I grew up in Park Extension, within walking distance of Dickie Moore's Dairy Queen on Jean Talon. Moore had a place on L'Acadie Blvd., and we used to see him driving around in his convertible with a Samoyed and a very dishy wife.
While "studying" at McGill University during the 1960s, I used to attend games at the old Montreal Forum. My fellow undergraduate reprobates and I would scramble up the stairs to get centre-ice spots in the top standing room section, where aged ushers didn't know or care what we were smoking.
I stood out in the cold for six hours to get tickets to the 1975 New Year's Eve game between the Canadiens and Central Red Army. With the exception of the birth of my daughter, the 3-3 tie was the greatest event I've ever seen in my life.
The Canada-U.S. Gold medal game comes close .... but I wasn't there.
I've been a professional journalist since 1974, when I joined the Montreal Star sports department. I've covered the 1976 Olympic Games, the 1979 Expos, pop music and MSO tours of Europe and Asia (classical musicians are WAY more fun to drink with than athletes). I wrote a TV & Radio column for 20 years and, since 2000, have written a City column for The Gazette.
The best part of being a Habs Inside/Out contributor is attending games at the Bell Centre. I think it's a great building: noisy, raucous and packed to the rafters with Montrealers and visitors who live for hockey.
And I still get goosebumps every time Michel Lacroix booms out "Accueillons nos Canadiens ..."
Having seen the Boston Red Sox win two World Series and the Pittsburgh Steelers add a couple Super Bowl titles, I suppose I can die happy ... but not before another Stanley Cup parade. And I'd really like my daughter to see a historic New Year's Eve game.
I like all the players. Covering baseball gives me a profound appreciation of pro athletes who aren't jerks.
My weltanschauung was summarized by the late great Bill Hicks when he said "all matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration, we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively, there is no such thing as death, life is only a dream and we are the imagination of ourselves."

We beat Pittsburgh and Washington but lose the 4 pt. games vs Boston and Philidelphia
WHY JACQUES WHY?
The "why" is twofold. Martin can not get this team up for games on a consistent basis. He continues to throw Price into games praying for two points. He tempted the fates against the Caps and got lucky. This evening, the fates took the two points back.

He has no game plan whatsoever. If he coached the Canadian team in the WJC this year, they would have lost by three or four goals to the US. I watch a guy like Dean Blaise behind a bench then look at Martin and just laugh. He's a total retread bozo.
The girl who sang the Canadian anthem, Nikki Yanofsky, is only 16. Wow, good for her. Plus she's a Montrealer.
She's done the anthem at the Bell Centre a couple of times.

I do agree with you. I just hate it when a guy turns into a check like that and opens himself up to an injury. I was taught never to do that. But, I was also taught never to block a shot the way Gorges did against the Caps.

We watched the game at a bar here in Philly and all these D-bags were clapping when they showed the blood coming out of Spacek... "you're supposed to clap when he gets up you a**holes". Classless. So frustrating! And JUST LIKE THE PLAYOFF SERIES, the second we explode for goals, here comes mommy with a whistle to clean it all up for those sniveling goons. Goddamn it.

The crowd at the game were booing Sacek as he came off the ice. Really bad. Anywhere else they at least polietly clap.
I was watching in the Wachovia Center and the entire place was booing, no one clapped when Spacek got up, and people behind me were mocking with "Ole, Ole, Ole."

Price consistently gives up 3+ goals a game, with the odd game giving up less. Even when he plays ok like tonight. Our team doesn't have enough offense to score 4 goals a game consistently. Play Halak 80% of the time till the end. That's it that's all.
Price played great in all 3 periods.
He let in ONE softie......
One was deflected by his own D-Man AGAIN.....

I can't blame Pricey for this loss. Price played well for 2 plus periods, one goal he should have stopped. Price was the one who played with heart until his teamates decided to show up.

Hammer did nothing that was a joke and if they was going to call him there was a few flyers that should have went with him. This game was thrown by theses refs as was many others this year. The fans that pay those prices to watch a fair game in Montreal should take out a class action suit against the NHL to force them to clean up their mess.
We must both be bluenosers, as we can clearly see that the NHL is fixed. I know, I know...you all will say paranoia, but seriously.....wake up!!! It's a business and it's the business of making sure the U.S. teams do well. To H..double hockey sticks for Montreal. The league doesn't care about the Habs doing well.

I can't believe a professional linesman blew the icing call at the end. That is really, really bad!
He didn't blow it. He made a "non call" because his next mortgage payment was riding on the outcome.
These pissants are a joke, an embarassment. It's not an anti-Hab thing it's simply incompetence. Or an OTB style scam.
What is really bad is that the officiating in other hockey leagues is so superior to the NHL. These guys are almost criminally incompetant.
It wasn't blown it was done on purpose and there were a few more they missed on purpose also.
A ref can miss a call, but an icing like that one should never, ever be missed.

I was of two minds about bringing up PK. We've rushed players in the past. He could, without question, benefit from another few months in the AHL. I didn't want us to ruin him.
He is so young. So reckless. He will make huge mistakes. Boneheaded turnovers, ill-advised pinches, poor penalties, losing his man like I lost count of the games I had to sit on the bench and watch that jerk 'Saint' Patrick steal my spotlight.
But this kid is going to be brilliant to watch for a long, long time.
I just hope Boucher isn't too far behind.

The officiating was hideous. Hamrlik gets called for a shove and then the Flyers are allowed to kill half the final minute by icing the puck, even though we were not on the power play. All three officials swallowed their whistles and allowed half our time to elapse. I guess they've never seen a team pull its goalie.

Didn't see the last period live, but just watched the replay of the goals and last minute. That crap in the final minute was such a joke. In the first period there were 4 players throwing punches in front of the benches and the play wasn't called and Hamrlik got a penattly for THAT!?!?
Really classy fans too, booing injured players. I mean Claude Lemeuix Spacek is not. I'm pretty sure that was real blood on his face and the towel.

Well Pk is here for sure now doesn't look like Spacek will be back and whats wrong with Markov. If Markov can't play for us he shouldn't play for Russia .
