Update from Canadiens practice, an optional workout at Brossard following Tuesday's 4-1 win over Calgary.

• Defenceman Mathieu Dandenault had surgery this morning to repair his broken arm. He's obviously out indefinitely.

• Forward Christopher Higgins was going for an MRI on a shoulder injury suffered Tuesday. RDS colleague Renaud Lavoie, a reliable source almost always, believes Higgins might be out for awhile. Coach Guy Carbonneau said only that Higgins definitely was out tomorrow vs. Tampa Bay.

• Carbo is undecided about who plays goal Thursday vs. Tampa Bay. Carey Price is fighting a cold, and Jaroslav Halak was superb against Calgary.

• The coach says he'll have all 21 healthy bodies skating tomorrow morning, and while Ryan O'Byrne is in on defence, Carbo was not fully committed to the insertion of Guillaume Latendresse up front. "Probably Guillaume," he said. "But we still have Georges (Laraque) who's healthy, too."

• In other Latendresse news, Olivier has been promoted from ECHL Cincinnati to Hamilton. Gui!'s 22-year-old brother leads the Cyclones with 18 goals and 15 assists in 23 games.

• Today's Darwin Award winner: Joe Sakic. Already sidelined by back problems, the Colorado captain broke three fingers in a snowblower accident and will be out at least three months. The mishap occurred at Sakic's home Tuesday afternoon.

He'd be scooped up on waivers and we'd have to pay part of his salary. I still believe he'll be a big part of our future. Go Habs Go!! "I can't hear what Jeremy(Roenick) is saying because my Stanley Cup rings are in my ears" - Patrick Roy Habsrule

The Pens fans DID cheat, there's proof, but the NHL won't do anything about it as long as their beloved Crosby gets in

In the Spirit of the Season! I am making my Habs Christmas wish list and thought I would share it with you, the good folks at HIO in case you had any more good ideas: Here is my gift idea for… Dags – a future as bright as his first 5 games BGL – a game where Lucic doesn’t run and hide like a small child Markov – a couple of teeth and his old line-mate back Boulon – size to match his courage; one of those mini-fold-up ladders Lang – an empty net big enough to score on (big) Hamrlik – a seeing eye shot from the point Kovalev – the belief that he can score 40 goals a season Higgins – the drive to score some of the 40 he thinks he can. Tom the Bomb - a net to catch Plekanec’s passes Plekanec – line-mates that can catch passes and shoot S Kostitsyn – a weather vane so he can tell which way the wind’s blowing; a humble pie Lats – binoculars to see the game from the press box better Brisebois – a nickname he actually likes (Woody? Reese?) Begin - a three-day rest between all games A. Kostitsyn – a scrapper to put in his rebounds… wait a minute, he has that now. How about a dose of humility (reality) that he can give to his little brother to help keep him on the team Price – a supportive coach who respects his talent as well as his age and backs him up to the press. Halak – the chance to play every 5 or 6 games (at least) Carbo – Dags. Insight as to how to motivate others without criticism. And most importantly… Koivu – that every other Hab will play like he does every game – and the cup that would result if they did. ~Listen to the smart dog!

Without their A line up too. Good smart third period they played tonight against the Bruins. Well coached team. Meanwhile in Atlanta, Boudreau's good buddy hasn't got a clue.

WindsorHab-10's picture
Hopefully the start of a very very long losing streak. Just hate that team and anything Boston related.

showey47's picture
With the bruins playing so well, i hope it forces bob's hand in adding a pure scorer with size and a real #4 dman in order to compete with them. We can't keep going with the breezer as our #4 dman. I was hoping that when komi came back gorges would stay in the top 4, keep dandy with bouillon and put breezer in the pressbox. But with dandy's injury that won't happen.

I think its more like "You see here (points with stick to the corner of net) we don't want the puck to cross this line. Unless the puck is at least this high of the ice (points with his hand)

Well now that Olivier Latendress has been brought up to Hamilton to replace D'Agostini who is going to stay in Mtl. on the 1st line. That leaves only one forward for a healthy scratch and zero defencemen. Sure hope no one else goes down on D before Komisaric gets back.

wouldn't it be interesting if everyone signed one year deals like hossa? things would be wacky.

Haberts's picture
Brutal, totally brutal. If I am correct, Dandy is a UFA...could that be the last we saw of him in a Habs jersey? And Higgins...he just can't stay healthy...I love the guy, he's my favorite hab...but he's just got some rotten luck, every season is marred by injury and everytime he returns he's a step back from where he was before he left. Something's gotta give for Yaley.

Dandy will be back Jan 15-20. Broken bones (wrist/forearm) rarely result in more than a 6 week heal process.

manorrd's picture
Amen to that, brother! Remember when he started out 2 seasons ago like gangbusters, got hurt, and came back? He never regained that confidence and that form. :(

Bob Clarke says on OTR that their are two teams in the east that are the best fit for Sundin: Philly and Montreal. He said they are the two teams that have 3 lines of skilled forwards, and solid mobile defensemen. I can't say I argue with him.

likehoy's picture
“I got the idea to put Alex with Kovy and Lang on Saturday when we were tied 1-1 with the Devils, but I decided to wait,” admitted Carbonneau, who was rewarded with trio combining for seven points against the Flames. “I had a feeling that facing his former team and his ex-coach would make Alex want to make a statement.” you would think these ideas would be coming fast and furious with the tinkerman but it took 26 games for him to think of it and implement it.

A couple of weeks ago someone said that 'the Lang experiment is obviously a failure'. At the time he had 6 goals, playing as, or better than, expected for a third line centre. I hope we can get a few more such 'failures'. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If a man speaks in a forest where no woman can hear him, is he still wrong?

WindsorHab-10's picture
Just keep calling them 'failures'.

I think that was 24Cups who is a Lang basher, he wanted Sundin badly or any other laff for that matter.

Feisty today!!!

I can't attest to the truth of this, but a buddy just sent this to me: In the middle of a grueling six game road trip where a very young hockey team is away from home, the third game of the trip ends late on a cold Canadian Saturday night. This is the only break on the trip and the three days between games allow them the only break to get back home in their own beds for a couple of days before going back on the road. A scheduled commercial flight waits for them at Toronto's International Airport for the short flight home; they could be home by midnight. This plane departs on schedule, but without a single member of the hockey team. Back in the locker room a vote is taken after the game was complete, and a unanimous decision is made by this young team to skip this flight and stay one more day. They make arrangements to check back in the hotel and on a frozen Sunday morning charter two buses that have no heat and begin a journey two hours straight north into a sparsely inhabited Canada , but where hockey is its passion. They arrive at their destination to the surprise of the teams general manager who is there attending his fathers wake. After a few emotional hours, this team boards the buses and heads back for a two-hour trip back to Toronto. On the way they ask the drivers to stop in a tiny Canadian town because they are hungry. To the shock of the patrons and workers at this small hockey town McDonald's, a professional team walks out of two rickety buses and into the restaurant, which just happens to have pictures of two members of this team on its wall. The patrons know every single one of these players by sight being Fanatic fans of hockey in these parts. One can only imagine their amazement of the locals seeing and the entire professional hockey team sit down and have a meal in their tiny little town in the middle of a hockey season. After a while they board the buses and catch their same flight 24 hours later, giving one day to their general manager. Have I made this up, is this an excerpt from some fictional book? No. This a true story of the Blackhawks last Saturday night and they decided to attend Dale Tallon's fathers funeral. It's amazing that such a good story can be found nowhere on the internet, and not even mentioned in the Chicago papers. Had one of the Blackhawks got into a fight and punched some drunken loser in a Toronto bar it would be plastered all over papers and the television. This being said, its hard to imagine any professional football, basketball or baseball team doing this, but the members of the Blackhawks claim any "hockey" team would have done this. This is one reason I continue to be a big hockey fan I thought I would share as this story appears to have gone unnoticed.

HugeHabsFan's picture
That was a great story. Shows the true heart of hockey...thanks for sharing! ........... "To you from failing hands we throw the torch. Be yours to hold it high." I STILL BELIEVE. I WILL ALWAYS BELIEVE.

That a boy Brian, the giving back of hockey players is hardly ever mentioned, but your right, of all the sports, hockey players remember their roots and are there for each other and the community more than most people know. Ian

Thank you for the story Brian. It is always nice to see there still is decency around as well as in our favourite sport. The Hawks deserve a special accolade for this. Cheers, Ali B.

DD's picture
Thanks Brian, it's nice to hear stories of this ilk. It helps confirm to a lot of us, why we consider this the greatest game in the world.

Tête CHarée's picture
For what it's worth, the story was also run in the Ottawa Citizen. Not a guarantee that it's, but it would be nice if it was. http://communities.canada.com/ottawacitizen/blogs/hockeyscanner/archive/...

Batalla's picture
It's a good story, but at the same time kinda dumb. I mean, what sort of society are we that people who play hockey are immortalized to the point that when they go into a McDonald's, we should be shocked, surprised, and inspired? I know I'd feel all warm and gushy inside to see the Habs walk into the my office, but that's only because they're hockey players. I don't feel that way when The Nut Man comes here.

ryantheduke's picture
it's not about the mcdonalds stop though, is it? it's about a west coast team with a brutal travel schedule that is close enough and caring enough to be with their GM when he needed the company. very nice story, thanks for posting... i have really liked the blackhawks this year, now moreso.

Batalla's picture
So now I'm forced to wonder if Sakic regrets coming back instead of retiring... It's not like he's played that much... Glad I didn't take him in my pool. Then again, I did take SK74: http://habsbros.blogspot.com/

likehoy's picture
what does he regret? he hurt himself at home...he could have still hurt himself at home if he did retire... and he's making 7 million despite the injury.

Batalla's picture
That's not what I mean... I mean, why bother coming back since he hasn't played much of any games at all. Remember during the summer when he hum'd and ha'd about coming back? Then he finally decides to come back and he can't even play! That's what I mean.

likehoy's picture
he's enjoying an early retirement 7 million bonus :P

brad.men5's picture
I don't know what to think about Lats anymore. He has surges of energy during games, but just can't seem to finish off the plays that he create. He hasn't broken out as a scorer, and this is his last year for it. If he repeats the seasons that he had for the past couple of years (which is what he's building up to), BG will not give him another contract at the end of the year. Another thing for Montreal is that they're going to have to bring up another player. By bringing up Olivier, it means that another player is heading up to Montreal from Hamilton. Maybe even two. What with all these untimely injuries, we may need to bring up a defenceman and a forward. In terms of a defenceman, everyone keeps bringing up Weber's name but from what I've heard about him, he's not ready. I don't feel like having to put up with another defenceman who constantly screws up on the ice. In terms of a forward, Pax or Maxwell, perhaps? I don't know enough about the Bulldogs to make any predictions. But either way, I have faith that BG will make the right decision(s). ________________________________________________________ Check out my blog: http://canadienscentral.blogspot.com/ Leave a comment, give me feedback. The kid lands lots of hits (2nd on the team before he was benched) and 15-20 goals a year. Not a bad deal for $800k... 1. www.flickeringpictures.com - not a hockey site, but still kinda neat 2. Josh Gorges on Montreal's attack: "They're comin', they're comin' and they keep comin'. Just line after line, wave after wave..."

Olivier may be a replacement in Hamilton for D'Agostini. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If a man speaks in a forest where no woman can hear him, is he still wrong?

likehoy's picture
nah it's not his last year... he's 21 years old...higgins, plekanec, andrei kostitsyns, all made the team at 22 or 23 so if you give up on lats now it means you would have given up on all those players cause they couldn't break into the team earlier. developing a power forward like lats under his circumstances is going slow but we have time on our side with a great squad. The potential is still clearly there in latendresse and it's whether or not bob gainey would like to see out his development or move him along to another club...but latendresse's career is far from over. Mind you, gainey moved up to pick latendresse in the draft, with timmins' blessing...management probably still thinks latendresse is a project to work on...and in the foreseeable future, he's size that we might not want to give up on too soon. You saw our team get pushed around (2 injuries!!) last night, latendresse makes our team more physical, and with players like chipchura and pacioretty in years to come, the team toughness is getting stronger and players like plekanec, dany kristo will have less worries...it's sort of like the way the anaheim ducks have built their team...team toughness to let the skill guys do their thing.

size means nothing if you don't use it to your advantage. the truth is, Lats will not get any better unless he goes down to Hamilton. and ask all the exoperts, coaches, management, and they will agree on that. Just heard Carbo discussing Lats in the same sentence as Lecavalier. When McGuire heard it, he laughed very hard as did I. Carbo says Lats will have a long NHL career. Boy, he is so delusional! listening too much to the french media, I think!

likehoy's picture
i agree totally that lats needs further development...as i stated in my post and i agree lats will have a long NHL career...it's just too early to give up on him as many are chanting. and let's not get into pierre mcguire...he's out to sell ratings...i take what he says with a grain of salt and lats leads the team with hits so he's using his size...not his offensive capabilities.

Tom S.'s picture
Give Lats another chance at showing what he's got. Laraque, aside from his 2-point game, is of no use if he doesn't fight. Ditto for O'B. Carbo should insert him in the lineup and see if he resonds in a positive manner. Props to Dandy for finishing his shift - in much pain - instead of skating immediately to the bench after his injury. Burnaby Joe, what are you doing clearing the snow yourself??? You're a millionaire, pay someone to have it done! OH yeah...TSN blows!

Chuck's picture
Laraque doesn't need to drop the gloves to have a good game. If the opposition doesn't take liberties and cheap-shot our players, as Calgary did last night, then Laraque has done his job, fight or not. __________________________________

WindsorHab-10's picture
Well phrased.

Laraque is useless....to slow to do anything and i'm sorry but his presence doesn't stop anyone from taking cheap shots why cause he can't fight them and he is to slow to make a huge hit on them all teams know this the only reason he got points in that one game was cause he cherry picks sit up ot the top of the circle incase the play heads up ice cause he knows he is to slow to get into the play.... and it took the rangers only a few mins to figure out that while he is tuff to move he will trn over the puck easy enough cause his puck handling skills suck so there just patient an boom he turns it over and they take off laeving him in the dust.... dress gui at least you have a better shot at some offence

rp25's picture
On the contrary my friend ..I think Big G. is far from useless..Just look closely when there is a stoppage near the other team's net.You will notice that when he's in the lineup the other team allways takes a good look around before trying to rough up one of our guys. When he is on the scene they just put their heads down and quietly shuffle away. This gives our guys a little bit more liberty to jam at any loose pucks ..

HAB-PROFESSOR's picture
well said rp25 - thats the Larock effect.

Tom S.'s picture
Laraque didn't dress last night. We also don't have advance warning as to whether or not the other team will cheap-shot us. I was simply pondering having either Lats or Big Georges based on what they've done up till this point in the season. Frankly, neither has distinguished himself, so far at least.

Batalla's picture
I saw that and agree, but then again, those guys are fed a highlight package, they don't actually watch the games. So when they look at the package, they make assumptions. Although even in that clip, you can hear the fans cheering, so maybe they could have put 2-and-2 together?

A. Berke's picture
I don't think they're smart enough to put 2 and 2 together. Ali B.

WindsorHab-10's picture
You mean in Hamilton? Fingers crossed.

Tête CHarée's picture
I'd love to see Latts play with his brother.....in Hamilton. Not likely going to happen though.

DELUSIONAL!

Tête CHarée's picture
I'm not a Latts hater....I would love nothing more than to see him develop into his full potential. IMO, he was rushed into the line-up (understandable given the roster at the time), which cost him a great learning experience in Hamilton. Now there's no way to send him down, since he'd be snapped up on waivers. Instead of getting frustrated in the pressbox, he could be working on his skating and postioning, not to mention his confidence. I'm not saying he can't or won't mature into the power forward we need....it's just going to be a rough ride.

Lots of sour people at work here today fuming of the "flagrant" knee by Markov. What a bunch of losers. I haven't enjoyed being at work like that in a long time :)

bigjames's picture
dunno what the fuss is about. the game was out of reach by that point, celine was not hurt, and in fact marky could have been hurt himself. if the game had turned on that play or celine was out for 3 weeks, ok. but otherwise it is a distraction to the fact that they lost fair and square!

JIMVINNY's picture
Timo - you're in Calgary, aren't you? I got a lot of the same reactions today too. Stupid Flamers fans.

Just think about all the crap they used to give Kasparaitis. The lion's share of the hip checks he threw were in fact legal. Just because guys are no longer ready for them and skate with their damned heads down -- hello Eric Lindross -- doesn't make them illegal.

Izzy's picture
according to Keenan it was a FRAGRANT knee

likehoy's picture
i heard that and i laughed...he's got a keen sense of smell like a greyhound.

Tête CHarée's picture
The only thing FRAGRANT was the BS coming out of Keenan.

What was obvious on the replay was that Markov tried to lean his shoulder into Phaneuf and as he tried to avoid the hit, THEIR knees collided. Markov didn't blatantly stick out his knee. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If a man speaks in a forest where no woman can hear him, is he still wrong?
