us - we have the skill, but we need the consistent work ethic. We can't feel entitled, we have to work hard on every shift. Other thoughts: BGL has been underwhelming so far; JG does his job and does it without fanfare or flash; there may be some value to putting AK46 and SK74 together more often, like on 4 on 4 or the PP, perhaps so SK74 can get re-energized; I have a feeling we could see Lats back with Max on the 4th, and Kosto with Lang and SK74, which worked (surprisingly) well early on; Valentenko's departure may lead BG to acquire another depth D, perhaps the elusive 4th D. FYI - Grabs has two tonight for the Laffs

Comparing the Habs of 08/09 to last years version through 10 games. 08/09 listed first Record 8-1-1(17 points) 6-2-2(14 points) Total Goals For 37-35 (+2) Against 24-27(+3) Even Strength Goals For 25-16 (+9) Against 14-17 (+3) Power Play For 8-17(-9) Against 9-10 (+1) Kovalev, Plekanac and AK46 have scored 9 goals, 1 on the PP Tanguay,Koivu and Lats have scored 11 goals, 3 on the PP Lang, SK46 and Higgins(or Kostopolous) have scored 6, 3 on the PP Lapierre,Laraque, Dandeneault,Begin,Chipchura and Kostopoulous have score 2 goals but only 1 at even strength after ten games Kostopoulos score while playing with Lang and SK74.

Ed's picture
The Habs continue to improve from one season to the next. Imagine if the PP gets back on track. Right now the increase in even strength goals compensates for the decline in PP goals. The improvement in even strength goals for and against totals 12. This is reflected in the players' +/-'s where Koivu is tied for the league lead in +/- at +9. There are a few other Habs doing very well in this category as well. A look at the last page shows Schneider with a league worst of -13. There are some other interesting players on the last page, e.g., Fabian Brunnstrom, Todd Bertuzzi. http://www.nhl.com/ice/app?service=page&page=playerstats&fetchKey=20092A...

Chris's picture
One could argue that the even-strength goal improvement is a crucial requirement for the team to have any chance in the Stanley Cup playoffs. The league can tell us until it is blue in the face that the rules don't change, but we all know they do. Over-reliance on the power play was a vulnerability that they have addressed with better team balance this year.

Canadiens DVD Released November 4 http://wwweyesontheprize.blogspot.com/2008/11/canadiens-dvd-released-nov... I gather that many Canadiens fans are anxious for this one! To get anxious myself for this release, I scanned You Tube for some vintage clips and came up with these beauties. Perhaps the oldest colour film of the Canadiens is from a hand held camera in 1956. These final minutes of game 5 against Detroit is the beginning of the Canadiens 5 Cup run. Near the end of the clip, you can see the Canadiens players hoist coach Toe Blake on the shoulders before Rocket Richard carries the Cup off the ice.

RetroMikey's picture
I, for one will not buy this DVD. Where are the Cup clinching games of 1959, 1976, and 1978 not added to this overpriced set? I know the fans voted but the Marketing Department should have added these 3 important games as well. It would have been great to show clips of the 75th anniversary special night game (Auriel Joliat skates on the ice, very heartwarming to see), the Lafleur Retirement name game, Beliveau Retirement ceremony, etc. What a joy it would be if the Marketing Department of the Habs includes a special 2 DVD bonus which includes raw vintage clips and from important ceremonies at the Montreal forum as well. Sad to see that they don't include the classic 75th anniversary video that came out on video back in 1985 produced by longtime CBC host of the Fifth Estate, Bob McKeown and the famous 30 minute Highlight reels from our CUp winning years that go back to 1953 produced by Chetwynd Films and Molson Breweries later on. Most of these games I have on video and will one day convert them on DVD. I'll buy the Habs monopoly game instead. I'll have more use out of it than this disappointing DVD set produced by Warner Video. I would love to have the 30 minute highlights of our Cup winning years on DVD if anyone has these. Please send me an e-mail. "We will win the Cup only with Carey Price in the nets"

Yes, the 1971 and 1973 Stanley Cup finals when the Habs played Chicago in both series but not to include the 1959, 1965, 1976, and 1978 finals which are available? YES! Higgins should definitely stay on the Koivu line! Of course he should. I can't figure why anyone ever thought otherwise. Lats can play the same role on any line.

• Guy Carbonneau doesn't know what to do with Georges Laraque. He played seven shifts, 5:21. It's becoming obvious that the Canadiens' best energ line is Max centring Tom Kostopoulos and Mathieu Dandenault. I think this is the best thing Boone mentions. I disagree with Dandenault, I'd rather dress Begin but Laraque can't keep up with this team. I read a lot of b.s. from some knowledgeable hab fans spouting that Laraque was more than a goon, I like the guy, he adds something to the team but he's a goon with a capital G.

Laraque is not there to intimidate teams as classic goons sometime do... he is used as an enforcer to impose respect and to derailled goonerie tactics that might be used against our team... and doest it in ways that good and tough players a la Kostopoulos cant do. He missed all of training camp and played but a few games with fewer individual shifts than the few shifts normally assigned to the 4th line players..... is not nearly in game shape as the others ought to be by now and we shoudn't expect him to be at this point yet.

twocents's picture
ebk, Based on what we have seen so far I have to agree with you. Hopefully, what others said before the season does ends up proving to be true. I remember him in Edmonton when he started out and he certainly looked more capable of being involved in the play and being effective. Perhaps this whole groin injury thing is still taking a considerable toll on his play. I hope there's some explanation for his play so far and I hope he does eventually prove able to take a regular 4th line shift as advertised.

me too

BGL can play lots better than he has shown. But we're talking fourth line on the Habs. Different center and might be a different story.

I must also agree, last year he was in much better shape and had shifts with Crosby or Malkin and didn't stink the place out but so far this year he definitely isn't as agile so lets hope time solves this problem.

Note to Exit 716 who posted below: In the Boston and Dallas game, Lucic did not get a chance to fight his own battle, as he had just been checked from behind by Avery, and Savard was on Avery in a flash. As for Julien being a goon coach, just read what Mike Modano had to say about his team's performance last night. He called it idiotic, stupid and embarrassing. http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/spt/hockey/stars/stories/110... I hope that the Canadiens will respond in a physical manner when called upon, just as the Bruins did last night. I know they can, because we saw it several times last year. The Habs, depite their record, have not played the best at times. This week's break could be a good time for them to refocus, and they better be ready for the Blue Jackets on Friday night, and especially the leafs on Saturday night. It's their 2nd trip to Toronto already, and we remember they won the first game 6-1. I'm hoping for a repeat, but the leafs have proven they are a hard working team who can't be taken lightly.

nice post, Ed

The coming break to refocus ? We just had a 5 day break last week and Carbo lost that opportunity already to make a whole out of our parts.... our game lacked the cohesion you find in teams following a clearly defined system.... do we play the more passive trap style of the Devils or do we play the get it to them fast skating style of the Wings... our fundamentals are diffuse and we lack identity and consistance... teams have dictate the course of events on too many occasions and we have turned to Price for bailing us out on too many occasions.... our shots on goal have been no more than the one of our opponents against us thus far and those teams were not particularly the best teams in the league neither.... hopefully Carbo will come up with a better product and a better team a the end of the next coming break than he did last time..... it will make watching hochey that much more enjoyable.

doesn't your post make his point?

Yes it support Ed's point just as yours did but it also tells that I was disapointed with the outcome of the similard break we had just a week ago.... a break that I had hoped would have make a difference but didn't..... I questioned why the last break didn't.... I also propose an explanation behind the malaise I saw in our game in the hope of stimulating discussions about it from the fans of the game like ED and yourselfs and the others..... that was my intention anyhow.

thanks for the clarification, I'm suffering from Steeler withdrawl and might not be thinking clearly.

Bill H's picture
Hopefully the Habs won't take the Leafs too lightly next Saturday. The Leafs have been scoring in bunching and beating NJD and NYR last 2 times out. It'll be a treat for us here in Toronto to be able to watch that game. After the loss at the Summit (didn't any one tell them they shouldn't lose because I was there?) they better win this one for me.

Thanks Ed, I see the various links to stories and the link to the CanWest Montreal Canadiens page. But I am just wondering about the actual sports section of today's Gazette. On weekdays and Saturdays there is a 'Sports' link on the left side of the page under the 'Inside The Gazette' banner along with other links for news, insight, arts and life ect. That link takes you to an electronic version of the days sports section and often includes little articles that don't usually get mentioned on the main page.

Allow me to be a bit of a contrarian here. The sky isn't falling yet. There are times in all our lives when we can learn lessons from "close calls" even if the worst never actually happened. You don't need to suffer third-degree burns as a toddler to understand that the heating element on the stove sure was hot and you shouldn't do that again. You don't have to crash your car and kill someone else or yourself to realize that you shouldn't have had that third or fourth beer before getting behind the wheel. Sometimes you luck out, tempt fate with a close call, and learn your lesson. And okay, maybe the Canadiens are tempting fate when they continue to poke at the hot stove again and again, but I do think they are learning their lesson here, especially when you see how they came out in that third period and listen to what Kovalev was saying post-game. Good teams can win ugly and they can overcome adversity, bad efforts, etc. I think it might be too early for this game to be considered a turning point of any sorts, but wasn't last year's comeback against the Rangers a real turning point? There are OTHER lessons, positive lessons, that the team can take away from this. No, you don't get to play against the Islanders most nights and you don't get to light up Danis every night either, however... the Canadiens were down 4-1 going into the third and they WON THE GAME. That should continue to give team confidence (hopefully not overconfidence) that they can overcome whatever obstacle stands in their way. This is a team that has now come back from a 5-0 deficit last year and a 4-1 deficit this year to win games they should not have won. Those points will be very valuable at the end of this season. I'm just going to enjoy this start of the season. I don't want to feel guilty about enjoying the team's success because we've suffered through so many seasons where WE were the team that was winning 4-1 and ended up losing the game. We were the ones who played a good 40 minutes and then died in that last 20 minutes. Killer instinct and finishing strong are good lessons to learn and good traits to have. I'm going to be drinking from the glass that's half *full* of tasty Canadiens goodness. I am fairly confident that the glass won't be full of 10-0 wins every game so I'm going to enjoy what I have. We're all shell-shocked by the team that got off to such a good start years ago with smoke and mirrors and then fell apart after that flu epidemic that spread through the team. This ain't that same team. This one has WAY more weapons and experience. Sometimes when you've got a special team with a special mission, you get these sort of breaks. Sometimes you can tempt fate and still come out ahead. I wonder, if in 1993 after the Canadiens 3rd straight OT win, if there were folks out there wondering aloud if this was the sort of way the Canadiens wanted to win games in the playoffs? Did they feel the same way or even care by the time the Canadiens won their 10th straight OT game? That's when the Canadiens were drinking from that Stanley Cup bowl *half full* of champagne. Lesson learned. /\\ike GO HABS GO!

Habsrule1's picture
Excellent post Mike. I was thinkng along those lines. If we win 16 games exactly like this in the playoffs, do we not still win the Cup? I'm sure the Habs will get better, and again, they have not played all that great too often this year and they are 8-1-1. I'm happy. Chris's picture
You are correct. But like last year, this team has a couple of glaring flaws that, if not corrected, will sink them just as surely as they were done in by the Flyers last season. For me, the Canadiens have emphatically not been playing well at all. Its a testament to the skill of the team that they are still winning while not playing well, but that WILL bite them in the butt eventually. You can beat the weaker teams in the NHL while not at your best. But there is little to no chance that they are taking down the likes of the Rangers, Devils, Stars, Red Wings, Sabres or Ducks in a seven-game series playing this poorly. The Canadiens of 1986 and 1993 may not have been the best teams of those seasons, but they shared the fact that they really didn't make many mistakes in those playoff runs. Everything came together. This team is the opposite...they ARE one of the best teams in the league, but are making so many absolutely stupid mistakes on the ice that they are letting some much weaker teams hang around.

Habsrule1's picture
Very good points all around Chris. I hope they can bring their level of play up to their opponent's, but i'm a bit tired of them bring it down to their opponent's! Hopefully, they are learning from these early lacklustre efforts so they happen less and less....and not at all very, very soon. "I can't hear what Jeremy(Roenick) is saying because my Stanley Cup rings are in my ears" - Patrick Roy Go Habs Go!! Habsrule

Quick thoughts on the game. Islanders played as well as they could for 40 minutes, Montreal played about as bad as they could, hence the 4-1 score. I think they were working ok, just that they(Montreal) were not working very smart and were trying to do to much as individuals. That was the biggest thing I noticed, Islanders were playing a good team game, Montreal wasn't. Then the whole thing blew up and the Habs blew the Islanders off the ice, what a sight. This team when it gets going is as unstoppable as a fat man headed to a Burger King! What can you say about Kovalev, the man is simply amazing. People harp on his turnover but I'll take the end result. What you are going to get on Picasso for spilling a little paint on the way to his masterpiece. Relax folks, Alex is the best player this team has had since the Lafleur days. Nice to see Plekanec and AK46 get some results. I thought the whole line as played OK this season but didn't have anything to show for it. That line is among the top 5 lines in the league when it's going and when it's not, it's still pretty damn good. Boone mentions O'Byrne struggling. Which I agree to a point. Last year he played much better than he has so far this year. However, I disagree that he needs to be sent down or even sat down. He is still the best alternative as a 6th Dman the Habs have, they team has still not lost a game that he has played in, so I think we can live with the mistakes of a young rookie. Better playing someone who is 24 and making mistakes than someone who is why past his prime and still looking like a rookie defensively most nights. The kid has some upside to get better, the other one doesn't! Boone also mentions O'Byrne upside. I agree he will never be a top pairing defenseman, he doesn't have the skill set for that. But last year, when paired with Hamrlik, they formed a pretty formidable pairing. The last 40 games, O'Byrne played pretty well. I think he's going to end up being a much bigger version of Josh Gorges. Anyone remember how bad Gorges looked in Montreal his first year and early last year. Patience people, the kid is going to be a decent NHL hockey player before he is done. Time to go watch the NFL, no Steelers today, so I get to check out a few other teams. And a shout out to all you Calgary people, thanks, your Stampeders gave me and all Rider fans a nice present Saturday. A playoff game in Regina is something to experience. Closest thing the US college football I've witnessed. It's a nuthouse. Let's just hope the idiots who ruined the last Lion game have learned their lesson. oops, maybe not so quick, sorry

Steelers!? NO, lol, go for my Cleveland Browns!

The Browns, ouch, my condolences. :) Actually, I don't mind them. I like Derek Anderson and Braylon Edwards a bunch. Kellen Winslow is an asshole, though.

RetroMikey's picture
I hope you are right about Ryan O'Byrne but I tend to disagree, he is not the best 6th DMan for the Habs. I see Ryan still has his work in order to make it on the team. Habs gambled by drafting a Junior B player in hopes he would be that big brusing defenceman we need. Unless he improves, he will be a major flop. On game nights, I feel Carbonneau will go on a rotation basis between Brisebois, the veteran and O'Byrne. Whoever shows the intensity and desire at practices will be selected by Carbonneau based on his assessment. For fans to say Carbonneau is putting Brisebois in the lineup to attain his 1000th game is abslolute ludicrous! Brisebois has the heart and willingness to play still. I like that in a guy who wants to wear the CH with pride and give 100%. Chelios is the same situation in Detroit. The guy wants to play and if he is the 6th DMAn on Detroit, so be it. I see no one complaining among the players or fans in Detroit when Chelios is their 6th man and taking a place on the roster in place of a prospect. How many HIO fans would complain if Chelios played for us and took the spot of O'Byrne? Not many. "We will win the Cup only with Carey Price in the nets"

Mikey, I also have heart and willingness to play. That would not make me the top 6th dman on the habs or any NHL team for that matter. I also see no indidication that OB does not give his 100% or doesn't work hard at practices. While they are winning and it's early in the season they should give OB as much chance as possible. They guy needs to know that should he make a mistake he will not be benched or sent to the box. You'd be surprised to know how much better players play knowing they have support and confidence of the coach. At this moment Breezer and OB are at the same level in terms of their effectiveness and usefulness. The difference is that Breeze is (god I am hoping here) playing his last year and OB is just beginning his career. If he continues to stink out the joint after having played regularly and showing any improvement, then it's one thing. But give him a chance... same chance that was give to Latendress or Lapierre.

Brisebois on his best day couldn't carry Chris Chelios jock strap, now or then,so I don't think it makes your point.

AMEN.

The problem is that O'Byrne couldn't carry YOUR jock strap right now, so he's going to struggle to get any confidence-vote from Carbonneau. When a defensive defenceman struggles as mightily in his own zone as O'Byrne is, he is pretty much a lame duck. Brisebois, for all his faults, can at least pass the puck and get a point shot through in the offensive zone, and that is what the team is missing right now with the exception of Markov.

I see we don't agree on a whole lot today either! :)

Chris's picture
I think our disagreement on Brisebois goes back a long way. :)

nope, I think Brisebois was a pretty good defenseman in his day, it's just not his day anymore and think the Habs have better options.

I just pulled a double doug again, damn back to back days!

Fair and balanced assessment - as always.

good comments on KOVY and OBRYNE - both keepers. 1. The work of BGL will be key to our success this season... 2. The Bell Centre should be rebuilt to hold 80,000... 3. Kovalev is now in his prime...

i'm glad everyone in here is as disgusted at the Habs 33% effort last night. they will not beat good teams, teams that have actual talent with efforts like that

if you havn't seen the Bruins-Stars high(low)lights and want to get your blood boiling, check them out. Steve Ott and Sean Avery were at their best, cheap hits, lots of talking, no fighting. i hate the Bruins but that is how you answere the bell

Yeahhh. O'Byrne is pretty disappointing of late... Ex nihilo nihil fit

Hockey is a 60 minute game not 20 minutes. I wonder if we would have potted 4 goals with Rick DiPietro in the nets in the third period? At least we came back but I have yet to see that label we have as pre-favourites to win the Eastern Conference. Are the players laidback knowing that there are still 72 games in the schedule? Overconfident? Too many giveaways last night. Ryan O'Byrne looks very nervous out there. I'll be at the game in Toronto on November 8 and I expect a 100% effort from everyone. You have to give credit to Toronto. They are playing great hockey 60 minutes a game. Kudos to Ron Wilson for getting the most out of his players. Good to see Mikhail Grabovsky doing well in Toronto and we let this guy go? Tomas Plekanec.....cool as a cucumber I say. I love this guy. Všechno nejlepší k narozeninám Tomas! What a nice birthday present getting 4 points! Guy Carbonneau has to get the whipping lash out during practices. We still have to learn the ABC's on D or else we have to make a trade for a strong physical guy defenseman. We still are losing faceoffs, have we not learned anything during practices? My prediction about Sergei having the sophmore jinx is becoming evident as the season progresses. "We will win the Cup only with Carey Price in the nets"

Grabovski has 2 points in 11 games and is tied for a team worst of -5. This should be good enough for about 3.5 million tax free in the khl next season where he probably will end up playing. Going into last night we were third in the league in faceoffs, a gigantic upgrade over last season. I feel bad for obyrne, the guy is playing scared to make a mistake because as soon as he does make one he is stapled on the bench for the third period. We all know the potential is there, we saw it last season. Since we don't play till next friday we should send him down to hamilton to play a couple of games to get some confidence back if there is no risk to losing him on waivers. I pretty much agree with the rest of your statements.

THe problem is he isn't scared to make a mistake,he keeps making the same ones all the time. The kid is huge but plays Charmin soft and can't make a direct pass.I think maybe Hammer covered this guys weaknesses last year, and with Hammer joining the rush more this year, hasn't benefitted Ob at all.

Probably bang on about Grabovski, Showey. Didn't the second round pick that BG got for him go to Chicago to bring us Lang? Sorry, I lose track after awhile. Whatever, Grabovski had no future with us. I have to agree with your statements about O'Byrne too. Let's hope he can turn it around soon. We could use what he was bringing to the rink last year.

showey47's picture
Yeah it was the second round pick, which i felt was a little too steep for lang considering where the leafs could finish this year. Using the draft as an example we traded the #25 pick for tanguay and we traded what could be anywhere from a #31 to #35 pick for lang. As well as the leafs are playing now, i wouldn't bet on them keeping it up.

ryantheduke's picture
they can have Grabovsky.. he's not a team player.

RetroMikey's picture
According to Ron Wilson and teammates, Grabovski is a pleasant welcome addition to the team and shows no cancer on the team. Do you still feel a grudge after the incident in Los Angeles with Grabovski last season? The line of Sergei with his brother and Andre on the other wing and Garabovski at centre would have been an explosive line....that was the plan, unfortunatley time will tell if the Habs made a boo boo on this trade. "We will win the Cup only with Carey Price in the nets"

showey47's picture
What else does anyone expect ron wilson to say? The leafs also said blake wasn't a cancer(no pun intended), but every g.m. in the league except for jfj knew differently. There was simply no room for the guy, plain and simple. We needed a big, right handed and proven productive center. Three things grabovski isn't. Watching him play reminds me of samsonov, lots of speed on the perimeter but avoids the slot. He is a decent passer though, unlike samsonov.

Well written Robert! Let's hope for a better team effort against the "lowly" Blue Jackets and Maple Leafs.

Nothing wrong with Larock and low minutes, because it allows KOVY to be double shifted, great move by Carb...and when the Champ is called to the ring he answers, and that 1 minute is worth periods of settling nerves, but you have to understand and have played hockey to appreciate what Larock brings. Kostop/Begin should rotate onto the 4th and Dandy is filler when injuries occur, same with Breeze. 1. The work of BGL will be key to our success this season... 2. The Bell Centre should be rebuilt to hold 80,000... 3. Kovalev is now in his prime...
