Toujours l'homme de bon ton

When he played for the Canadiens, Cristobal Huet was a stand-up guy, taking the blame for losses and sharing the credit for wins.

Le cousin, as the French press call him, is that kind of person: a gentleman and a diplomat.

No surprise, then, that Huet is saying all the right things about sharing the workload with Nikolai Khabibulin.

Huet told the Chicago Tribune he is looking forward to battling for ice time during the 2008-09 campaign before taking over the No. 1 job the following season when Khabibulin's contract expires.

"We're going to push each other to play and to compete," Huet said. "It's going to benefit the team. He's definitely a great goalie. There's going to be competition, obviously, [but] it's always like that with any NHL team. This year is going to be a little more than the average team, but it's great. We're going to work together and make it happen every night so we can [get] some wins."

In his Foxsports.com column, Lyle Richardson – aka Spector – looks ahead to the 2009 free agent market.

Here's his take on the Canadiens:

C Saku Koivu, D Mike Komisarek, RW Alex Kovalev, LW Alex Tanguay
Komisarek has emerged as one of the league's best shut-down defensemen so expect the Habs to re-sign him before next summer. Koivu has long been a Canadiens mainstay but might have to accept less money to stay in Montreal, while contract extensions for Kovalev and Tanguay depend on their performances this coming season.

TSN has a feature on Canada's Under-18 team, which will play at  the Ivan Hlinka tournament in Slovakia.

The one to watch if you've started thinking about the 2010 draft: Windsor Spitfires forward Taylor Hall.

I really don't think gainey is going to let tanguay walk since he just gave up a first and second round pick to get him. He is also only 28 years old and his best years are probably ahead of him.

Tanguay was a great signing, your right his best years are to come.

RetroMikey's picture

We've got to be very careful for next year where we have to sign major players to contract extensions.
Bob has to manage his money tightly and with Mats Sundin doing us a favour by not wanting to come to play for us, is an added bonus where we can use the excess 7 million dollars we have freed up to do this.
2009 is going to be a big year in the free agent market more than this year. I see us grabbing a gifted offensive player where I predict we'll win the Cup next season!

"We will win the Cup only with Carey Price in the nets"

The Preacher's picture

The signing of Mats Sundin would not preclude us from signing our core players for the future. Thank you for your sermon in any case.

This prediction by Lyle Richardson is not really saying all that much. As far as it goes, it is probably true. Koivu will probably have to take a pay cut if he stays, and Komi is a priority to sign above the other 3. But he is only considering our top 4 UFAs. He fails to mention Begin, Kostopoulos, Bouillon and Dandy. Okay, sure, they are all role players that can be replaced much more easily than the 4 mentioned in the analysis. But then he doesn't mention the players that will be RFAs at the end of the season...Pleks, Higgins, Chipchura and Latendresse. And he does not consider any of these players in the context of the salary cap. True, he is looking at every team in the league, and so this kind of in depth analysis is probably impractical. But to ignore 4 RFAs just because they do not have the same freedom to sign elsewhere as UFAs, this does not make for a very complete analysis. Because those 4 RFAs will be tough to sign and stay under the cap.

I'm listening to the Lang chatter on CKAC right now, and it doesn't sound like there is much substance to it as far as it being official.

One caller just threw out a name of a player that Habs should go after: Tomas Kaberle!

I always liked Huet and he did a good job in Montreal. He was solid and always gave us a chance to win. The only blemish on him was the rumours of his involvement in the O'Bryn purse snatching incident. Is this Lang trade a fact?

The Cat's picture

I never heard of his involvement in the purse incident.

Huet had an eye a little grey legged goat at the local petting zoo because that's what they do in France, when not farting in your general direction. Some skank happened to have a camera phone and got some pictures of Huet stealing breast-milk to make cheese from the little grey beauty, again a quite normal occurance in France, when not shaving their testicles with weed wackers.

In walks O'Byrne, sees his goalies in trouble, grabs the phone and deletes the pictures. He get's arrested.

Why did Huet sign in Chicago?

Where is this Robert Lang trade source coming from?? Anyone have a link, or are we just dealing with a great rumour to help the day go by?

The Cat's picture

Id be surprised if Chicago let Lang go but who knows.

Screw you Matt's, I'm done entertaining the thought of you with the C.H. YOU MEATBALL !!!Hey ,Mike Boone, the next time you are tempted to bring up Huey and Ryder again ...PLEASE DON'T,besides there are other X habs to talk about like "What ever happened to Pierre Daganise?"lol Or whats Yani Niinaamaa"spelling ?" up to these day's?

CH1909-2009's picture

Mike, is there really a press conference at 3? The same guy on hockeybuzz who is claiming the Lang rumor is a done deal says there's a PC at 3.

The Preacher's picture

You have been reading a site written by the devil.

Habs64's picture

False info, trade canned.

joeybarrie's picture

Officially huh?

Odie Cleghorn's picture

Whew!

Habs64's picture

Robert Lang is officially a Montreal Canadien.

Edit: Maxime Tanguay also included in deal going back to the Habs, so deal is:

To Montreal: Lang and Maxime Tanguay

To Chicago Matt D'Agostini and a 4th round pick in 2010.

The Kostitsyn bro's, the Latendresse bro's and now the TANGUAY bro's all in the Hab's organization.

joeybarrie's picture

where did you hear?

joeybarrie's picture

BRETT FAVRE, BRETT FAVRE, BRETT FAVRE... First you say Mats is only ONE MAN, then you get upset at him for acting like just one man...I hope he decides to come back. The longer we wait the less likely it is. HOWEVER, how has he insulted the Habs. Did he promise us anything???? Did he even say that he was specifically interested in joining the Habs??? I waited, then I found out he wasn't practicing like he usually does in the summer. i doubt he will be back, and even if maybe not with us. BUT LET HIM DECIDE. If you say WHO CARES, you can't exactly point out how upset you are at him...

jrshabs1's picture

I hate Mats Sundin!! All Habs fans should agree. He's humiliated the Habs on the ice and now he is humilating the Habs off the ice, ENOUGH!! Who the hell is Mats Sundin anyway? The big meatball has spoke volumes by not saying anything and is trying to make a fool of a 5 time Stanley Cup Champion and the most storied franchise in sports.

Hey Mats, come back once you've won something!

I think an olympic gold medal is definitely a "something" considering it is the highest level of hockey that is played (I know the shorter process isn't as gruelling but the competition is better).

joeybarrie's picture

Easy with the won something, how many habs have a cup???

CrashTheNetCrashTheNet's picture

all the coaches and the gm for starters

joeybarrie's picture

oh yeah, by the way...4 gold, 1 silver, 2 bronze medals. World Allstar Team 4 times, World Championship all star team twice, world championship BEST forward once, 9 nhl all star teams and the Mark Messier Leadership award. And of course over a point per game for his entire career. BUT your right he hasn't won anything...

joeybarrie's picture

OH WOW, great point....

Drive_For_25's picture

The humiliating part is all the Habs fans who are waiting for him like we're nothing without him.
