Game Plan

TSN's Scott Cullen takes an interesting off-season look at the Canadiens.

In addition to signing a UFA such as Mats Sundin, Marian Hossa or Ryan Malone, Cullen suggests Canadiens could be in the hunt for Olli Jokinen, who is on the block in Florida.

I'd be ecstatic if the Canadiens somehow landed Jokinen. He is a horse.

I would love to have Jokinen, though I wouldnt like for Plekanec to be one of the players sent for him; were thin enough at centre as it is, but everyone else with maybe the exception of Komisarek, Price and Hamrlik (no idea why any team would let him go in the first place, and he has been the habs MVP in my opinion) could go.

Francis Bouillon, bowling ball on skates!

The Ducks Brian Burke will be eager to make a trade before the draft to give him cap space as he is already committed to 51 million and doesn't have the bread to resign RFA Corey Perry as he stated in the Orange County Register.... Barring a trade of at least one of the 18 players to whom they have committed just more than $51 million for next season, the Ducks do not have salary-cap space to re-sign right wing Corey Perry until after he becomes a restricted free agent July 1, General Manager Brian Burke said.

Here's an interesting thought.....suppose the Leafs were to make an offer to RFA Corey Perry and Burke did not match it.

Nawwwwwwwww...Burke isn't that unsrcupulous! (or is he?)

Tommy B - I don't think Burke who has worked for the NHL would but that piece of work Richard Petty , i don't trust him as far as i can throw Ian Buzz Cole after a five course meal. Petty thinks he's running the Vatican and he's anointing a Pope who has all powers. I definitely think the NHL should look into this conflict of interest. Very good point.

Streit, Latendresse (Or Chipchura), O'byrne, 2 nd round choice received from Washington for Jokinen...I say or Chipchura only because i think they'd want a center in return...As much as I like chipchura, replace him with Chris Kelley as a checking center...Let me know what you think...

Foe those that want to save the entry drafts picks with team associated with pick the Columbus Dispatch has the 7 rounds for their draft party - (after Draft-o- licious article)..... http://blog.dispatch.com/cbj/2008/06/draftolicious.shtml

Montreal has no 5th round pick (Rivet trade) or 6th round pick (Ribeiro trade). I say Dandy can go if someone will give us a 5th or 6th round pick.

The Original 24 Cups

24 - That's my thinking also , we sent Michael Leighton to Carolina for a 7th round pick so I'm sure we can get at least what you say for Dandy , good move.

Unfortunately I think Dandy will likely be bought out but I sure like your idea better!!!! We got strung along by the Thrashers up to the last minute at the deadline or I am sure Gainey would have traded for some draft picks at the deadline. That has to be sore spot as he held onto all of his tradeable assets hoping for the big fish and we lost a chance at getting something for the likes of Ryder et all. I don't blame him for trying though.

Krob - You don't blame him but you must admit it was something a rookie GM would get sucked into. You always have plan B or C open just in case. An example - Fletcher as of last week has more than 6 deals that have been offered and that have to be evaluated and it's not even the week before the draft yet (six different deals). You don't put all of your eggs in one basket and i thing Bob was a bit smug on Feb/26/08 , lesson learnt i hope. Anyway i like Dandy but he just doesn't fit even with his versatility. This coming week should be really interesting and will surprise a lot of people with the action that it will create , the New NHL.

I disagree. If you have other deals on the table and trade Rivet to San Jose in 07 then the gentleman GM Burke goes on a public rant and fans scream.

The next year you try and better your team for a deep playoff run by filling a critical hole and fans ride you for not trading away what parts you had for draft picks.

Pittsburg paid very high for Hossa, maybe too high. If they can't work a deal with Hossa the team takes a step back. If they can the team faces a cap wall just down the road. Would the Habs with Hossa have made it to the finals? Maybe. Would they have gotten the cup? No.

Mr Gainey has done a fine job. Instead of the corporate bookeeper concept he has rebuilt a farm system. Instead of half a**** get in shape ideas his teams have a fitness training program. Surprise, fewer big injuries during the season. The Habs make money, and now they're making players and progress.

Look at the Price-Huet-Halak situation. The only logical thing to do was bite the bullet and move Huet, even if it hurt and some fans scream.

As for Fletcher's six deals or more on the table; good for him. Maybe he'll do some of them and they'll be better next year, or get a shot at the 09 number one pick.

I think we as fans are always hoping for the team to land someone like Mr. Crosby, somehow, some way. That doesn't usually happen, even if, like the Habs, you have a team built around an imaginary Sydney Crosby ;-).

Anyway, Dandy isn't versatile, he is below the team average. He needs to play somewhere where he will get some minutes and money, remember this is how he makes a living. He will likely go for futures.

Why is playing an exciting, scoring, atacking style of game a turn-off for players in the league? If I were able to choose any team to play for, Id rather play for a team built on scoring rather than Hitchcock-style of defending for 60 minutes.

Interestingly, Cullen rates Halak higher than Price (barely, but still)

Thats not his rating, thats TSN's based purely on statistical performances.

Malone would look GREAT in a Habs uni...

Just talked with a fellow in the know and just remember the name Ryan Malone dressed in red white and blue. The word is interested.!!!

Ian Buzz Cobb - Would that fellow in the know be Eklund, lol.

The Habs have nothing to trade for Jokinen that's not going to weaken the team beyond what he brings. I look at net gain when it comes to a trade...does the player you get replace AND improve on the contributions of the player(s)you lose? Jokinen may replace some of the players Gainey would have to trade to obtain him, but whether he could outstrip them in terms of contribution is another matter. I think, considering what Martin would ask for Jokinen, it would be a tough assignment.

My one fear here is that Gainey has proven his tendency to throw caution to the wind when it comes to obtaining the elusive "impact" player. I was glad he lost Briere and Hossa, and that the Sundin trade didn't work in exchange for a lot of draft picks and Higgins. I don't want to see his tendency to overpay come true on a Jokinen deal because I don't think Jokinen can be better than the collective group Gainey would have to trade for him. I'd rather throw the bank at Mats for a year. THAT'S only money.

Very true, considering we would probably have to send a center in return and the only one i could see martin wanting is plekanec. I have to ask, would you make a pleky for jokinen trade? I can't see this trade ever happening one for one but if we threw in a draft pick and prospect.

J.T.'s picture

I wouldn't trade Pleky for anyone. I think he's either your number one centre, or he's the hardest-working, most complete second centre in the league. He's so under-rated it's not even funny.

Amen. I love Plekanec.

Anyone watching the NHL awards??

McLean is annoying enough on HNIC, he's worse as the host of the awards!...Not funny at all!!!

I hope you're right. Be terrible to get up close and find out he was just another mule.
