Writing in the Torontro Sun, Steve Simmons suggests Michel Therrien may be in trouble in Pittsburgh.
The story says neither Brooks Orpik nor Jordan Staal wants to play for Therrien. In Orpik's case, not a big deal. But if the kindly old coach has lost Staal, that's a major problem.
More ominously, Simmons writes, Mario Lemieux is not a fan of his coach. If that's true, Therrien is toast.
I think Therrien's troubles began when the media started calling him "Mike".
It recalls the story of Berel, Cherel and Schmerel, three brothers my grandfather knew in the old country.
"I'm going to America," said Berel, "and evereyone will call me Buck."
"I'm going, too," said Cherel, "and everyone will call me Chuck."
"I've decided," said Schmerel, "to stay in Russia."
All these writers want to do, i.e Simmons and Garrioch is get there name in the press more and have it mentioned on CBC and TSN, that way they feel bigger about themselves. Their reporting is about as accurate as that blogger in Toronto who heard from "a source" that Led Zeppelin was going to play 4 shows in Toronto, have they made pigs fly yet? oh sorry that was pink floyd!
The Cincinnati Cyclones won the Kelly Cup and Cedric Desjardins (G) was the MVP. http://www.echl.com/cgi-bin/mpublic.cgi?action=show_news&cat=1&id=15451
There's no doubt in my mind that Desjardins will not be in Cincinnati next year. I've gone to few games and this kid has got the goods. Our organization is blessed to have so much talent in goal. With that said, how have we not been able to upgrade other areas of the organiztion by trading a goalie to another team. I mean everyone needs tham. We've got more than we need!
If we do make a trade this summer, I hope that the primary ingredient sought is someone (or someones) that can play our system of hockey. Not all the time will the best name out there be the best fit for our club. Ask yourself.... could Sundin, Jokinin, Lecavalier fit our style of play? Hamrlik was not the big name out there last eyar but we knew he would fit our style. Any thoughts on this?
That's great for the organization! Two titles in the last two years....one to go! We're nurturing a culture of winning, a group of young champions. How about that David Desharnais, all 5'6 of him with 33 points in 22 games! Bodes well for the future!
49 - Well logic would dictate that Desjardins would get a shot at the starter's job in Hamilton next year. I have no idea where this leaves Danis. He should leave and try and catch on with an organization that doesn't have a lot of young goalies. Classic case of the numbers game.
The Original 24 Cups
24 - Spot on , the numbers game , and Hamilton's line up should be quiet different next year , time will tell.
Good points Hammer. I dont believe that Staal is a coach killer. The article is an opiniated pile of crap.
I think you are right. There seem to be a couple writers (one in Ottawa and this one in Toronto) who spew this type of thing out. I admit it gets attention but it also gets old fast. Easier to sew discontent than figure out why your city's team is sliding I guess.
So a 19 year old player, can help tie the can on the coach? When did Jordan Staal's esteemed opinion carry so much weight? I may not be the biggest fan of the coach, and I am not trying to compare him to Scotty Bowman, but how many players on the Glory teams 1976-79 actually had an affinity for Bowman. If Sam Pollack actually listened to the players Bowman would have not made it a month.
Either Simmons is trying to stir up trouble in hopes that Stall will end up with the Maple Laughs or if he is correct, Staal should keep his opinions to himself. Being a " coach killer" at 19 can have no positive benefits for his career.
Simmons is full alot of hot air, this is the same guy that reported that Sundin would retire because of a bad hip and that Richard Peddie would be fired....lets just say that i would rather trust a rumour from Eklund before I trust something from Steve Simmons!
Mike,
Thanks so much for your wonderfully witty words of wisdom over this past season. I thoroughly enjoyed your online, in game commentary and looked forward to perusing them especially your exasperations when les boys weren't performing up to our expectations and your joy when the Laffs were performing way below!!
Now grab a cool one from the fridge, sit back and relax.
Any plans to continue with your commentary over the summer especially after a couple of those cool ones have whet your imagination? That would be worth it.
In any event, merci beaucoup.
Thanks for the kind words.
The blog will continue through the summer. I'll take some time off in August to get stoked for training camp.
One last hockey trivia question for you Mike. "Baron Byng High School" is mentioned in your Gazette bio. Given the probability that there were a lot of Byngs in the telephone book back then, the Baron had to have known the Lady don't you think? Obviously, she was a bigger fan of the game although the Baron Byng Trophy does have some appeal. Maybe we should come up with a category and some criteria for the award...
GM Ray Shero is going to have a busy summer or June for sure - click sports then go to NHL http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=fr&u=http://www.canoe.com...
NM - (This answer seems to fit here as well as elsewhere earlier today.) I can't believe that Shero won't take a serious run at the Cup again next year seeing that he has lots of cap space (for one year) and already has Gill and Sykora coming back (Sykora was less than brilliant in the playoffs). Shero's on the clock and he knows it. I would be surprised if the Pens signed Hossa over Malone, but if they do, then Malone will do just fine in a Habs uniform:-) If I were Mario I'd offer Hossa a one year contract equal to Crosby's with the idea that it would be his best bet to win a Cup. He could then walk after next year and hit the wheel of fortune at that point in time. I'm also waiting for Catherine Zeta Jones to return my phone call. Shania is also an UFA these days. All kidding aside, Pittsburgh knew this day was rapidly approaching but they will have Crosby, Malkin, and Fleury as a foundation for years to come. Who knows where the cap will go in the next 3 years and what the new CBA will look like down the road? Regardless, the Pens will be dealing from a position of strength.
As for our Habs, I'm keeping my emotions in check this month - we've been burned by UFAs before and there also won't be any 'can't miss' prospects at the #25 spot in the draft. Looks like more of the tried and true building block approach. I'll construct the scaffolding and you start to mix the cement.
The Original 24 Cups
Sorry man, I just talked to Catherine, and she says to stop calling. : )
1. www.flickeringpictures.com - not a hockey site, but still kinda neat
2. Josh Gorges on Montreal's attack: "They're comin', they're comin' and they keep comin'. Just line after line, wave after wave..."
24 - Hossa's agent won't let him sign a one year contract and Hossa will want security but with the Pens new arena being built i think they will do everything to sign Hossa. Besides if they can't sign him they would look pretty bad especially if Esposito ever turns it around which i doubt. I didn't know that Malone lived in Minnesota so i could see him going to the Wild. After this summer the Pens could very well look like a better version of Ottawa (top heavy)and may still be contenders but they won't improve much cuz of the cap and no wiggle room which is fine with me. On another note it seems that poor Patrick Marleau is being rumoured going to Columbus now.
Ironically, Columbus is also one of the teams rumoured to be serious about a major offer to Hossa. You're right, though. Hossa's not going to sign for one year. He's 29. He's going for a career deal of 7-8 years for 7-8 million per...minimum. And some team will pay it. I just pray it's not the Habs.
http://habsloyalist.blogspot.com
Everyone - see how it works - now Columbus has interest in Hossa as well as the Habs, Pens, and Bruins. This is how it all shakes down. Campbell is next, mark my words. Ryder? Once the big fish have landed, the teams who missed out will come calling. Nobody has even mentioned the Canucks yet. They need to make a big splash as well.
All of this is up for debate but I know one thing to be true - I'd take Catherine Zeta-Jones over Penelope Cruz any day of the week.
The Original 24 Cups
24 - Jones over Cruz? Are all these observations due to that lazor surgery you had last week, lol.
49 - Cruz has a big nose, a squeeky voice, and a two digit IQ. Catherine, on the other hand, has classic beauty, a flawless face, and is highly intelligent. Not to mention that she loves to golf. If Catherine Zeta Jones were Jean Beliveau, then Penelope Cruz would be Claude Provost (who won 9 Stanley Cups by the way.)
The Original 24 Cups
24 - I'm not sure about that so I'm going to do what the government always does and call for a study and i will have Static Ed (numbers) and ebk (incredible programs) lead this study whose report is due the week before the next season begins. Unlike the government this will be on the voluntary bases only, lol.
no report necessary....
Selma Hayek in a landslide
Who's the Jacques Plante?
http://habsloyalist.blogspot.com
and twice on Sunday :)
It's okay to get excited about the draft. Timmins knows what he's doing, and this is quite a deep crop. After the first ten picks or so, there's not really a major talent drop-off until about the sixtieth pick. I'm expecting the Habs to come up with something good with both their first and second choices, at least.
http://habsloyalist.blogspot.com
How about this one.
Don't know if everyone just heard
but CBC has decided not to renew its contract with the Hockey Night in Canada theme song rights owner.
I'm OUTRAGED. A piece of Canadian history - of our identity... oh CBC how you're just turning audiences away from you...
CBC claims "wanting to move in a new direction."
I wonder what that means for Bob Cole....
anyone elses thoughts?
Leave it to the CBC to get rid of the best thing about HNIC but continue to hang on to the likes of Cherry, Cole, and their latest boy toy, PJ Stock. The ship is sinking.
The best thing about CBC? pretty high up there in any event.
Ok ok I admit a little over the top....but I hear the song, then they show a Leafs game, so of course the best part of the broadcast is the song 'cause after that it's all downhill.
