Coming tonight: The life of Carbo

Being on the road with the Canadiens does afford certain advantages. Saturday, I wandered into the hotel restaurant at 8 a.m. and wound up enjoying a 90-minute breakfast with Habs legend Larry Robinson. No recorder, no notebook, just a terrific, casual visit with an icon of the game.

Then I spent a half-hour alone in the lobby with head coach Guy Carbonneau over a tall coffee to discuss, on the record, his two-plus seasons behind the bench.

We talked about how coaching in Montreal impacts pretty much every part of Carbonneau's life; the decision to return to the city where he starred as a player; what's harder, being captain or coach in Montreal, having done both, and how he views Saku Koivu in the role as the former; the advice he gets from fans (and there's plenty); the microscopic attention paid to every decision he makes, by fans and the city's famously fickle media; and the life lesson that coaching the Canadiens is proving to be.

(Carbo said he's able to leave behind a bad game to focus on the next one. Wondering how easily Saturday's disgrace against Toronto was to forget?)

The feature will be posted here late Sunday night, along with full audio of our conversation.

I think Carbo, Jarvis and Muller could have done a better job killing those 8 Toronto power plays ... wearing their suits and shoes!

one thing's for sure; I'm glad I'm not Carbo!!! Coaching the greatest NHL team in history in the most passionate hockey city in the world is one tough act!

I can't wait for this to get posted!! ........... "To you from failing hands we throw the torch. Be yours to hold it high." I STILL BELIEVE. I WILL ALWAYS BELIEVE.

The lucky orange tie that Carbonneau wore last night did not bring us luck. I blame the players, not the coaches in our embarassing loss. I really hate all this extravagant publicity surrounding the Centennial festivities this season. You have to wonder, are the players really focused this year as hockey players or distracted with these hoopla activities the Habs' Marketing Department is employing? "We will win the Cup only with Carey Price in the nets"

Matts Sundin will come on board in two weeks and the destiny of the Habs will change forever!

OH NO,not the Sundin rumors again,crap............

That's just trying to look for excuses IMO. They aren't playing that great.. It happens. We will be going on a a streak where we are doing SO WELL.. and the only thing we will be saying is.. THEY ARE PLAYING WITH HEARTAND PASSION AND TALENT.. and not that (they are getting caught up in all the 100th years activities) My point.. they are going through a rough patch right now.. it has nothing to do with anything outside the ice.. its inside the rink.. they just are not playing great. theyll rebound.

I echo your sentiments exactly Gary. ........... "To you from failing hands we throw the torch. Be yours to hold it high." I STILL BELIEVE. I WILL ALWAYS BELIEVE.
