NHL Awards

Tuned in too late to see Carbo lose but just in time to see Patrick Kane win the Calder and a Lifetime Achievement Award – so new they haven't named it after anyone – for the great Gordie Howe.

Funny they're flashing "Hart Stories" when we all know Ovechkin is going to win it.

There's a lot of filler material here to pad this out to 90 minutes.

And Ron McLean.

I think I'll watch basketball.

But not until I watch Lidtsrom win the Norris.

Dion Phaneuf looks stricken. What, he expected to win?
First surprise: Brodeur! I was sure it would be Nabokov.
And Bob Gainey presents the Hart to ...

 Alexander the Great

 Missed the Selke.

Datsyuk?

All of the NHL stars are staying at the hotel that connects to my condo. So this morning I was walking to work and who should show up, Guy Carbonneau.

Off the record - and this may be the opposite of what others have to say - he is an A**. Now, by contrast, 2 nights ago I was talking to Kirk Muller who is a really really nice guy. As is Jarome Iginla.

Anyway. Good riddence to carbo on not winning.

They're all a bunch of lowlifes and ne'erdowells compared with Elvis, who came over for beers last week. Brought the Yeti with him, too.

1. www.flickeringpictures.com - not a hockey site, but still kinda neat
2. Josh Gorges on Montreal's attack: "They're comin', they're comin' and they keep comin'. Just line after line, wave after wave..."

JB_15's picture

Pretty sure I acknowledged that my opinion may be different than that of others.

Excellent reading skills there fellas. He was a jerk to me. End of story. All I said was it was an honour to meet him.

Dude couldnt even be bothered to talk to me for 5 seconds after I tell him he's one of my idols. It was a beautiful day. No one around. But you're right guys, super classy.

Barts's picture

Give it a rest dude. Guy is actually a very nice guy. Had some beers with him in a bar in Ottawa.

Nice way to jump to conclusions. I've had Carbo show up at a movie theater I manage in Montreal and he's never been anything but really nice. People will stop him and try and talk to him and even though he's obviously there just to have a relaxed night out, he's always nice to them.

JB15 - That may have been a bit of a snap judgement on your part. You meet a guy for a few minutes outside the hotel and all of a sudden you conclude that he's an A**? That's like saying you met Penelope Cruz outside your condo and you think she's a lousy actress. Ease up man, give Carbo the benefit of the doubt:-)

JB_15's picture

Your analogy is grossly inaccurate.
It would be like meeting penelope cruz and saying she's a bitch. Did I say "carbo was a jerk, and ergo, a bad coach?"

If youre going to comment and tell me why I'm wrong for crying out loud at least say something cogent.

JB15 - In all honesty I thought about that when I originally answered your post (in jest) but I didn't have the heart to refer to her using that term seeing that this is Mike Boone's blog:-) You must always show respect for the head honcho.

I must say that I totally disagree with the selection of Boudreau as coach of the year. First of all: He earned it after 3 months work. Yes, he took his team to the playoffs but check out who his team played the last 4 or 5 weeks of the season. I think they played two contenders that whole time. I think that it's impossible to rate him as a coach untill he has a full season under his belt. And I'm not saying this because I think Carbo should have won the award. Although I think he should have finished higher that Boudreau. Habs were predicted to finish anywhere from 10th to 13th and they win the conference. Remember now, the playoffs don't mean anything. And, besides, the Habs went further.
Babcock, Julien and Carbo should all have finished ahead of this guy in the voting.

GO HABS.

Streit, Latendresse (Or Chipchura), O'byrne, 2 nd round choice received from Washington for Jokinen...I say or Chipchura only because i think they'd want a center in return...As much as I like chipchura, replace him with Chris Kelley as a checking center...Let me know what you think...

"If I wanted to hear from an ass, I would fart..."

sidhu's picture

Not an unreasonable proposal. For us to land Jokinen I think it will (unfortunately) take one of our better forwards (Higgins or Pleks) though Chipchura is a blue chip prospect (leadership potential all over him, captained the Canadian WJC team to gold).

What do you think about this: rights to Streit, Chipchura, and the 2nd for Zajac (young, big center) and Clarkson (a beast who scored nine in his rookie season)

I disagreed with the MVP award, I think Malkin should have got it. After all, he really stepped up his game to keep the Pens at the top, I doubt that any Habs player could have done the same if Kovy had been out for twenty plus games, or any Caps player if Ovechkin had been injured. Ovechkin is Ovechkin, he will always be the Caps MVP for seasons to come. Also, I thought Carbo should have won the Adams, he has no superstars, it was a bigger coaching challenge for him to get them as far as he did.

I loved the little kid when asked if he could play on any team in the NHL what would he pick, without hesitation he replied "the Montreal Canadiens".

I loved that kid's response too........right in laffs country too!

Blake Wheeler the 21 year old winger 5th overall in 2004 entry draft whose 6'4" 220 has spurned the Coyote's contract offer and is a free agent is being courted by Sather and Lamoriello for their respected teams the Rangers and the Devils as Wheeler visited New York yesterday. The Minnesota native who went to the University of Minnesota isn't exactly thrilled by the Wild and may opt for the Black Hawks and their youth movement who are high on his list...Are we asleep at the wheel again or is he too big.... more.... http://www.nypost.com/seven/06122008/sports/rangers/rangers_eye_wheeler_...

NM49 - I think you would really want to have the inside scoop on this guy before you made a final decision on your question. He was an off the wall choice by the Coyotes, they nurtured him along while he was in college, and then presented him with a great contract. Under a loophole of the new CBA, he chose to test the market. Fair enough, but this is from a guy who hasn't done a damn thing in hockey yet. He's another Brunnstrom. Regardless, I would say go ahead and sign him - it's not like we have many forwards in the system that have his attributes. I hate to say it, but I think the chances of this American kid coming to Canada are pretty slim. New York, New York.

The Original 24 Cups

24 - You always say that about Americans , Rolston an example , and i don't know where you get that. We have examples in Higgy and Komo who love it here and in the summer I've met dozens of American tourists who rave about Montreal and keep on coming back (maybe not this year - Gas) and no decenters. When you see Sather and Lamoriello catering to Wheeler it means something to me cuz i respect them and besides the price is right.

The only surprise was Brodeur. Boudreau deserved his trophy. Lidstrom, Ovechkin and Datsyuk were locks.

And now the NHL has a Lifetime Achievement Award. This is a great bridge to the game's past and a nod to the great players who built the league. It couldn't have been Butthead's idea, could it? Nah!

Did anyone else notice the excessive hooting and hollaring after every player was announced?

Barts's picture

No, Carbo was robbed; there are no Alex Ovechkin's in Montreal. And Ron McLean is torture...

RudeMood19's picture

I wouldn't say he was robbed, Boudreau deserved it as much as him.

Datsyuk got the Byng and the Selke ..

After Carbo lost out on the Adams I turned it off..That's enough of McLean until next year...lol

Well at least we got some good news....

Kovalev named to the NHL second all-star team

Price named to the NHL all-rookie team

I'm happy to see Kovalev getting some props but I don't understand why Crosby isn't there, or Datsyuk. Is there some kind of rule that prevents them from being nominated?

vaya_'s picture

Crosby was having a great season but his injury took him out of roughly 30 games. No doubt about Malkin being the #1 center, but Datsyuk could have been another choice for the 2nd team. I guess they thought Thornton had a better season. Maybe we don't hear enough about him out east, he did have 96 points...
