Alex Kovalev's top-shelf backhand goal in the third round of the shootout earned the Canadiens a 3-2 victory tonight in St. Louis.

Montreal battled back from 1-0 and 2-1 deficits to earn the win, a positive start to a three-game road trip that now moves on to Raleigh, N.C., Tuesday against the Hurricanes.

Steve Regier had a pair of goals for the Blues, in the first and third period, his second on the power play. They bookended the second of the year by Montreal's Andrei Kostitsyn, who was assisted by goalie Carey Price, the third point of his career. Kostitsyn then would set up centreman Robert Lang for the game-tying goal late in the third.

The Blues had a chance to win it in overtime thanks to the acting ability of goalie Manny Lagace, who went down like he'd been harpooned with 22 seconds left in the third period when he was brushed by Canadiens captain Saku Koivu.

With Koivu in the penalty box into overtime, the Blues came close with a 4-on-3 advantage, then Habs' Tomas Plekanec charged away shorthanded to just miss on a partial break with defenceman Josh Gorges.

Price saw the Blues' Brad Boyes fire wide to begin the shootout, then stopped David Perron, buried in the pads, and Keith Tkachuk, with a brilliant left pad save. Koivu missed on his deke and Andrei Kostitsyn hit the post before Kovalev skated straight in on Lagace, head-shifted then deked to the goalie's left to score high.

The Canadiens, 9-4-2, arrived in St. Louis having lost 2-1 to Philadelphia the night before at the Bell Centre. The Blues, 6-8-1 at the opening faceoff, had just snapped a six-game losing streak and hardly were on fire.

Montreal's power play wasn't, going 0-for-10 tonight, including one 4-on-3 opportunity in overtime, to extend its futility streak to 0-for-20.

Canadiens defenceman Francis Bouillon left the ice in huge distress during overtime after being drilled from very close range in the throat, it appeared, by a shot. The injury was said not to be too serious.

Kovalev prepares to deke Blues goalie Manny Lagace and go upstairs with his game-winner in the shootout.

Lots of people are saying that as Kovy goes, the Habs go, but I think the PP as a whole dictates our fortunes more than he does. If, instead of going 0-for-20 on the PP lately, we go a decent 5-for-20, our last few games look awfully different. The PP can be fixed easily enough -- either find a cannon to put on the point or change up your PP style and mess up your opponent's game plan, or preferably both. Since the book is out on us, Carbo will change up the PP strategy in Carolina and we'll be successful. I'm not leaping off any bandwagons yet. 1. www.flickeringpictures.com - not a hockey site, but still kinda neat 2. I keep saying it and yes I'm going to keep saying it... DAMMIT CARB WAKE UP!!!!!....get those PETS off the DAMN TEAM! my G*d man what was that weakling wet noodle doing out there? wow, close up and all, the fear in his face as the elbow connected, and then the half crying looking for mommy as he falls to his knees....GIVE ME A DAMN BREAK! we need players that are fearless, like CUBE and a handful of energetic youth who can't wait for the greatest opportunity of their life. Its ridicules that we don't have that element in the lineup. Dandy, Begin, Kostop, & Breeze need to go either to the farm, waivers, buyout or trade, IMMEDIATELY. Yes its tough and they have bled for the team, but we need our best on the ice...and that includes PAX, CHIP, STEW D'ags and WEBER as sub. Enough of trying to make it work by shuffling the lines, that makes it worse! because the wrong players are on the roster. I wish I was wrong.

Bugs's picture
Then rejoice, Professor! Cuz yer wrong. Our "best" on the ice should be Bulldogs? Are they DOMINATING the AHL or something? Did I blink while Weber rocketed 15 goals this week? Is Pac-Man so super-fantastical that he will make a Van Damme Sudden Impact on the 4th line??? Cuz those are the guys you named. What's the problem? The 4th liners? Gimme a break. We replace the 4th line with Bulldogs and we're going to the Show, that it? Calm down, prof. Pull yehself togevver, would yeh? the problem with what you've suggested is that our horrible defensive zone coverage will become even more horrible with 5 rookies being inserted into the line-up. Canadiens' style is to be defensively responsible at the same time of being able to go for the jugular on the offense. dandy, begin and kosto are all defensively responsible players on the 4th line. the rookies you've mentioned will be asked to fill the void...stewart and chips may be able to fit in...but the others will have a helluva time keeping up with the NHL on the 4th line.

If it ever looks like the Power play wont click for the year, those guys you mention should be given a chance on the team I agree, because the team now as it is will not be able to get ugly wins as the year goes on.

Uhhhhhh.... no....

Laraque out of the line = Win..... get rid of him

I was having a discussion with my roomy about Carbonneau's reaction to the last few games... Basically, he said Carbo needed to give the guys more positive feedback in the media, and get hard on them when things are going well. He gave me as example Chealsea's (soccer) loss to a 4th division team. (They are in 1st division and should have killed that team) Coach came out and said: "My boys played as hard as they could and I couldnt ask for more, it's on me." I didn't fully disagree with him, but I found it hard to agree. Carbo is an emotional guy and I mean, when the guys play 60 minutes, we win. When they dont, we lose. How do you back up players when the effort isnt there? That being said, Carbo said about last nights game: ''I thought tonight was one of our best games,'' Canadiens coach Guy Carbonneau said. ''We were able to battle back in the third and win it in a shootout, so we're really happy.'' Now, I watched the game... I'm nowhere near convinced it was one of our best games. I'm curious to know what are the thoughts on why Carbo would come out and say that. Unless I really didn't see how good we were last night... Or does it mean we were really that bad in the last 16 games... Cheers. Only passions, great passions, can elevate the soul to great things. Denis Diderot

I think we have to bring a youngster up. Sometimes a different mix is good for the team. If we aren't ever going to try Dandy on defense then maybe it's time to cut the ties with him. Trade a few surplus parts for a draft pick and make some room on the big club. Also, Carbo should go basically with three lines and use the fourth line far less. Bowman used to get the 4th line out once a period or so to stir things up or to put fresh legs out there to forecheck. That might be a thing to try. But - I love the win over St. Louis. Those two points count just as much as a 3-0 shutout over Detroit or San Jose. Plus, Kovy and AK46, our two most talented offensive threats, were able to contribute.

ALL STAR VOTING Some people just don,t get it, and that includes the NHL. Two words that are disappearing from our society "respect and integrity". To many people, not only in sport have never discovered the magic within that comes from giving of themselves for others. One only way to be fair to the league, fans, and players is to give each player and coach, on all 30 teams that has played or coached in this league for a full year, 7 votes. 1 vote for each position on the ice and 1 vote for an all star coach. This will at least insure that the men that most deserve the honour get it from the people that really know. This nonsense of people voting for the colour of a players eyes is not what this honour is all about. I hold the NHL totally responsible for the lack of protection, integrity and respect that has been taken out of this marvelous sport, including head protection.

Sliver24's picture
The All Star game is a joke. Other than the guys going there for the first time the players don't care about it anyway. Most of the ones that have been there a few times would much rather have four of five days off to spend with their families or head south for some sun. In any case, if this is suppsoedly about the fans it makes sense that the Habs are over-represented in the game when it's here in Montreal.

Good to see you up and at it early Friar Cobb. I lot of truth in what you say on the voting, looks like kids deciding who will be class President. The way this is being done has nothing to do with talent or skill.

I've heard many times on this board that people want to see is productive powerplay... They are also saying that Streit was a big piece... Well, yes we do need to improve our powerplay... but we can do it without Streit.. As much as I loved the guy, we had a one dimentional powrrplay last year... Look at the playoffs... once teams adapted we were useless.. Why?? Well we had 2 plays.. pass to kovy or Pass to Streit.. Now this year we have a chance to change it up a bit. The way I see it, when the powerplay explodes it will be dominant because we can not simply reply on one player.. The power will have to be a team effort.. Guys like Adrei Kos., Higgy, Latendresse... The players that stick to the front of the net will benefit... We had good chances last night... We hit 2 posts.. So I say, give it a few weeks and it will be a powerplay we can rely on a little more. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Koivu for Prime Minister...

twocents's picture
I agree, there's huge potential for this team to have a devastating multi-faceted power play. There is time for this thing to work itself out. Your point about the playoffs is spot on and I don't understand why people would want to return to such a predictable formula. Right now Jarvis is trying to create something that will be hard to adjust to and will serve us well when it counts, in the playoffs. Not to mention that our inability to rely so heavily on the PP this season has caused positive strides forward in our 5 on 5 play. Which again is very important come spring time when the penalty calls are less frequent.

I think a lot of you, and you rswinter, need to watch more of RDS and listen to what Joel Bouchard, a semi-recently retired NHLer, has to say about the Canadiens. He is so well-spoken, understands the game, and he is a first-hand opinion in my mind, since he has played post-lockout NHL hockey. "If they lose tonight, it's not the end of the world...they have the talent to pull it together...it hasn't been a great game but it's 1-1 going into the third, it's not the time to panic and they can win...even though St.Louis has many injuries, an ugly win can give you a little bit of confidence..." Parts of Joel's quotes from tonight's game.

i don't watch the intermission banter but the few times i've caught him, Joel stood out (even more so compared to the a lot of the RDS team) as an intelligent and reasonable hockey man. i also caught the quote you put up and couldn't have agreed more with him. btw, i don't think they stole the two points tonight. contrary to Benoit Brunet's mute-worthy opinion tonight (which, btw, changed quite a bit after the Lang goal and now Andrei Kostitsyn and company weren't too bad after all), i thought they played quite well for a team playing with falling confidence. let them play. the scrooge media in this city have way too much time on their hands.

captaink4life's picture
Not a very good game but I'll definitely take the two points. At the end of the season they're going to be worth just as much as the two points we got in the win over Ottawa on Tuesday. _____________________________ Koivu for Prime Minister :) Drive for 25!!

"YOU KNOW...YOU know! you know!" hahahahaha Lang

habs_nessa's picture
hahaha so true i was just gonna write that! you know..you know...you know... lol

I think we should have lost the game. I'm happy we won but i'm not an idiot. This team does have many problems right now and if they expect to make a cup run, they're going to have to fix things. I'm not a bad fan because i'm critical. I believe that this team is capable of doing great things but not with the way they are playing. We have so much talent but we just don't utilize a lot of it right now. I've never been a Carbo fan even last year when I thought he was given too much credit for our play. I love the habs and hope they win every game but this is a blog to voice people's opinions. As much as I hate people who go to far are those who think being critical makes one a lesser fan. Tonight's game doesn't mean anything but 2 points. That's what I believe. Being crushed by Toronto and Boston still resonates and winning a shootout game against St. Louis should not make people forget last week. Until we can play 60 minutes on consistent basis will this team be ready to meet lofty expectations.

Fabio D's picture
100% agree with you. I've been holding off on posting/making comments until we hit 20 games in the season. Its been a choice of mine for the last couple of seasons. Gives the team time to gel. But I digress. The rash of recent blow outs and no shows from the Habs against Toronto, Boston and the week before a "fortunate" comeback win against the Islanders I felt compelled to support your post. This team is NOT playing like the team expected to finish first in the Eastern conference and be a Stanley Cup finalist. They've played brilliantly in some games (Detroit, Ottawa) and ghastly in others (Toronto & Boston). Consistency is what this team needs to achieve and what will make them a legitimate threat in the East for the Cup. They way they've been playing....they are a long way from establishing any kind of "fear factor" in the conference. The team is lacking an identity and is struggling to achieve one. Tanguay has been one of the more consistant players and has a good pick up thus far in the season. Despite my earlier skepticism on his productive capabilities. Koivu has shown up, as has Kovalev. Where are the other 4 players form the top 2 lines?? The K bros, and Higgins?? the K's chip in here and there, but are often smacked around. Higgins? He's reminidng me more and more of Michael Ryder. Pops one or two now three in one game out of 10 then disappears. Then there's Carey Price....well...he's good...had a couple of stinkers...but all goalies do. I won't go there. Detroit has set the bar in the West by being consistant, winning the games they should be winning and losing ones that could go either way. They've been conistant and have all their lines and players contributing. Not sure why that philosophy is not working in Montreal. Love the team, but living in T.O. and flying the Bleu, Blanc and Rouge has been painful as of late. Specially with the Leafs showing up to play most games. Still a long way to go til the spring time....but come on guys get it together. Goals is what wins games, let in 10....score 11 to win it. Go Habs go!

Well... if you listened to carbo's interview we played a pretty good game tonight. And he thinks that one of these days power play will start clicking again - which means 'I am not going to make any changes to it. It will just start clicking... magically... all by itself' Today we have played 60 minutes of consistently average at best hockey against the worst or one of the worst teams in the league. Sure, lets take a win as a positive, but lets not get carried away and think that we've played a good game.

Man, less than 24 hours later they played a game after traveling where the effort WAS there, got some positives out of it (Kovy, Lang, Kosty) and people are complaining..... I'll take the 2 points, thank you very much.

t1tan5's picture
God damn...imagine if we had lost?!

our PP is 0-20. We beat a last place team. We won because their goalie let in a softie by AK and should have stopped the Lang goal too. Am I concerned? absolutely. But I figure if this team wants to tank, go ahead. But the fans won't get behind them if they go AWOL, and certainly won't support them. It's not losing that bothers me. It's a lack of effort that does. Habs did not play well tonight, again, and if they had been facing a better team, it would have been a loss. Our D is still looking quite awful and our offence is non existant, not too mention an invisible PP. other teams don't mind taking penalties against us anymore because they know it won't hurt them. I figure we'll lose in Carolina and maybe Ottawa, but nothing has changed or improved.

Garbo's picture
"But the fans won't get behind them if they go AWOL" ... why should they care about the fans, with people like you amongst our ranks?

Gabx's picture
If you watch the en direct du vestiaire on rds at the end you see bouillon's injury...it caught him in the jaw, on the left, and you can see they gave him stitches. he says that he panicked as soon as it hit him but after they did x rays and everything's ok.

Xtrahabsfan's picture
Glad to hear he's ok,it was one of the few things that woke me up during the third.

Just listened to Carbo's press conference on RDS. He thinks we played a good game... Hu-hum. Ok. That explains the expectations I guess for this year. I guess it all depends on a defition one uses.

Xtrahabsfan's picture
Timo,I think Carbo said it was one of their better games this year? And JIM M THINKS SO TO ???

You really don't have to make things up just because you had no response to my previous post. Some people might think you're capable of lying.

I didn't hear that during the interview. He said that work was there and the assignments were completed, and that power play will end up working one of these days. Maybe there was a piece they didn't show... Unless this is a joke and am just falling for it.

Xtrahabsfan's picture
Audio ,top page "Carbo"

Oh well... he's on crack then. I was listening to one on RDS

So why was Lapierre a healthy scratch tonight?

Xtrahabsfan's picture
I believe the reason Lapierre sat tonight was for the same reasons B.G.L. sat ,Gainey,Carbo,Murray friendship.

I was going to join everyone else in telling Bob Gainey how to make this team great, and then I was going to tell Carbo how to put his lines together so we can all put our hands together. Only while the game was on I was trying to assemble IKEA furniture. Dammit, I can't tell Gainey or Carbo how to put anything together...

Sneezer's picture
lol - good one! you must be the one honest guy this board tonight! ____________________________________________________________ Why don't we have a defensive coach? Insanity? Or arrogance?

The team is great they just need to remember what made them great. No doubt the coaches are telling them over and over but they can't take shfts off let alone periods or whole games. I am happy with the win but until we have a stretch of games with goaltending, defense and the offense all clicking it is going to drive us crazy because we saw hints of what we could be last year.....and we want it back. I am confident it will sort itself out but in the meantime it has been painful to watch because from a bird's eye view it seems so obvious what they are......actually aren't doing.

Kaptain K's picture

This is ridiculous. We lose, it's the end of the world. We win, it's the end of the world. I'd rather get my hands dirty and win than to go home a clean-ass loser.

Sneezer's picture
Don't be histrionic. Barely beating a lousy team and waltzing through the whole game is not a huge confidence builder after what we've seen lately. Winning is all the matters in the playoffs. In the regular season it's how you win - and whether you look ready to make a run. Do we look ready to you smart guy? ____________________________________________________________ Why don't we have a defensive coach? Insanity? Or arrogance?

t1tan5's picture
At least we can build on this. Again...winning ugly is better than losing pretty. Also, winning is all that matters ALL the time, not only in playoffs. I would rather win games like this than to lose 4-3 in a captivating game.

Sneezer's picture
Maybe we CAN build on this. I hope. But I don't find this really minor win much to celebrate given what we've seen lately. ____________________________________________________________ Why don't we have a defensive coach? Insanity? Or arrogance?

Sneezer A team in a slump, and every team goes through one, will have difficulty beating any team. Are you going to tell me that you've been watching sports without having seen a team or an athlete go through a slump?

Sneezer's picture
Sure slumps happen. But let me ask you - is this a great team in a slump? Or a good team that's getting pushed around and having real trouble finding it's groove? To me it's the second one, and the team needs a significant change to be a cup contender. People have referred to the Wings losing 6 straight last year.... but that was with a lot of injuries to key players and they lost most games by 1 or 2 goals. This seems to me like a movie I've seen before, year after year, the last couple of years....over-performing Habs team falls apart under pressure. It's a problem that needs a solution. ____________________________________________________________ Why don't we have a defensive coach? Insanity? Or arrogance?

If you agree that slumps happen, then why aren't you prepared to give your team a break? Who is pushing them around? We out-hit the Flyers 27-17 the other night. Last year we were in the top 3 in hits. Your problem is remembering how bad this team was before Gainey took over and not realizing how far they've come in 5 years.
