I'm starting to get confused though, when I used to play sports competitively you'd have bad games or slumps but you'd still try your best.. the other teams were just better than you or were hungrier for the win... I want to say that every team facing the Canadiens is prepared to take on "the best in the east" when they get on the ice that night to play the Habs but the Habs do see very lost out there... I really hope they can get back on track :)

Hmmm...a 60-minute meeting? Did the team attend the whole thing, or just show up for twenty minutes of it?

Good one. But they were likely there, it didn't involve a puck, a stick, or teamwork.

Great comment...Agree 100%...with the exception of one guy who quietly plays 60 minutes every night with almost no fanfare...Tomas Plekanec. He always does the little things right, never makes bad decisions with the puck and unfortunately is spending most of his time killing penalties this year! The rest of the squad needs his work ethic.

Being a huge, huge Pleky fan, I completely agree. He's not called The Mechanic for nothing. I like him because of his work ethic, which is the most valuable asset in hockey.

bravo J.T. you hit the nail on the head.
Since the beginning of the season (much like parts of the last), the habs have been mostly an underachieving team. As professionals they ought to be out there giving their 110% in each and every game (with or without any motivation from Carbo or anyone else).
Here's hoping for full 60 minutes,
cheers

This is completely off-topic.
What if the NHL decided that wins from shootouts only give the winning team 1.5 points instead of 2?
I think ideally you'd give 3 pts for a regulation win and leave the rest the same but then that would make comparing point totals with previous seasons cumbersome and confusing. I think this way would encourage teams to try and finish the game in regulation or OT and make the "skills competition" aspect of the shootout have less of an impact. Personally I like having the shootout but a shootout win to me is a "lesser" victory than one in regulation or OT.
Another optional addition to the OT format that I like is adding a 5 minute 3 on 3 OT period. The only problem is a penalty. Is having a 3 on 2 situation fair? I wouldn't mind if they just extended the 4 on 4 OT period to 10 mins.
I also like the idea of going with 5 shooters in the shootout instead of 3 but I'm fine with the current format. I think they should definitely add that any penalty that doesn't expire before the end of overtime should disallow the player who committed the penalty to take part in the shootout.

Submitted by A. Berke on Mon, 11/10/2008 - 19:54.
IMO, any additional 5 mins or whatever OT is not practical esp if the team has a game the next day and is trying to catch a flight or a bus.
1.5 points is goofy. Instead very much like soccer, the winning team in regular time gets 3 pts, any win in OT or SO gets 2 - losing team in OT or SO gets 1 pt and nada for the reg time loser.
the extra point should be enough to give the necessary incentive and motivation to try to win the game in regulation.

Enough about super Tom. Everyone knows he did not try to hurt Van Ryn, he was just trying to forecheck and get the puck. Too bad some of the other Habs wouldn't put in the effort that TK does every shift of every game. We have too many players trying to score and padding their stats for the big contract. Saku said it right earlier in the day, too much offense. With the talent on this team they can score 2 or 3 goals a period just off turnovers.
Too many guys in the press box too. Trade GBL, Dandy and Lats and get a good #2 or #3 defensive dman. You can't blame the goalies either for the past few games. No help at all from the forwards and the dmen can't cover everyone.
Maybe these couple of games will knock some sense into a few players heads and we can start playing like a team again instead of a bunch of want-to-be superstars.
Submitted by Hockey11 on Mon, 11/10/2008 - 19:38.
A #2 or #3 Dman would cost a mint!

Submitted by A. Berke on Mon, 11/10/2008 - 20:01.
Actually I agree that we need a good top 4 D-man esp one who can shoot from the point on PP. In fact I would add to the above three a second round pick or one of the younger ones that don't have much chance of making the team.
Yes a good #2 or 3 D-man would possibly cost an arm and a leg, but Hamrlik's price was reasonable and we have the room in the cap I believe. The real problem is: who can we get?

KK Hockey - Kostopoulos suspended three games ..... http://www.kuklaskorner.com/index.php/hockey/comments/kostopoulos_suspen... ..................... Press release from the NHL:
Montreal Canadiens forward Tom Kostopoulos has been suspended for three games, without pay, as a result of being assessed a game misconduct during NHL game #197 against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Nov. 8, the National Hockey League announced today.
“While it is my determination that Kostopoulos did not deliver a check to an unsuspecting opponent, his actions caused injuries,” said NHL Senior Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations Colin Campbell.
Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, Kostopoulos is considered a repeat offender. Accordingly, he forfeits $32,926.83 based on the number of games in the season (82), rather than the number of days (186). The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

It is really disheartening to see a team with so much talent put in so little effort. In the past when there was a lack of effort it was frustrating as a fan but not as much because the talent level and expectations were lower. I wonder how much the pending UFA status of so many players on the team is creating a problem. You would think this to be counter-intuitive since they should want to play hard for the best results but the best team results aren't always "in line" with the best individual results.

I am a die hard Habs fan and a big fan of Gainey and Carbonneau but tell me when they are going to wake up and see that Lats is never going to pan out as the power forward they so desire. I have watched every Habs game for the past 2 years...this guy cannot take a pass, cannot give a pass he is not an NHL calibre hockey player. Not to take away from Lats I am sure he is a great person and he just got put into a bad situation. It is time for the Habs to part ways with this guy or make him what he should be a career minor leaguer. I hate to write anything bad about my beloved Habs but I read the posts and can't believe that some of you think this guy will turn out to be our saviour or a decent NHLer..I know I will get some people who disagree this is fine it is my opinion but coming from somebody who has played lots of hockey and watches a lot of hockey it is not hard to see that he just does not have the NHL talent to compete night in and night out. The game in Toronto was bad but we will bounce back, just need to tighten up the "D" and protect our goaltenders a little better.

Submitted by Hoegarden on Mon, 11/10/2008 - 17:22.
Guillaume is not going to be our saviour as you put it and no one really expects him to be. He just started his 3rd year in the NHL and many are ready to give up on him. If you look up the careers of some of better known "power forwards" in past years, the likes of Leclair, Bertuzzi, Tocchet, Murray etc, you'll see that they were not exactly terrorizing the league in their early years. Bertuzzi had to put in 5 full years before he became a 30 goal scorer at the age of 24. When John Leclair reached his full potential as a PF, scoring 50, he was 26. You can check the others and the results are the same.
I am one who believes he'll make it, if not in Montreal, then somewhere else. Trevor Timmins, the man we all praise for his flair in drafting promising talent, was high enough on him that the Habs had to trade so he could be available.
Submitted by Ton on Mon, 11/10/2008 - 19:08.
Come on just because Timmins drafted him doesn't mean he will be a success. I could give you first round picks of Montreal in the past (Bobby Shehan drafted by Sam Pollock) that were drafted by legend GM's and they didn't make it. Read the thread Lats doesn't have hands, cant hit, cant take a pass, cant score , cant fight and he's likely not going to develop. If he is let him to do it in the minors.

ONLY 75 MINUETS OF PRACTICE..If I was the coach.I would have them play 3 periods and make them skate thier little butts off. Then have them shoot, shoot and keep shooting till they can score a goal!!!Then they will be in shape for tomorrow nights game and play hard because they don't want to have a practice like that before every game LOL

aren't the habs in a good position to have dandy/begin as "extra" players? it is reasonable to think at least one forward will be hurt long term at some point in the season. plus dandy could play defense if needed. i like the current line-up.
better defenseive play and the results will come.
Submitted by Hockey11 on Mon, 11/10/2008 - 15:57.
This team has not lost with Dandy in the line up
Anaheim No Dandy
Debacle comeback on the Island No Dandy
SO loss in Columbus No Dandy
Terrible Tumble in Toronto No Dandy
What more can he do? Why is not on D, the position we signed him to?
Why do other get a free pas after poor performances?
BGL missed camp and is TOTALLY ineffective, look at his minutes ans shots.
Why is Breezer playing at all? He is a number 8 D at best.
Carbo and Gainey need to review the players performances and reward the ones going with more ice. This stultified four line procession is getting old. Sure the team is winning but last year they were tops and barely got out of round one.

I agree... If Laraque is not going to do anything about our goalie or talanted forwards being pushed around and being run at, then he should not play and Dandy should take his place. That in itself will be a huge upgrade.

A couple issues should be at the forefront of the Habs turnaround. First, discipline on the ice - we've been taking too many penalties of late, which keeps our players on the defense, doesn't allow us to roll four lines and establish an offensive flow to the game, and keeps non-PK'ers (like rockstar Tanguay) off the ice. The Habs need to stop thinking that their talent alone can bail them out of a game regardless of how many PKs they have to kill.
Second - fiscal discipline. We have Dandy and Begin eating up $1.725 and $1.025 on the sidelines. I think BG should let Dandy (at least) go to free up space and to inject some more affordable youth (D'Ag - he has 9 goals on the farm) into the lineup. If we are seriously going to make a run this year, we may also need space to acquire a deadline player (like past teams have done with Hossa, Brad Stuart, etc.).
That said, I stick by my view that SK74 should be playing with Koivu and Tang; Higgy with Lang and D'Ag; and Lats with Max and BGL/Kosto, yielding:
AK46-Pleks-Kovy
SK74-Koivu-Tang
Higgy-Lang-D'Ag
Lats-Max-BGL/Kosto

Dandy has played decently, and so has Brisebois. In fact I'd argue that Brisebois has contributed more offensively (and defensively) than Sergei- and you've got Sergei promoted to second line duties. How does that make sense? Seems to me Sergei needs to be sent down to refocus.
And I don't think that bringing up an unseasoned kid makes sense- lighting it up on the farm is one thing, can't compare it to playing in the NHL. More importantly, who do you send down?
Our issue isn't scoring goals, we score lots of goals. Our issue is giving up ten thousand shots a game, taking penalties (as you point out), and not playing 60 minutes.
PS Dandy and Begin and TK all play 60 minutes, seems to me that they're all bargains.

Submitted by sidhu on Mon, 11/10/2008 - 15:28.
Assuming that Dandy has played better, Carbo isn't using him much, so what's the point if he's better in a vacuum? I like Begin a lot, and they do play a full 60 minutes when given the chance - but the fact is they aren't playing much so that must be factored into any cost/benefit analysis.
SK74's play has been stronger of late (nice PP pass, game tying goal against CBus). And everyone seems to argue that Higgy can't close - so I suggest we switch the two.
Yes, playing in the A is different than the big time, but only if D'Ag is given a shot can we see if his success on the farm can translate into success here. More importantly, it sends a strong signal to players who may be complacent (e.g., Lats) that their jobs aren't safe and that there are hungry players ready to step up if they aren't.
Submitted by Hockey11 on Mon, 11/10/2008 - 14:54.
Sidhu
How can you let Dandy go when he is better than Briseboise or Obyrne. The bigger question is why are we pissing money down the drain and even worse, why are we paying Brisebois?

Submitted by sidhu on Mon, 11/10/2008 - 15:23.
Assuming he is better, the problem is that Carbo doesn't believe he's better, which is why OB and Breezer have been played more regularly than Dandy.
If the coach doesn't want to play him often, and he costs what he costs, then seems to be the solution is to let him go and save the money.
Submitted by Hockey11 on Mon, 11/10/2008 - 16:04.
No, Carbo has him pegged as a forward for some reason, Striet is gone and Dandy should have simply taken his place at the very least as #7 D. If the guy can play D for Scotty all those years he knows how to play.
This Brisebois resigned has never been rationally explained. Someone ask Carbo why Dandy is a forward over D for Breezer, there is a question I would like answered.

Submitted by sidhu on Mon, 11/10/2008 - 16:29.
Agree with you there - Breezer should not have been resigned. At least he has found the back of the net on the PP.
Don't get me wrong, Dandy has value - he's a solid team player and has won 3 cups. It doesn't seem, though, that Carbo is intent on using him in an optimal way and it's better for Dandy and for us if he can utilize his talents elsewhere - he will get more playing time and we will save some $.

Not even a penalty on the head shot that KO'ed Kostitsyn... he's not a Maple Leaf. No punishment to Weight for nearly killing young Sutter, nor Pronger for taking Datsyuk's head off with a flying elbow recently either.
