... but there's a Facebook group called Habs Girls.

I swear on my mother I'll add a link to Habs Guys the moment it's launched.

Hey Mike, I don't recall you asking my permission to use my Shania photo! LOL.

First of all Facebook is a social community, if you don't WANT people looking at you then OBVIOUSLY do not post a pic. It's not rocket science. I didn't hear any outcry when Latendresse was pictured with no shirt on the cover of a gay magazine. This is the internet and if you don't know what makes it popular, then disconnect. SIMPLE We are a little bit more enlightened here in Canada (MONTREAL ESPECIALLY) a little bit of skin doesn't hurt anyone. JUST ASK THE DISNEY NETWORK.

Ladies, here you go - perhaps some evidence that the site provides equal-opportunity imagery:

I also distinctly remember some discussion about how dreamy Kyle "Freddie Prinze Jr" Chipchura was. It was no biggie then.

Thanks to all of you (from a woman) for your respectful and humorous replies regarding the PC-ness of Mike's posting the Habs Girls site. Please put me first on the list when anyone discovers a Habs' Guys' site :D
PS - I don't read the four habs fans site because of the photos but I support your right to do so! Hooray for freedom of speech and of the press!

I know this probably won't be popular, but I really don't think agree with these kinds of posts on HI/O. I appreciate the feminine form just as much as the next guy (maybe more), but I think these kinds of posts and the comments that follow have the potential to alienate some people from the site. I know it's all in good fun, Boone, I just think that all the members of HIO need to be considered.

Shania Twain is a FINE CANADIEN WOMAN,Dude, and I'll be thinking that as long as I'm hormonal ,lol

sidhu's picture

I think at this point we understand that Boone is not someone who would attempt to alienate any of the readership on the Habs I/O site - in fact it's against his direct interest to do so.

If you dont like it dont click on it..??

I'm with you 100%
I'd wager that not a one of the women of the Facebook group gave her consent to have *you* all looking at her and expressing whatever commentary you would like to do to her. It's not as insidious as Playboy's themed "Girls of [insert absolutely any way to categorize, compartmentalize, and reduce a woman here]" but the women pictured are actual human beings with thoughts, dreams, and ambitions of their own that go far beyond "I'm a Habs girl!" and have nothing to do with the sexual fantasies of those who look at her.
But that's just my view.

Go Habs Go!

One could argue that they assumed the risk by having their pictures taken in the first place. After a picture is taken, one doesn't automatically retain an absolute veto on when and where those pictures are published. Sure the person in possession of the picture must observe some sort of discretion in respecting the girl's wishes, but that's more of a courtesy to be extended by the possessor of the picture to the girl, not something that's enforceable against anyone who sees the pic online thereafter. And, as Moey explains below, some women may want their picture online. How are we to determine or distinguish between which girls wanted and didn't want their pics online? That decision should have been respected in the first instance by the person in possession of the picture.

In short, the facebook group is the best.... group.... ever.

Moey's picture

Do you think that those pics were loaded into facebook without their consent? The sole purpose of taking and uploading those types of pictures of yourself is for one reason only, for men to leer at. Hopes, dreams and ambitions have nothing to do with it, unless those ambitions include being discovered for Playboy.

I dunno, the odd shot of Shania Twain baring her midriff is a drop in the bucket compared to what FourHabsFans posts on a regular basis. That's the relativistic argument, anyway.

The absolute argument is that no women have expressed any sort of negative sentiment regarding this post, at least as of this posting. Indeed, the comments from women seem to be offering their own appreciations of current and former Habs' physical charms.

It's only my perspective, but I like that HIO isn't a sanitized, corporate blog, but one in which the bloggers and the participating community can express themselves freely within established limits. We're all mature adults here. And whichever kids are looking on are unlikely to be too scandalized by any of this.

I understand and respect your perspective. I just disagree.

Jay:

I appreciate the response, especially its tone. However, I don't think that the fact that women haven't complained about this is evidence that they would condone or appreciate it. It was difficult enough for me to raise it, so I would imagine it would be even more so for women who I would wager are the minority on here. In fact, I'm sure that there are some women on here who aren't bothered by it and that's fine. But the intention of the post, although I'm sure Boone meant no harm, is somewhat sexist (i.e. it's a link to go and check out woman). In the past (and I can't recall exactly which posts), similar posts have generated discussion that was extremely sexist.

I don't have a problem with looking at women (or men or whatever), I just don't think we need it on a blog about hockey; a blog where I think everybody should feel welcome to come and post and chat. And furthermore, I don't think it's a matter of being politically correct, I think it's about respect. I can recall post in the past that, although I doubt any harm was meant, it did offend and hurt one of our regular posters. I think we have to be mindful of these things.

I'm just raising this for consideration, and I hope it will generate some discussion.

Jay in PA's picture

I guess I dispute the notion that this blog can remain so strictly focused on hockey. Along with many of the respondents to this post, I've been here since the blog started, and I've seen conversations wander across reasonably personal topics that have nothing to do with hockey or the Habs--especially in the off-season, when we're hungry for something to talk about. As much as we are a community of Habs fans, we're still a community of people, and our interests will wander. Sex is one of the topics we will wander into, though I haven't seen anything here that would shock anyone's granny.

I understand your point that it would be best to keep to the topic of hockey and render the issue moot. Given the conversational nature of this blog, I just don't think we can realistically be expected to do so and still maintain the vibrancy of our community. And anyway, if a bunch of pretty girls want to show off their devotion to the team, I have no problem with someone taking note of it here because it is related to hockey and the Canadiens. Again, that's an issue that FourHabsFans tend to flaunt with their use of sexy photos that have laughable connections to hockey and/or the Canadiens.

It seems that you and I are on either side of a question of proactively protecting the sensibilities of those who would otherwise not speak up for themselves. I think we should accept that developing a thick skin is the cost of participating in such a large and diverse community. We have safeguards in the site guidelines and links for anonymously flagging inappropriate posts should anything go beyond reasonable bounds. I'm comfortable that that's enough.

she did this with a diffrent sweater in each of the cities she was in. I don't think we can call her a habs girl. However that doesn't mean I wouldn't like to call her! anybody got her number?lol

Y's picture

Looks like Shania's got a big gap in her smile there.

Are you sure this isn't "Hick Girls" masquerading as "Habs Girls" ?

Ian G Cobb's picture

That's funny, but it is part of the mike...( Not to be confused as part of Mike.)

lol...didn't notice that till you mentioned it

Mike - don't bother... this is fine.

Mike, I must say this is by far the best topic you have posted on the HIO site! Kudos to Mike Meldrum for setting up the Habs girls site on Facebook! Hubba Hubba Hubba!

I remember the first time I saw that pic, when the Gazette printed it the night afterwards, and it still makes me just as sick as it did then. Shania Twain of all doesn't deserve to be able to wear the Rocket's number like that, regardless of the sequins or whatever. Ugh.

otherwise translated: lose the shorts Shania!

Mike, Mike, Mike. And I thought you were one of the enlightened ones. And here we were, not talking about Souray's eyes or Kovy's hair or Higgins' abs...all in an effort to be above all that. Oh well...

Mike Boone's picture

Not to mention Pleky's pecs, right?

Well, since you're the one who's seen him in the dressing room, I guess I'll take your word for that.

Brokeback Boone!

yathehabsrule's picture

not that there's anything wrong with that!

Moey's picture

C'mon J.T, when the guys are going gaga over Chantal Mc?? or Penelope Cruz, I don't see why we can't remark if a guy is nice looking. So Higgins has nice abs you say? Cool.
