Mathieu Dandenault finishes a second-period shift with a broken arm against the Calgary Flames.
John Kenney, Gazette

Head coach Guy Carbonneau has just announced that defenceman Mathieu Dandenault is out with a broken arm suffered tonight in the second period when checked into the boards.

Dandenault finished the shift in great distress before he finally left the ice.

Expect D Ryan O'Byrne back in the lineup Thursday. No word yet on any callups.

Forward Christopher Higgins is headed to the doctor tomorrow for an MRI on what was reported to be an upper-body injury.

Carbo says he has no way of telling whether he's out for a day or six weeks.

thinking that Lats might be back in the lineup, I'm getting depressed. But on the bright side, just as soon as Higgins comes back, Lats is waived!

Forget Sundin, it may be time to look into the rumoured deals for Bouwmeester. There's your PP pointman and your injury issues on the blueline solved all at once. Imagine Jay with Hamrlik as a #2 unit? Oh I could handle that. Plus Pete Deboer's down in Florida and knows Weber very well from their years in Kitchener, I am sure that would make for a good starting point in the negotiations as well.

gillis's picture
Is he's swiss, he'll play in montreal. (except for Gerber)

Mathieu Carle will get the call up before Weber does. Same type of d-man, same hard shot, same type of offensive instincts but he's spent a year with the bulldogs already. There's still a pecking order to go through before the Habs call up players....by the way, Weber 23 Games - 11 pts, Carle, 16 games 10 pts.

Tête CHarée's picture
Update on Dandy recently posted on TSN....had surgery to repair the bone, and is out "indefinitely". Too bad, he's been steady on the blueline. Let's hope that OB can find some consistency, because from what I've been reading, Weber ain't quite ready for the big show. Still no word about Higgings http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=259159&lid=sublink01&lpos=headlines_nhl

Couple of cents from the peanut gallery: (1) I've suggested Kovalev be traded or not be resigned for next year. I'm glad to say he played well last night so I hope the '07-'08 Kovalev has shown up and the '06-'07 Kovalev is gone. He played very well last night but let's hope he doesn't disappear again for a stretch. (2) I think losing Dandenault is a loss because he never bitched when he was a healthy scratch and has a few Stanley Cup rings. He also wants to play in Montreal. It's time to see if O'Byrne is ready to step up. Weber may get a call-up too if Komisarek isn't ready to come back. I'm not sure how much Brisebois can play before getting tired and making mental errors. (3) If Plekanec and D'Agostini played at least two seasons in the AHL maybe all of our prospects should. Perhaps that is what Latendresse needed but hindsight is that way. Before we all start demanding that Pacioretty and other kids straight out of junior or college get called up we should all (myself included) keep this in mind. (4) Despite not playing much recently, Halak played very well when we needed him. I was happy to see Price congratulating him as well. I think that kind of camaraderie is very important. (5) Years ago if we had lost players like Higgins, Komisarek and Dandenault for pro-longed periods of time we would be screwed. Because of the great work of Bob Gainey, Pierre Gauthier, Trevor Timmins and others we have built up enough depth in the organization to withstand such challenges. Next time one wants to complain about our management team keep that in mind. They aren't perfect but we could have far worse.

gillis's picture
2. Are you sure? I remember him complaining last year when he was playing like ***. I was sure he was going to get traded. Oh well, hope he gets better soon.

1. I can never agree with this, trading Kovy - he brings too much talent and entertainment, gives us the legitimacy we haven't had in a long time, he is at the least a great teacher for the east euros... 2. Obyrne is ready, he just needs to play a lot of games, just like Komi in his first year. 3. It doesn't hurt to experiment for 1 or 2 games if the opportunity presents itself...and it has now. You'll know right away if they've got what it takes or if their timid and need more time, D'ags wasn't a surprise, he is already wired for the finesse play style of the andre/koivu line...add the fact of his youth and quick speed = success. Loved the resiliency when he took that illegal hit. 4. Halak proved himself 2 years ago when he brought us to the door of the playoffs before Huet came back and lost against the leafs...but I digress. 5. Agreed - When Gainey/Carb came on board i was happy!...only problem is they are so slow to pull the trigger on change...

i posted this in a different blog ----- but instead of thinking about Webber and what not for our PP ----- why not try AK46 for his big shot from the point ... Atlanta does it with Kolvochuck and it seems to work well --- i find goalies have problems handeling AK46's shot ... so i think it would be worth a look

this is a blessing in desguise.... i know i know its never right to wish that a player gets injured but if Dandenault and possibly higgins are put on LTIR this would help with the Sundin Signing.... Say what you want about him .... but im all in favor of adding another warrior for the stanley cup .... and we can worry about a D man at the deadline

Ya, I agree with you. The timing is interesting considering Komi is coming back and someone would have to been sent down, which likely would have been D'Agostini (he wouldnt have to clear waivers) Adding Sundin would make our offense unstoppable.... Perhaps he can center the 'third line' with pleks and S.Kos on the wings... It would hopefully get pleks and SKos going... We can trade for a defensemen later one... although I think if the habs stick to carbo's game plan and play a strong defensive game, we won't need the extra help on D.

joeybarrie's picture
No way D'agostini would have gone down. This is a blessing in disguise, for Latendresse. He now will have a chance to show why we should keep him. I hope he does well, cause I like him. I want him to stay.

it's too bad your admiration is misguided. How can you like that guy? he does nothing. can't skate, score, shoot, check, hit, defend, pass. C'mon wise up and get on the D'Agostini bandwagon.

Please he carried a team ( the leafs ) that are nothing without him .... He destroyed Ottawa every playoffs ( thats a plus if we meet them) and he he's got more playoff experience than d'ags ( plus he's a right hand shot 6"5 center who can score 70 + pts a season did i mention he's proven ? ) doesn't get anybetter.... besides hell have all winter to find chemestry and we will hopefully battle for the stanley cup with this team: A.Kost Koivu Tangay ( no offence to d'ags here ) Lang Sundin Kovalev Higgins Plecks Lats/S.K/D'ags(if he's still around) Kosto/ Lapierre /Begin/Laraque Markov Komi Hammer Bowmeester ( this will come via trade: Lats + picks) Bouillon Gorges Price Halak One can dream right ?

Lang on the wing? Crazy talk...

Full credit and props to Dandy for finishing that shift. He looked up turned to skate off and saw the play was back in the Habs end. Went back, took his position wihtut a stick and skating off when the puck was cleared. Way to go Dandenault!

Batalla's picture
Dandenault still took hits and tried to get in the path of shots on that shift. You really have to respect him for that. What a warrior! As for Higgins, well, he played with a broken collar bone a couple years ago, so I expect it's the same type of injury. Still stoked about Dandy's play though. Would SK74 have done that? http://habsbros.blogspot.com/

yourhabs's picture
He finished that shift like a champion, considering his arm was just dangling there, haha. http://yourhabs.com - My Montreal Canadiens Blog

habfan53's picture
Great GUTS by Dandy to stay in there. The big diference with Higgins coming off is that in Dandenaults case the Flames were applying pressure, in Higgins case the Canadiens were in the Flames end.

NoTinFoilCups's picture
Well this temporarily solves Bob's dilemna, ie. who to dispatch upon Komi's return. Would have liked to see Tenderness sent where he belongs. On the other hand this may open the door for Weber. I think he's worth a look on the power play. Some young blood like Dagostini keeps the veterans on their toes.

Everybody needs to get off of this bus for now. The only thing Weber has going for him is his shot from the point; God help us if a Bertuzzi-type forward comes down his side of the ice. Weber is smallish and young, he's not ready or capable of out-muscling that opponent, and his positional play is still suspect. If you're only bringing him up for the power play, then you are restricting his development. A lot of people on this site say that Lats should have spent time in Hamilton, that OB needs to be sent down, that SK74 needs to be sent down, that Chips nneded to be sent down....give your head a shake, because Weber is younger, less developed and less mature than those players. Leave the kid in Hamilton for the year, and we'll review this again in 2009-2010.

so why not use Weber the same way we used Streit? on the PP, and on the 3rd or 4th line. He doesn't have to play defence.

any word on the extent of Higgins injury or how long Dandy will be out? It's funny. When Dandy wasn't playing D, I wasn't in favor of us keeping him, but once he went back on D, he was quite respectable, and I think he was quite credible. At least he's better than Breezer, and much more macho.

Dandy showed the rest of the habs the effort that should be given every night by finishing that shift with the broken arm. Carbo should put that video on loop before every game the rest of the season.

Morenz7's picture
Espy loved how Dustin Boyd gave him a shot while he was hunched over in pain. Real classy.

wd40's picture
yeah, that was real classy for sure. if you believe in Karma, Boyd should be careful. what a warrior Dandy is, though.

Corio's picture
HAHA ya true, he was ready to block shots whilst holding his arm in pain.. “He knows, like, unnecessary facts about putting Sears catalogs on your shin pads.” Sean Avery on Don Cherry

Maffu's picture
VERY good point, after the Higgins hit he went straight to the bench and didn't even look at the puck. We like Higgins (sometimes) and all but he didn't even look, can the pain of whatever Higgins has be worse than Dandenault's BROKEN ARM?

Rugger's picture
If it is a seperated shoulder, then absolutely could be a lot more painful than a broken arm.

Habsrule1's picture
Usually it's actually smarter to get off the ice if you can. That way, someone who can actually help the team can get in there. That takes nothing away from Dandy's heart. He's wired that way, but leaving the ice to help the team is not a disgrace. Go Habs Go!! Chuck's picture
As gusty of a move as it was by Dandenault to stay in the play, he was for the most part useless to the Habs D at that point, other than to get hit by a shot and risk a more serious injury. He had no stick, couldn't go down to block a shot, couldn't move a forward out of the way... For the five seconds that the team would have been shorthanded while getting a replacement on the ice, it might have been better if he had skated directly to the bench to get a useful body out there. That said, there's no way to criticize the guy's heart. __________________________________

Chuck - without sounding cruel, I totally agree. Injured players and players with broken sticks are basically usless out there - if at all possible, get off the ice or get another stick. BTW, nice crosscheck on the back of Dandy by Iginla while Dandy was hunched over in front of the net. Going For The Brass Ring - 25 Cups In 100 Years

is that your dog? looks like a kind dog. a lab? retreiver? I have a maltese. We love our dogs, right?

Steve, Chuck While I agree in principal that an injured player should leave the ice, there is more than one CODE in the NHL and one of them is you don't leave the ice until the puck clears the blue line. Smart or not, that is just the way it is.

Chuck's picture
I can't dispute the "code", but if the Flames had scored while Dandenault was still on the ice everyone would be criticizing his decision to stay out instead of lauding him for his courage. Save for the broken arm, at least the play worked out in the Habs' favour. Here's hoping that he'll heal well and be back on skates ASAP. __________________________________

Maffu's picture
Hmmmm good point. I still think it was worse than taking a quick look. This is after seeing a highlight of a goalie who left his net because of a delayed penalty and on the way to the bench realizing he was in a 2 on 1... and scored! So looking up to see where the puck is, can be done no matter what happens.

where was that? a goalie can not play the puck past center ice.

Maffu's picture
On TSN Monday night they were showing the top 10 best goalie goals. It might have been a junior or college game, definitely was not in the NHL. They showed some soccer ones and this hockey one. I think it was the anniversary of when Hextall scored.

It was Major Jr and yes he scored and yes it was disallowed for having the tender cross the red line, but what the hell, he got on TSN!

Corio's picture
I have to say, Dandenault has been stellar on Defense. I am not sure why he hasn't been playing Defense this entire time. He is quick, moves the puck well, makes excellent decisions and is just plain solid on defense. I am very impressed albeit sad that he will be out now with a broken arm.. I guess now O'Byrne will be back and hopefully will start playing with some more confidence.. “He knows, like, unnecessary facts about putting Sears catalogs on your shin pads.” Sean Avery on Don Cherry

I agree, he should be #5 in my opinion, Carbo is blinded by Breezer and consistently pigeon holes players in to certain roles.

No, no, no! The Habs don't need another undersized forward in St. Louis. I too, look good in a Canadiens' jersey, but you wouldn't want me on the roster, believe me :)

true, i agree. There was a time when Vinnie would been the one to move over to the Habs but his contract is wacked now, he's stuck. If the Habs need a current player from the NHL it would be a D man. The hit on Phaneuf was clean and they got all pissed because Phaneuf is their best player so they were standing up for him, it was funny. Not sure why Markov got a tripping penalty on the play though because that hit was SO not tripping and imo was perfectly legal.. “He knows, like, unnecessary facts about putting Sears catalogs on your shin pads.” Sean Avery on Don Cherry

He was clearly leading with his shoulder, Phaneuf dodged into his trailing leg. Would have been a normal squeeze on the boards if he didn't try to be fancy.

You guys should have heard the Calagary announcers berating Markov's so called "dipicable actions!"

Keenan is a moron. There was no dirty hit. Just a bunch of baby's blatting becasuse they lost. Pathetic! Keenan and Phagoof make a good team. Every time the Habs play those dirtbags someone gets hurt and it ain't a Flame. GO HABS.

Looks like Penguins fans have taken over the all-star balloting, Malkin and Crosby now in the lead. Komi and Markov still lead, but Gonchar and Whitney are closing in (as is Fleury on Price) and will likely take over by tomorrow. Question for Honest Dave: is it ok to vote again since we're in a good ol' fashioned urination contest with Pittsburgh fans? C'mon. 5 penguins can't be better than 5 habs, can it? I mean, we're picking between evils here, I recognize that, but it's one or the other...

what a farce! Gonchar hasn't even played 1 game this season because he's injured! what a joke the allstar voting! let the writers decide who gets in!

coutNY's picture
Let them waste their votes on Gonchar and Whitney they won't be elgible since you need 20 games under your belt... Ganchar won't be back for sure and Not sure on Whitney but pretty sure he wouldn't either.

Bryan, Thanks for helping me round out my Christmas list. Plastic ice eh. hmmmph What did I say about those cowboys in Tampa this summer? A little publicity may not be a bad thing in a place like Tampa, but when there's ton of hot air behind it, it seldom amounts to good things.

Habs played a great team game tonight. The injuries to Higgy and Dands gave the team a reason to win. The line of Tanguay, Lang and Kovalev was by far the best line on the ice tonight for the Habs tonight. This line has great potential to explode on any given night. Now the Habs have 2 scorings lines that will produce in future games. D'ags was a machine on the second goal. As Pierre Maguire would says that was the monster play of the night. It sure was!! Halak played his best game of the season by far. Halak's play gave the team the lift they were looking for and the team started to play with confidence by scoring the 1st goal of the game. I got to give credit to Dandenealt. His courage’s effort for getting up and trying to help his team-mates by not allowing the Flames to score was second to none. Dandeneault could have rolled over and play dead in the corner. But no, He never gave up on his team-mates and showed what he is really made off. My hat goes out to him for staying out there like he did. Here is my game review report. Lang scores to by going to the net with the puck for one and staying in front of the net for the other goal. This is what the Habs have to continue to do on every shift. The Habs PP has been improving. They are getting their scoring chances and for some unknown reason they cannot finish. The PP goals will come and lookout when they do. Their 5 on 5 plays has improved by far from last season. Now here are a few pointers that I seen of this game. Brisebois continues to make mistakes game after game and still comes out as a plus 2 for the night. Amazing!! He did the right choice not to fight Iggy with only 2 1/2 minutes left to go in the game. That was a smart play on his part. Iggy could have planted him 6 ft under in no time. It would have not been a pretty picture afterwards. This fight would have been to one sided. Here is my point on the hit to Phaneuf...Markov tried to throw a shoulder check and Phaneuf avoid the hit which left them both locking knee on knee. Markov is not that type of player to that to any player. I hope nothing else will come out of this when they go to Calgary next time. Go Habs Go!!

I have so much to say all at once about last night's beauty against the Flames, that I can barely collect cohesive thoughts.
