About this afternoon ...

posted by Mike Boone at 18h56 EST on Feb 7

Starting the second half with an onside kick.

That's just the kind of coaching decision Jacques Martin would make.

OK, that was a joke.

The Super Bowl was fun ... and we needed that after the afternoon's downer.

Not much to say about the hockey game. The Bell Centre couldn't have been any more subdued if the Who were playing.

Had they lost, the Bruins would have matched an 85-year-old record for futility.

That wasn't going to happen ... not if Tuukka Rask could help it.

The Boston goaltender pulled a Halak. Rask made 36 saves, and the Canadiens were goose-egged for the fourth time at home this season.

The shot total was misleading. There were few second chances, no sustained pressure .... not even during the second period, when the Canadiens had a 15-3 shot advantage.

The Boston goaltender saw everything, and his D kept the slot clear ... not that anyone in a red jersey was inclined to venture there.

Tomas Plekanec had nine shots on goal, Scott Gomez seven. But while Sergei Kostitsyn and Brian Gionta showed some O-zone jump, there wasn't much help from Peter Principle wingers Mathieu Darche and Travis Moen.

The fourth line of Hamilton call-ups, who were spectacular against the Penguisn on Saturday afternoon, couldn't do much against the Bruins. Ryan White, David Desharnaid and Brock Trotter played against Steve Bégin, Milan Lucic and Shawn Thornton, a match-up that favoured the big, physical Bruins.

Lucic, plagued by injuries this season, had five hits and keyed a ferocious Boston forecheck that kept the D off balance. The Canadiens give away inches, pounds and truculence to physical teams: I'm not looking forward to the pre-break home-and-home against Philadelphia.

The Bruins took one minor penalty. That's not very much when you're giving up 36 shots, and it indicates the Canadiens' general ineptitude in the O-zone.

Jaro Halak ran into some bad luck.

Two of the Boston goals were deflections, off Ryan White and Josh Gorges.

The good news on Super Bowl Sunday: all the Canadiens emerged with their Achilles tendons intact.

And now two days to prepare for the best team in the NHL.

It took me 60 games to figure it out but now i understand JM system.  Play a great game once every 20 games play 1 period 20 out of 60 games and play 10 min 20 out of 60 games and don't show up at all for 17 out of 60.

I actually own a copy of that "Given to Fly" single!

(that is all, carry on)

Perfect analysis. This team is whacked. You cannot compare the teams that played two games versus Boston with the one that played versus Pittsburgh. How do you get blanked by Boston which had lost 10 in a row? Don't come to play. Play passive and chase the Bruins around the ice. STICK TO THE SYSTEM.

Mr. Boone what is this facination with the super bowl?  You know we have a little something called the Grey Cup in this country right?

It's a MAB MAB world.

Mike Boone's picture

Sorry, but I'm an NFL guy.

Can I keep my passport regardless?

idle's picture

You can keep the passport, but I have slightly less respect for you now.  Is alright if I call you Yankee Boone?

It's a MAB MAB world.

right on Boone...NFL is the only football league even if I am Canadian...I wouldn't go watch a CFL game if it was being played in my backyard

TommyB's picture

No kidding!  And with the number of rabid CFL fans, they probably could play it in someone's backyard.

RJ's picture

Based on that ridiculous showing yesterday, it's clear the veterans took the fourth line rookies out drinking on Saturday night.

They only needed one game to get ruined by Martin's "system". Send them back now before they forget everything Boucher taught them.

Mr.Hazard's picture

I feel the same way. Changed the style of play against Bruins = loss. Good idea JM.

Exactly my friend !! I couldn't agree more . I was surprised yesterday while listening to the intermision panel to hear one of the " experts " ??? say that JM likes his players to be playing this type of a game instead of the wide open type they played against the Pens .... I'm beginning to believe it !

Price vs. Washington....and if they win????

habsfan0's picture

It would be funny if the Habs, who just ended the Bruins' 10 game winless streak, end the Capitals' 14 game win streak on Wednesday as well...this schizophrenic performing team is apt to do just that.

The Cat's picture

Its ridiculous the amount of streaks this year.

Mr.Hazard's picture

I know! Caps, Sens, and the Oilers and Bruins were all at the same time!

Does Boone really get baked i wonder? I hope so.

Timo's picture

I am doing my best here... watching Steven Segal movies baked makes them actually... watchable, and super funny.

keepthefaith's picture

it makes everything watchable, except the third period of todays game. And One Tree Hill. Man i hate that show. Also hate that Sarah Mcglaughlin commercial with the sappy song and stray dogs.  No amount of kush could make that watchable.

On that note, I really hate Glenn Healy.

As previously stated the best remedy for a long loosing streak play the Habs after they have won!

Effort will be minimal and resistance passive.

If I knew what a "loosing" streak was I might agree with you.

A full reversal of everything that went right yesterday. These two games are a microcosm of this entire season, and highly indicative of why I can never get my hopes up for this team making the playoffs and going on any kind of a run.

Darche and Moen are not top 6 forward. They played a lot but the puck kept bounding off Darche's stick. Moen can only dump and chase. We miss Pouliot. AK and Cammalleri. We have no one to step up to fill the void.

where the heck is Andrei Kostitsyn??  what is up with this long awaited return from the knee injury?    sheesh.....

Harditya_CareyPrice's picture

Won't be available until the Olympics are over. Sucks.

... add to that about 25 games for the gelling and poof... see ya next year, Andrei.

Mr. Booone, the story of Price's year to date....

RetroMikey's picture

the story of Price's year to date...NOT!

Obviously there are more issues with Price this season than what you have said in your comments.

"We will win the Cup one day only with ? in the nets "

Dean Dalley's picture

Yeah Right Mikey. OK!

You mean to tell me that Price never had pucks deflected in the net by his D-Men?

You mean to tell me that Price wasn't hung out to dry by his D-Men on several occasions per game in most games?

You mean to tell me that Price didn't start the season with a team that was horrible in front of him?

If you can't see that then you are blind!

Sure, Price has given of a soft goal or two... Halak has as well.

Mikey, you should know every issue of every Bulldog from the past 10 years. Since you know everyone one personally that played in Hamilton...

Mr.Hazard's picture

He didn't say any of that. He said there's been more to Price's problems than bad luck. Sheesh!

"love cannot drown truth, Nefertiti"

RetroMikey's picture

Well, let's see,  it's actually 8 years not 10.

Not saying that I know every player but  being a Bulldogs season ticket holder has its advanatages by meeting most of the players over the years at fund raisers, charities, etc. you name it.

I'm not saying Price is a bad goalie, but Halak has had bad luck with our crappy D in front of the net.

Price is not in the groove this year and perhaps he will be but not with a hot goalie, in Halak.

All I am saying is stop promoting your boytoy Price all the time.  Give credit where it's due.

Halak is Number 1 presently and accept it.  Just maybe Price will wake up and practice harder and be that franchise goalie we all expect him to be.

"We will win the Cup one day only with ? in the nets "

fuhgawz's picture

now do we go with Price vs the red hot caps? ..... i think what the hell .... why not

edit

SeriousFan09's picture

Why does JM always seem to hold back from allowing the team what they need to do to win? Bulldogs line went from being able to pass perfectly to each other to looking very much like our ad hoc 4th lines we've been throwing out all season, rest of the team didn't have half the finish they showed off the day before.

Now we face the best team in the NHL, led by the best player in the world.

- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. http://habsandhockey.blogspot.com/

G-Man's picture

I guess that 4th line wasn't so hot today after all, eh? The Bruins were definitely due and the Habs did nothing to change the outcome. Inconsistency thy name is the Habs.

I think Price is to blame for the loss to the Bruins....he'll probably cost the Saints the Superbowl too.....

Enjoy the game Boone!!
