Red Wings – Stars VI

posted by Mike Boone at 16h42 EST on May 19

Victoria/Patriotes Day is overcast, chilly and damp in  Montreal.

Hockey weather.

Alas, no hockey .... except on TV tonight.

Hands up everyone who thought this series would go to a sixth game.

You have to hand it to Dave Tippett for rallying his troops. Playing without Stu Barnes and Jere Lehtinen, Dallas has been full value for the two games it's won since falling behind 3-0 in this series.

And props to Marty Turco. He ranked as the best goaltender in the Final Four, and Turco has played that way to key the Stars' resurgence.

He's even won a game in Detroit.

And Turco will get a chance to win anoher one at the Joe if the Stars hold serve at home tonight.

Should be a good one.

Detroit in 5

Pens and Wings, should be a great final. I give the edge to Detroit. A ton of experience against high talented youth.

Detroit's aged D and all too ordinary goaltending will cost them the Cup in 6. Pittsburgh's blend of youthful enthusiasm and high skill level will prove to be too much for Detroit.
Osgood backstopping to another Cup? Don't think so.
The President's Cup winner because of its weak division won't find goals too easy to come by. The two things in their favour is the extremely long time before the finals start and overall experience. They will be calmer sooner on Saturday, but, overall, this is the Pens first Cup since '92.
Of course, I have been wrong before. :)

'The President's Cup winner because of its weak division'

not sure that statement holds water.
Detroits winning percentage vs
Central Division .578
North West .825
Pacific .750
East .750

ebk - This year the Wings did play better against other divisions but when you play weak teams (40% of your games) in your division year in and year out the toll isn't as drastic and pressure packed as other divisions , Carolina has the same easy road and it's not right.

Detroit's so-called "aged D and all too ordinary goaltending" allowed them to roll through to yet another Cup Final when nobody (i.e. analysts, layman hockey fans) gave them the respect they deserved.

That excuse about Detroit's weak division is getting so tired... Detroit demonstrates a perfect combination of skill, character and smarts on the ice... their leadership and composure, from the top of the organization to the bottom of their roster, is intimidating, and the Wings would have won any division in the game...

That being said, this should make for an interesting matchup... Detroit's experience vs. Pittsburgh's 'youthful enthusiasm', skill vs. skill, will vs. will, and perhaps most interesting, Babcock vs. Therrien...

One thing's for sure... this series will NOT be decided by which team has the greatest flaws, but by which team executes to the best of their ability... so don't look at Detroit's age or Pittsburgh's inexperience to excuse the result...

Wings in 6 - write it down, take a picture....

Winner in six at least, hopefully in 7. Because after that, it's a long, long time until the next meaningful hockey game.

My friends. This is the time when Crosby will shine.

Mickey Ribs was a - 3 today eh.

EAT IT.

Ribs was underrated when the Habs traded him, but he's a bit overrated now. He's riding a 25% shot percentage that's well above his career average and may not be able to continue, plus per behindthenet.ca, he's been putting up his points playing softer minutes. This is quite valuable, and he's a good player to have, but he might not be worth five million in the long run.

Most likely, he's a second-line center on a career year.

He had lots of trouble losing the puck a lot in the Detroit series, really looks bad.

Does anyone know Franzen's status? Will he be there for Game 1, or is it still a game-to-game evaluation?

Pens in 6.
You heard it here first.

The Wings lost 2 games to Nashville - and youre saying Pittsburgh will only win 1? Come on.

The Pens will win, I am certain.

I think it has more to do with the Cup experience on the Wings roster, as opposed to the Pens'. I'm not too certain but I'm pretty sure Detroit had a tough season against division teams, but did well against the rest of the conference. You can check D's schedule to confirm this if you like.

I will concede that Detroit's goaltending could be a huge factor, if they lose in the finals but, I think Fleury might be overwhelmed with Detroit's speed, and how fast they move the puck. He hasn't seen anything like it in these playoffs.

Lidstrom is gonna be the first European captain to win the Cup.

Good series. Hard fought.
And now we get our dream final.

Detroit in 6.

Correction: our replacement dream final. Like say replacing Scarlett Johansson for Penelope Cruz...

Take a look at the Stanley Cup champs. They're too good.
