Stars-Wings I

What I'll do through the Canadiens-less – boo-hoo-hoo! – remaining playoff rounds is create a venting post for each game.

I think both series have the potential to produce some great hockey.

A Pittsburgh-Detroit final would be a terrific clash of skills, and that's the matchup I'm predicting.

On the other hand, marty Turco is the best goalie still standing and Brenden Morrow is Studus Maximus.

As for the Flyers .... well, the last two teams that eliminated the Habs went on to win the Cup. But I can't see Martin Biron baffling Crosby, Malkin, Hossa, Staal et al.

Mooted on CKAC, just because they have to fill airtime:

Carey Price for Roberto Luongo.

Brunnstrom?

Who gives a rip? Canadins should be targetting that other Swede.

• • •

Yay! The game is on TSN.

I thought CBC would have both Conference final rounds.

Rats!

I forgot about Milbury and "Heals".

Bad news and very hard to believe but the CBC's Bob Cole continues full steam ahead http://www.globesports.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20080508.truth09/GSStory/...

i love rick nash...i wish for some reason we could get nash...i would totally give up captain-in-training chris higgins for rick nash. Smooth skater, great hands, great scorer (on a defensive minded team) and a big body.

I'd love to see Nash here. But it'll take more than Higgins to nab him - Price and Latendresse maybe.

1. www.flickeringpictures.com - not a hockey site, but still kinda neat
2. Josh Gorges on Montreal's attack: "They're comin', they're comin' and they keep comin'. Just line after line, wave after wave..."

Columbus has Pascal Leclaire, so I doubt they are looking for a starting goalie. This one is a non-starter.

While we're at it, let's trade Francis Bouillon for Nicklas Lidstrom, Tomas Plekanec for Evgeni Malkin, Patrice Brisebois for Scott Niedermayer and Sergei Kostitsyn for Vicent Lecavalier.

Okay... Breezer for Niedermayer works for me as long as we can get Niedermayer to commit to a full season next year.

GO HABS.

i meant as a package deal since nash might want to win something other than the worlds every year and hitchcock gets a 2 way player he could work into his defensive system but hey...thanks for being an ass

I think everybody has a large list of players they would gladly have on their team, but the cost is typically so prohibitive that it isn't really worth the time thinking about it. Given that Atlanta was rumored to be asking for something like Higgins, O'Byrne and a prospect for 2 months of Marian Hossa,, the market for an elite, still-developing player like Rick Nash would be insane. For Nash, a very young guy whose ceiling is the sky, you are probably looking at a package of something like Higgins, Komisarek or O'Byrne and a group of multiple prospects or high draft picks. Still willing to do it? Does THAT cost justify the gain?

Guys like Nash, Lecavalier, Malkin, Ovechkin, etc. don't come along very often, and when they do EVERYBODY wants them. They put fans in seats and bring attention to a franchise. Montreal sells out every game and has a rabid fan base, so we don't need to sacrifice our team to get one of these guys. If we could steal one, that would be a different thing, but good luck with that.

Edit: As a followup, I just looked at the top 25 goal-scorers in the NHL this season. Here's a breakdown:

Played with one team in career: Ovechkin, Kovalchuk, Iginla, Malkin, Zetterberg, Gaborik, Lecavalier, Alfredsson, Staal, Nash, Vanek, Spezza, Brown, Roy, Kopitar, Morrow, Parise and Datsyuk.

Played with multiple teams: Boyes, Heatley, Sharp, Kovalev, Jokinen and Prospal and Sundin.

Of those who have been traded, few saw Boyes or Sharp as elite scorers coming into this season. Heatley forced his own trade to get some closure from the Dan Snyder tragedy. Kovalev, Prospal and Jokinen have been discarded at least once for financial reasons.

Sundin is unique in that he is probably the one player on this list dealt by a top-flight team for a package of players, but it was a move that ultimately led to a Stanley Cup victory by the Avalanche, where players directly or indirectly involved in the trade (Sylvain Lefebvre and Claude Lemieux) played a pivotal role.

The point here is that if you want the elite goal scorers, chances are you are going to have to draft them, especially in the salary-cap NHL where players are less commonly traded for financial reasons. TEAMS win Stanley Cups, and giving up a large number of assets for an elite sniper is not usually a successful formula.

Why not? Those all sound feasible... :)

Jason Giambi and Johnny Damon are at the game tonight and I dont know who's lady friend that is but she's a piece of work - Yikes! I thought pro athletes can do better than that...

Hope the Flyers/Pens is more engaging tomorrow night.

Mike, this game is the definition of anti-climax.

I haven't been in this much dis-suspense since Russia's general election.

Lidstrom: It’s because of the new jerseys. The Red Wings logo now comes up to where to the “C” used to be which is why it doesn’t fit over there, so they moved it to the other side.

P.S. Lidstrom is a Liverpool fan. Come on George! Get cracking!

And actually, the Red Wings used to put the C on the opposite side way back when, so when they moved it there after the new uniforms got introduced, they didn't feel they were messing with tradition.

Morrow..

Can anyone see Gui! as a mule? He's certainly got the size. He's got to be willing to face the music down low. Sure works for Franzen! I don't think Franzen is particularily gifted but he is a mule. Yeeehawwww!!!

the_larry's picture

I can see Gui! more as a Eeyore than a mule.

You know that if we could resign Janne Niinimaa, Latendresse would look faster than Big Brown at the Kentucky Derby.

the_larry's picture

hahah so who would play the part of Eight Belles.... Breezer?

You've got me there. Can't be the Breezer because to be fair, he showed up and played fairly well. Can't be Ryder because Carbo euthanized him on the roster that is long before the playoffs began.

Damn this team has it all; Solid goaltending, Excellent defense led by a big man that can do it all, and forwards that cover the spectrum of a championship teams needs. Kind of reminiscent of the late 70s Habs.

They even got the refs.

Even if we got out of the East, our squad isn't ready for these guys. And, the disappointment would ultimately have been that much greater.

Not yet Yeats, not yet. It's always disappointing to lose in the finals, but there is no shame in losing to a team like Detroit, and it can serve as an accurate measuring stick as to where you have to improve.

Unless your team is based in Ottawa ;)

True, very true. I was hoping this year might be an '86 or a '93, but I am at peace with the team. To be fair, even during the Glory Years in the '70s, I always felt a bit empty after we won the Cup, knowing that in five months we would just have to start from scratch all over again.

Yeah Brian, we were all hoping for one of those miracle years this go round. We made huge strides this season, and you never know when an improving teams fortunes will start to snowball.

BTW Happy to see you back to your old moniker.

I have to admit, the old moniker feels much more comfortable. I'm a computer spastic and it just took me some time to sit down and figure out what I did to turn myslef into Delete. The upside was, however, that Ian couldn't turn Delete into Teats unless he meant to!

For all our criticisms, this years' team made us older fans remember what this team used to be when we were young and what a treat it was when the Habs got on a roll. I have more respect for the younger fans who have never experienced what we did growing up. They have to live on faith where we lived on fact!

No kidding. My mom reminisces about the glory days all the time and I'm jealous.

All I have are fading memories of the '93 Cup. I was in grade 3. I remember making a Stanley Cup poster with a big 24 and a CH and putting it up on my wall in my bedroom. Man, I was such a geek.
