Stars – Wings V

posted by Mike Boone at 9h35 EST on May 17

Afternoon hockey sucks ... especially when your team isn't playing.

It's an absolutely glorious sunny Saturday morning in Montreal. Forecast calls for clouding over this afternoon, which I'm hoping for so I don't feel like as much of a loser sitting in my basement at 1:30 p.m. watching Detroit and Dallas.

And I hope the weather here is wretched for tomorrow afternoon's doubleheader: Canada-Russia, followed by Philly-Pittsburgh.

I like the Wings to close it out today. They don't want to go back to Dallas, and Marty Turco can't win at the Joe.

Unlike the Penguins, who rolled over in Philadelphia Thursday night, Detroit played hard in Game 4. And if the refs hadn't blown the call on the Datsyuk goal, who knows?

The second period produced some of the best hockey I've seen in the playoffs. Maybe there will be more today.

I was looking at getting a satelite radio and I want a portable one like an ipod. Anyone know if thats a good idea and are they reasonable for purchase?

AFternoon hockey on a sunny day..bleh. Big Brown wins the Preakness....on to the Belmont, what do you think Mike...next Triple Crown winner??

Mike Boone's picture

Beautiful horse, and a great ride today. Desormeaux just let him go from the top of the stretch and he killed them all. The trainer said he knew it was over when Big Brown was sitting comfortably third in the outside on the backstretch. A mile and a half should be no problem. I think he's got the best shot in recent history.
BTW, the greatest sports event I've ever seen on TV was Secretariat in the Belmont. What was it? 24 lengths and gaining?
(Best I saw live was Canadiens-Red Army on New Year's Eve, 1975)

31 lengths and coasting and I agree that it was a great event to watch.

Mike - I stated this a few months ago and was shot down on this site. So be it. I will state it again. It was the greatest hockey game I have ever witnessed.

The Original 24 Cups

Big Red finished the Belmont winning by 37 lengths, he was racing alone for most of it. It's on youtube, not great quality, but take a look if you haven't. BTW, he's my new photo, he was a beauty.

Big Brown was really convincing at the Derby and today, I'm not crazy about nose to nose finishes, just like I'm not crazy about seven games in the playoffs.

Hopefully three weeks from today we can watch history in the making.

And the lone Canadian horse stumbled off the start and never recovered and finished around 10th.

Beautiful picture.

Good question, was about to ask if we will see history this year.

It's a good name for a Triple Crown winner.

Moey's picture

I hope so, it's been thirty years, he looks pretty impressive. His name sort of reminds me of a big poop. I call him BB for short.

The Teacher's picture

He shoots off like a BB gun? Not bad.

30 years is long enough I agree, just not for the Leafs.

Three cheers for Saku winning the bronze at the World Championships!

Chuck's picture

Hey, at least a Hab won SOMETHING this year! ;)

Let's also hear it for Markov, who is guaranteed at least a silver medal in tomorrow's championship game.

Andrei Markov's getting a medal as well!

can someone tell me why the games this weekend are afternoon affairs? NBC? like their ratings are not that great. They say they will go to horse racing PREGAME show if the game is not over and yet the hl lets them choose the game time?

Sehs's picture

I think half the Swedish national teams plays with Detroit and Dallas...

Mike Boone's picture

Still sunny.
Time to walk the dog (not a euphemism!)

Mike Boone's picture

Game 6.
I was sure Detroit would win today.
So can Philly pull it off in Pittsburgh tomorrow?

Mike Boone's picture

Osgood stays in forever. Then they get a bad icing call.

Mike Boone's picture

Lidstrom makes a bad pass. Collars getting tight here?

Mike Boone's picture

"A little chink in the armour"? "A seed of doubt"? I'll say.

So what does anyone think of signing Hossa in the offseason?

Mike Boone's picture

No.
Too expensive, and not the missing piece.

sidhu's picture

Totally agree - he will demand $8m+ and he is a good supporting cast player, not the dominant franchise player we need (e.g., he played with Alfredsson in Ottawa, Kovalchuk in Atlanta, and now Crosby in Pittsburgh).

Mr.Hazard's picture

Hossa plays on the Crosby line?

Ex nihilo nihil fit

Mike Boone's picture

Yes, with Dupuis on the other wing.

I would like to see the Bruins overpay him big time!

Mike Boone's picture

Morrow: what a player!

The Teacher's picture

Wow, I thought Morrow had him.

edit- he did, he didn't have the crossbar though.

Mike Boone's picture

That's two bad penalties on Holmstrom. That's awful.
