All-Star update: Crosby closing gap

posted by Dave Stubbs at 10h15 EST on Nov 17

At 9:15 am ET, Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby was trailing Canadiens' Alex Tanguay by 108,438 votes in all-star balloting to determine the starting lineups for the Jan. 25 contest in Montreal. Tanguay currently is ranked third, behind No. 1 Alex Kovalev and No. 2 Saku Koivu.

Defenceman Mike Komisarek maintains a nearly 137,000-vote lead on No. 3-ranked Mike Green; Andrei Markov leads Komisarek by almost exactly 20,000.

In goal, Carey Price is 169,400 votes clear of Pittsburgh's Marc-André Fleury.

Why bother voting? The NHL doesn't count votes for players they don't want to see in the game, and they fudge the totals of players they do want there. They've apparently taken tens of thousands of votes away from the 6 Habs already to try to make things closer. NHL - vote for whoever you want as often as you want* *- So long as whoever you want is the same guy that we want and doesn't play for a Canadian team. P.S. if you believe Crosby is truly closing the gap, I have a bridge to sell you.

If you think all of a sudden all these pens fans have started to vote your being jobbed. The NHL plays around with votes to their liking. I think the Rory Fitzpatrick idea was stupid but all of a sudden the nhl stepped in and took away votes . Now their doing it with Crosby. They have to market him after all. Canadas Team, Gods Team You name it The Habs are it

question - after i vote on the nhl.com page and i click on "see the leaders" i notice they don't tally up the votes in real time because i've voted 4 times just now and it still has the same data. i hope my votes are counting!

Who really cares about the All-Star Game? Other than the fact that it is in Montreal, the game is a joke... I'm still pissed Montreal, in their 100th, didn't get the New Year's Day outdoor classic vs. an original six opponent.

Umm...Because these celebrations will actually overlap and end at the beginning of next season. They've already announced that a game will be held at the Big-O next season either 1 game before or the 1st game after December 4th, 2009. So, don't panic it's still happening. It's just that they wanted that game closer to the actual date of their 100th year.

I agree. It would have made a lot of sense. I don't understand why they insist on only doing 1. Just another slap in the face to all the Canadian teams and Canadian fans from Bettman. It's all about the US and US fans don't really give a sh*t about watching the Habs & Leafs battle in an outdoor rink.

There once was this cat named Crosby Whose votes were closing in on Tangy. Look at this Sid. Who's he tryin' to kid? Wouldn't be nuthin' without Evgeni. ... You serious by saying Crosby would be nothing with out Evgeni?... You know they dont play on the same line that often because they are both Centers...

First off, "wouldn't be nuthin'" is a double negative, so you could argue it either way, but to answer your question, Gar: they're limericks. Supposed to be irreverent. OBVIOUSLY, Crosby doesn't need Geno. Once was a guy, name of Saku. A one-eyed jack and radioactive too. Finally gets a team With which he can ream But now the hole's got teeth to chew. I don't think Saku is one-eyed or radioactve either, Gary. Just being GROSSLY limerickal on but a wee stem of supposition. And here is why I have a hard time being too hard on people voting for an all-Hab starting line-up: note that Sergei Gonchar and Ryan Whitney, each of whom will be out until after the All-Star game following pre-season surgery, now have 44 and 36 thousand votes, respectively. So Penguins fans are clearly trying for a Crosby-Malkin-Whitney-Gonchar-Fleury starting line-up, but aren't as effective (so far) as the Habs fans have been.

A Letter From The Gainey Foundation A quick follow up here on the Habs Inside Out fan summit donation to the Gainey Foundation after last month's raffle. The amount donated to the fund from fans totalled $1,250.00 and today I received a thank you note on our behalf. Below, are the contents of the short note sent from Anna Gainey. Take a minute or two to visit the Gainey Foundation website and learn about all their endeavors. A big thanks once more to all the HIO summiteers who gave so generously of their time, their wallets, and of their collections to make this happen. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- On behalf of my family, I would like to extend our sincere thanks to the Habs inside - out group for their generous support of the Gainey Foundation. I received both the money order and cheque you sent by mail. I regret not being able to meet with you at Baton Rouge the night of your visit. I hope you all had an enjoyable time in Montreal. At least if he does pass Tanguay he will get a chance to realize what it's like playing for the Habs and fulfill a lifelong dream!! Who cares about Crosby though ... did anyone notice Dallas traded Boucher to Pittsburgh for Sydor? I had Boucher high on my wish list to take a top 4 spot on our D. Did Bob miss the boat on this one?

Chorske's picture
Boucher would make a decent addition- but is he top 4? And how do you fit anyone under the cap?

Habs are my Anti-Drug's picture
Boucher is only a few seasons removed from a 50+ point effort with a good +/- rating. So yes, I think he is definitely good enough for a top 4 role. The only concern comes with the injuries he's been having the last couple of seasons. But yeah, regardless, it's too late now. ----------------------------------------- In Saku we trust.

xaverian001's picture
I don't know ... maybe send Dandenault to Big D that would make enough room wouldn't it? I'm not sure Boucher is a top 4 guy anymore either, but his shot and his smarts certainly wouldn't hurt our power play. Too late now I suppose anyway.
