About this afternoon ...

posted by Mike Boone at 18h24 EST on Feb 6

The kids are alright.

"Who dat?" will be the rallying cry of Saints fans during the Super Bowl tomorrow night.

This afternoon, at the Bell Centre, Canadiens fans were wondering "Who dey?"

Three emergency call-ups from Hamilton – Ryan White, Brock Trotter and David Desharnais – formed the best fourth line the Canadiens have had this season.

I know: That isn't saying much.

But suffice it to say the youngsters did a lot more skating and hitting than we'd seen from Georges Laraque in two years.

In assessing the work of his former Bulldogs teammates, Mathieu Darche said hamilton coach Guy Boucher teaches and preaches the kind of take-no-prisoners hockey we saw from White, Desharnais and Trotter.

"(Boucher) wants his players to be relentless," Darche said.

Relentlessness  dominated the Penguins every time the kids were out there. The AHLers drew three Pittsburgh penalties and we were consistently first on the puck in the Penguins' zone.

Desharnais and Trotter played more than 11 minutes. White would have but for a late-game fight with Bill Guerin that cost him a couple shifts.

Making his NHL debut, Trotter led the Canadiens with five shots on goal. White had four hits, and Desharnais displayed the O-zone skill set that has carried the diminutive centre up the pro hockey ladder from the ECHL.

Coach Jacques Martin compared Desharnais's gifts – his vision and ability to read plays – to Martin St. Louis. High praise indeed, but for one day at least, the kid deserved it.

There were inspired efforts by the reconstituted Tomas Plekanec and Scott Gomez lines, who outplayed the Sidney Crosby and Geno Malkin trios.

Martin thought the addition of Darche and Travis Moen (who played his best game of the season) to the Pleks and Gomez lines, respectively, added some grit and defence without detrating from scoring punch.

Keyed by the kids, the Canadiens outhustled the Penguins – exemplified by Brian Gionta turning on the afterburners to beat Mark Eaton and score the goal that gave the undermanned (in theory, at least) home team a lead they would not relinquish.

The Canadiens outskated and dominated the Stanley Cup champs en route to a 32-21 shot advantage.

21 shots?

That's like a day off for Jaro Halak. He didn't need a shower.

But the team's number one goaltender was good when he had to be.

Playing without Mike Cammalleri, Andrei Kostitsyn and Benoit Pouliot – that's 51 goals out of a lineup that has trouble scoring – the Canadiens played what their coach considered the best 60 minutes of the season.

They did so because Martin was able to roll four lines, pressure the mistake-prone Pittsburgh D, spend long stretches in the Penguins' end and drive an Olympic goaltender to the bench.

The guy I consider the best player in the league was minus-2 on the game.

Gino Malkin was a non-factor and took a dumb penalty.

A good indicator of who had the puck for most of the game: Pittsburgh took six minors to three for the Canadiens. That's happened rarely this season.

Seeking an explanation for the champs' rather lacklustre effort, I asked Pittsburgh hockey writer Dave Molinari whether the Penguins, who got to Montreal yesterday afternoon, may have savored the delights of the city last night.

"They played," Molinari snorted, "like they were out this morning."

• • •

For anyone keeping track of Jacques Martin's Ontario franglicisms, today's press conference yieleded some classics.

The coach said the Canadiens were able to "out-shooter, out-chancer et out-worker" the Penguins.

He praised David Desharnais as a player who had "bat les odds" to make it to the NHL.

yeah the kids looked good. Sheer adrenaline can promote remarkable performances. Did you see them after the game? They were jumping around like 10 year olds with smiles to match!

It was fun to watch and a strong indication that Boucher has some talent to match with the work ethic he promotes. But that doesn't mean that these guys are ready to take over. Our lineup still needs some size!

Gomez, Gio, Ak

Pleks, Pouilot, Cammy

Metro, Sk, Moen

White, Lapierre, Darche

Until everyone is back we will need to patch the holes...with all the kids chaffing at the bit, it should be interesting!

DLHABSNUT65 I was just wondering when was the last time a 4th line in Montreal played over 11 minutes???

You know who played really well this game... Markov.

People have been knocking on him the past few games for being poor defensively, but tonight he was a rock.

excellent!! Philly loses, right on, I say

Habs need to keep the ruins losing streak going!!!!!!!!!!

2-1 wild leading the flyers with about 8 mins left. Wild have some goalie in net i've never heard of but he is playing very well. Hopefully the wild can win this in regulation.

You have to give Toronto their due, blanking Ottawa was just as impressive as our win today against Pittsburgh.

One of the VERY rare times i wanted Toronto to win. Bye, bye!

More impressive honestly, considering Ottawa's play of late. But with the emotion involved over the loss of Burke's son it was likely a foregone conclusion who was going to win that game. The Leafs had a fire lit under them like crazy.

had to listen on radio, what happened to Conboy, was he cheap shotted, Sounded like a hairy ending.

showey47's picture

Its happened pretty quick but it looked like he  was hacked on the back of the legs at the buzzer. Boucher was pissed and started giving it to the marlies players and their coaches. Was hoping for a old habs/nordiques style bench brawl.

ParrySoundHabber's picture

likewise...that was brutal...

Hey Boone,

You keep forgetting, it's Geno. Not Gino. Otherwise, it sounds like I missed a doozy. Hope they can replicate it next Saturday when I'm there :)

LMAO!! Toronto fans tried to do the "heh heh goodbye song" but only the Hab fans present knew the words...

Glenn Healy on Schenn's two goals: "Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me." The quote is innaplicable here no? Different goalie, different shot placement... I have no idea why that bothered me :)

andrewberkshire's picture

It bothered you because Healy is dumber than a bag of toenail clippings and you're right, it's a completely inapplicable statement.

I think that's the reason why I pity him. The only thing he'll be remembered for is terrible announcing. I'm not even sure if he was a hockey player before anymore.

you know i have never seen the bulldogs score...

everytime i have the game on they never score.

then i will turn it off and bam! a goal.

this sucks

How did the other panelists kept their faces straight? I would have fake-sneezed: AH, AH ... LUUUOONGO!

Mattee.'s picture

It's the weirdest thing. I wasn't too sure how I felt about the trade until I heard Milbury bash Atlanta's moves. It was only then I was certain they had won the trade.

SeriousFan09's picture

That was a laugher wasn't it? Milbury saying another GM made a bad move. He nearly destroyed the Islanders and they're still feeling the aftermath of his reign of terror.

Good game all, Under all of the wunderkind, I thought that Sergei K (aside from one lazy sweeping futile sweep that I yelled at) played very well. What else would you think between Anglo and Franco TV even the 3 stars on the ice didn't match. Every time I hear that the AK (or the K's packaged) form a trade foundation for something else, I get nervous. Bob, fait attention.

showey47's picture

amazing pass by PK to glumac who has an open 4 by 6, dogs tie it up.

And again for the lead.

showey47's picture

another great pass by PK

Shots 24-6 for Bulldogs at game half way mark while missing their top 5 forwards. They must have watched their team mates play this afternoon.

showey47's picture

now its 30-6,lol. Could use a couple of extra goals though.

ooder's picture

is their goalie pulling a halak? i would love to watch the game but i'm stuck doing a techinical description of a spray nozzle :(

Hockey is really such a simple game!

When you don't have the puck, go get it!

When you have the puck, go to the net with it!

The Boucher system....

I don't think we'll see too much more of that with Jiggy in the nets. I know it may sound treasonous on this site but kudos to Brian Burke for acquiring a franchise center, defenseman and goalie all in one season. I know he overpaid but he had to. In rapid succession the Leafs are suddenly becoming legitimized. With players like Khadri and D'amigo coming up the system it should make them very competitive in the future.

Vid's picture

who's the franchise center?

howtathor's picture

Kessel, I know he ain't no Sid or Ovie but he can sure find the net.

I'm just saying it's kind of gross to trivialize the enormous loss the family has suffered by suggesting that something as unimportant as winning a hockey game could possibly matter or even provide comfort.

Ayan_SB's picture

Woah, when did I say anything close to that? Relax dude. All I'm saying is, Brian Burke is their boss, I'm sure the guys respect him, especially Giguere and Beauchemin, and I'm sure they'd all love to win this one for Burkie. Not that it would make a difference to Brian Burke during this unfortunate time, it's simply a way for the players to show their appreciation to the person who brought them to the organization.

ParrySoundHabber's picture

They talk playoffs and cup after every win. 18 times I think I've heard that over my morning coffee.

ya for tonight....the leafs should win. Then its back to loosing after tonight!

ParrySoundHabber's picture

I told the whole HIO site yesterday to beware of the 3 recalls, especially the desharnais/torotter combo. All i heard back from the majority of HIO was "oh great more midgets, fire BG, fire JM." hahahahahahaha

told ya so. try following the team right from their roots....most of ya turn on the Wild game after the Habs game to watch GUI or  that California team to watch Koivu (who nobody wants) instead of picking up the AHL feed to see what we have in the farm. Those of you that watch the farm know who you are and so do I. I rarely post anymore. I'd rather just follow our team from the bottom up. GO Dogs/Habs Go.

Amen

next year my friend, next year. I've been waiting for Trotter since the second month of the season and I was upset when they called up Desharnais twice I beleive and left his playmaker behind. 5'6" or not. He's tough as nails, and he works hard every shift. Yvan did to.

ParrySoundHabber,

I know you are one of the most loyal Bulldogs fans I know on this site.

Just think when some of the kids get called up and have a successful career, you will be saying "yeah, I watched these guys 24/7 on the tube"

Ayan_SB's picture

I assume it may have been an exaggeration, but who seriously watches the Minnesota game for Latendresse other than couple of RDS faithfuls? If the Ducks are on tv, it's most likely for Getzlaf and Perry. If I watch any other team than the Habs, it's usually Washington and Chicago.

I like to watch the leafs.

I didn't mention any names. and not yours. those folks know who they are lol. on both sides of the fence.

ok - that was amazing! forecheck, backcheck, 4 lines skating hard in all 3 zones.

Here's the best news of all!

We still haven't seen the Bulldogs best player.....Subban!

Bring him up Bob - it's time!

Ayan_SB's picture

The LA Kings came back from a 3-0 deficit to beat the Red Wings. Everyone's talking about Washington and Ottawa, but the Kings have quietly gone on a 9 game winning streak.

This afternoon, at the Bell Centre, Canadiens fans were wondering "Who dey?"

They are the Hamilton Bulldogs, my hometwon, the place where ALL Montreal fans should go and see and analyze what players should or should not don a CH uniform.

Great  W, I'd like to see Trotter play more along with Glumac from Hamilton and David Desharnais in place of little Sergei.  He would do damage playing on our team on the scoreboard than Sergei.

"We will win the Cup one day only with ? in the nets "

Well little Sergei was plus 2 today and bigger then both Trotter and Desharnais. Not really sure of your dislike but think your judgement is clouded here dude.

Ayan_SB's picture

Sergei's got 3 points in the past 3 games, including a goal and an assist Tuesday. Did you see the Vancouver game? Desharnais doing well on the 4th line, no need to put pressure on him and place him alongside Plekanec.

Lol @ "little Sergei" when comparing him to Desharnais.
