Paul Stastny: five years, $33 million

Gifted player, but that's another crazy second contract. Stastny's entry-level deal pays him $710,000 this year.

Do you envy Bob Gainey sitting down with the agent representing Mike Komisarek and Christopher Higgins?

• In the Delaware County Daily Times, Anthony Sanfilippo praises Paul Holmgren for another steal: Matt Carle

• Marc De Foy in the Journal de Montréal on the Canadiens'  power-play woes

• Thanks, nightmare_49, for this link to a skeptical look at Carey Price from Canes Country

• And ESPN's Scott Burnside asks:

Speaking of goalies, how do you feel about the Montreal goaltending situation?
Honestly, slightly uneasy. There is no disputing that sophomore Carey Price is a world talent. But over the past week or so, the Canadiens have proven with a series of erratic performances that they're not going to run away with the Eastern Conference. Moreover, the up-and-down play of Price -- whose goals allowed over the past four starts look like this: 2, 6, 0, 6 -- begs the question whether GM Bob Gainey isn't headed down the same path that cost the Canadiens a trip to the Eastern Conference final a year ago.
You'll recall that after trading Cristobal Huet to Washington at last year's trade deadline, Gainey turned over the goaltending duties to two untested rookies, Price and Jaroslav Halak. In the end, that move cost the Habs, as Price wobbled at the end of the first round against Boston and then collapsed in a five-game series loss to Philadelphia. Price is still putting up solid numbers (he's 8-3-1 with a .915 save percentage and 2.61 GAA), and the Habs are still near the top of the Eastern Conference standings.

But the bottom line is the Canadiens' goaltending lineup lacked a veteran presence this spring, and there's no reason to think it won't lack that same presence next spring. That's why we'd keep our eyes on guys like veteran netminder Dwayne Roloson, who might look in a Canadiens jersey, or Nikolai Khabibulin, or Manny Fernandez, although that's not going to happen given that the Bruins and Habs are division-mates. Still, food for thought, no?

Re: the Price article, it is right on in one respect, that is the apparent psychological need of many Habs fans to mythologize the goalie. It's not enough to cheer for the guy, or like him, some people need to put him on some kind of godly pedestal. Price is a great young goalie; he's not, however, a magical being with the ability to win a cup by himself, and I think that is the kind of hype the article in question was addressing. The hype is real and certainly very present on this site: witness the reaction anytime anyone even hints that his performance could have been better! Just to ward off that exact reaction, let me say again, Carey Price is a great young goalie! The thing is, it's ridiculous to focus so heavily on the goalie anyhow. A team doesn't need a "saviour" goalie to win the cup, or even just a great one. Lots of mediocre goalies have won cups, in fact. It's the team in front of him that matters most. Montreal has a really good goalie with the potential for greatness in Price; that's all they should really need.

Do you think BGL will play against Boston on Saturday? 09425

Probably and he will be totally useless and slow with a million excuses as to why he couldn't fight....

That Hurricane blog's "analysis" on Carey Price has to be one of the most blatant forms of anti-Habs propaganda I've ever read. Wow, I still can't believe that a guy would post THAT on the internet.

Maybe he should compare Price to his peers at his age. An outside perspective from a view who surely did not watch the Calder Cup playoff run. Here are his numbers compared to his peers at the age of 20. http://fantasysensearticles.blogspot.com/2008/10/carey-price-future-is-n...

Thanks. I like Price. Goalies don't usually win games. Goalies can lose games. A coach is supposed to know the difference and prevent the latter.

Too bad the fans love the guy, put in a goal the other day too... but the Cap only allows so many players and roster spots. Something Gainey should look into with carrying so many vet 4th liners. Having vets in the press box, even with cup expereince, doesn't make much sense.

And don't forget the special on Rose Coloured Glasses - for those 6-1 losses! ____________________________________________________________ Why don't we have a defensive coach? Insanity? Or arrogance?

Sneezer's picture
Agreed. If it's an over-paid veteran whose being a slacker, bash away. But Price is a talented kid who'se trying to find his game, going through normal learning curve. If you're a rookie (or sophmore) forward and you slump, no-one remembers as soon as you start scoring again. Goalies don't have that luxury. ____________________________________________________________ Why don't we have a defensive coach? Insanity? Or arrogance?

Since it's a slow news day, I'd like to take this opportunity to point out that Ryder has 3 goals in 18 games and is on pace for a WHOPPING 13 goals this year! (Hey sneezer - isn't that what he had LAST year?? Yeah - I think it was!) To those who thought Ryder was the 2nd Gretzky, the new Crosby, he'd come back to haunt us, yadda, let's just say that you were wrong, those of us encouraging a trade while he had (inflated) value were right. Thank you. ____________________________________________________________ Why don't we have a defensive coach? Insanity? Or arrogance?

10 points in 18 games, game winner last night and plus 7. Andrei Kostitsyn 6 points (2 goals) in 14 games. Pleks 10 points in 16 games and minus 1. I will always respect Ryder for his time here as I thought he was a hard worker and he kept his mouth shut when many others wouldn't have. If we are going to mock him for his 10 points and plus seven the day after he scores a game winner then it is only fair to look at our own guys as well. Don't get me wrong I don't think Pleks or Andrei's stats will stay where they are but I also don't think Ryder deserves any negative flack on here either. Harp on Samsonov.....that one is a whole other story. Ryder didn't cause any problems with anyone.

Sneezer's picture
Ryder's on a team that isn't slumping, and Pleks and Andrei aren't taking the same kind of payday. If he was here and had 3 goals in 18 people would be screaming bloody murder. And I wasn't "giving flack to Ryder". For some reason you it's verboten on here to say anything negative about the guy which I think is just stupid. He's a hockey player - he takes the good with the bad like the rest, and ALL I was doing is pointing out that he's NOT Gretzky or Crosby... which I guess is a real insult to some people but not those who see him realistically. THE POINT IS, there was a huge debate last year on whether he was a 30-goal guy for real or not. Trust me, if he had 8 goals now we'd be hearing about it. ____________________________________________________________ Why don't we have a defensive coach? Insanity? Or arrogance?

IF someone deserves it fine but 10 points in 18 games isn't that bad. Everyone went on and on about his plus/minus...well he is plus 7. I just don't know why people knock him...he was our leading goal scorer for a couple of years and should have left behind a good reputation for his time here. Gretzky or Crosby...well good point ...I guess. I am quite certain that noone in their right mind has compared him to those guys. He scored 30 2 years in a row (25 the year before) in Montreal that makes him for real.

Can't... he is set to be coaching an OHL team this year. Saw a headline in the paper over some guys shoulder at starbucks.

Sneezer's picture
Yeah, that's why I thought of him. Too bad we couldn't bottle that guy and stick it in the Habs water. My biggest disappointment this year is the team's lack of fight for goals. With BGL around to get their backs I thought I'd see more net crashing... uh, at the OTHER end I mean. ____________________________________________________________ Why don't we have a defensive coach? Insanity? Or arrogance?

probably not worth anything, but here's hoping it's true.

von's picture
Can't say I really agree with the assessment of Price. I mean let's face it, the games where he's given up 6 goals, the rest of the team hasn't even shown up. It's basically been a shooting gallery... Odd man rushes, brutal turnovers, sloppy defensive play and non-existent back-checking... Not too mention, a supposed "potent" offense who has been scoring 1-2 goals a game lately? I don't believe Price or Halak's play has been the concern so far this season. It's been the play from the goaltenders-out. Yet we were supposed to stick with Huet, a proven playoff choker? _________________________________ "Obviously it would be great, but they don't really hang conference titles in this rink. For those who think a trade will happen - who do you think is the best trade-bait on the team? What's the strategy? For me, I think we'll EITHER ship a forward and a D for a puck-moving D or veteran PP QB. To fill the forward spot, we'll bring up a Bulldog. And Dandenault will become team clown, probably juggle during intermission, or maybe hang out in the press box with the girls. OR pick up a gritty veteran forward. Roberts did good thing with the Pens - rumour has it he's available. How about Dandy and Breezer for Roberts. Yes, that would be AWESOME.. get rid of two softies for one tough leader. ____________________________________________________________ Why don't we have a defensive coach? Insanity? Or arrogance?

trade or just get id og laraque he is slow and useless and he CLAIMS nobody wants to fight him so he can't.... so hit the road we don't need him thi team does a better job looking after each other when he's out and the win....

I had this really weird dream last night. I was watching Kovy and his agent (I don't have any idea who the agent is...but my mind created one) tell Gainey that he won't perform until his contract is settled. Gainey countered that by saying he won't discuss a contract with Kovy now, and will definitely not discuss a contract until Koivu's is settled. Then the whole team started bullying Kovy telling him that he is being disrespectful, and that OF COURSE the captain goes first in contract talks. To all this Kovy basically said "f#$k it!" and stopped trying to play. Then I woke up and realized I am way too emotionally invested in the Habs :)

Will Longlade's picture
I had exactly the same weird dream. Only when the team starting bullying Kovy, he left the Bell Centre on his motorcycle in a muted rage, skidded into a snowbank on Crescent Street and had a near death experience. He awoke in an epiphany and went on to lead the Habs to their 25th cup.

Disclaimer: Every poster has a player that brings out the dark side in them, a player that they just can’t stand. For me, it’s Sergei Samsonov. The Habs welcomed him with open arms and a fat contract but he quit on them, just like he did with Chicago the following year. In Yashin like fashion, he rose like a phoenix in Carolina to play well enough to garner another long term contract, this time for three years. Then the ink dried on the contract and he was back to his old ways. I’ve decided to take the high road and not mention that he has not scored in 18 games despite getting ample playing time. In fact, he only has three assists and is minus 10 even though he gets to play with Staal and Brind’Amour. Regardless, I will not mention this fact and move on to tonight’s game. - Carolina unexpectedly won the Cup in 2006 but have missed the playoffs the past two years. Even in today’s NHL, that’s not easy to do. Playing in the soft Southeast division no longer guarantees a seeded playoff spot, especially in light of the fact that Washington is now a mover and a shaker. - Carolina is not noted for drafting well (Staal is an exception). This is a team that has basically been built by trades and free agent signings. - it’s always difficult to know if the glass is half full or half empty with Carolina. They kind of remind me of that rock group from the 60's, Question Mark(?) and the Mysterians. There are lots of mysterious question marks here. Pitkanen, Ruutu, Ward, Samsonov, and rookie Boychuk all have lots of ability but don’t always produce. 96 Tears to be sure. - same goes for injury prone guys like Eaves, Williams, Walker, Ruutu (again) and Kaberle. They have talent but half the time they can’t play. - Tuomo Ruutu is a guy to watch, tons of talent. Unfortunately, his name is synonymous with illegal, dirty hits so the Habs will have to be careful. - then there’s my favourite. You just have to love Eric Staal, would he ever look great in a Habs’ jersey - the centre we have always dreamed about. Size, skill, fluid skater, lots of grit and leadership. Did I mention that he’s only 24 years old? Franchise player. - centre ice is a Carolina strength and people like Brind’Amour, Cullen, and Sutter will certainly challenge Montreal tonight. They are also great at faceoffs. Pleks better be ready. - this team can score, but their defense isn’t stellar. Corvo was a good pickup but trading Jack Johnson was a major brain cramp. Gleason, who came the other way, isn’t too bad but has limited upside. Pitkanen is still an enigma (inconsistent and indifferent at times) but the Canes rolled the dice anyway and coughed up Erik Cole to get him. - Cam Ward is a good but not great goalie. He can be inconsistent and tends to run hot and cold. He needs to play like he did back in 06'. - Rod Brind’Amour is the consummate captain. Shades of Yzerman and Sakic in terms of his leadership style. Has really found his niche in Carolina after being screwed over in Philadelphia. Great on faceoffs and the PK. Staal and Sutter are learning from one of the best. It’s early in the year, but this game is kind of like a four pointer. Carolina won’t be able to back into the playoffs by winning their division so they are going to have to earn it the old fashioned way. Who knows, we might be in the same situation as well. Price gets the start. BTW, if Carolina wears their third jersey, you might want to pour yourself a stiff drink. Going For The Brass Ring - 25 Cups In 100 Years

Thanks for sharing your thoughts ... I really hope Carolina finds some way of getting their money back from Samsonov, or at least make his life a living hell until he shapes up. What a waste of space! I still can't believe Carolina traded Johnson. Brutal! Let's hope BG doesn't have any brain cramps like that with our prospects.

twocents's picture
ebk, I was just getting caught up and saw your post replying to my Lang comments this morning. Your logic is pretty much what I was thinking. Lang would never sign for what Gainey might be willing to spend on him. Even if BG did decide we could use him for another year. On the matter of Staal, would you be willing to give up Higgins and Pleks plus a prospect(not Pacs, McDonagh or even Maxwell) in a package to get him? Again this is only useless chatter.

ebk's picture
Don't ask such hard questions, Eric. Besides, I think we can get him for Dandenault, Begin and Chipchura . I'd like Carolina to toss in Samsanov just so I can see 24Cups head spin. Serioulsy, I don't think so but maybe you get get Carolina to toss on Corvo and Montreal could send one of the blue-chippers you mentioned and then I'd have to think long and hard about it. Doubt Carolina would, though I like useless chatter, hell I may be the king of it. Sorry Rob, my mistake, I got carried away, the title is still yours. :)

twocents's picture
Yeah, I highly doubt Carolina would entertain such ideas. Not to mention that the contract extension he signed might be fair by today standards, but could be pretty restrictive in a couple of years after the cap stops growing like mad.

Steve, I like the idea of you doing this before the games....but I still can't help but remember the first time I noticed you do it was before that horrible Bruin game. I enjoyed reading it but had a nasty feeling in my stomach when I first saw it lol !! I think Boone's Samsonov comments about the Samsonov wind up toy that buzzes around the perimeter when wound was maybe the funniest thing I have ever read on here.

24 Cups's picture
Rob - I just thought I would collect my thoughts on each team before we play them. (the golf course is closed down for the winter so I also have more time) I obviously won't repeat the previews when we play the teams the second time around. As for Boston, once I took a close look at their lineup, I fully realized how solid they were. Some people question who's side I'm really on, but if you're going to evaluate your enemy then you have to be honest, otherwise what's the point! As far as Samsonov goes, I'm on the high road now:-) Going For The Brass Ring - 25 Cups In 100 Years

The Bruins are extremely solid .....where their biggest question lies is betweent heir pipes. Thomas is playing fantastic but he has always run hot and cold. Fernandez is an interesting addition (now healthy)and is quite competent. They basically added an entire forward line with Wheeler, Bergeron and Ryder. Brad Stuart is a great addition for them as well. Kessel seems to be playing better,etc... They are for real. I don't think anyone who is a regular one here questions whose side you're on though. Some high road.......lol....I'm laughing now but I won't mention it.

ebk's picture
Some people question who's side I'm really on Tell them to stuff it. I like how you take the high road but still manage to kick Samsonov squarely in the junk, Well done!

Hear hear. 1. www.flickeringpictures.com - not a hockey site, but still kinda neat 2. Josh Gorges on Montreal's attack: "They're comin', they're comin' and they keep comin'. Just line after line, wave after wave..."

Higgins and Komisarek? Sure... why not? Hey, how much do you guys want? Chris? Lets see... scoring a goal every 3-4 months here and there that qualifies you for about 6 mil per. Komi? You block all the shots dude, but now opposition players simply skate around you like you're not even there. And on top of that a 20 yo whooped you butt in a fight. Even Markov can't make you look good anymore. So... I would say 7 mil year. Lock them both up for 20 years. Sheesh. This is one of those things again. These guys, especially, Higgins, can be good somewhere else, there is such risk, of course. But so what? If Higgins can't do jackshit for the Habs, what good is he? How long are we supposed to wait for him to become that power forward and score 30+ goals a year?

cautiousoptimist's picture
Wow, dude, anger much? Sure Komi hasn't been at his best, but he will be, and as it is he's 9th in the league in hits and 4th in blocked shots and a +3 to boot. And are you seriously blaming him for losing a fight? And Higgins has a solid 4 goals and 7 points in his 10 games this season. Where do you get this "goal every 3 or 4 months" stuff? You ask "How long are we supposed to wait for him to become that power forward and score 30+ goals a year?" You mean three more than he scored last year? At the moment, he's on pace for 30 exactly. You're obviously ticked here, but your anger at Higgins and Komi is misplaced, and in any case neither of these guys is going to make $7-million next year. 1. www.flickeringpictures.com - not a hockey site, but still kinda neat 2. Josh Gorges on Montreal's attack: "They're comin', they're comin' and they keep comin'. Just line after line, wave after wave..."

Sneezer's picture
Good points, however sarcastic. I have the feeling that Higgins will never be a star here but will blossom elsewhere... probably worth more in trade than he is to us. Komi, I think we've seen the best of - he's a solid player in many ways but people seem to speed past him. I wonder why he doesn't hit more as people enter the zone. I remember one game last year wondering this when the Habs had THREE hits all game, two by Komi. This is when I started to wonder what the hell the coaching team was telling them about hitting guys as they enter the zone... but that's a WHOLE other topic. How much could we get for Guy?? :) ____________________________________________________________ Why don't we have a defensive coach? Insanity? Or arrogance?

First off, Huet wouldn't have gotten us past Boston in teh playoffs had we kept him. No offense to Huet, love the guy, but he's not Cup material goaltending. Second, if things keep up with this powerplay... which i have a feeling it will... Sit OB, call up either Carle or WEber, because those kids have great shots. Pair tehm with Hammer and they're defence shouldn't suffer too much (no one gives him enough credit i don't think, the guy is ridiculous good. Note when he's out of the lineup WE ALWAYS LOSE! AND BY A LOT!) This way we can have our huge point slapshot, a new face on the team, a motivator for some players to do better (*cough* OB *cough*) and best of all, A DAMN PP GOAL! Go Habs!

I agree partially; bringing up Carle or Weber will give them a sniff of what the NHL real-season is like, but I would only do it while Komisarek is out. To limit the exposure either of these guys would bring, I would change the defence around like this: Markov-OB Hamer-new guy Georges-Cube I would sit Brisebois (who is playing fairly well), and go with OB; he needs to develop, and he won't if he's sitting in the Ryder/pressbox.

ebk's picture
I wasn't a huge fan of the Huet trade inthe first place but I agree with the decision to play Price down the stretch. Maybe Gainey figured Huet would be a distraction, so they moved him. I have no idea. I do think they would have been better served having Huet backing up Price in the play-offs. They win as a team and lose as a team but with decent goaltending, they beat the Flyers in the playoffs. On the flip side, though, without Price, I'm not sure they beat the Bruins. Stastny is the spitting image of his amazing father, the contract maybe a little to rich but this kid is the real deal. I see him play a lot against the Western Canadian teams and he's a beaut. Plekanec's point production may be close but Statsny but any GM that would trade Stasnty for Plekanec straight up would be laffed out of the league. This might lead people to realize signing Komisarek, Higgins and Plekanec won't be a cheap endeavor. Compare the salaries of similar players and you will see these three are going to command a bunch of $$. Not Hossa bucks, or Stastny bucks, but a lot of $$ just the same. I think Higgins will be the cheapest but it will still be a pretty big contract. Komisarek is the hard one to figure. Bone-crunching Dman with limited offensive ability, very, very good defensively. Plays big minutes, other teams avoid him and Markov like the plague with their top lines because usually Komisarek and Markov win that battle. He hasn't been this year but by the end of last year, he was Montreal's 2nd best Dman. I expect he will be again this year once he works out the kinks. It won't be for less than Jay McKee money, that's for sure.

I agree with you whole-heartedly...Stastny is absolutely a gem. He's a career point-per-game player, good on faceoffs and responsible in the defensive end. Heck, he has already eclipsed Saku Koviu's career year, and Alex Kovalev has only beaten Stastny's rookie point total twice in his career. If his appendix hadn't acted up last season, even Kovalev might be wishing he had a year like Stastny. Throw in the pedigree and you've got one fine hockey player that I would LOVE to see on the Habs. :)

Will Longlade's picture
I really like Robert L.'s idea of trying Kovy on the right point for part of the powerplay. By playing Markov on the right point, the Habs are taking space away from Kovalev (neutralizing him so to speak) and playing right into their opposition's strategy to key on the right side. Put AK46 on the right wing and Tanguay or SK74 on the left wing as the set-up men. I don't see the Habs trading for an experienced goalie unless it is part of a larger deal that addresses some of the team's key immediate needs. IMO goaltending isn't one of them, although I know there are many doubters.

Robert L's picture
The idea of it is not so much to allow Kovalev to be a trigger man a la Souray, but to enable him more options as a wheel man. I find that opposing PK setups have seen and countered all his tricks, and he's now played so tightly that it affects the entire unit. Carbonneau today stated that it was simply bad luck that the Canadiens aren't scoring more often, naming goalposts and such as a reason. No coach is dumb enough to analyze his own teams deficiecies in detail for the media, so Carbo's comments are nothing more than a dumbing down of the issue. Topham at "Lions In Winter" took my points and gave them a good stretching out, passing through his own thoughts and Carbonneau's take on it. Interesting talk (below) of trading Komi. Not that I think we should but we have so many guys with contracts ending this year, Gainey should trade SOMEBODY that he knows he'll probably lose. Otherwise it's a waste. We know the team is a little too strong on finess, not strong enough on grit. That by itself suggests some people. ____________________________________________________________ Why don't we have a defensive coach? Insanity? Or arrogance?

The Cat's picture
Im certainly not for trading Komisarek. He lost a fight to a very good fighter, theres no need to bail on him yet.

He showed up for the fight....which is more than Lucic did when BGL asked him to dance. Winning and Losing a fight doesn't matter...showing you are willing to fight does......end of story....everyone let this go. Komi has a rep for not dropping them ....he is valuable to us....he dropped them with a kid who quite frankly is an animal .....the only two guys on our club who could handle Lucic are Bouillon (maybe) and BGL. Komi earned a lot of respect in that fight to anyone who really understands the game. As long as Komi is willing to do it again ......that is all that really matters.

ebk's picture
no,no,no Rob, the Habs have to beat Lucic up in the first 5 minutes or all is lost, do you know nothing about hockey? LOL.

Earl - Interesting, but i'm not getting involved, i'm out of here.

Lol ...I know you are joking but he actually might have something coming to him...not for winning a fight.....that was fine so be it...but that showboating afterwards was something that may have gotten under the skins of our guys and of a leadership crew like we have at the helm. I know BGL was vocal about it too. Should be interesting....maybe Patrick will send his son out after Lucic lol.

ebk's picture
Yep, he kicked Komisarek's ass and I'm thinking he'll probably do it again if Komisarek wants to go one more time. Lucic is a beast. No one messed with him in the WHL and that's saying something. The Dub ain't no candy-assed university league. :) I don't think his kicking Komisarek's ass will have any lasting effect, it is an absolutely laughable suggestion, what will have a lasting effect, is after last year's play-off and the two games this year, Boston now knows it can compete with Montreal. I still think the Habs are better but that gap has closed considerably. All my braying above, it wouldn't surprise me if something happens early. One way or another, it's just not that important.

I don't know about Bouillon taking on Lucic. Maybe he could punch him in the b@lls! And Komi is awesome no question, and I wasn't saying trade him - my point was that to keep the team strong BG should be looking at the UFAs and deciding who he is probably letting go and seeing if he can make a swap that a) will keep the team strong and b) have better long term promise than a guy we're going to lose. Only Bob knows what that means. It just sucks losing good guys for no compensation. AND I think (some agree, some don't) that we need a small chemistry change.... too much finesse not enough fight. And I don't mean BGL fighting, I mean fighting for GOAL around the NET!!! ____________________________________________________________ Why don't we have a defensive coach? Insanity? Or arrogance?

Sneezer, there are a lot of poor attempts at comedy on this site but that wasn't one of them, might be the best line ever. Frankie the Bull would need a ladder just to reach Lucic's junk. As for trading anyone, any trade Gainey makes this year will have more of a short-term focus. They are in the hunt this year and Gainey knows it, despite the braying on this site.
