About
I grew up in Park Extension, within walking distance of Dickie Moore's Dairy Queen on Jean Talon. Moore had a place on L'Acadie Blvd., and we used to see him driving around in his convertible with a Samoyed and a very dishy wife.
While "studying" at McGill University during the 1960s, I used to attend games at the old Montreal Forum. My fellow undergraduate reprobates and I would scramble up the stairs to get centre-ice spots in the top standing room section, where aged ushers didn't know or care what we were smoking.
I stood out in the cold for six hours to get tickets to the 1975 New Year's Eve game between the Canadiens and Central Red Army. With the exception of the birth of my daughter, the 3-3 tie was the greatest event I've ever seen in my life.
The Canada-U.S. Gold medal game comes close .... but I wasn't there.
I've been a professional journalist since 1974, when I joined the Montreal Star sports department. I've covered the 1976 Olympic Games, the 1979 Expos, pop music and MSO tours of Europe and Asia (classical musicians are WAY more fun to drink with than athletes). I wrote a TV & Radio column for 20 years and, since 2000, have written a City column for The Gazette.
The best part of being a Habs Inside/Out contributor is attending games at the Bell Centre. I think it's a great building: noisy, raucous and packed to the rafters with Montrealers and visitors who live for hockey.
And I still get goosebumps every time Michel Lacroix booms out "Accueillons nos Canadiens ..."
Having seen the Boston Red Sox win two World Series and the Pittsburgh Steelers add a couple Super Bowl titles, I suppose I can die happy ... but not before another Stanley Cup parade. And I'd really like my daughter to see a historic New Year's Eve game.
I like all the players. Covering baseball gives me a profound appreciation of pro athletes who aren't jerks.
My weltanschauung was summarized by the late great Bill Hicks when he said "all matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration, we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively, there is no such thing as death, life is only a dream and we are the imagination of ourselves."
Have a nice day.

i agree these are gritty guys we got here not a one of them is shy to go into high pressure areas of the ice welcome change to the perimiter type play that we witnessed last year also these guys are very durable and pardon my punctuation Habitant in Surrey used all my periods
Yes, hockey is a business. Free-agency always reminds me of how little loyalty there is in professional sports; yet, from time to time you see teams and players break the trend. When Yzerman was no longer the impact player he once was, Detroit didn't just cut him losse because they wanted a 'new face' or a 'fresh look.' They kept him, allowed him to retire with the C and kept him within the Detroit family. Bob Gainey seems to be very fond of using that term: he used it his own sweater retirement and in Roy's. He used it in a recent charity event, and most likely will continue to talk about it. However, he runs the team with a very cold hand and now has completely destroyed the core of the team, replacing it with a group of free-agents. The second longest serving Captain in Canadiens history, often playing with some of the worst teams seen in its 100 years, showed up to play day in and day out, gave back to the community in more ways then anyone else, was simply cut loose without even the slightest attempt to retain him. This is the perfect example of whats wrong with this team right now. Everyone speaks of the tradition, but that tradition is dead. This team isn't the one I grew up cheering for...as one of the oldest sports franchises, you would have hoped that we could have been one of the classier teams. Detroit does it, and that's why people want to play for them. They are one of the few real TEAMS left in the NHL. Yes, some players will come and go with free-agency, chasing those big dollars. But there should be exceptions, and one of those was Saku Koivu.
Today, it definitely got a little harder to root for the Habs.
Then go root for someone else. If we're going to go backward I'd rather bring back the Expos than Koivu and Kovy. They want to climb aboard at a bargain price, and BG can find a place for them? Fine. But let's move forward.
My point was that it seems they didn't even include Koivu in any conversations, which is something they could have done purely out of courtesy. Hell, the guy deserves a little respect for what he's done for the city and team, no?
If he wanted to stay in mtl, for the right price, there should have been some discussions...something! If he feels like it's time to move on, or if the team simply couldn't fit him in under the cap, then fine. The man bled for the team, and yet we show him no respect.
“I had good conversation with Saku on Wednesday morning and I thanked him for everything. He was tremendous for us for a very long time, a special player,” said Gainey. “I have great memories of his time here and Saku was a great player for us. The time came for us as an organization to move on, create a new team with a new identity.”
http://canadiens.nhl.com/team/app/?service=page&page=NewsPage&articleid=...
It appears neither Koivu or Kovalev are coming back!
“Both sides were interested in having Alex come back to Montreal, but we couldn’t come to terms in time,” said Gainey who had to move quickly as players were being snatched up in a hurry. “As it stands now, this would mark the end for Alex with the Canadiens.”
....ummm, well I stand corrected.
my bad, lol...still would have liked to see him retire a hab tho...
If both Koivu and Kovalev want to play for Montréal, wouldn't it make good sense to take a low 1 year contract? If it does not work out for them with the Habs, think about next year, every top 6 forward in the league is pretty much locked up for the next 5+ years, or they are playing for a team that would never let them go (i.e. Toews, etc). So there will be a big demand for vetern talent and probably good contracts to go along with that (providing they are healthy and are producing). If it does work out extremely well, they would probably be offered a term to retire in Montréal for a reasonable price.
Anyways just a pipe dream. I am still excited to the see the new team this season, either way, I think it will be a better season than last.
GO HABS GO!

What a load of crap.
Does it really matter who wears the "C"? Wouldn't leadership qualities come out in the room regardless of a certain player having a letter on the sweater? I thought the "C" was there more for in-game duties, like talking to refs. If that is the case, give it to the best communicator, someone the legue respects.
In terms of leadership in the room, I think the moves BG made helped out a lot in that regard, some really stand-up guys coming to town for next season. Guys who want to be here.
I thought the "C" was there more for in-game duties, like talking to refs. If that is the case, give it to the best communicator, someone the legue respects.
lmao. so now can we agree that Laps is a bad choice? :)
And George - me-smash-with-fists - Laraque
Husker Du! Nice!
Which is why Markov with the C is the dumbest idea I've heard. What's he gonna do in a spot with the refs, use semaphore?
semaphore! LMAO. Awesome.
I agree with Boone on the Markov idea. But, he won't don the "C". I think Gomez is a shoe-in for the job. Markov, Lapierre, or Gorges will wear an "A".
I don't-He can't speak english.
"Long before I ever wore the jersey, I wore the jersey.” Dryden
Forget Koivu and Kovy, and under no circumstances should we sign Bertuzzi. The last thing MTL needs is a player that courts controversy. Habs need to go back to a team that flies under the radar. There's already enough ego in their history, and in the stands.
BRING BACK KOIVU. F***.
Ex nihilo nihil fit
Has anybody else seen this...

The Hawks might not have too worry about their cap room this year, not next, if these guys are declared UFA's.
lang is the ***, amazing man, amazing player.
i was at the msg game when he potted 3, incredible
I watched them last year, the logical move is to offer Robert Lang another year when his achilles proves to be healed (likely in the next month or so) and that's the man who would be a slam dunk to be captain. We all saw how the team did when everyone else, except him, was injured or AWOL. They were nearly unbeatable in the bizarre stretch of injuries around December and January and the second Lang went out for the year, the house of cards all fell, no matter who came back or who went out afterwards. Lang was the glue that held them together last year and it'd be foolish not to bring him back for a full season after the way he played for this club (in all roles) last year.
Of course, that just guaranteed that he doesn't get a sniff.
I like Lang as well. I don't know why but someone always brings up his skating. Until they put in starting blocks, lanes, and change a couple funny rules I say talent, attitude, and a desire to win without panic are pretty important.
Sorry, but Lang was a great player and good guy. But, his age combined with the seriousness of his injury means he won't be able to compete at a high level any longer. The guy wasn't a fast skater to begin with either. I liked him as a player, but he's damaged, old merchandise! Retire now, Robert, while you still have a leg to stand on.
Gr - I'd rather have an old goat that knows the game and is sturdy on his feet than a scared soft Pleks who is always on his *** and happy to be, no more contact.
A debate:
Best move by Gainey in 2008-09
My choice: Spacek for a 3.8 mil cap hit over 3 years. He led the Sabres in ice-time, and his 45 points would rank 2nd in the Mtl defense (behind Markov), and 4th overall (Kovalev 65, Markov 64, Koivu 50.)
Other options are available. You can choose (a) taking over the team, after firing Carbs, b) drafting Leblanc, c) hiring Martin, d) the Gomez-Gionta pairing e) winning the Cams FA, f) maintainig allegiance to Carey Price and Halak, or g) none of the above, but please explain.
And please: let Brisebois alone. He deserves no part in (g).
Cheers!
Cleaning house. Last season spoke to the lack of leadership on the team. Many vet forwards have been replaced. The team has an experienced head coach. More experienced and effective D in Spacek and Gill (yeah, yeah, he's slow.) than in Komi and Schneider. No more excuses.
__________________________________________________________________________________
Beliveau is the best that ever was.
(c) Hiring Martin - and its not even close. The team needed a proper coach to instill a defensive system and a transition game. I know that many people thought Ottawa played a boring style, but I always felt their transition from defence to offence was beautiful...maybe its the soccer fan in me that appreciates small things like that.
After that, the I think the other positive moves were signing Cammalleri, although we were forced to over-pay, and keeping Price and Halak, as they are young, talented and cheap. Price is going to need some coddling by the franchise, however, to prevent him from trying to bolt as an RFA...I don't think the kid is a very happy camper in Montreal, right now, and this seems to have been completely glossed over since the end of the playoffs. Its been very weird.
I do not like the Gomez-Gionta pairing at the price Gainey paid (Higgins, McDonagh, Valentenko + approximately $5 million of cap space, if they don't re-sign Koivu). I'm also not crazy about Spacek's salary or term at his age but he will be a good addition, although we are over-loaded with left-handed defencemen right now.
Well so much for Toronto's next great blue hope now that Rick Nash has re-signed in Columbus for eight years. All the Leaf suck media on Sportsnet and TSN who had already begun trumpeting his arrival in blue and white next season, and along with Brian Burke who now has no one on his team (he also missed out on the Sedin's who he apparently was going to offer a boatload to) who can score and only one defenseman who can move the puck I don't think either look as great as some believe. Of course Leaf fans would disagree as they still seem to eat up everything Burke says.
As for the next captain there really isn't an obvious choice as I doubt Markov would take the "C" and unfortuanetly I think he'd be along the same lines of Patrick Marleau as a captain, someone who would rather just not have it on his chest. I'd say either Gomez or Hamrlik would get it if they gave it to someone right away but as weird as some may find it i'd go without a captain this season and see if someone distinguishes themselves as a leader on the ice and in the locker room.
http://5-10andagamemisconduct.blogspot.com/
lol @ Rick Nash and Brian Burke for being a sucker...
Hey guys I know the unorthodox yet genius route to take in choosing a canadian captain.... CAREY "you cannot bury" PRICE.... just keep an open mind at home opener when the fans with class bring down the house with noise when our man hits the ice.
I think Carey Price has enough pressure on him already. Besides, he's too young.
The cream always rises to the top. Someone will stand out & will be nominated early in the season, perhaps. Until then 3 "A"'s may be in order. I don't see this as a big deal anyway, because this team is gonna be so fast that all the numbers & letters are gonna be just bluuuuuuuuuurrrrrrrrrrrsssssss!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
... from Scott Burnside/ESPN : ..... GM Bryan Murray was unable to fully chase sniper Mike Cammalleri, who ended up in Montreal, and now the forward cupboard is bare save for the leftovers from Montreal (Saku Koivu, Robert Lang, Alex Tanguay and Alexei Kovalev). All in all, it's shaping up to be another long summer in Ottawa. ... Low blow for the Habs (leftovers).
...Nightmare ...there could be Worst 'Left-Overs' than Saku and Kovalev ...or Lang
...They would compliment a Spezza or Daniel Alfredsson (...possibly Heatley)
...Time for the Canadiens to move-on ...but They will help ANY team that picks Them up
(Note Bene Nightmare: My apology ...I posted first ...before realizing You are paraphrasing someone else ...a columnist)
...My excuse ??? ...I'm still exhibiting 'symptoms' of Post Traumatic Syndrome following the Gomez Trade
...am still a little punchy
Habitant means PASSIONATE HOCKEY http://www.nationalpost.com/news/story.html?id=423049
Surrey - I wasn't very clear , no worries.
Max Lapierre will be the new Captain, you heard it here first.
Yeah right! Make a second year player the Captain of the most storied franchise in professional sports. You do know a little of the history of this club don't you?
Either that or make a first year Hab the Captain of the most storied franchise in professional sports.
Or you can give it to Markov, a guy who can barely speak English.
Your choice!
Eklund . . . is that you?
Mommy said you'd be wearing a "69."
... They will have only assistants till Martin decides later on in the season on the captain. Gorges, Gill, Gomez and Gionta (The Four Gs'). P.J.Stock was saying today that Gill is very local in the dressing room, a real leader.
Somebody often forgotten but extremely popular around the league is Glen Metropolit. I think if there are A's to be handed out, he might be considered as a steward for a year. He will at least be a stabilizing influence in what promises to be a strange dressing room at the beginning of the year.
So out goes most of the KO's and in comes the G-Men?
Someone needs to get Gainey another couple of pages for his rolo-o-dex or something.
Is anyone else nervous that PJ Stock likes all the moves the Habs have made?
too funny!!! like watching someone slip on a banana peel: you laugh out loud at the physical comedy, but really deep down you know it smarts!
lmfao...
that confirms ALL of my fears!
For what it is worth
Koivu considering Anaheim....Wild not completely dead. (E4)"Also possible is a return to Montreal for a one year deal I am told."
- Eklund
i saw that to..don't give eklund much thought ..he is always wrong.
It's not worth much.
Eklund sells possible outcomes as certain eventualities. Saku could go to 30 teams. Immediately, you have a 1/30 chance. (Given his 3% success rate, this isn't saying much for Eklund.)
The wild? Maybe. His brother is there.
Anaheim? Maybe. Teemu and Saku have been the most consistent Fins of this generation.
Montreal? Saku hasn't signed elsewhere. Most UFAs sign with last year's team.
He's "told" nothing more than is told by a common knowledge of hockey players. He takes the "best guess," and his "best guess" is usually wrong. Nothing wrong with that: show me one Habs fan who picked Gomez, Gionta, and Cams as our first line on 25 June 09.
Now, if Eklund said Koivu would sign a 10 mil contract to Vancouver . . .
well i called gionta once we picked up gomez...does that count?
but i didn't see gomez coming...nor cam
- thanks for everything, saku koivu.
After Gomez, Gionta made sense. It wasn't for sure, it wasn't some kind of prophecy. If you called it, then good for you, because you have made some sense of free agency, or Gainey's interpretation of the potential of free agency.
But hockey's a fickle business. Many Habs fans picked re-signing Koivu, or Tanguay, or Kovalev. Most picked Beauchemin or Havlat to join the team. Some even bought Habs jerseys with SEDIN on the back, and tried to figure out whether H. or D. would fit their shoulders better.
No one picked Cams, Gionta, Spacek, and Gill as our free agent signings, even after we aquired Gomez.
Not even Eklund.
I saw that too... but I have a very hard time believing it... It would make me giddy with joy, but my heart can't handle two heartbreaks.
Don't really care, but to start the season I think it would make sense to not have a C.
If anyone, I actually kind of like the idea of giving it to Markov.
With your first point, I could not disagree more.
Now more than ever, the Habs need a leader. Someone to put a face on this rapidly changed organization. Someone to answer to the Journal after a loss (and there will be losses.) Someone to bring new additions into the fold. Someone to lead.
Markov? Maybe. His only detraction would be limited communication skills. A Francophone? Probably not, as Lapierre and Lats don't get the ice-time typically required for a Captain.
We'll see. I expect a team vote after training camp, unless Kovalev or Koivu are re-signed.
I don't expect Kovalev or Koivu to be re-signed.
The Habs need leadership. It's not quantifiable; it's not obvious.
Unless: it isn't there.
re-sign Dandenault to a 2 year/ 2.4 mil contract and make him captain
he is a vet and speaks french
Lats speaks french! arrogant, bloated ego french, but french nonetheless.
he hasnt been in the league 14 years and has 3 cups
Dandy's 3 cups = lucky to be part of such great teams. i like the guy, but not as captain.
Gill just won a cup, too. what does that say?
FYI the "C" is always designated by your peers in the dressing room by vote. The coach, gm, fans or media have nothing to do with it. By the end of training camp the votes will be cast from within by the players.
Except there are reports that indicate that the coach (Alain Vigneault) very much had an influence in giving Saku Koivu his narrow victory as captain over Shayne Corson. The coach and the management can certainly let it be known who their preference would be of the players vying for captain. Since the captain is the guy that nominally goes between management and the team, it would be logical for them to at least have some influence in the decision.
Surely given the roster as it stands they'll have to choose 4 A's and rotate the C between them, at least at the start of the season.
How about giving everybody a C-minus? :DDD
What about signing Shanahan to a one year deal and making him captain?
You're kidding, right? It's often difficult to tell with the varying "perspectives" on this site.
If we sign Shanny, and give him the C, we'd have to make the same decision next year, except among player's who were all rejected the year before.
Hopefully, the Habs will simply vote on the Captain after training camp. It's really the only way to make everyone happy. Check that . . . everyone happy, except the fans, who are rarely happy with anything.
Actually, I was kinda serious... I think there is going to be huge leadership issues with this team. Looking at the roster right now, I don't see one player as captain material. I think it's important to bring in a veteran presence who possess leadership capablities. Maybe not Shanny, but Gainey should definetly consider bringing back Schneider as captain for one year....that way we have a year to see who will emerge as the leaders of this "new" team.
After they (hopefully) sign their RFAs, the Habs have 4 mil plus for UFAs. You want that spent on Shanahan?
Gomez was an "A" for New York. I believe Shanahan was also an Assistant "C."
Why not bring back Koivu? Who not bring back Kovalev?
We do not need a year to figure out who has leadership. We need leaders, yesterday.
Shanny won't command anything near 4 million...made 800k last year. And I'm all for bringing back Koivu and Kovalev but it seems highly unlikely at this point. T he thing that worries me right now is the lack of leadership, character and size..I know its still early in the offseason but I would like to see these areas addressed before next season.
It's highly unlikely that "leadership, character. and size" will be addressed louder than it was in the recent UFA signings. Gainey brought characters, cup winners, leaders, and pint-sized scorers into the fold.
Honestly: who should Gainey have signed? Havlat or Gaborik? Serious injury issues. Hossa? Neither Detroit nor Pittsburg could win the cup; with him.
How about Spacek. Scoring wise, he would have been 2nd of the Canadiens defensemen, behind Markov. (He would have been 4th overall, behind Kovalev, Markov, and Koivu.) He led the Sabres in ice-time.
The Habs have leaders. Gionta, Gomez, Markov, and Hamr would make fine captains, although each has their particular faults. I'd be fine with any of the four. Maybe Koivu, maybe Kovalev: we'll see where they sign.
If the answer to this team's question is Brendan Shanahan, then we're not playing the same game of Jeopardy.
Hey, I got nothing against Gainey's signings...I love Cammalleri and actually wanted him on the Habs but it seemed like a pipe dream...The only move I wasn't struck on was the Gomez trade, but I kinda warmed up to the idea of Gomez centering Cammy and Gionta....
Signing Shanahan was just a low risk idea to solve our grit and leadership issues... Ideally, I wanted Ian Lapapierre to fill this position but we all know how that turned out.
And yes, Markov would be the logical choice as captain but he's a fairly quiet individual and definetly has communication issues. Hamrlik doesn't strike me as a captain at all, and Gionta and Gomez are new, but possible captains.
But the best case scenario is for Koivu or Kovalev to come back and don the C.
In general, agreed.
Shanny hopefully doesn't want to be the Habs captain for 2009-10, because he a) is not in the Habs system, b) has no future in the NHL beyond 2010, c) would only play 6-10 mins a game d) is slower and even smaller than he was at 30 years old, e) would ask too much to play for the Habs, to be revilled by the fans, and f) he's given no indication that he wants to play for the Canadiens.
You could also add: The Habs don't want Shanahan as their captain in 2009-10, because a) they have cap issues with their RFAs this summer, b) they have cap issues in 2010-11, c) they've already some reasonable captaincy material after the "Five year Plan," d) they've signed several UFA potential captains in the last week, and e) they're still hoping for a return of Koivu and / or Kovalev.
But, what do I know?
Shanny will be Captain in 2009-10.
I just wanted to see what it would look like if we went another box down...
why don't we just get Cap'n Kirk to suit up...LMFAO
Man what the hell do I do with my Tanguay figure? At least Koivu is a staple of years gone by, Tanguay was a one off :(
(I'm still proudly wearing my kovy shirt....the hell with it)
I have no less than three Komisarek jerseys. That's the last time I get so attached to a player.
Funny story: my brother and I went to a game once a few years ago and he was wearing a Ribeiro jersey (don't ask me why). At the game we saw during an intermission that he had just been traded. He immediately took off his Ribeiro jersey revealing a Ryder t-shirt underneath. Sadly they both now sit in his closet untouched and forever scorned. I hope I don't have to do the same to my Koivu shirt.
Your Tanguay collectible will be worth something in 50 years, during the bound-to-be-successful 150 Year Anniversary Celebration. All the Centennial merchandise will then fetch top dollar.
Lucky you, I have both... Kovalev and Komisarek tees.. Wondering should I buy Higgins too as long as they sell it on shop.nhl.com :D
lmao. you cursed us!
i have a Kovy jersey and i'll wear it proudly at the Bell Centre next time he comes (if he signs with another team, that is. i'm still keeping a tiny glimmer of hope he comes back).
At least my Price jerseys are still good. I think I may buy a Lapierre shirt, or maybe something with Subban on it.
I watched some Camilleri highlights and he looks to become one of my new favs. :D
My #10 circa 1976 will always remind me of what this team means to me........priceless
YOU bought that one? Damn you!!!
:)
I have a feeling Gionta will be captain.
yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if he became captain
I think Markov, whose been my favorite player for the last three years, deserves an A, but not the captaincy. Either you give it Lapierre and satisfy the French media for a francophone captain or you give it to a veteran (Roman Hamerlik). That's my take on the C, although Gorges as captain is intriguing.
i don't think Martin and Gainey would want to appease the french media with the C. it doesn't look like their type (and Gainey never took the C away from Koivu, anyway, through all the bs). they'll take care of it from within, and trust me, i don't think Laps is gonna end up wearing it come next September.
Laraque for C.
You can't captain from the pressbox. It's also good if your Captain plays more than 6 minutes a game.
