Team Clinic: Habs are hurting big time

From The Gazette's Pat Hickey, at practice in Brossard:

• Carey Price did not practice today. He's not feeling well, and Hamilton's Marc Denis has been called up from Hamilton. This isn't to rule out Price in goal vs. Washington tomorrow. If Halak gets the call, it will be his third consecutive game.

• Saku Koivu will miss Saturday's game and probably Tuesday's in Carolina. He will see a doctor later today about what's suspected to be a foot injury suffered last night.

• Ben Maxwell has been recalled from the farm, and will play on a line with Andrei Kostitsyn and Matt D'Agostini, in Koivu's place.

• Christopher Higgins: still no word on whether he's seen a doctor, or how many times, but his arm has been in a sling for the past two days and he's expected to miss a week, at least.

• Georges Laraque did not practice, nursing a balky groin.

• Mathieu Dandenault will miss six to eight weeks. He had a triple fracture of his left forearm, and three hairline fractures.

• Mike Komisarek practised with the team.

it's a good thing we have that new training facility to speed up the recovery - hmmm, maybe they're getting hurt on purpose to spend more time in there!! ;)

Number31's picture
Eek... Well, no one is more frustrated than the guys sidelined by injuries that's for sure. But nice to see Maxwell get a chance. Actually probably a good fit for Koivu's spot. He wins many faceoffs too, which we haven't been doing much off lately. With the injuries also in Hamilton, I don't think they can really spare Lehoux right now. Wonder who's taking backup down there though, since last I heard Lacasse was also injured... And that's crazy about Dandy's arm! Geez!

Tom S.'s picture
*Queue the M*A*S*H Theme* You never want to have this many injuries but, this will be a good indicator as to where we stand in terms of overall organizational strength.

The Cat's picture
People, you shouldnt feel bad about the loss to Tampa, thats a very good team who has done all the right things in games except win. They really dont deserve to be last.

CHsam's picture
Thank goodness Gainey stocked up the farm team well over the last few years.

WindsorHab-10's picture
Time for everyone else to step up to the plate and start contributing. We've always bragged about depth, now it's time to show it. Still really pissed about last night's effort against the worst team in the NHL. 30+years being a Habs fan, this is by far the most frustrating team I've seen. So much talent and so little to show for it.

Gary320's picture
So I'm guessing late 90s and 2000 WERE SO AMAZING.. Please this is FAR from the most frustrating season in 30 years.

showey47's picture
no kidding, the reggie houle years were much, much worse. I believe if we had proper ownership and a competent g.m. back then we would be the detroit red wings of the east now. It takes a very long time to recover from so many years of lousy drafting and horrendous trades.

Gary320's picture
I agree, alot. Just think of the players we traded away, a little more patience, a little more youth and our last cup wouldnt have been in 1993. As for now, we are in a rebuilding stage and if the cup doesnt come now, it will come soon. I just wish the fans would stop sounding like spoiled kids who want everything right now.

Gormdog's picture
Stop complaining. You really find this more frustrating than watching Jan Bulis, Jonas Hoglund, Karl Dykhuis (so?), Nicklas Sundstrom et. al. desperate cling for a playoff spot for years and years and years? We deserved a much better team than we had during those years, something i find far more frustrating watching this current Habs roster filled with potential. Of course we will be an enigmatic team... We are supremely young, with an inexperienced "gut feeling" type of coach, with several key players (Kovalev, Markov, Akost) who an any given night can range from brutal to breathtaking. Get frustrated when we aren't sitting in the top tear of the NHL. Did you really think we were going to finish first or second overall? If you are not a Bruins fan, you are probably not happy with the team you are cheering for in the East. So lets put a little perspective on this, please, and be happy we have a great team with a SHOT at the cup.

brad.men5's picture
Yeah, it's most likely going to be the Tanguay-Lang-Kovalev line that will step up. They're going to be line #1. Okay Kovy, time for you to snap that streak! ________________________________________________________ Check out my blog: http://canadienscentral.blogspot.com/ Leave a comment, give me feedback. SlovakHab's picture
What about Yannick Lehoux? Would he not be a better call-up than Maxwell, as he's more experienced? I think we have quite many young players on the team now.. Or is it that waiver thing?

brad.men5's picture
I agree with you 100%. Maxwell is only in his first year with Hamilton meaning he has yet to play a full season with them. Lehoux on the other hand, has done so and is also apparently doing well in Hamilton. I'm a little skeptical with the choice to go with 20 year old Maxwell over some other possible choices... ________________________________________________________ Check out my blog: http://canadienscentral.blogspot.com/ Leave a comment, give me feedback. xm 204 reported that marc denis has been recalled also. Can anyone else veryify this? You figure it already would of been posted here too. I know in this article it says he is on "stand by". I'm pretty sure standy by means he is still in hamilton .

SlovakHab's picture
According to canadiens.com, Maxwell and Denis recalled. http://canadiens.nhl.com/team/app/?service=page&page=NewsPage&articleid=...

showey47's picture
gotta feel for chipper,he is having a real good year in hamilton so far. He would have finally got a shot with the koivu injury, but kyle is injured also. Its hard to tell what ben's offensive upside is considering he has been injured for half of the last 2 seasons. I do know that two years ago he was leading the whl in scoring before he got hurt. I did like what i saw from him in training camp. Is yanick lehoux under an ahl contract? I'm just wondering because he is leading the bulldogs in scoring and is a center but maxwell got the call up instead of yanick.

Chorske's picture
Watch this: Kovalev gets a goal per game until January. Remember last year when he was asked to step up and be captainly?

WindsorHab-10's picture
Don't have much faith in Kovalev. Getting tired of his once in a while good game and disappearing for a few. Can't replace Koivu. Plain & simple.

gumper's picture
Yeah, I guess it's hard to have faith in a guy who's talented, works hard every night, and is on track for a 70 pt. season.

100 points or gtfo, am I right?

coachdoug's picture
I say give him the C and then give him number 14 and 46 back on his line and the Cosmos should realign and all will be right with the world. Pleks is the Maestro and Carbo is making him play with the jug band...AK needs to be back with big daddy Kovy now that he has his confidence back.

Bugs's picture
Yessir, I do. Can't forget that he was playing as well BEFORE he was captainized too. Just got ADDED confidence from management and coaching. Hey, you KNOW I'm all for it, baby. He's still producin'. With the C on his shirt and all eyes on him? I'm all for it. Peace Out ______________________________________________________ Lord Bugs Potter, esq. Carbo said Maxwell would take Koivu's spot

SmartDog's picture
I would think Pleks would play in Koivu's spot if he's out. It only makes sense. ~Listen to the smart dog!

I can't read! Does this article have something to do with the Swiss National Team or Yannick Weber? ------------------- Individual records are nice to get, but before the season starts, you want to play to win the Stanley Cup! ~ Guy Lafleur

The good news? Higgins, Komisarek and Dandenault will be really fresh come playoff (or golf) time. That's good... innit?

Jrf27's picture
Maybe we'll see Captain Kovalev on Saturday

Any word on the Koivu injury? P.S. Leafs suck!

MGH isn't a psych hospital is it? just kidding

HabsFan2's picture
Nope, that would be the Dougie, but you knew that. I'm kidding, or am I!? Yeah, I am. Wait... ?? It's the Montreal General Hospital, for those that aren't in the 'loop'. ---------------------------------------------- I have come home." - Patrick Roy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zDMKoK1CSg&NR=1

2 issues with the habs that really bother me: 1) inconsistency, not being able to put together 2 good back to back games. like a Jekyll and Hyde team. Why can't this team get up for lousy teams? Pitt beat NY 9-2 last night. Do you think they took that team lightly? obviously not. If Pitt can do it, why can't our players? I just don't understand, neither does Carbo. 2) being SOFT. last night Lecavalier spears Pleks, and then cross checks another. Downie running over our goalie. on both counts not a single hab came to their rescue. How can you not stand up for your teammate? I'm totally frustrated with their attitudes. I never know which team will show up...drives me crazy!

Does anyone know how long a player has to be on LTIR for it to not count against the cap?

Kevin's picture
I believe that once a player is on LTIR, the salary does not count against the cap. LTIR has a minimum of 10 games / 28 days.

Bob Barker's picture
I'm interested to see what Maxwell can do. He's rated higher on hockey's future than D'agostini. Should be a fun line to watch. I hope saks not out too long though. First cause he's the heart of this team and second cause i picked him in my pool

Reefer64's picture
Regarding IR: 2 maybe. Don't quote me on that. One of the reporters (can't remember who) mentioned in the podcast a few weeks ago about us being really lucky with injuries and I said to myself, "Oh no, that was the jinx." And look where we are now, haha. Really sucks. I think we'll get through it though. It'll be nice to see Maxwell play. I'm looking forward to seeing him play, especially with D'Agostini. ----------------- Matt Bedard Matt@MaxSpeed.ca

just heard that HIGGINS WILL BE OUT AT LEAST 1 MONTH. very bad news.

good higgins will be back in time for him to have his bags packed, for the march4th trade deadline!

Harani's picture
Does Higgins actually do something for us to miss him that much? Koivu....I totally understand but Higgins?!?

Natrous's picture
Higgins brings an awesome work ethic and wears the 'A', but offensively he hasn't been a factor this year (or last for that matter). Give Maxwell a shot to see how he does!

Hockey Socks's picture
Well... he did post career highs last year.

boy from school's picture
i've always been a huge fan of christopher higgins, and i think that he brings alot to the table even if he isn't scoring. i'm not saying gainey SHOULD trade him, but i'm starting to see it as something that may be in the best interests of the hockey club long term.

rp25's picture
Hig is good along the boards and can usually get his passes on the tape ..More than I can say for other guys. Not the star we hoped he would be, but still contributing..

Maybe some posters will shut up about Carbo being stupid and not playing BGL?!? Maybe there are things going on that all you experts don't know. Go Habs Go!! "I can't hear what Jeremy(Roenick) is saying because my Stanley Cup rings are in my ears" - Patrick Roy Habsrule

Wow....rude? You haven't read many comments here, have you? What exactly offended you? the phrase "shut up"? If so, my apologies. I'll be sure to use "be quiet" from now on. If that's ok with you. Iv'e read 1000s of comments here and I agree that you're not the only one..How about..Sorry old chap ,but I respectfully disagree with your last comment ?

If you've read mine, I have preached politeness. In the post you are referring to, I didn't name names, or even reply to anyone. It was a general comment and request. Maxwell and not Chips? Maybe Chips has been written out of our plans? Gotta love "balky groin."

boy from school's picture
rds says kyle chipchura is injured, and if he weren't, he would have been the first centre called up.

b f s - Chips didn't dress in the last Bulldogs game.

notbigbird's picture
Thanks. I feel a bit better now.

Habsrule1's picture
To "replace" Koivu, they need to call up an offensive-minded player. Chips is a 4th liner...3rd at best. Go Habs Go!! "I can't hear what Jeremy(Roenick) is saying because my Stanley Cup rings are in my ears" - Patrick Roy Habsrule

When U take Cherry's place on coaches corner, show us that Tattoo so we will know it is U ok....LOL....

Your personal shots are childish. If I was as childish, I'd ask if the D in your nickname stands for D*ckhe*d. Sorry if I offended anyone, unless it's Big-D. It's a real tattoo. This might be a good thing and let some people step up. Washington has been playing with half an AHL team and they seem to be OK. And the balky groin saga continues...hows that big paycheck big George??? Cube is and always will be the real enforcer on the Habs anyway...

Interesting how useless laraque always has groin problems he hasn't played in a week what does he hurt it just walking...lose this guy he is dead useless weight that we don't need he does nothing on the ice bg deal he is big and can't be moved easy..he is also a pylon that get skated around and left in the dust with great ease... Nobody will fight him so he is a useless enforcer to have on your team you need a guy that can skate, shoot, mke plays at least one of those.. all laraque does is hurt his groin hmmmm to big and to slow and out of shape no other guy would be tolerated by you the fans just cause he's from montreal doesn't make him right for this team... take your home town blinders off and see the light... he is USELESS....

rp25's picture
Not useless..He gives our guys a little more room out there..

I sure hope Koivu is not out long. I am really looking forward to seeing Maxwell play a regular season game.

he's a pretty hard nosed kid from what I gather. With decent skills

how many players are we allowed to have on IR at once.

"Saku Koivu will miss Saturday's game and probably Tuesday's in Carolina. He will see a doctor later today about what's suspected to be a foot injury suffered last night." He sure did. As I was leaving my doctors office (Dr. Harvey), Saku was walking in. This was around 1:20. If it's his foot, then it's not that bad, as he was not limping in the slightest. And no, I didn't speak to him as he was talking on his cell at the time. I wanted to! ---------------------------------------------- I have come home." - Patrick Roy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zDMKoK1CSg&NR=1

Habsman1970's picture
Hehehe, I probably would have turned right back around and went back in to hang with him in the waiting room..!! Yeah..yeah.. I know, Saku wouldn't have to wait in the waiting room, but admit it, it would be cool to have a 30 min 'Questions & Answer' with him while listening to that gwad-awful waiting-room music..:) ONCE A HAB, FOREVER A HAB!!!

I had all my q&a running in my head. He was very nice and answered all my questions... in my head. ---------------------------------------------- I have come home." - Patrick Roy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zDMKoK1CSg&NR=1

YOU HAVE GIVEN ME HOPE!!! Let's pray its not a ligament or something inside his foot, that requires an operation.

HabsFan2's picture
Well he really looked fine. I thought he was just visiting at first, then I remembered he was hurt last night. I hope he just sprained it. Sprains can hurt like hell, but just needs some time to heal ---------------------------------------------- I have come home." - Patrick Roy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zDMKoK1CSg&NR=1

notbigbird's picture
Good news. Sprains can be bad and can take a long time to heal (I know this from experience), but if he's not limping on the day after, it can't be very bad.

Sakuismyhero's picture
the way that it looked on the replay they were showing on cbc looked like a sprain, maybe...but it kind of worries me they went all out to say he will miss Saturday and probably Tues...uck...

HabsFan2's picture
Depends on how badly sprained it is. I've had some nasty ones, they can take a couple of days, or they can last weeks. Depends on the individual. ---------------------------------------------- I have come home." - Patrick Roy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zDMKoK1CSg&NR=1

MAth 101 Koivu + Higgins + Dandenault + Komisarek = More money to give to Sundin Perfect

I'm saddened to see so many players hurt, but I truly can't wait to see Maxwell play, should be awesome. http://yourhabs.com - My Montreal Canadiens Blog

MAXWELL!!! alright. i really like that line. a lot of grit and talent, right there. this team doesn't look half bad. the beating they took from TB last night will make them work even harder against the Caps tomorrow night. (i'm praying for Price to be healthy. if not, i guess we'll see what Halak is really made of. he didn't like he was fighting the puck as much as his single game outings and looked even more confident last night. we'll need leaders to take this team on for tomorrow's game.)

stylez18's picture
its time for CAPTAIN KOVY to step it up!

depressed. but....no....I don't know...maybe no news is good news on Saku? Omg i can pray.

So BGL is nursing a Balky groin...hmmm... Balky from the island of Mypos (a la Perfect Strangers sit com) finally laying to rest the rumours that Big George is indeed bionic

SlovakHab's picture
We'll be OK, as long as all players give their 100% If the Caps could beat us with 8 missing players and with Theopendoor in nets, we can do the same to them. I'll rather have this line-up giving their best, than a full line-up with yesterday's effort. And look forward to seeing Maxwell wearing CH!

BIG-D's picture
It's Ok the Habs are fighters. This won't put a dent in the Habs little red wagon.....

Despite all the injuries is there any way we can put Lats back in the pressbox.....
