Update: Canadiens not for sale – Gillett

posted by Dave Stubbs at 22h02 EST on Dec 4

Canadiens owner George N. Gillett Jr., at the Bell Centre for today's unveiling of the club's Centennial Plaza, spoke at length off the record with a small group of reporters about stories pertaining to his financial situation.

Finally, he went on the record to state categorically that, contrary to various  reports, the Canadiens are not for sale. Gillett added finally that "I'm angry that I need to keep denying (that the club is for sale)."

Here are those remarks in Gillett's own measured words.

Gazette story with more background below.

Canadiens majority owner George N. Gillett Jr. vehemently denied on Thursday that his hockey club is for sale, contradicting a rumoured Forbes magazine report that ultimately never was published.

The phantom Forbes story deflected a little of the spotlight off the Canadiens' unveiling of Centennial Plaza, the ribbon-cutting  for the Bell Centre concourse tribute to the club's history coming on its 99th birthday.

And that deflection had Gillett much less than pleased.

The Colorado resident's finances have been ripe for  speculation in recent days. His cash flow and debt load have been scrutinized in several published reports, especially  related to his co-ownership of the Premier League's Liverpool  Football Club.

Gillett flatly denied comment Thursday when first asked about  a sale of the Canadiens, rumour of a Forbes story making the rounds early in the day but finally proving to have never been reported by the magazine.

Yet later, after a lengthy, spirited, off- the-record discussion with a small group of reporters, he  spoke for the record, saying that neither he nor as far as he  knew anyone in the organization has spoken to any individual  or party about the sale of the Canadiens.

"The Montreal Canadiens club has never been for sale," Gillett  said. "We have never prepared documents, materials. (I have)  never authorized anyone, never prepared materials to that  end.

"I'm angry that I need to keep denying (that the club is for  sale)."

Gillett bought a majority stake in the Canadiens in 2001,  acquiring the Bell (then Molson) Centre with the acquisition.

He has since broadened his sport holdings, which now include  co-ownership of Liverpool with fellow sports magnate Tom  Hicks and the primary stake in NASCAR's Gillett-Evernham  Motorsports, which yesterday was reported to be on the verge  of absorbing the Dodge operation of historic Petty Enterprises  for the 2009 stock-car racing season.

The phantom report Thursday had Gillett was asking $400 million for the  Canadiens, a team he purchased for $181 million and was  recently valued by Forbes.com at $334 million.

A Montreal newspaper report last month had BlackBerry head  Jim Balsillie saying the Canadiens were for sale. Balsillie, an unfulfilled NHL franchise suitor in recent years, denied he made those comments and said he apologized to Gillett for the  story, while both Gillett and NHL commissioner Gary Bettman vociferously denied the team was on the market.

On Thursday, Gillett floated the idea that he might be willing to entertain partnerships at some time in the future.

"We have received many inquiries over the years regarding a possible sale (of the Canadiens). We have never entertained  any of them," he said.

"We have thought on several occasions of trying to create a  way that we might create ... an investment strip that might  enable fans or interested parties in investing in one or more of  our sports properties.

"I presume that we will continue that process on occasion in the future."

Not too keen on the idea of Balsillie as a potential owner of the team.As someone posted somewhere,he could be another Mark Cuban and I don't think he's the right type for the Habs. He'd probably move the team to Hamilton and call them the Bulldogs and move the farm team to Montreal and call them the Canadiens!

Gillett isn't selling the Habs. If money is an issue, he will likely (and I think is looking to) sell his stake in Liverpool. But his financial situation is part of the reason, montreal withdrew from MLS expansion.

What's the difference if the Habs owner is "James Laurence Balsillie" instead of "George N. Gillett"? Team ownership is just about INC. As a fan, who cares?!

In part thats true however, I believe you need to have an owner who has the passion for the game, the fans and works hard to put the best product out there. Gillett.... I sometimes wonder? It's NEVER over til it's OVER!

I feel very sorry for George Gillette because he has been more than a good owner. He came along at a time no Canadian buyers would take over our club, which was close to leaving Montreal if you can wrap your heads around that. He has been the one to sign off on getting the management of this club to a respectable level once again. He signed off on an impeccable celebration of our 100th. He is a guy we have a lot to thank him for. He is denying his plight because he has no choice. The financial mechanics that worked for him before is collapsing as it is for many others today. I don't think he WANTS to sell, but at some point he may have no choice. And, my opinion is that will be as much a loss for us as he. Good luck George. Hope this damn economy can turn around in time. He is a business man, not a hockey fan. He has no allegiance, no loyalty to anything except money. Make no mistake about that, it's a business baby, and it will go the very second his business empire dictates.

Not really a surprising article I'm pretty sure leaves all the decision making about the team to Bob Gainey and Carbo. I heard he doesn't like getting involved since he's a pro businessman not hockey trainer. So even if he did sell not much would change.
