Alex Tanguay scored the freakiest-looking backhand goal you’re likely to see in the fourth round of the shootout tonight, giving the Canadiens a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over the lowly Ottawa Senators in Kanata.

Tanguay took the puck almost the whole way in from centre ice on his backhand on Ottawa goalie Alex Auld, then shovelled it through the five-hole to give the Canadiens the win.

Defenceman Andrei Markov also beat Auld in the shootout, on a backhand, while only Jason Spezza's bullet shot could solve Habs netminder Carey Price, who denied Daniel Alfredsson, Jarko Ruutu and Antoine Vermette. Alex Kovalev and Saku Koivu also missed their chances for the Canadiens in the shootout.

The bleeding of the Canadiens, now 11-5-2, seemed likely to continue unabated, the Habs falling behind Ottawa (6-9-4) by scores of 1-0 and 2-1 before clawing back with goals by Koivu and Markov, the latter tying the game with 4:24 remaining in regulation time.

The Habs now head home for Saturday’s game against Claude Julien’s Northeast Division-leading Boston Bruins on the night the team will retire the No. 33 of Hall of Fame goalie Patrick Roy.

I always say myself it is better to be lucky than good...however I think Saturday night we should return to good and go back to lucky in the play-offs or try both like Detroit. The free call we got on the goal last night might have drained the lucky tank.

I don't know if this has been mentioned before... But why wouldn't a call-up for Weber be on the cards? O'Byrne looks like a donkey out there... "I like women and I like cake " - HIO Summit 2008

I couldn't agree more, we also could use a forward call up. shake things up, and give some of the regulars a reason to play :)

I agree fully. I think Weber would be the way to go. I would also agree with bringing in a forward. Anything to light a fire under sergeis feet.

I have been thinking the same thing! There is to much job security on a team struggling like this one is. I agree that Carle or Weber should be brought in to light a fire under our D. If this happens, I think you will see O'byrnes learning curve all of a sudden reach its destination. ------------------- Individual records are nice to get, but before the season starts, you want to play to win the Stanley Cup! ~ Guy Lafleur

Some of you have heard of, and some of you remember ,a player named Frank Mahovlich. He was a multiple all star selection, scored well over 500 goals and even beat out Bobby Hull for the Calder. He played well for the Habs and helped win a suprise cup in 71.My buds and I used to call him FEEK/I have no idea why ,but I won my first $50 bet on that series. Very much like some of todays Habs he could be very, very frustrating to watch..Here's an oldy.. hey steve, how r ya. boys got the jerseys with price on the back. they wore them to school on monday with pride and honour despite the heckling they got from there LAFFS friends. hope all is well.

Rediculous.. Im sick of everyone blaming certain players for our misfortunes. This is not Kovalve's fault, or Koivu's fault. this is a team sport. and a team is required to win. and right now, we are not playing like an NHL team. Not to say that the montreal canadiens are not NHL calibur, but they are playing like a peewee hockey team. No one gives 100% unless they have the puck. The game is not only won in the offensive zone, there is a defensive aspect to the game. Aside from a few people (Georges,Komisarek.. a couple others) Everyone is playing too much with the puck and not playing the game of hockey. they are playing selfish. Now , something drastic has to be done because right now, by the looks of it, we wont even make the playoffs, let alone win the cup. Wether its a trade, or scratching certain players, We definatly need SOMETHING.

Yes these are all good points, but it still doesnt change the fact that we are struggling to score goals.. and relying on our goaltending to win us EVERY game.

Madness. I'm listening to madness. I tried irony earlier and that didn't work at all so I'll stick to the straight dope: Bench, trade, dump the Artiste? Madness. There is no one as spectacularly talented on the team as the Artiste. Nobody. Not on the best day of their lives. At ANY GIVEN MOMENT, the Artiste can break the game. Especially when he's happy. I'm not blind. I'm like y'all. I can see that he ain't happy, for whatever reasons, I don't know. But he still got a point last night! OPEN PASS, all the time in the world for Saku to come in OFF THE SIDE. The side! Now imagine tomorrow, when the Artise can be playing happy again. Gimme a team-carrying prima donna ANYTIME over a young plumber and a second-round draft choice, c'mon! What will it take to make the Artiste happy is the question, not, why is he not performing. He wants croissants in the morning? Fine. He wants a shiatzu after every game? Fine. He wants to pilot the plane back? Errr...fine. (gulp) I don't care what the problem is when he's not happy. I only know what he can do when he is. Making it worse by talking trade, bench or dump is absolute madness. Peace Out ______________________________________________________ Lord Bugs Potter, esq. Yes, it's obvious the Artiste is not the same as last year. A nice ? years contract might put his mind to rest and have him focus more on the game. Whos knows, may be negociations are underway and not going well or may be he was expecting this contract signed prior to Oct 10th. Bob knows however, they had their walk in the park already.

20-21 shots respectively. Not exactly a battle of the titans. Single digit shots for the first 2 periods and about 3/4 of the third when the Habs felt the heat and turned it up a notch. Ottawa hasn't exactly been known for their defensive play this season. Figured if the Habs had shown up to play, and wanted the win, they would have bombed Alex Auld with shots. Its looking more and more like Markov is our most talented goal scorer. Maybe Carbo should give him a shot at playing on Kovalev or Koivu's wing. Might return some good results. I'm hoping the REAL Montreal Canadiens show up to play on Saturday. Show the Bruins where they belong.

sidhu's picture
Apparently 12 scouts were at last night's Sens-Habs game. Here's my completely random speculation (because this is better than work): To Washington: Dustin Bfyuglien and Colin Fraser (net savings of $1.375m) To Chicago: Michael Nylander, Christopher Higgins, Ryan O'Byrne, and Kyle Chipchura (net gain of $.025m - not counting Chipper, who would end up in their farm system) To Montreal: Andrew Ladd and Cam Barker (net gain of $1.35m - we then cut Dandy and call up a player from Hamilton which should even things out) That yields, for Montreal: Lats-Koivu-Tang AK46-Pleks-Kovy Ladd-Lang-SK46 Begin-Max-BGL/Kosto/Hamilton player Markov-Komo Barker-Gorges Hammer-Cube Breezer

Why would you cut Dandy when he his better than Breezer and we no NHL ready defense in Hamilton. Madness.

Habsrule1's picture
Dandy's better than Breezer on D? Considering he has not played there much in a long time, I respectfully disagree. Not to mention Breezer has had MANY more good than bad shifts. Habsrule1's picture
I was at the game last night. This is my analysis, for what it's worth (probably not much). The first period was very intense. A lot of 1on1 battles on the boards which seemed to come out fairly even. I personally found that the Habs could have had 5-10 more shots on net if not for the fact that they tried one too many passes, or one too many fancy plays. Auld looked shaky from the start somehow, and I repeated to my buddy a couple times that the Habs just had to shoot more. When they did take shots finally, Auld gave up some very juicy rebounds. When Markov finally scored with less than 5 minutes left, we had only 17 shots on net. Another 5-10 as mentioned above, and I'm convinced we could have been up 4-2. As for individuals, Begin stood out most to me for his intensity and tenacity. Besides him, I though Lats played with confidence and worked hard. Of course Koivu was his regular self, and Price kept them in the game with 2 or 3 big saves. I commented in the second period that this just looked like 2 bad teams playing each other, but that may have been because the sens were extremely satisfied with the way things were going, and were desperately trying to shut things down. In the third, the Habs were coming on strong, and in the last 5 minutes, they were dominating. I'm convinced if they had not taken a penalty at the end of regulation, the momentum would have carried them to a win in the first minute or two of OT. I think the message has been sent. It's time to switch SK74 and TK. Not a huge game, but perhaps an important one. We'll see tomorrow. "I can't hear what Jeremy(Roenick) is saying because my Stanley Cup rings are in my ears" - Patrick Roy Go Habs Go!! Habsrule

being at the game as well, i agree 100% with the above. 2 teams, playing very defensively, afraid to make any mistakes. one thing that didnt help the shot total is the amout of times, we'd miss the net or again, the fancy cross ice pass, just wasnt working for them. lots of hard workers out there, lat's looked good, begin, saku, tanguay. so i noticed today there isnt any brisebois bashing either??? i think he played very well, all our defense and of course price, did a great job limiting the shots. we did get the 2 points but most importantly, we build up a bit of momentum for saturday which will be much needed. if we play the way we did last night against boston, we're gonna be eaten alive !

HabsColor's picture
Bench Kovalev. Send Lats and OB to hockey school (if there was any). THEY HURT THE TEAM!

Habitant in Surrey's picture
Hopefully sign Sundin; trade Kovy to Florida for Bouwmeester..... or, if Florida wants a little more, add Dandeneault (though, if by stroke of luck we reach deep in the playoffs as a result, I would feel guilty depriving Dandy of the opportunity he obviously wanted to be a part of the Habs drive for 25)

No. Trade Kovalev, maybe; right now he's not helping the team any. Lats didn't hurt the team at all last night. OB needs to stop taking crazy, stupid penalties.

craz11's picture
Kovalev is at the liberty of his struggling linemates. Teams no longer concern themselves with his linemates and direct all of the focus on Kovalev, and he is double-teamed all of the time. This results in the following: Kovalev stickhandles around 2 or 3 guys to buy time and open up space for his linemates. His linemates respond by skating themselves into coverage. As there is only so much twirling and spinning a man can do before he gets dizzy and tired, Kovalev ends up trying to force a play to his covered linemates, which usually results in a turnover. If you recall, Kovalev has set up DEFENCEMEN on numerous occasions earlier in the year, as they would pick up on the fact that Kovy's linemates are just putting themselves into coverage, and instead pinch in and go to the EMPTY space for a scoring chance. Hammer has scored at least twice like this. Kovy's linemates need to move around more in the offensive zone. They're getting into the habit of being mesmerized by AK27s stickhandling and turning themselves into spectators. You'd be crazy to trade Kovalev. Just get Pleks and Kostitsyn to wake the F up.

HabsColor's picture
Team990's Tony was just speaking... Lats and OB hurt. Great minds the same. Thanks, Tony. These two guys are hardworkers, but their levels seem not yet NHL.

How is that "great minds the same"? You said send them to the minors, which is not the right move in Lats' case...not sure about OB...and they are injured? Sending to the minors and being injured is the same? "I can't hear what Jeremy(Roenick) is saying because my Stanley Cup rings are in my ears" - Patrick Roy Go Habs Go!! Habsrule

HabsColor's picture
I just mentioned these two guys are less of NHL sense. For solutions? to be honest, I have no idea.

HabsColor's picture
Trade him, I won't disagree. With his salary there are bunch of good players available in the league. SK74 can replace his position right away. Trade Kovalev for a first class D-man. Would be a good deal.

Corio's picture
Regarding Kovalev. I couldn't believe the tripping penalty he received after he was doodling with the puck and lost it to a poke check and because of that he tripped the player who took it from him out of frustration. Not only did that create a dangerous turnover but Ottawa actually scored on the play but the goal was disallowed, not sure why, I think maybe a Montreal player touched the puck on the delayed penalty before it went in the net. The point is that Kovalev should be benched for crap like that that was a ridiculous penalty to take. He should slap himself upside the head for those and not take it out on the player that easily stripped him of the puck. Man was I pissed when I saw that! He should know better. I find he does that a lot too.. Very unsportsmanlike, especially for a veteran of his stature. “He knows, like, unnecessary facts about putting Sears catalogs on your shin pads.” Sean Avery on Don Cherry

_koopy_'s picture
are you serious? first of all, the player he "tripped" dove...watch the replay. and secondly, if he hadn't gotten the penalty, we probably would have lost the game. so why are u complaining?

Corio's picture
Yes I am serious, and whether he dove or not is irrelevant you can clearly see the intent to trip fueled simply by frustration at losing the puck. Kovy has a history of doing this so it's not the first time, far from it. A guy like Kovy should be more level headed especially when they are struggling as they are. So based on what your opinion he should continue acting like a under disciplined child and get dumb penalties so we can win games? lol@u “He knows, like, unnecessary facts about putting Sears catalogs on your shin pads.” Sean Avery on Don Cherry

Fansincebirth's picture
I didn't see much of the game last night (crappy circumstances) but I saw the Kovy trip on the replays and Ruutu went down (dive) very very easily. That being said, Kovy did take a swipe at him and it almost cost us. I think he needs a time out......

You guys remember during the playoffs when Kovalev was captain replacing Koivu? He gets checked, and just slashes the player, which ended with a power play for Boston. That's the one thing about him that really bothers me. Getting useless penalties.

Yesterday's Game.... I was amazed at the energy that both teams brought to the ice. But... For a moment in the 3rd period after the sens scored to make it 2-1, I felt that les boys started to break down like they so often do... They did manage to break out of that train of thought with markov taking that monsterous shot from the point. (I've said it before, If markov just spent the whole game doing that same routine, we'd all be saying Streit who? The Sens were a worthy opponent with a similar style with just as much to prove as we do, but breaking down is not an option with a team like boston, cause they'll eat us alive. In any case, it was nice to get the *W* yesterday, I hope we can honour St.Pat with the same *W* on Saturday November 33rd. I love HIO!

Something is wrong with Kovy. I don't know if he is back to his antics of 2 years ago, but something is just not right... Last night he played one shift which was right after Ottawa scored the goal.. That changed the momentum for a few minutes, but then he was making the same mistakes over and over again... In his defense, teams are checking him more now... But that shouldn't be an excuse. Jacques Demers said it best. When Kovy plays well the team follows... When he doesn't the team follows.. How has the team played??? Like kovy.. Passive, making soft passes that go nowhere, and making the little mistakes that can cost you a game in the long run. The one positive is that he is ok on the PK. Him and Koivu are one of the best on our team to kill penalties.. Anyways. These were my 2 cents.. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Koivu for Prime Minister...

Derick Brassard, Columbus Blue Jackets - 205 points After spending most of last season with Syracuse of the American League, the sixth overall pick in 2006 is leading all rooks with 19 points in 18 games. The 21-year-old center garnered 14 of 25 first place votes. 2. Drew Doughty, Los Angeles Kings - 161 points The Kings are flush with talented young blueliners, but Doughty is the ace. I think saturdays game with Boston will be a good hard game. I also think Carbo should change Kovys batteries to engerizer batteries, because it seems that he is so slow coming out of is own end, that the other team is able to get back to their own end before he gets there.
