Former Canadiens first-round draft choice Ron Hainsey – 13th overall in 2000 – has signed with Atlanta: five years, $22.5 million
contract.
Nice raise on the $900,000 the 27-year-old earned with Columbus .... and yet another indication that puck-moving defencemen (see CAMPBELL, Brian) have become a very valuable commodity in the NHL.

Brooks Orpik, who's an old-fashioned bone-crunching defenceman, is staying put in Pittsburgh.
He's signed a six-year contract for $22.5 million, $3.75 million per. Orpik, one of the better Penguins in the Stanley Cup final, was making $1 million
puck moving defensemen are at a premium...and we gave Streit away. strange days...
Streit was a defenceman that couldn't play his position.
That's just a foolish comment.
i agree.
Atlanta and Columbus - these teams are starting to fall off the face of the earth. Once all this UFA euphoria is over, we might want to stop and check the health of some of the lower level NHL teams. Who needs another lockout when you could possibly have contraction? Sometimes, reality bites.

I'm sick of it all. I'm sick of free agency and millions of dollars made by guys to whom "second-tier" is a compliment. I just want Gainey to sign either Sundin or Fedorov and move on. Enough!
Hey Boone...congrats on being the guest speaker at a major university. I only get to read books to classes of grade ones!

Agreed. What the hell is there a salary cap for anyways? These salaries are getting huge and there's absolutely no reason for that trend to slow. Think about it... Ryder got a RAISE compared to last year!!! I don't mean to bash him because we all know he gets enough of that around here, but where is the logic in giving a player who had a terrible season a raise?
Guess I just picked the wrong line of work...
As Chicago's GM said earlier today... '' I wish I was a hockey player ''.
Sportsnet is reporting something else...

Hey Mike!
You're coming to speak to my class at Concordia tomorrow!
Excited?
Ohh... you get to meet Mr. Boone! ;)
I'm jealous.
What class is this??

Concordia offers a class on Chantal?
This isn't a surprise at all. He's the Campbell consolation prize. But hopefully Komisarek looks at the Orpik deal moreso than his old friend's new deal when it comes to his contract extension.
Uhh??
It's showing on sporsnet that he re-signed with Columbus!?
