Surprise! Sun rises for O'Byrne

Ryan O'Byrne
Tomorrow is another day.

The world didn't end for Canadiens defenceman Ryan O'Byrne, whose own-goal Monday sent the Habs into overtime and a shootout against the New York Islanders, a game Montreal ultimately lost 4-3.

O'Byrne wasn't talking this morning after a quick practice before the Canadiens flew to Detroit for Wednesday's game against the Red Wings. But he had the support of his teammates and his coach, Guy Carbonneau, who all agreed that these things happen and you move on.

Carey Price will be in goal against Detroit, and Jaro Halak is expected to see action either Friday in Washington or back home Saturday vs. Buffalo.

Guillaume Latendresse practised today and will be re-evaluated tomorrow to see whether his shoulder is good to go against the Wings. Georges Laraque won't make the trip, having experienced a "setback," in Guy Carbonneau's word, with a balky groin. He'll remain in Montreal for treatment.

Sorry twocents, you're right it was HabFab. Apologies. http://moeymusings.blogspot.com/

Yes,sorry "twocents" and also Moey .Was actually teasing Yeats re comments from last week in regardings to the BUI .I don't think he got it either. However Moeyyyy ,I'm not so sure now girl!!!

I'm not so sure after tonight's game!!!! Might need a nightcap!! http://moeymusings.blogspot.com/

No worries Moey, what with everyone testy around here these days, I thought I should keep things straight.

The funniest thing about all of this is how short people's memories are. It wouldn't be hard to go back through the first couple years of both Komi or Markov's careers and see the hundreds of times they gave up the puck, sacrificed their position to try and make a big hit or play, etc. etc. These guys made the same mistakes (own goal notwithstanding) as RO... yet does anyone speak about them? Didn't think so... O'Byrne is still a youngster that has been asked to play double the icetime he can handle... but that's only a matter of circumstance. Once Komi is back he'll get bumped back to a 5-6 position and everyone will be happy. O'Byrne will be a force on this team in the not to distant future. Gainey and Carbo realize this, otherwise he wouldn't be given his current responsibilties or on the team for that matter.

Kovalev + 1 Hamdog = Bouwmeester + Sundin (if we can sign him) Dump Lang + Weber (at least to try if can replace Streit) + Chipchura + Stewart + D'agostino to add Canadian backbone & energy The Kostystsins, Higgins and Plekanic will bloom without Kovalev In sum, just need one large skilled center and one dominating offensive/defensive D and we have everything else presently on the team and in Hamilton at least to make the final round. If can sign Sundin but can not get a Bouwmeester-type, Kovy will do well with Sundin. We are ok with Kovy as long as he is not our top forward we depend on.

smiler2729's picture
Yeah, I like Bouwmeester too but I don't see Kovalev as the main problem on this team. Yannick Weber's a no-brainer, bring him up and sit Brisebois.

Habboss's picture
For a guy like Obi 6'6 240lbs, he sure Is a wimpy, slow, lousy decision making D. The mistake this guy made Is absolutely unprofessional, I could see that maybe happening In junior, but never at this level. I will be surprised If this guy makes It past FEB.

Hey dude, remember Steve Smith, 1986 playoffs, Calgary vs Edmonton..... Smith had a great 15 year career in the NHL.

And without surprise he got a job with the Flames organization once his career was done, it coincided with that goof! http://www.sportlots.com/auction/aucbin/selleritems.tpl?seller=BACKDOOR

This team Is In need of Dmen. You have to start a team from the goalie out, the habs need D. 3, 71, 51, and maybe 44 are not good enough against the powerhouses of the N.H.L. The Habs O Is good but definitely not great, I believe they played above they're heads last year, especially 27. This team can go either way, but I think because of Price, they have a great chance to Improve.

There are rumblings that M. Schneider wants out of Atlanta, don't blame him. This guy was always a great PP specialist and he shoots LEFT! I have not seen him play too much lately. Does anyone think he could help the Habs?

Number31's picture
Last I heard about him he was injured...

showey47's picture
schneider is playing tonight against the leafs, he has a goal i believe. Thrashers beat laffs 6-3, and as usual their homer broadcasters say they were the better team because they got more shots then the thrashers did.

all kidding a side the only problem the Hab's have is coaching -- he doesnt make good decisions( think about the last B's gam ewith Laraque was not good it wasnt going to happen) -- watch the next 3-4 games and watch what he does he is not doing you any favors

It's a slump. And though I agree that Carbonneau makes his fair share of mistakes I don't think he is entirely to blame for the teams problems. Boston destroying us was really a wake up call as our defence was awful around that time. Since then our defence has gotten significantly better (apart from Carolina game). Our offence has been piss poor, and I blame a lot of that on line juggling but also for the fact that the lines weren't working to begin with. Last night it looked a lot more promising, especially the Kovalev line. Even though they didn't score, they were passing the puck around better and getting chances. Also you have to consider that the game should have been 4-3 with Kostitsyn's goal. The problem I've seen lately for the most part is a lack of execution and you can't realistically blame that on Carbonneau. I don't think there's a coaching strategy that he can implement that will get player's sticks to hit pucks more efficiently. I think if we're patient the team will start to come around. It's kind of premature to start demanding a trade for Kovalev considering what he did for us last year and the fact that and the potential for him to be a game breaker. He started off the season strong, just like the team did and to put the sole blame on him when none of our lines are producing is kind of ridiculous.

jw Lucic was invisible for the most part, except for that perfect feed from Kessel that anyone could have scored. It wasn't Thornton like you originally stated. The Habs outshot Boston 35-27 and outhit them 49-23. There's a reason why Thomas was the 1st star. It's a long season and way too early to gloat and taunt. Let's see what happens at the finish line. Btw, what are the numbers after the initials for?

Xtrahabsfan's picture
Hey jw,did you ever hear the story of the Habs AND the Bruins? THE Habs asked the Bruins if they ever had problems with shit sticking to Lucic ,the Bruins replied yes and then the Rock wiped his as with Lucic,lol..

wont happpen bro...why would boston trade 5 minutes of Lucic for for minutes with a goon

re-read what I posted Kessel for Thorton NOT Kessel to Thorton. Thorton went on the ice with Lucic and Carbs pulled Laraque off and after the face off Julian pulled Thorton off and put Kessel on and yes Lucic scored not Thorton

jw Badly written. Ever heard of commas and periods? The point is that Lucic was invisible when Laraque was on the ice and the goal was scored when Kovalev was on, so the strategy worked. You still didn't address my other points about being outshot and outhit. What's with the numbers?

out shot and out hit -- well you said lucic was not effective during the game . he lead the game in hits I guess at the end of the night it is who scored the most? and if the answer is the B's, was lucic part of that? answer Yes so how effective was their tatic if at the end of the night Lucic is part of the scoring and the Habs loose? Had they not imployed those tatics the whole game ( message was sent to the the Bruins and they responded by not allowing Lucic to fight & in the end I guess the Bruins win because they got the 2 points -- maybe if the first line was together all night they may have been able to score but again Carbs was screwing with the lines and even your comrads agree -- to much line juggling Feel free to imploy the same tatics next time we play and the outcome will be the same

t1tan5's picture
I actually think Laracque shadowing Lucic worked. The only time he didn't Lucic scored. Also, BGL showed some ability behind the net. He and Koivu along with Tanguay created chances.

Habs Fan in Hogtown's picture
I agree. I liked that line in a kinda playoff way. This game was actually the first time Laracque actually played a good game. Was probably the most minutes he's done as well. Too bad he's injured again.

you think it worked Lucic out hit everyone and he even hit Laraque and Laraque didnt go near him until the next faceoff. but at the end of the day the B's win and tha tmeans Carbs has got to contain more than Lucic

Obviously you did not even watch the game if you think Lucic outhit everyone. He was too busy playing scared running away fromm the Rock. Not everything you say is unreasonable though, in fact you have made some interesting points with some colourful metaphors. Lucic is a machine, someone every team would enjoy to have playing on their side. However, don't go awarding any Stanley Cups to the Teddy Bears just yet as this may be a 1-year wonder team. Boston is destined to break your heart and I can tell with your posts getting bolder and bolder that you are worried. :-) It's just a game -Go Habs Go

Hey Bro you are correct and you are right it could be a one yr wonder ( kinda like the Habs last year and yes they broke your hearts) I do love the series and I gotta tell you -- no better franchise to watch at their home arena than Montreal Look a tthe stats from tha tgame he had more hits than anyone -- but in the end the points mean more than th ehits

jw Your team was outhit 49-23.

that fine it happens but instead of running around trying to out hit the Bruins maybe you should go back to the successful coaches Montreal has had and understand tha tin the end Scoring is more important than Hitting. The Bruins are not afraid of being hit or going toe to toe ( yes Lucic was told he could not fight - by far that would have been worse trading Lucic for Laraque - good for you -- though the fight itself Laraque would win but Lucic would get his fair share)

The Bruins won, in a shootout. That doesn't mean anything at all.

Okay folks, how about a little hockey talk. A question: if you were GM, and the Habs were to trade two roster guys for 1 missing puzzle piece. - Who would you let go (2) - What piece would you most want back (D, or Center, or Sniper) - Who would you call-up to fill the extra space? -------------------------- ~Listen to the smart dog!

twocents's picture
-Kovy and Dandy for Mathais Ohlund -sign Sundin

showey47's picture
lats and higgins plus prospects/pick for kovalchuk, exelby and a second rd pick. Ilya is a very frustrated player in atlanta and i highly doubt he is going to resign there after next season, i wouldn't be surprised if he is dealt before the end of this season. Having another year remaining on his contract will draw a bigger return on a trade

Habboss's picture
We need d. not O. Badly.

SmartDog's picture
Kovalchuk would be awesome and I think you're on the riht track. As someone else said, we don't need any more 'spare parts'. We've got lots of those. We'd be smart to trade 3 guys for 1 if it was someone like him. We're lucky to have a good pipeline - certainly something Bob et al have done well, and if we don't use it we'll lose it. ~Listen to the smart dog!

showey47's picture
we have a boat load of prospects, they all can't play for us. We can also trade the rights of players were have in russia like yemelin, valentenko and perezogin. I think both yemelin and valentenko would come over knowing they both have a spot in the nhl instead of in the minors.

likehoy's picture
great call on kovalchuk! right handed shot on the point in PP...and a damn good one! we'd have to rid ourselves of kovalev to shed cap space.

Chorske's picture
Do Not Trade: Koivu (heart and soul, may he retire a hab), Price, Komo, Gorges, Markov, Pleks, both Kostitsyns, Tanguay, Hamrlik. I like Lang, Kostopoulos, Begin because they exemplify the work ethic we need. Tradeable assets: Everyone else, starting with Halak... and as much as I hate to say it, I'm sick of talking about how "mercurial" Kovalev is, so I'd strongly consider letting him go. Dandenault. Lats. Laraque. etc Biggest needs: faceoff wins, grit up front, a severe aversion to losing, at any position, although I'd prioritize going for a center. Possibles: Sundin Among the impending UFAs: Johan Franzen: cheap, big, scoring touch, can play C Horcoff: big, consistent 50 pointer, can play C BUT I really don't see any hugely unfixable problems on this team, except for our famous weakness between the ears. I wouldn't go after spare parts, as we are loaded with those. But I would move any number of the tradeables to land a Sundin.

SmartDog's picture
I agree. Hate to say it but I might keep Lats.... in a pinch I'd let him go, but I think he has a future. I noticed you didn't protect Higgins either, he'd probably be good trade bait, has a future but don't know if it's in Montreal. I'd keep the Cube too. I like the Cube, small man, can turn on a dime, hard to deke around. ~Listen to the smart dog!

Coach Carbonneau & Laraque Add - Lucic YOu need heart and desire you have none on this current team Laraque cannot play today's game your fighter has to be a thorton who can produce Carbonneau blew the B's game the other night sending Laraque after Lucic all night - he had to have seen Lucic turn to the bench on the first shift it ( it happened right in front of the Habs bench) and Julian told him no Then they put thorton out and Laraque didnt engage him ( thats the only Bruin that was going to go with him) to trade Lucic for Laraque would be dumb on the B's part and Julian had to be laughing when Laraque goes out with the first line and stays out there to follow Lucic -- Lucic still had more hits than anyone else in the game Just a thought from the outside looking in --- your Favorite Bruins fan!

Exit716's picture
So two wins in a season and that's your Stanley Cup? Man you guys have no standards. When is floppy the baby seal coming back to his usual sucky self? It has to be pretty soon. Once that happens the Bruins will be battling the Leafs and Senators for 10th place. There's a reason Julien has been fired twice by organizations that are far better than your third rate excuse of a franchise.

brother 2 wins oh sorry the only games that matter are boston and Montreal...take a look a the standings...the way the habs are playing they will be out of the playoffs before Tampa Bay -- get out of your fish bowl Brother!

So what, the team is in a slump, but our record is still not bad and we're still 5th in the East.

Missing Piece: Mats Sundin Who would I let go? After Koivu, any two to free up the necessary cap space. I'd call up a d-man from Hamilton who can shoot, i.e. Weber.

Moey's picture
Correct me if I have any of this wrong, so far this season, in your opinion, Price sucks, Koivu sucks, Kovalev sucks, Breezer is not fit to be in a Habs uniform, get rid of O'Byrne, Carbo can't coach, Timmins is incompetent, he can't rate the players in Hamilton (but you know better) Gainey sucks because he signed Lang and he signed Breezer. For the life of me and I mean this seriously, WHY ARE YOU A HABS FAN. If we do get lucky enough to hoist it one day, you have no business being within 100 miles of it. http://moeymusings.blogspot.com/

Let's go through it in detail Einstein: Price has actually played really well, especially recently. I haven't ragged on him in a while. I have said virtually nothing about Koivu this year and have not criticized him at all, in contrast to last year. What did I say about Kovalev? He is one of the most frustrating players I have ever encountered, but he has more natural talent in a lock of his hair than 90% of the guys in the League. Said little about O'Byrne, most of which defended him (see today). Very rarely, if ever, criticized the coach for what goes on on the ice. Never, ever said one single word about Trevor Timmons. True, I thought Lang was a poor man's effort, after failing to sign Mats. The Breezer just should be retired, end of story! Please, stop drinking! You are really embarassing those of us who take it seriously. You really should pay more attention to your "boy" friend than to me. I was in the first row of whites the last time you "hoisted" it you dumbass. Were you there? Except for the Habs, Montreal must be a very pathetic place to live. You couldn't support a MLB franchise, no basketball and your "football" team sucks. Crap, the Habs' beat reporter even went to Regis High School in Manhattan. Not too far from my HS All Hallows in the Bronx -- the oldest Irish Christian Brothers' school in North America. You wonder why reasonable people hate this team. You are the poster chick for it.

Are you two BUI-ing again??

Be specific Frank, she's a dope!

Forgive me my friend, but what in my response would be evidence of that?

No mellow there ,see TonyD's link below.

Thanks Tony, I love that tune.

Let's play triva Who is the only current NHL player who has scored one big goal and his stats are currently 0 goals, 3 assists......BINGO You are correct Ryan O'Byrne!!!!

What GM has paid $4 million to a three goal scorer on pace for 12? Is it your Haavaaad educated GM?

its easy to over look that when your team is winning --- everyone has a player who is not proforming up to their pay -- just close your eyes and point to any playe ron the Habs roster! even your 3rd grade Verdon education would tell you not to throw stones when you live in a glass house!

Who's ron and when did we sign him?

DD's picture
....and always remember the smartest hockey man ever to live is from your neck of the woods, Mike "Practically A Genius" Milbury. If you don't believe me, just ask him. BTW Do you think it might have something to do with the water you guys are drinking?

twocents's picture
OK, I have one... which new poster on HI/O actually roots for a team that has not won anything in 36 years, which was preceded by a 29 year drought?

two cents I posted this I thought you should read it OK Boys! I knew you would all attack me -- but lets just make this simple -- this is about what you have done in the past this is about today! your current Habs have one nothing and will win nothing as long as you have the whine bag behind the bench..by the way thank you for firing Julian ( what bone head made that decision). If I lived in the past like some of you I would come back with When was the last time you won a Superbowl, NBA Championship or World Series! FYI - I very much enjoy coming to montreal no better city in north America

twocents's picture
Oh I saw it jw. Where do you live then? It seems to me the Brooins haven't won anything in the recent past either. Lets see... in the most recent past our team beat yours in a best of 7 series. Please come up with fresh material instead of reposting past nonsense. Come on, live in the present, not 30 minutes ago.

yea beat us in a 7 game series up 3-1 1st place team against 8th Let's face it Montreal didnt riot becaues they won you were pissed because you couldnt rice of us faster oohhh and by the way how did oyu make out in the next series against philly? Again forget the poast brother the current hads have won nothing and will win nothing as long as Guy is behind the bench

I'd like to forget the poast but I don't know what it is. And I don't know how Oyu made out in the Philly playoffs, I've never heard of that dude. The hads didn't win anything but the Habs did win the Eastern Conference last year when everyone predicted they would be 13th.

twocents's picture
How did you guys do in the next round? Oh... never mind. See you in April jw. That's when it matters friend, but you folks in beantown probably forgot that a long time ago.

Uh, we're talking about hockey here. And just like the current Habs have won nothing, the Bruins didn't either.

jw You never get your facts straight on anything, do you? You got Julien because New Jersey fired him, not us. Your first 2 posts on here were also wrong. Admit it! You only come to Montreal to drink a man's beer for a change.

Yes we did get him from NJ but for him to get there you FIRED HIM! NJ has a reason ever been there its the cess pool of North America they did him a favor

DD's picture
Oh I thought Boston was the cesspool. Jeez, it's funny how they all look the same, from our crisp, clean vantage point.

t1tan5's picture
I actually like Boston; it's a nice city. But oh GOD do I ever hate their sports teams.

good one bro good come back! go back outside and flip another police car over after a first round win!

DD's picture
The cops won't even go near your $#ithole of an arena at night. Can you spell GHETTO?

ohh but when the cops show up in montreal you just flip the cars over you the man

DD's picture
Wow, it seems like you guys have a riot everytime you get near a championship, but this wouldn't include the bruins, because the last time you had a sniff, video cameras didn't even exist.
