Habs tanked any playoff run hopes by giving away Huet (Does Montreal owe something to Washington?). Price isn't ready and this may very well play havoc with the young goaltenders development. Plus the timing is bad from a team perspective; with Kovalev playing well!!!! and all other aspects in order more or less (except possibly Ryders season output), it was the year to take a shot. Price is the goalie of the future maybe, but in 2 years when he is ready the Canadiens are unlikely to have this team core. We're likely to be rebuilding our core by then! I really hope Price makes me eat this comment (I would gladly do so), but I think there is less chance of that than the Habs making it beyond the second round now, if they get that far.
I don't understand the one sidedness of this trade. A second round pick? Give me a break! It's as if they were anticipating bigger things to materialize. Of course the Hossa trade. Either that or they had to get Carey out from the shadow of his "mentor". A tree needs space to grow. We all know how Carey has done in pressure situations. Let's sit back and enjoy the ride!
I love it - makes this team more fun to watch - we finally get to bring up Halak without hurting anybodys feelings... when Price fails (if Price fails) we will have no problems in goal. I can't wait till playoffs
Well, Gainey pretty much made it clear that he didn't think Huet had the tools in the end. He would not resign him in the summer and thus it made sense on several fronts to go with a Price/Halak tandem.
1. We have marked Price as our guy, with Halak a noticeable second. If they are our guys, they might as well be the ones getting the experience. I would rather have Price get 1 or 2 series in the playoffs down the give it to Huet who will leave. Thus rendering Price in the same position as he is this year.
2. Huet was leaving no matter which way you put in. Considering Burkie had to put Bryzygalov on waivers, a 2nd isn't too bad. We all would like a 1st, but, the market isn't good for goalies right now.
3. Now there is no uncertainty among the players, they know who their guy is. They will have to hold themselves responsible if they let young kids out to dry.
Ryder did not go because we NEED him now. He was only going if we picked up a 1st or 2nd line forward.
As for Hossa. I'm glad we didn't get him. Gave up a lot and I find it hard to believe Pittsburgh will resign him.
Anyways, let's see the reaction among the players today. I think Higgins will bring it as will Ryder for some reason.
As I've said before, Huet has been over-rated. Remember the last regular season game against the Laffs last year. He blew our chance for post-season play. Good move to get a second-rounder (deep draft this year) as he wasn't worth that much.

I thought the pick was for 2009. Not sure though.
I'll pass judgment when Gainey is done, but this move does confound me.
The only way it makes sense is if it was a salary dump.
At least this means we get to hold on to Halak. I have been fearing for some time that both Halak and Danis would bolt in the offseason. Given that we were not certain (likely, but not certain) to retain Huet, this may not be bad (though I think we could have gotten more for him).
I still think Danis is gone, but I now believe we can sign and retain Halak, since he is virtually guaranteed of an NHL position, even if only as the backup.
There better be more coming down the pipe, this trade as it stands makes no sense to me.
