Writing in La Presse today, Mathias Brunet heaps praise on Mike Ribeiro.
Brunet says he's been a Ribeiro backer since the early days of the player's career with the Canadiens. He says Ribeiro has rare vision, hockey sense – and attitude into the bargain.
Interesting story.
And in the Journal de Montréal, Ribeiro tells Pierre Durocher, to whom he's been whining about never being given a chance in Montreal, that Dallas ought to sign Michael Ryder.
Ryder and Pierre Dagenais were Ribeiro's linemates in Montreal.
hmmm. Ribs is a whiner, we don't need him. but speaking of people we do need, am I the only person left in Habs Nation that wants to re-sign Michael Ryder? This guy is GOOD. Give him a 2-3 year contract to show some confidence in the guy, and put him on the 3rd line with Chipper and Lapierre. That's a line that could score goals. He'd also be useful on the power play, maybe on the point? with that shot of his... I feel that he should be given another chance. He's had a couple great seasons, and one bad one. ONE MORE CHANCE!
Your kidding me, right?? O god, this guy has no life. But heck, take ryder if you wish. A man's trash is anothers' treasure, no?
gohabzzzz
I wonder what was Gainey thinking when he shipped Ribeiro to Dallas in return for Niniima ?
Its much easier trying figuring out what was Dallas GM thought processes in the trade.... he simply took advantage of another GM's lapse of coherent thoughts and instantly improved his team's lot.. and at a bargain price at that ... and still competitivelly priced ahead within the equation of what it will now cost them to harbor the deep scoring depth at center they now have (Ribeiro, Richard, Modano).
With Ribeiro's departure we compromised the scoring depth of our team during the 06-07 season and went about it in a generic no name kind of way regressing one more time into non-playoffs participation.
What was Gainey's first reaction when he hitted the UFA market at the end of that season ? Restoring our scoring depth at centre was his first reaction and Briere was going to be brought in at great expense to replace what was
already in our possession prior to the trade.
I wish Gainey's scheme about investing more in the offensive aspect of the game in his last press conference would have occured 3 seasons ago at the eve of the newNHL era because mistakes like the Ribeiro trade wouldn't occured and we would be ahead of where we are now.
As of now, according to the press conference, Gainey will still be looking to locked in an offensive forward.... in order to increased the scoring depth of our team down to its third line as he said .... so yes, were are back to square still trying fixing the basic foundation ... instead of being at a further point where fine tuning a contender is the order of the day.
Gainey may have thought that yes the guy is talented and can score some goals. But if there's a personality conflict, or isn't good for the team's chemistry, or just has a bad attitude then maybe he needs to go. Sometimes you have to decide what's better in the long run for the team.
Personally I have played on teams that have had great athletes or were the top point getters but their attitude stunk and once those types of players were let go, it proved to be a good thing in the long run because the team's chemistry improved.
I dont know about chemistry but our team's on ice cohesion certainly took a dive the year of the trade and many spiritless performances were recorded troughout that season ending in an early exit.
Since the trade lacked logic one would be tempted to interpreted it an a speculative and esoteric manner as you proposed but the fact that Gainey recognised having made a mistake on Ribeiro would suggest otherwise..... I think he simply failed to evaluate Ribeiro's potential as a valid top two center and with Koivu showing aging signs of late this will end up costing us valuable parts in order to trade up for some top lines center to assist Plekanec on those.
Our need to replace Ribeiro is not a fabulation and Gainey's attempt in signing Briere on the first summer following the trade attest to such a situation as being the case,... its ironic that Briere is essentially the same type of player than Ribeiro is and that they both were among the top centers in the league this year with but 3 points in difference among their respective totals.
Pleky would have developed in the same manner if Ribs was here?
I think not, and I'll take Pleky over Ribs every day of the week and 3 times on Sunday.
You are completely wrong. Ribeiro never would have been good on the Habs. Just wasn't the right fit.
I can't help but feel that if Ribeiro was still with the Habs, a lot of people would be singing him praises! He had a great year (83 points in 76 games, one point behind our team leader who played 82 games) and that is the reason he is getting so much (negative) attention from Habs fans. Why bother? He had a good year, good for him! Last year Ryder was a hero, this year, he's getting bashed like a Terry's Chocolate Orange! Next year, Ryder will probably be the next Ribeiro and get bashed again for having a good year and not playing for the Habs. The whole blow rumors, why even bother bringing that up? Rumors are rumors, they are going to fly, I personally base my opinions on facts!
Bye Bye Ribs, stay away.
WTF!!!!!!!!
The Nashville Predators have agreed to a seven-year, $31.5 million contract with forward Martin Erat. Erat was due to become a restricted free agent.
Erat, 26, scored a career high 26 seasons this past season and tied a personal best with 57 points.
2007-08 Nashville NHL 76 23 34 57 -3 40
2006-07 Nashville NHL 68 16 41 57 +13 50
2005-06 Nashville NHL 80 20 29 49 0 76
2004-05 HC Zlin Cze 48 20 23 43 +7 129 -
2003-04 Nashville NHL 76 16 33 49 +10 38
wow, Higgins just got a heck of a lot more expensive!!!
Idoit GM's in non-hockey markets are going to ruin it for everyone... don't they realize you can't pay everyone that scores 20 goals $5 mil!
Riddddiculous!
ribeiro's still bitter...
The habs are like an ex-gf...he's still in love with them even though the habs don't want him so he'll throw back-handed comments at the habs every chance he gets.
Anyone see the winning Phantom Finnish goal against
the USA..
How on earth could they allow that after the video review? Were NHL staff working the game?

Tortorella had a very professional reaction on TSN, imo.
Ex nihilo nihil fit
tortorella is such a douche...how does he hold a job??
Well, that's true if you don't consider of which profession he might be a member. I've personally always suspected him of being a professional hitman.
http://habsloyalist.blogspot.com
Nah, JT, Concord, MA hasn't produced a hitman since the Revolutionary War....
I liked Tortorella as an auto thief better. ;-)
Haha I've completely forgotten about Pierre Dagenais. What ever happened to him? Is he playing somewhere in Europe now?
Yes, he's playing in the hockey mad country known as Austria.
Having 39 points in 41 games this season...
Agreed on the 'cooler heads' prevailing with no suspensions handed out... one look at the replay and you can see that Osgood deliberately put his stick in the way of Ribeiro's face...
On top of that, the slash wasn't as vicious as some make it out to be and as Bob McKenzie points out, if Osgood's chest protection can stop a 100 mile/hour slapshot, do you really think a two-handed poke by Mike Ribeiro would hurt him?
If it were a defenceman and Ribeiro, one game each, but because its Detroit's goalie, even one game could be monumental...
It was a reaction/retaliation play, and Ribeiro shouldn't be proud of it, but can't be suspended for it either...
That being said, Ribeiro's actions and his backhanded comments concerning the Canadiens continue to demonstrate a total absence of class, and I for one am glad he will never again don the Bleu-Blanc-Rouge...

thanks for the link ZepFan2.
Ribeiro's still not worth it. Gainey wouldn't have holded out on his off-ice antics for another two complete seasons just for the chance to see if the kid would straighten up. he wasn't impatient at all and did the right thing trading all three of the Amigos at the time. they were a cancer. what do you do with cancer? you tell me.
Whoa, I can't stand Ribeiro. I just don't believe he should have gotten anything less than Osgood would get.
Some were acting as if Ribeiro had slashed Osgood for no apparent reason. That's the only reason I posted the link. That, and I'm bored.
July is just soooo far away...
Dallas can take all the rats of professional sports they want, Ribeiro.... Owens.... whoever.
lets just forget everything below the bible belt, unless it's florida; a team we'll have to worry about before the cup final
Ribeiro - Every GM has a player that will be their cross to bear during their tenure as leader of an organization - Mike Ribeiro will play that role for Bob Gainey during the next few years. So be it. As we have said before on this site, the only real issue was the poor return that we received for Ribeiro in the trade with Dallas. I'll still take Plekanec over Ribeiro now and in the future.
Ryder - Another player who is probably about to turn the negativity of the lockout into a personal gain in terms of his next contract. (Nobody ever said that the salary cap would be fair to all players). Boston has been rumoured and now even Dallas might be a possible suitor. But if Ryder is really smart, he may want to hold out and go to a team like Vancouver. The new GM will want to make a splash and there will be less competition for icetime with the Canucks. In some ways, his situation in a lot like Brunnstrom's signing. Even though he's not a top tier player, Ryder will still be pursued by a handful of teams that will try and outbid each other for his services. The quick fix. Oh well. I'll take Sergei K over Ryder any day of the week. Like Ribeiro, I only wish we had of received something of value in return (at the trade deadline).
The Original 24 Cups
"I'll take Sergei K over Ryder any day of the week."
Why not both?
ZF2 - because in reality Sergei took Ryder's job away from him this year. That's why I made the comparison. The only spot we would have for Ryder next year would be as our 3rd line RW. We can't pay a guy big coin to play on the 3rd line and Ryder wouldn't come back knowing that was his fate. Same goes for PP time.
The Original 24 Cups
24 - Why does anybody have to take somebody's place , last year Ryder could have stayed on the 2nd line with Sergie and Higgins play with Lapierre and give us balanced lines for once. The reason Ryder wasn't given that opportunity wasn't coin but Carbo and it's as simple as that.
