The Blues had a chance to win it in overtime thanks to the acting ability of goalie Manny Lagace, who went down like he'd been harpooned with 22 seconds left in the third period when he was brushed by Canadiens captain Saku Koivu.
With Koivu in the penalty box into overtime, the Blues came close with a 4-on-3 advantage, then Habs' Tomas Plekanec charged away shorthanded to just miss on a partial break with defenceman Josh Gorges.
Price saw the Blues' Brad Boyes fire wide to begin the shootout, then stopped David Perron, buried in the pads, and Keith Tkachuk, with a brilliant left pad save. Koivu missed on his deke and Andrei Kostitsyn hit the post before Kovalev skated straight in on Lagace, head-shifted then deked to the goalie's left to score high.
The Canadiens, 9-4-2, arrived in St. Louis having lost 2-1 to Philadelphia the night before at the Bell Centre. The Blues, 6-8-1 at the opening faceoff, had just snapped a six-game losing streak and hardly were on fire.
Montreal's power play wasn't, going 0-for-10 tonight, including one 4-on-3 opportunity in overtime, to extend its futility streak to 0-for-20.
Canadiens defenceman Francis Bouillon left the ice in huge distress during overtime after being drilled from very close range in the throat, it appeared, by a shot. The injury was said not to be too serious.
