The tie

It's an Hermès.

Guy Carbonneau's wife bought it for him in Dallas.

Its won-lost record is 2-0.

Carbo says he'll wear it a couple more times then sell it on eBay or put it up for auction at a charity golf tournament.

Then he plans to buy one or two more.

In the hockey portion of his press conference, Carbonneau said he could gauge Roman Hamrlik's effectiveness by the degree to which you don't notice him:

No mistakes; simple, effective passes, rather than trying to squeeze the puck through three opponents.

Worries : Most fans on this site are worried about Breezer starting on "D" , which is valid , but my worry is when Saku comes back. Taking the odd hint from Carbo's press conferences it seems stubbornly he is leaning towards having Higgy on LW with Saku which means Ryder is on the 3rd line or the hot dog stand where either have little value to the team and talent is wasted. Higgy's game this year is perfect for the 3rd line with Max & Lats where he can do his thing and has to crash the net with grit where he scores most of his goals whereas with Saku & Sergie he tends to be too fancy which isn't his game and his defensive game is a plus for the third line also. Sergie's defensive game and playmaking is an ideal match for Saku and Ryder. This all depends on Ryder's leg injury of course.

Hey Dreamer 49, good morning, I am with you on Leaving Higgy on the 3rd. There is no chemistry for him with Koivu or Ryder.

I never thought that by me bringing up on here weeks ago now that Guy should borrow one of Don Cherry's ties instead of wearing that fishing lure around his neck, that he would be asked about it at the news conference. Sounds like we have nothing pertaining to hockey to be concerned about. We are fairly loose and confident. Enjoy the game tonight everyone, and watch for his now famous tie.

The problem with Ottawa right now is they need Spezza and Heatley to step up in a big way (yeah, I heard that Spezza was hurtin'). The grinders did last night but that alone is not enough. They're down 2-0 and, really, Crosby hasn't put his stamp on this series. It's the old saying that their best players have to be their best players. Untill that happens the sens( they're probably done anyway) don't stand a chance.

GO HABS.

Ian Cobb's picture

1010-- Spezza hurting, that's a joke. Spezza has never even had a nose bleed in his whole hockey life. Honestly have you ever seen him with a scratch?? Biggest chicken and never been plucked. If you were to go to hit him, he would hand you the puck to avoid the hit.

I guess I should have conveyed my sarcasm better when I made that statement Ian. I didn't buy it last night when Galley(surprise, surprise) kept bringing it up. The giveaways he made near his own blueline were obviousy that of someone who won't take the hit to make a play.
That's what made his fight with Markov so laughable. I keep asking the sens fans at work how long is it gonna' take their big scrapper Spezza to step up and lay a beating on Roberts.

GO HABS.

This may be greedy, and is every way a testament to how much i love this site...

But...

I don't care if it's saturday. It's 8 am and less than 12 hours to gametime... I want new stuff to read!

Yes I agree, its game day. Wakey wakey.

Perus the other threads and offer your insights on the other series for now :)

Dave and Mike need their sleep also. (although there is a 1% chance Dave is stil sleeping)

Chipchura returned from injury for the Dogs tonight.

nice game in Pittsburgh tonight. Ottawa has finally come alive. Here's hoping that Ottawa gives the Penquins a run for their money and that series goes to 6 or 7 games.

gfunkdoc's picture

Ottawa's gonna have to figure out a way to string together a lot more than 20 solid minutes to even make this serious remotely competitive. Until the third period tonight they'd looked lost in that series. I know they've had some crushing injuries, but how does a team that made it to the finals last season totally forget how to compete?

I hope if the Pens threw their last game as they are accused of doing, the Sens (whom I hate) trounce them. Have some integrity in your game lads.

does anyone know where to find the stat for team hits? .... i wonder where the Habs line up against the rest of the teams in the playoffs

doug's picture

mike - read your city column today. do you REALLY have a habs log on your bicep? i think it's as likely as that bentley you said you're driving but i had to ask nevertheless!

Don Cherry who i like sayes he's a great Canadian yet he's promoting and pulling for the Bruins over the Canadian team the Habs.

Habsgirl's picture

Cherry hates the Habs because their roots are in French Canada in my opinion and Don Cherry is a bigot. He had on his black and gold tonight on Coaches' Corner and announced it wasn't for Pittsburg who was playing tonight but was for Boston, who would be playing the Habs tomorrow night. Cherry hates Montreal and makes no secret of it. I am tired of Cherry's bias towards Montreal and for that matter the rednecked comments he makes towards European players in the NHL. I am also tired of the bias of the CBC during the year in their coverage of the Canadiens' games. In Ontario I get to see Montreal on the CBC if they play the Leafs. I buy the NHL package so I can see my Habs. I feel that too is racially motivated broadcasting.

I wrote the CBC and Don Cherry last week to tell them what I thought on all counts after the April 5th Habs/Leafs match-up. I was frankly disgusted that Cherry even then couldn't praise the winning Canadian team. The Habs finished first in the league. They were the top scoring team. They finished first in the powerplay. Instead, Cherry praised what McCabe did to Stewart. He praised his goon tactics in the final minutes of play. He, nor the Leafs, possess no class. Cherry also tried to diminish the night of Kovalev that night.

Cherry can cry over Boston the same way he cried over Toronto when we finish with them in 4.

I used to enjoy watching don cherry years ago but now with his laffs loving anti-habs comments i don't even bother watching him anymore. I got rds 5 years ago (and i don't even speak french) just to get the habs games and not to have to listen to cherry, cole or any other cbc or tsn homer(healy) anymore.

Cherry is a dinosaur! He should take his xenophobic comments and go write his memoirs instead of boring us with his Torontocentric vitriol. I admit I used to like him but that was many years ago. Like the dinosaurs his time has come and gone (except for our Komisaurus!) and the CBC should be more judicious in their choice of hosts.
Bob Cole is not far behind. I heard an interview with the new boss of HNIC the other day (Scott something?) and he sounded intelligent and progressive in contrast to the ravings we hear on Pooche's Corner. Maybe like the dinos everything takes time and change will come. Grapes has had his 15 years of fame. The future is now!

Big Bird's picture

Great post. Couldn't agree with you more. I especially found his asinine comments about "Al Gore and David Suzuki (that left-winger)" during the Habs/Leafs game very telling.

Mr. Suzuki has done more for Canada - and the globe for that matter - with respect to the environment than that Cherry ever will. Thank God he doesn't seem to be on when the Canadiens play during the playoffs.

P St. Pierre's picture

Great comments, although Cherry actually said that he liked Stewart and his fight. He also pointed out that he liked the way Kirk Muller praised Stewart for taking on McCabe as well.

The only things good thing that Cherry ever says is that he likes Vincent Lecavalier and his support of our troops. Other than that, he's very annoying. I've come to the point where I just laugh at most of his comments.

24 Cups's picture

I agree with many of the comments that have been outlined above. Two things really bother me about Cherry and his "act". His "show" is supposedly an in between periods analysis of what is going on in the specific game that night as well as the NHL in general. But think about it. How much does he really comment on the game? He always has his pre-arranged agenda and film clips that either border on being cliches or topics that have little to do with hockey. Truth be known, Cherry has lost touch with the game and the new NHL even though he comes across as an authority on the subject.

Secondly, Cherry sees himself as a teacher and role model to the kids of Canada. "Now look here kids, listen to what I'm saying". In all honesty, is this the type of role model you want your kids to look up to? It's not what he says about hockey that bothers me so much, it's his demeanour and outlook, the values that he thinks are important to imprint on our kids. I could go on and on but why bother. HNIC is a ratings juggernault for the CBC with Don Cherry being in charge of attracting the blind devotees who willing offer themselves up as the sacrificial lambs.

the rub is though nightmare, he will justify it by saying there are more good Canadian boys on the Bruins.

Whatever the outcome is down the road, this has been a marvelous season.
We've now got the link to our glorious past again with Carbo, Muller and Jarvis behind the bench.
The kids are getting a taste of what it means to be in Montreal on a successful team in the playoffs and how great a city it is to play in.
I've been incredibly impressed by how they are now all buying into the system and the message. Outside of that stumble after clinching the playoff spot, they've been rock solid and haven't deviated from the game plan and have been imposing their will on the opposition.
What is the motto on the door leading out of the dressing room?
Playing Together...Growing Together...Winning Together?

We're going to win the Cup together. That's the outcome of 2008.

Pretty cool if you think about it; Les Glorieux's support staff has more cups amongst them as the corrent roster does!
