And the winner is ...

Don Waddell.

And in his acceptance speech, the Atlanta Thrashers general manager thanks his wife, his agent, God and Mats Sundin – not necessarily in that order.

Waddell is a winner this fine morning because of what Sundin did last night. The Toronto captain annnounced he will not waive his no-trade clause.

With Sundin off the market, Marian Hossa becomes A LOT more expensive. The price also goes up for Olli Jokinen, Brad Richards and – to a lesser degree – Alex Tanguay and Patrick Marleau.

Supply and demand, baby. Supply just took a big hit from Sundin, and Demand is chugging Maalox.

While Waddell and Tampa Bay general manager Jay Feaster will emerge as winners, the big loser is Leafs' interim gm Cliff Fletcher. As David Shoalts points out in the Globe and Mail, the inability to trade his prime asset ties Fletcher's hands in launching the rebuilding of the Leafs. Shoalts speculates that in order to get some youth and energy on its roster next season, Toronto may have to send Jason Blake, Darcy Tucker, Pavel Kubina, Mark Bell and Andrew Raycroft to the minors, where their total of $16 million in salary won't count against the cap.

Waddell was in Hamilton yesterday, watching the Bulldogs beat the Marlies (who were playing without Tucker et al). Mikhail Grabovski scored twice. Jaroslav Halak – who, unlike the goaltenders in Montreal, is on fire – played another strong game.

Atlanta scout Peter Mahovlich was at the Bell Centre on Saturday, watching the Canadiens dial up a stinker against Columbus.

You have to think a Hossa deal is in the works.

But thanks to Sundin, he won't come cheap.

We have a young, exciting team, but in all honesty we shouldn't expect a deep playoff run -- this is not a "make or break year for us". For example, Atlanta last year acquired Tkachuk and tried to make a big run for the Cup, and look at where they are now. I think we need to build on this year's momentum so we can be a big player year after year. With that said, I personally am of the view that youth is the answer -- bring up Halak, Grabovski, Chipper, and sit/waive/trade guys like Smoke, Kosto, Dandy. In terms of trades, I'd be comfortable making a trade that will help us in the long-term -- no rentals without a guarantee they will resign. That's why I'd feel better about acquiring Richards (who is signed for three years and makes a lot, but is likely comparable to what he would get as a UFA) than Hossa. I'm looking forward to the trade deadline, but hope that BG will make some smart moves for our future, not just the 07-08 season.

Looks like Foppa's signed with the Avs

Lets just hope the practice facility collapse isn't an omen of whats to come for the remained of the season....

tony d's picture

that's the first thing I thought of when I read that headline
yikes.... normally I'm not superstitious, but I'm gonna spit 3 times, swing a dead chicken over my head (Darcy Tucker will do ) throw some salt over my shoulder, burn some incense and maybe sacrifice a dead pig (Bryan McCabe will do) to the hockey Gods

The Teacher's picture

Where is the sacrifice when the pig is already dead? I don't get it. :P

tony d's picture

good point....I just don't feel as bad if the pig's already dead

Don't go overboard. Throwing salt over your shoulder is a little over the top.

As an aside, anyone see the gruesome injury suffered by the Gunners Eduardo De Silva? Nasty stuff

Hey Mike Boone,

What's with this "rebuilding" of the Laffs? Surely this is the longest rebuilding project in the history of the modern world and I would love to hear from others out there as to where this one rates. Is it comparable to the Pyramids (and no, not Roger Neilson's) or the Great Wall of China and when can we reasonably expect it to come to completion now that Sundin, McCabe, Tucker and Kaberle (the four pillars) have indicted that they want to stay and 'help" with the task?

Alright, depsite it all, I'm gonna say it...and trust me, I can't believe I'm saying this...

I hope Gainey doesn't do anything.

*stunned silence*

That's right, I hope Gainey doesn't trade for Hossa or Richards, Prospal or Marleau. The only exception would be for Olli Jokinen, but I honestly don't think Florida will trade their franchise player. He's the type of player you build a franchise around, especially at the prime of his career.

This team is a great, young team. They've got so much potential, but as rabid hockey fans (especially around the deadline and with the playoffs coming) we forget that. This team is a playoff team, and I think they could go deep as is. Such an experience would only benefit this club.

Gainey, don't make a trade. Let this team prove itself.
Don't make a trade Gainey,
That is, unless it's for my man Bobby Holik ;D

I agree with you. Not sure about Holik though.

You might just get your wish...

I don't do deals unless they favour us, which usually means no deal. Right now, not much looks to favour us. Although, at the same time, I'm happy to have all our assets selling high, except maybe Huet.

You guys have to remember what I said last summer, though. If I want the big free agents to come to the table, I have to show them we are true contenders, which means making a splash in the playoffs this year. But that also means I can't trade away the future to make the UFA's think twice about whether they are headed to Toronto.

Anyway, to sum up, I am going after Hossa, hoping he'll sign in the offseason exactly because he's psyched about next year's chances or I go after Jokinen, who's less of a scorer, but who has got the size we need and a few underpriced years left on his contract. Vermette is also a nice target. So's Holik. But those deals ain't happening until the offseason anyway.

At the same time, think about how shallow the UFA market is going to be this summer. Plenty of big names, but none that are keen on switching teams. So, a play for Hossa now may be the way to land the biggest fish during the golf season.

Saw on RDS that Jacques Demers reported Olli is not exactly a great team guy/player and cited a league source as saying that "Bob Gainey is too smart to trade for that guy"

Flames' GM Sutter won't deal Tanguay

http://tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=230548&hubname=nhl

Good. I didn't think he brought enough to earn 5.375 million next year. That's big cap money for a soft forward with 14 goals.

GO HABS.

Radio here in Calgary mentioned Huselius might get moved

likehoy's picture

it says that sutter is happy with his team chemistry.....why would they ship huselius?

So since Sundin and Tanguay are not available, does that mean that Ryder's value as a trade target has increased? You need a scoring forward, have we got a goal scorer for you!

Blitzen's picture

If this keeps up, Mackenzie won't be needing his Blackberry tomorrow, unless it's to find out what the missus wants him to bring home for supper.

10 hours of coverage for trades of depth third stringers? "So John, why don't you tell us all how you built the Laffs into the perennial contenders they are today?"

showey47's picture

Every g.m. in the league knows that calgary needs to dump salary in order to sign guys like huselius and langkow over the summer meanwhile kippers, iginla's, phaneuf's and regher's large contracts kick in next season also. He is obviously getting low-balled, if he gets something of equal value without the large contract, he may change his mind. If not watch him to be dealt at the draft.

Chorske's picture

Damn, I kind of liked that deal.

Chorske's picture

Huh, and now CBC reports that Richards has a hamstring injury. One less guy worth taking a risk for... not that we ever considered making a play for him, right?

I think the article is about Mike Richards from Philadelphia. He is not in play, shame.

That is Mike Richards from Philly that got injured.

showey47's picture

But it is coming from CBC so of course they screw stuff like that up.

Chorske's picture

Whoops, lol, read it too fast. What was that they said about men and multitasking? ;)

Damn, it turns out that Gainey has been working on a deal for Marcel Hossa!

teamplayer's picture

really says who?
does he want to unite more brothers

Sorry, just a lousy attempt at humour. Feels like gallows humour. Suggesting it was another name mix up.

How funny will it be watching tommorrow trade centre on tsn and all the other channels when they have no trades to report haha wow it'll be hilarious.
