Canadiens legend Jean Béliveau is doing well after falling ill today, taken to a Montreal hospital after feeling ill while attending a funeral. Béliveau played 18 seasons for the Habs and won 10 Stanley Cups before retiring in 1971.

The official release from the Canadiens, issued a short while ago:

Jean Béliveau’s condition satisfactory
after feeling a sense of disquiet

MONTREAL (December 29, 2008) – Following a slight discomfort suffered earlier today, the Montreal Canadiens are pleased to announce that Mr. Jean Béliveau’s condition is fine and he is feeling much better.

Now 77 years old, the Canadiens legendary captain was attending the funeral of Father Paul Aquin, a longtime friend, when he suddenly felt uneasy due to a drop in blood pressure. Although his condition is not a cause for concern, he will undergo further tests as a precautionary measure.

Jean was on my mind most of the day yesterday. I was worried about what news the day would bring. I was surprised, and then again, not surprised that this seemed to concern me so much. I know almost every detail of Jean's glorious on ice career, though I've only seen him play three seasons, much of it lost to memory. It is in fact his second act, that of an ambassador for hockey, for the Canadiens as its vice president for longer than he played, and his generosity to a multitude of causes that have marked me more. He's the reason I'm a Habs fan since 1968 when I was 9 years old. Saw him in an exhibition game in Halifax against the Wings in 1969. Get well soon!

One if not the main reason why many of us here became Habs fans is Jean Beliveau. There's people with class and then there's Monsieur Beliveau. Get well soon Sir.

I'm far too young to have seen him play, but i did get the habs dvd set for xmas.. the first thing i watched was the 1960 cup win in Toronto.. I was blown away by the play of Jean Beliveau.. a smooth giant among the rest of the players. It's great to be able to watch some of his play to couple with my image of the great man in countless ceremonies and home games. Hope you are well, Mr. Beliveau.

Big Jean, the leader, has always been a gentle giant among men. He brings a warm and pleasant feeling to me every time i see him. But today when i saw him being loaded into the ambulance, I had a very large lump in my throat to swallow. Ian

Generally speaking, I could not care less when I hear about somebody famous that I never even met falls ill, it simply does not affect my life... but this hurts. I hope you get better soon Mr. Beliveau, the world needs role models like you. . . You leave me little notes on my pillow. Told you 158 times I can't stand little notes on my pillow. "We're all out of cornflakes. F.U." Took me three hours to figure out F.U. was Felix Unger!
