Cover boy starts in Phoenix

posted by Mike Boone at 15h54 EST on Mar 5

Canadiens' recently-anointed Number One goaltender is on the cover of The Hockey News Future Watch '08 issue.

The headline is: Peerless Price: The Games Hottest Prospect.

The Hockey News asked 21 NHL scouts to rate the league's Top Five prospects. Price got 16 first-place votes. He was a runaway winner over Kyle Turris, who had four first-place votes.

Turris was the 2007 first-round draft choice of the Coyotes, the team Price will face tomorrow night. Guy Carbonneau announced today that Price will start in Phoenix.

Hockey News senior writer Ken Campbell wrote the cover story without interviewing his subject. Price did not return any of Campbell's phone calls or messages.

So Campbell talked to Don Lever. And the Hamilton coach, recalling Price's call-up from junior for the Calder Cup playoffs, said "The first game he played for us he looked like he had played in the league for 15 years."

The Hockey News asked its scouts' panel to assign grades to each organization's prospects. Canadiens got an A- and ranked seventh, behind top-rated Pittsburgh, Chicago, Phoenix, St. Louis, L.A. and Columbus.

The poor Leafs are 28th with a C-, ahead of only New Jersey and Tampa Bay.

The Hockey News offers assessments of each team's Top 10 prospects.

Canadiens' list, from top to bottom: Carey Price, Ryan McDonagh, Max Pacioretty, P.K. Subban, David Fischer, Alexei Yemelin, Yannick Weber, Ben Maxwell, Ryan White and Mikhail Grabovski.

I hate to second-guess my friend and Gazette colleague Herb Zurkowsky, who wrote the assessments, but I'd rate Grabovski a lot higher than 10th. And unless signability is an issue, I'd have Yemelin up with McDonagh. I'd also rate Kyle Chipchura and Matt D'Agostini higher than Maxwell and White. And I think Pavel Valentenko will be better than Fischer.

But hey, it's The Hockey News. They picked Canadiens to finish 13th in the Eastern Conference this season.

On the club's dime, a 30-member contingent of Canadiens' loved ones flew from Montreal to Phoenix on Monday and spent yesterday with team members on an off day.

Christopher Higgins, Mike Komisarek, Maxim Lapierre, Bryan Smolinski and Ryan O'Byrne invited their fathers to make the trip. Goaltending coach Roland Melanson chose his goaltender son, Benoit, who got to face a few shots in practice this morning.

It's a first in the long history of the Canadiens. And if the lads lose in Phoenix, it might be a last.

Call me old-fashioned, but I don't think the first week of March is the best time for r'n'r on the road. Players should be focused on hockey and nothing but.

Canadiens had wanted significant others to join the team for their post-Christmas trip to Florida. But league rules on incentives put the kibosh on that. Teams can offer each player one round-trip air fare and hotel accommodation for one game per season.

At least the spouses et al are missing dreadful weather in Montreal. The city is closing in on a record set in 1971, when we were up to our asses in spring snow watching a rookie goaltender lead Canadiens to an unlikely Stanley Cup.

Mike,

In my opinion i think the taking a rest is a good thing. I make the parallel to what they show about studying for exams. The concept that cramming is not good and that getting a good rest to let the information sink in is the better more effective route.

I think allowing the players to chill and rest allows for all the information from tactics to muscle memory etc...time to settle in. Also it allows the body the appropriate rest and finally if they are in a good mood and energized i think that can't help but be beneficial. Given that Carbo has been doing this all year and the Habs are generally a healthy bunch i'd not fret too much about it.

I think it's the right way to go and so far it seems to be working in my opinion. lol.

Go Habs go!

Part of that 7th place ranking, they include players who play in the nhl that are 21 or younger, its not just prospects! So it considers fulltime nhl players a la crosby, malkin, toews and kane.
as for price getting that 16 first place votes, he also recieved 2 2nd place and 2 5th place. so someone actually did not put him in the top 5.
the last 3 # 1 ranked prospect by the hockey news future watch scouts that were goalies:
kari lehtonen in 2003 and 2004 - #30 in top goalies this year, #11 last year by THN.
Roberto Luongo in 1999 and 2000 - #1 goalie this year, #2 last year
Marc denis in 1997 – couple bad season after he signed a contract, now in ahl.

and the article wasnt the greatest all about him in the ahl, campbell seems upset about the whole not returning phone call thing, it almost seems like he is bashing him

I agree that this isn't the time for the players to be relaxing in the sun with their families while they're on a road trip. They have a game to play and I hope the family visit thing won't prove a distraction. We should be able to win against a team that was on the road last night, but if the players are too relaxed and Phoenix comes out hard, the game could be over before we're even into it.

Mike, We're only about knee high so... let it snow?

Here's a question for Montrealers... Is a Stanley Cup really worth it if you have to deal with snow like this until mid April?

MikeL's picture

I'd take no summer and snow in august for the cup.

when are we going to have the parade then?

The Teacher's picture

Who said we can't have a parade in the snow?

"Are the Habs ready to pay the Price?"

Gr8stFranchizEvr's picture

Besides... the playoffs only begin in April. By the time the cup is hoisted, it'll be late May or early June! So, let it snow...

i think this is when a child usually hears..." go to your room and think about what you said."

DUDE REALLY?

The Teacher's picture

No question about it. YES.

Your comment about the snow in '71 is also applicable to '77, another record snow year and cup for our boys. HIO regulars have pointes to a bunch of "spiritual" fingers pointing favourably at a cup run this year - dare to dream! If this year ended in a 6 we would really be in business.

Like Price getting the call - he deserves to redeem himself. Win or lose, I want to see Halak in the next game. He is no slouch and the competition will be good for Price.

Price and Halak are fishing? In Phoenix?

The hockey news had them 14th, yup just one spot from last overall in the conference and I'm guessing going for the lottery pick...

Also hockey futures has Montreal ranked 4th overall, (2nd last year)

FYI - The Coyotes are playing in Dallas tonight, only to fly back to Phoenix for a game against us tomorrow. Bryzgalov is in nets tonight, so maybe we will face Mikael Tellqvist tomorrow?

Thanks to Timmins our reserve of prospects seems to be in good shape if the report is accurate,... althougt when HocheyNews is failing to more properly sorting-out our 10 best prospects (of which Sergei Kostsitsyn wasn't even included) it make me hesitate to take their NHL hierarchy of prospects too seriously.

Regardless of our prospect situation, Gainey will need to be active and very successfull this summer if he wants to ice a legitimate Cup contendind roster from the start of our upcoming centenary season,.. instant quality players will be required to come in in order to bolster our team to a point were no apparent weaknesses should be present from the get go.

Those weaknesses will become more obvious in the proceding of our present season and its ultimate conclusion.

I foresee that much of our improvement next season will come from our own maturing players the like of Price, A.Kost and his brother just to name a few.... but that Gainey will be required to bring in a no compromised gem or two issued from solid trading and UFA signing in order to bring this team over the top next year.

what I want to know is...Why didn't Carey Price return any of Ken Campbell's phone calls...? Hmm

nick's picture

Imagine if he did an interview with everyone yahoo who called and asked for one?

Every yahoo? This is The Hockey News, doing a COVER FEATURE on the guy.
Granted, their magazine sucks a little. But they've been around longer than the kid. Surprising.

The kid is pretty quiet.

Not a valid excuse, in this case.

Why wasting valuable time talking with hochey pundits writing for HocheyNews,... Price is out fishing with teamate Halack today in the Pheonix area.... now thats my
type of men.

Yeah they didn't call him up the day the magazine came out on the shelves... The story was probably written a month or so ago.

Maybe its just me, but after being anointed the #1 goalie, how the hells is Carey a prospect, and why is it people dont seem to think Halak seems to be that good a prospect, hes young, he showed he has very good to great potential, and seemed solid last year, I would have put him in our top ten.
My List would go thusly;
Mcdonagh, Yemelin, Chip, Pacioretty, Grabs, Halak, Valentenko, Fischer, D'Agostini, White ( Maxwell maybe has more talent, but he's always hurt, just does not seem to be tough at all.)

if their wives are anything like mine, all they'll get is R'n' R, and maybe a to-do list...

Ha! You better hope your wife doesn't read HIO or you'll find your net being crashed!
