Habs audio: "Old man, Sergei and Gui sit..."

Neil Young reacts upon hearing that the Maple Leafs had scored last night in Los Angeles. Just kidding. He's in full flight during his Bell Centre concert.
Marie-France Coallier, Gazette

A shuffle in the Canadiens lineup at the Bell Centre announced this morning, as the strains of last night's marvellous Neil Young concert still rung through the rafters of the arena:

Forwards Sergei Kostitsyn and Guillaume Latendresse are in the press box tonight for the game against the Atlanta Thrashers. Alex Tanguay (neck) and Georges Laraque (groin) are back in, having missed a respective two and four games, while defenceman Ryan O'Byrne sits for his second straight, keeping Mathieu Dandenault on the blue line.

Head coach Guy Carbonneau would much, much rather talk about the guys who are in than those who are out. You'll hear that in his words and in his tone of voice.

Little chance we'd be talking to either Kostitsyn or Latendresse; the dressing room was closed to the media before they appeared after the morning skate.

Lines for tonight, with injured defenceman Mike Komisarek a game-time decision re: his return behind the bench as an assistant coach:

Andrei Kostitsyn-Saku Koivu-Matt D'Agostini
Christopher Higgins-Robert Lang-Alex Kovalev
Alex Tanguay-Tomas Plekanec-Tom Kostopoulos
Steve Bégin-Maxim Lapierre-Georges Laraque

Here's some pregame audio following the Canadiens' morning skate:

• Carbo English   • Carbo French   • Koivu   • D'Agostini

Well, the coach's decisions are a coach's decicions but damn, all week I've been saying that I was confident that Sergei would score a birthday goal for me tonight. Why must he sit TONIGHT!? :( Girlyness aside, he hasn't sat in the box since he's played for the Habs. Maybe he can gain some perspective from up above, because he is so much better than the way he has been playing. Some say I have too much confidence in him, but it is what it is. He'll pick himself up again, I don't doubt it for a second. GO HABS!

Happy Birthday good looking. Andree and I missed seeing you at the summit this year. Have a great evening Dana.

Woah_Dana's picture
Thanks Ian! I missed you guys, too. Hopefully we can connect soon! It would be great. :) GO HABS!

How about if Sergei could mind-control his brother to score tonight? Then Sergei could mind-telling a wonderful birthday to you and drive pass your house in his Porsche... ---------- "We all wore the same costume as Maurice Richard did; the red-white-and-blue costume of the Montréal Canadiens, the best hockey team in the world." - Roch Carrier

That works, too. Haha. GO HABS!

Well well, Andrei scored the winning goal tonight. Impressive mind-control of Dr. Sergei, eh? ...and now, for the Porsche in front of your house... :P ---------- "We all wore the same costume as Maurice Richard did; the red-white-and-blue costume of the Montréal Canadiens, the best hockey team in the world." - Roch Carrier

*yawn* I waited at my window all night long & nothing :( Oh well, maybe christmas? lol. But it was a wonderful birthday game regardless. + the brother-in-law A-Kost got a goal. + Markov scored, who is my favouritest offensive defencemen + D'Agostini's first NHL goal. + Kovy getting a goal, & though it was an empty netter you could see the frustration drain from his face a split second after breaking the hex. When the showed him sitting on the bench moments later he was still fighting the urge to smile really big. I hope Sergei is well rested & feeling less flustered. I know I'm a chick, & people probably think I like him solely because of his good looks, but really.. I love his style of play & his emotion. & despite being French Canadian, I love the Russians. Lol. GO HABS!

happy birthday all the same! would you settle for a win?

Woah_Dana's picture
Habsolutely! Thank you so much :) GO HABS!

I love the lines. Higgins will bring some jam to Lang and Kovy. AK46 will be great with Saku. Goo! can sit for a decade as far as I am concerned.

Tête CHarée's picture
AK would be even better at RW. Anyone know if D'Ags is a natural RW or is he equally comfortable on the left?

Bill's picture
Well, Carbo has to do SOMETHING. He's pretty limited in terms of demotions and call-ups; sitting Sergei and Gui! and putting D'Agostini is a start. He also has to do something to try and get AKost going, and playing with the team's most consistent and dangerous forward this year should help. If D'Agostini keeps going to the net, he's bound to start finding it. Basically, the coach is disgusted with the inconsistent effort, and he's doing what he can to try and shake things up. Next step would probably have to be a trade ... hopefully the team wakes up. I won't get to watch the game, so hopefully Boone blogs the hell out of it. I can probably reconstruct the experience just by reading through the posts really quickly anyway!

A. Kostitsyn is a right winger. D'Agostini is a right winger. S. Kostitsyn in the press box? In Hamiliton right? Not Montreal...or does he have some sort of apartment lease that can't be broken in December?

Carbo's ultimate goal for Habs lineups: 1st line: Price-Markov-Komisarek 2nd line: Halak-Hamrlik-Georges 3rd line: Bouillon-Breezer-Dandenault 4th line: O'Byrne-Webber-Latendresse Defense: Koivu-Tanguay AK46-SK74 Kovalev-Plec Goalie: Georges Laraque!!!

wd40's picture
ah, i think he did that in the 3rd game of the season.

Haberts's picture
I'm really looking forward to seeing Koivu and AKost working together...that could be a sight to see. You know what..same goes for Pleks and Tangers...Carbo is thinking outside the box with these lines and I really like them. The Higgins-Lang-Kovalev line could do some damage as well, Kovalev might want to start shooting low for rebounds because Lang and Higgins could gobble those up for a marker or two. Looking forward to seeing these lines, Sucks that Sergs is sitting but I guess it needed to be done. Go Habs Go!

Ohmygawd, I was about to write a joke about Neil Young's "Old Man" song in dedication to one of the players yesterday, but turned out it was kind of a bad joke so I didn't post it... Wow, weird coincidence... I feel like puking (I just had too much coffee!) ---------- "We all wore the same costume as Maurice Richard did; the red-white-and-blue costume of the Montréal Canadiens, the best hockey team in the world." - Roch Carrier

coachdoug's picture
While I am tired of the line juggling I agree with who Carbo is sitting tonight. I am hoping Old Kovy will show young Kovy a thing or two. The fact that he is taking his coveted nickname alone should make Old Kovy want to show him old school how the game is played. I feel tonight will be a breakout night. Trying to get that positive energy going and kill the snake that is biting all the shooters. Tanguay, Pleks and Tom K should be a good line. I think Tanguay can play with anyone and he will produce. BGL must show something tonight. He has to at least skate with les boys and take care of business when it needs taking care of.

Tête CHarée's picture
Ian made a very insightful post about Carbo's line shuffling (probably dropped to page 2 by now). The take home message is that we're likely to see a lot more line stability as the season progresses (just like last year).

the real vinnydj's picture
No way Tanguay will stay with Plec's. Who is gonna shoot the puck?

Gr8stFranchizEvr's picture
I see your point, but both guys can pass and score and have proven that. So, ya never know. Needless to say, the constant line shuffling is frustrating. But, maybe the stars will align and by some magical fairy dust something will finally click. I think that's what Carbo's hoping.

Skotbot's picture
As i mentioned a few posts down... Tangs should be out to test his injury.. being on the "3rd" line will cut down some minutes, If tang is feeling good, look for him to switch with A Kots / Dags Do I listen to pop music because I am miserable? Or am I miserable because I listen to pop music?

Robert L's picture

Robert ,you live .How is the new gig going??

Skotbot's picture
To agree with a few posts here, i think Tang is out to test the waters.. we will see the actual line composition once hes skated a few shifts. And Dags better seize his opportunity here... cause I know a lot of HIO posters will be dissapointed if he doesnt score 4 goals and replaces Price to win the Shoot-out. Do I listen to pop music because I am miserable? Or am I miserable because I listen to pop music?

Tête CHarée's picture
Nice.... But just to be sure he stays in everyone's good books, he'd better also usurp Price's messiah status by resurrecting Maurice Richard from the dead....and finding the cap space to sign him.

Batalla's picture
I'd put Tanguay with Lang and Kovalev. Higgins seems to have some chemistry with Pleks. You'd still have 3 pretty good lines... Check out what Toronto's doing now... http://habsbros.blogspot.com/2008/12/rds-confirms-leafs-have-bomb.html Personally I'm glad that SK is scratched tonight. But I gotta admit that Lats has been doing okay. I wonder why he's scratched? I guess Begin played his way onto tonight's roster... Thoughts?

ERIC BOULTON vs BEGIN/KOSTOP or LAROCK alone? THIS IS WHAT THE HABS ARE UP AGAINST...THANK GOD WE HAVE THE LAROCK EFFECT IN PLAY TONIGHT.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=teAWcvVRdas&feature=related

Gr8stFranchizEvr's picture
While Boulton and Orr are both pretty tough guys, Big Georges has cleaned Orr's clock before. So, I don't imagine Boutlon would be standing and swinging for anywhere near that length of time! It's tough fighting a lefty, too. We'll see. Here's a reminder of what BGL can do: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GacYEtfI8MM&NR=1

wd40's picture
my hands hurt just watching that. i've never been in a hockey fight, but i imagine repeatedly hitting a guy's helmet with your fist has gotta hurt like hell in the morning.

HAB-PROFESSOR's picture
WOW. ...thanks for posting that. BGL is the real deal, we are privileged to have this guy, and anyone who doesn't think so needs to SHUT THE ^&*%$%$&^ UP! and watch this video!

Tête CHarée's picture
Assuming Boulton is a follower of "the Code" and not a yappy little mutt like Avery. I look forward to reading Big George's blog next week, just to get his perspective on the Code (starting to sound more like a Dexter forum, than one for Les Glorieux).

HAB-PROFESSOR's picture
not to worry, we have Begin for the NON-CODE sanctioned fights!

useless laraque will do absolutely nothing just like every other game then he will probably need to sit again caue his groin hurts....totally waste

HAB-PROFESSOR's picture
what are you going to say if he fights? or you'll be silent for awhile.... he does nothing? you mean he backs down from fights? because that is his role, and even shadowing the coward Lucic was SOMETHING!

are you going to stop singing his praises when he once again does nothing

Habsrule1's picture
H-P is not right very often. He's right about BGL...give the man a chance. Go Habs Go!! "I can't hear what Jeremy(Roenick) is saying because my Stanley Cup rings are in my ears" - Patrick Roy Habsrule

HAB-PROFESSOR's picture
if he backs down from a fight as a coward, then he will be subjected to my ridicule....daily! if the other party doesn't want to fight, are you calling that BGL does nothing? not sure what you mean by nothing? he is not a serial killer or cheapshot artist like SIMON or BERTUZZI.

pulling up instead of nailing lucic on the open ice hit opportunity screamed i'm useless

HAB-PROFESSOR's picture
nailing him from behind or blindsided? that is the work of cowards. The exact vermin that BGL brings justice to.

Tête CHarée's picture
Shadowing Lucic was more than something....completely disrupted play of that line. In fact, the only reason Lucic scored is because Kovy didn't clear him from in front of the net. But let's not resurect the Kovy bashing. Let's just hope that his groin is sufficiently healed that he can contribue.

JD and 24 cups, thanks for the help!!

cautiousoptimist's picture
Lang with Kovy! D'Ags with Koivu and AK! TK with a chance to shine! Love the lines!!! Any way you slice it, we've got three solid scoring lines. It can't be easy to coach against that. 1. www.flickeringpictures.com - not a hockey site, but still kinda neat 2. Its starting to feel like Carbo is back into it this year, making a few impotant decisions that will do us good. Plenty of links to watch tonights game live online: http://habsonlinetv.blogspot.com/

HAB-PROFESSOR's picture
I LIKE THESE LINES...GOOD JOB CARB...let me explain: 1.Andrei Kostitsyn-Saku Koivu-Matt D'Agostini - D'ags better shine, because this is an opportunity of a life time, he couldn't have orchestrated his chance any better than this, playing with our elite - I expect big things from this line. 2.Christopher Higgins-Robert Lang-Alex Kovalev - Higgs will be less eratic playing with these sagacious magicians. 3.Alex Tanguay-Tomas Plekanec-Tom Kostopoulos - Kostop is going to do all the dirty work, he is playing with our best skaters, maybe he can crash the net, I'm sure Tang will move to Koivu's line if D'ag doesn't instantly score. 4.Steve Bégin-Maxim Lapierre-Georges Laraque - This line will be entertaining to watch....I hope Atlanta has some goons.

Habsrule1's picture
OMG...let me explain. Just totally shocked that H-P has has delivered us a well thought out post. If you concentrate on what's going on, you can actually write some intelligent comments. The fact that your signature is gone may well mean you are getting it. We have the tools on this team, with or without D'Ag and the boys, but I hope D'Ag forces Carbo's hand. This is definitely his time to shine! But he's a kid...if he doesn't break out now, he will eventually. Go Habs Go!! "I can't hear what Jeremy(Roenick) is saying because my Stanley Cup rings are in my ears" - Patrick Roy Habsrule

HAB-PROFESSOR's picture
I admit I like the lines, but my post was boring compared to those other eloquent pieces of art! whats important tonight is containing Eric Boulton - as 24CUPS revealed. this is going to be a dangerous game...thank God we have the BGL effect in play.

Habsrule1's picture
See...we can agree on some things ;-) I'm a BGL supporter too. He's been playing hurt when he's played, and my guess id he's been listening to instructions. He needs a bigger role on the team...play almost every game, but it's hard to justify with all the bodies we have right now. I think his role is going to grow as the season goes on and the healthier he gets. Go Habs Go!! "I can't hear what Jeremy(Roenick) is saying because my Stanley Cup rings are in my ears" - Patrick Roy Habsrule

HAB-PROFESSOR's picture
I think Carb is doing well using him, lets face it, we can't dress him if the other team has NOBODY...like the laffs, who is he going to nullify? Domenic Moore? I loved the way Carb used him to go after Lucic after that punk started to take liberties with our stars, that was a brilliant move by Carb, right up to the point of not having him on when Lucic scored. Also loved the way he neutralizes Chara and Neil. Fighting is a big part of the game, its a show that we've been absent from for several years...especially the HEAVY class.

Habsrule1's picture
I think from now on, when Carbo figures out who BGL needs to shadow, he'll gear him up and prepare him to play whatever minutes the guy he is shadowing plays. For some reason (possibly injury), he didn't want BGL playing quite as many minutes as Lucic. For teams that have a Lucic or something similar, BGL has to be on him the whole game. I'm not sure if I agree with "the code", or even fully understand it. I'm looking forward to BGL's next blog where he promised to explain it a little. I predict a win, with BGL mattering. Habs take it 4-1. Go Habs Go!! "I can't hear what Jeremy(Roenick) is saying because my Stanley Cup rings are in my ears" - Patrick Roy Habsrule

HAB-PROFESSOR's picture
lets not confuse BGL's shadowing with the shadowing that a DANDY or BEGIN or CHIP would do...or the type of Shadowing perfected by Carb himself and Gainey if you want to elevate it even higher. BGL will shadow with one purpose, to destroy if the shadowee is willing to drop them. The day they eliminate the instigator will be a great day for Hockey - it is the instigator penalty that created that DAMN CODE. (basically the code is Heavy weights don't fight unless both agree to drop them, and then to break the fight when one submits - by both agreeing this insures nobody is given an instigator - thereby they avoid problems with the coach)

Habsrule1's picture
agreed, but he can be very useful shadowing even if he doesn't ultimately fight. He strikes fear in the opponent, and that's a major distraction. I'm convinced Lucic would have not even gone near the net if BGL was on him. I'm not even sure he was thinking about hockey at all...just survival! Go Habs Go!! "I can't hear what Jeremy(Roenick) is saying because my Stanley Cup rings are in my ears" - Patrick Roy Habsrule

HAB-PROFESSOR's picture
absolutely, but that only works with LUCIC type players, who have a massive part of their game in the physical department. who else could it work for? NOT: Alfredson, Heatly, Spezza, St Loius, Datsuyck, HOssa, etc.... the BGL effect would have NO EFFECT. So against the "Joe Thorntons" yes.... (DON CHERRY CLAIMS JOE THORTON to be the BEST HOCKEY player in the WORLD)

Tête CHarée's picture
I'm stunned.....you like the lines? You don't think we should bring up the entire farm team? OK...smart assed comments aside, I agree with you. If Tanguay was in game-shape he might make an interesting addition to the Koivu-D'Ags combo. In all seriousness, I'm sensing big things from the 3rd line...T-Bomb digs the puck out, beautiful set-up by Tanguay, tip-in/rebound by Pleks.

Can't post???? Being flagged for spam????

JD_'s picture
I posted something last night to the effect that the best way to straighten out SirGuy would be to strap him in for last night's Neil Young concert and subject him to a couple of hours of that life-draining falsetto voice. That would do anyone in. It was flagged for spam and never made it. I suspect what actually happened is Boone and his apparatchik filter out any postings which diss the ol' Canadian icon. JD

I'm sure you meant to say that subjecting him to 2 hours of life-affirming, kick-***, old school, raw rock and roll would have had a humbling effect on the young pup as the old man showed him how to bring everything you've got every time anyone is paying to see you play. That would make a whole lot more sense. In closing: Neil Young flat out rocks. Anyone who says otherwise has no business listening to rock, punk, folk, grunge or any form of "alternative" music.

JD_'s picture
I'm well into Neil Young's core demographic. Just can't take him. Same goes for Dylan. Caught Crosby, Stills, & Nash live in '94, sans Young. Thing about opinions is they aren't always popular. For example, would rather see The Bomb on the first line and D'Agostini on the third. Some folks would disagree with that suggestion, perhaps even going as far as to suggest I have no business watching the Habs play. JD

"I'm well into Neil Young's core demographic. Just can't take him. Same goes for Dylan." Oh, now you're playing with fire. If you start dissing Leonard Cohen, I might have to reach through this monitor and give you a proper throttling. ;-)

Skotbot's picture
So, yes Young was on stage last night. I bet it was a great show.. Anyone go? Im VERY curious as to how the fans enjoyed the opening act.. Most "casual" music fans dont EVER enjoy a first act, and some go out of their way to avoid it, however Wilco is more than an opening band, they have 4 critically acclaimed albums under their belt. and on their last visit to Montreal they sold out the Metropolis. If I am not mistaken Neil chose Wilco as the opening act himself, as he is a big fan. But, alas... I bet another great band graced the stage last night to a crowd who completly over-looked them. Do I listen to pop music because I am miserable? Or am I miserable because I listen to pop music?

While we agree on Larry, we diverge greatly on Neil. I saw him last year at Massey Hall, pure magic, and he sang just the way he always has, few signs of age in that department unlike many other aging rock stars.

TommyB's picture
I saw Neil twice with Crosby, Stills, and Nash...pretty close to the best concerts I ever saw. I also saw Neil with Crazyhorse when he did that weird mid-west kinda farm tour with the strange video backdrop. I didn't care much for that...but you had to give Neil his space to do his thing, then they cleared the stage and Neil/Crazyhorse rocked the joint for about an hour. Neil quit when the last string on his guitar broke.
