Tampa Bay's Evgeny Artyukhin hits Canadiens'
Alex Tanguay literally through the glass. The check ended the night of Tanguay, who left with a shoulder injury.

Canadiens' Maxim Lapierre and Alex Kovalev scored in the shootout and only Jussi Jokinen could solve Montreal goalie Carey Price to give the Habs a 2-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning.

It was the Canadiens' third straight victory since the Christmas break, with two days off now before the team heads back to New Jersey to wrap up a four-game road trip.

Jokinen beat Price with a deke to open the shootout, Kovalev beat Lightning goalie Mike Smith on the backhand, Price pad-saved on Vinnie Prospal then Lapierre scored a top-shelf beauty to put Montreal one up.

It came down to Lightning captain Vinnie Lecavalier, who Price stopped with his right pad to give the Habs the victory, their fifth shootout win of the season against four defeats.

Forgive Lapierre if he wanted to stay in Florida for a few more games – he was the hero on Monday night, scoring his first career hat trick, and head coach Guy Carbonneau played the hunch that Lapierre had a little more magic left in his stick for the shootout.

Prospal had gotten the Lightning on the board first at 13:18 of the first period, tipping home a goalmouth, power-play deflection past Price, Montreal defenceman Roman Hamrlik serving a minor for having high-sticked Tampa Bay's Martin St. Louis.

The simple work of getting the puck to the net at the 46-second mark of the third period finally pulled the Habs even, Guillaume Latendresse stuffing a backhand under Lightning goalie Mike Smith after some good work by Mike Komisarek, Lapierre and Tom Kostopoulos.

That certainly awoke the many Canadiens fans in the St. Pete Times Forum, who had nothing to cheer about as their heroes went 0-for-5 on the power play through the first two periods. Montreal ultimately went 0-for-6.

With less than 10 seconds to play in regulation, Andrei Kostitsyn burst in on Smith and rang one off the far goal post, that close to winning the game before overtime.

Both Price and Smith made electrifying saves in overtime to keep their teams alive, both clubs swarming the nets. The Canadiens had outshot their hosts 25-18 through 60 minutes, then 5-4 in overtime.

It was a short, painful night for Montreal forward Alex Tanguay, who left the game early in the first period with a shoulder injury. Tanguay was checked with such force into the corner boards by hulking Lightning winger Evgeny Artyukhin that a pane of plexiglass was knocked out of its braces and onto the ice, causing a delay of a few minutes.

Artyukhin was further involved in the first, this time fighting a game but outgunned Kostopoulos, who gave away nearly five inches and 55 pounds.

Montreal had gone 4-0-1 in its last five games, while the Lightning had won three straight.

The Canadiens returned home for a brief two-day New Year's break. They're scheduled to practice Thursday afternoon in Brossard before flying to New Jersey to play the Devils on Friday. A rare Saturday night off will be followed by a 2 p.m. Sunday matinée at the Bell Centre vs. the Florida Panthers.

Do you have a link to these comments by Tanguay complaining about his ice time? Chips really does deserve a shot with the big club and hopefully its coming soon. He's at the point in his development where he needs to play in the NHL to continue to progress as a player, as he has taken all from Hamilton that he can. We are not a club that is struggling to the point where we have to rush along our top prospects. When S.Kostitsyn was struggling earlier in the season, many complained that he was called up too soo and that it had messed up his development. Pacioretty needs to play in the AHL to learn the pro game at his own pace, he already ahead of where he was supposed to be. He is playing under a coach who is really good with young players, and teaching them the defensive side of the game. Guys like Komisarek, Plekanec, Boullion, Lapierre and A.Kostitsyn all spent time in the minors, and are all better players because of it. Breezer has been decent at both ends of the ice for us this season, and has brought leadership to our young team. He makes a good first pass, and hasn't been a liability on defence so far. Lapierre & Lats seem to being doing quite well together. If they continue playing like this on a semi-regular basis they could definitely be a good 3rd line pair for years to come. With Begin & Kostopoulos being your heart & energy 4th liners.

It's that time of the year again. The tabloid soothsayers and fortune-tellers are making their predictions for the year 2009. Doom and gloom for sure, and maybe even the Apocolypse! Well....just go back to this time last year, look up the predictions, and then check their scorecards. Likewise, here on HIO, posters are doing their rendition of the aforementioned future-seeing experts. This player is good as gone, if these guys don't all start scoring they're all gone, this guy is going back to Hamilton to stay, these guys won't be here come next summer, this player will be traded.....and the Boston Bruins will win the Stanley Cup! Like the record of the tabloid fortune-tellers, I have a feeling I know what these posters scorecards are going to look like this time next year. Happy New Year to all.

aw come on I get a couple things right now and then have a good new year yourself Mr. B

evgeny artyukhin was one of the surprises on the tampa team last night. He skate well for a 6'5 254lbs guy and he lays out monstrous hits...i think he might have the package to become a player similar to antropov.

O'Byrne and Maxwell sent down to the 'Dogs... RIGHT ON!

likehoy's picture
maxwell has been a major disappointment since coming up...he's far from NHL ready...and it's possible that pacioretty is further from being ready considering his goal count in the AHL.

24 Cups's picture
likehoy - I like Maxwell, he'll be back one day when he is ready. He had a few injuries in junior so you have to keep in mind that this guy really hasn't played much. He had only about 30 pro games in Hamilton before getting called up. Happy New Year, always nice chatting with you about our beloved Habs. Going For The Brass Ring - 25 Cups In 100 Years

likehoy's picture
yup i think he has the potential to be a good player, but he isn't currently ready. surprised me with how small he is though. happy new year to you too

habs-13's picture
I wouldn't call Maxwell a disappointment. Were you really expecting a guy who just came off two injury-filled seasons in the WHL to step in and tear up the league? He does need to mature physically, which is often the case with most young players, even Steven Stamkos. Maxwell was told by Carbo to focus on positional play as he was on the fourth line and shouldn't have felt the pressure to score every shift. He does need seasoning in the AHL before he can make a serious contribution in the NHL, but he's still playing in his first pro season. Give him a break! LOL "Hard work always beats talent, if talent doesn't work hard."

Good move for both players. Obyrne needs to get some confidence back and get some ice time, Maxwell got a taste of the NHL but needs time to fill out and polish up his game. We should see Koivu and Higgins back pretty soon or a trade is in the works.

Natrous's picture
I agree with you fully, and it seems to me that a trade is suddenly a possibility since Montreal only has 6 defencemen with the team as we speak. If Tanguay is out for the next game, doesn't that mean that Higgins and/or Koivu pretty much HAVE to be back for Friday's tilt vs Jersey?

likehoy's picture
or they could call someone else up such as chipchura, pacioretty, lehoux, so on and so forth.

I may be wrong but I dont think Lehoux has a contract with Montreal. He is a career minor leaguer signed to fill out the bulldogs roster. Most obvious call up at this point is Shawn Belle or Matt Carle. Ryan Flynn has an outside shot. Im betting Carle.

I think both Lehoux and Belle are on two ways. I don't know about waivers unless there is an injury situation. Maybe if the Habs are already short forwards and d-men when the injury is registered with the league they can come up and back with no problems.

likehoy's picture
i'd like to see carle...offensive dman that can help our PP...and he's known to be working hard on his allround game. they're probably showing him videos of brisebois and telling him "this is not who you want to model your game after"

Robert L's picture
http://canadiens.nhl.com/team/app/?service=page&page=NewsPage&articleid=... This could signify that Koivu is ready to come back, a trade is in the works, or players will be recalled prior to the Jersey game. An extra D-man at the NHL leevl is a must to carry. Gainey has time, patience and assets on his side. The current 6 man D has given up 2 goals or less in 10 of the last 13 games.

if Lats or SK don't produce, they're not staying, especially with Chipchurra and Pacioretty in the wings. face it, habs are adding Pac, Dags and Chips for the remjainder of the season. They will not go back down to Hamilton, and come summer there will be quite a few changes. anyone not scoring, is as good as gone!

habs-13's picture
First of all, Lats has been playing excellent hockey since being scratched and is scoring on a line with guys who aren't know for their offensive production. He's skating, hitting and going to the net. Secondly, Sergei too has been playing well since his return and has cut down on the penatlies. He showed he's capable of playing an offenive role when he replaced AK46 while he was out, and has done well on the fourtt line in a more defensive role. Sergei needs talented linemates to produce offence, as most offensive players do. With Tanguay out, I expect to see him fill out that line with Lang and D'Agostini, where he should the produce more offense. As for Pacioretty, I personally don't want to take the chance of ruining his development by calling him up too soon(like many thought of Sergei when he started to slump this year). Also, Pacioretty is by no means tearing up the AHL like Sergei was last year, so there is no needs to rush. I say we should let him develop in Hamilton under a coach who is great with young players. Guys like Komisarek, Higgins, Lapierre, A.Kostitsyn, Plekanec and D'Agostini all paid their dues in the minors, and are excellent players today becasue of it. Our team is in no way struggling to the point where we need to rush guys along, like Toronto with Schenn or Tampa with Stamkos. I agree with you that Chipchura is the guy down in Hamilton who deserves a shot with the big club. He's worked hard in the minors, and has played there long enough to understand the pro game. He's at the point where he has gained all he can from Hamilton and has to play int he NHL to continue his development. "Hard work always beats talent, if talent doesn't work hard."

Neither one of those two has been playing badly. Why would they be sent down?

Erm... I seem to recall Sergei doing a lot of work trying to cover for his linemates. He's also capable of breaking into the zone and when the other guys ain't in position took a shot at the net. Maxwell was shadowing well enough and generally bothering the other guys, but right now SK74 is on a defensive line and is playing a defensive game. If you want him to produce he'll need more productive linemates. I don't give a darn about the gaff the Panthers' night. Such is life. Gui! has been a good player starting December after slowly finding himself since the start of the season. He has really picked up his game and works well with Lapierre. I don't get all the rage the kids are getting... Let them play. OB might even make an appearance some day as well. ****** the notwithstanding clause - The general consensus of an ordinary Habs fan in Montreal

Xtrahabsfan's picture
Does anyone on this site watch the game's F.C.S.,I mean really the Lats ,Laps and nonstopulos line have constantly shined lately AND WE WOULD NOT OF WON LAST NIGHT WITHOUT Latendress peroid!

gainey drafted brothers for a reason. one day they will play together, perhaps next season when our team looks a lot different. SK is a work in progress and has major potential, i dont see him falling out of gaineys future plans. lats i think is pushing his luck, despite having a great game last night, its too far and few. hes been given many chances.

CrashTheNetCrashTheNet's picture
um...dude...I'm in love with your avatar.

SK74 was called up approximately one year ago. He has played in less than 100 games. He is a future star and is taking a normal amount of time to develop. Lets not throw him under the bus anytime soon. Lats has picked his game up immensely in the past few weeks and is developing some chemistry with Laps. The habs have no other wingers anywhere in the system with his size and he will continue to be developed with the long term goal of becoming a consistent 20 goal man with a physical presence. Changes in the off season will center around Koivu, Kovalev, Dandenault, Lang, Begin, Kostopolous and Tanguay. It is unlikely Gainey will sign more than three or four of the bunch to make room for players like Chipchura, Pacioretty, Maxwell, and Stewart.

A. Berke's picture
IMO, SK74 and Lats are here to stay, they're both young and are doing their job quite well thank you very much. I fully agree with the Big Bird (read below) on both these players. I agree with you on most the names that may be involved in a change with the exception of Koivu (unless his trade brings in a top 4 right shooting defenceman). Kovalev will be here for a year or two more just to give experience to the young players during their transition, besides his goals are a bit down but his play (esp defensive & PK) has been excellent, I wouldn't let him go anywhere). I would not trade Kosto simply because he's a very hard worker and that line's chemistry is not to be messed with right now, maybe at the end of the year. On the other hand, as much as most of us love him, Chris Higgins may be on the bubble though, save one game where he had a hattie, he couldn't fit well with any of the lines this year and his production has been well below of the expected level and he seems to get injured more often than usual and finally he's still highly regarded in the league and could bring a very favourable trade for us. After all, a trade for a top flight player (defenceman) will demand some good players and/or picks in return. Having made these trade predictions, I'm not fully convinced though that there will be one anytime soon. If I were a GM, I would be thinking ahead and try to get an idea on the money (read cap) situation for the next few years, and not spent lavish money that may not be around. Bonne et Heureuse Annee pour tout. Cheers, Ali B.

habs review of 2008: price is becoming the go to number one man dumping this two goalie system weve had the following years.price should be played like brodeur has been, its his team, we'll only go as far as carey carrys us.latley the price is great. the plumbers are stepping it up and playing hard trying to shake the fact the habs are a soft team to play against.ok were not quite there on that front yet but lappierre, kostoppy and begin are playing hard.lats has got to join that club and stop thinking hes a power forward (with no power).big george has been a total wash out, waste of money, mostly do to his injurys i guess. the forwards still struggle getting goals, plek hit the ditch along with coastalev for a stretch, but theyve been put back on the tracks as of late.koveys our leader, he needs to wake up and realize its time to earn those astronomical bux and lead by example giving his all and in doing so lift the other forwards up wih him. habs special teams still suck, penalty killing is getting a bit better thats part of the reason were winning latley. power play... well thats got to improve if were gunna go deep into the playoffs. carbo's line shaking we all shook our heads at but he's got a method to his madness. carbo is a players coach but must be a bit harder on his team after bad mistakes and losses, like early morning skates insted of days off. outlook: looks good.too many injurys but thats uncontrolable and we deff have the depth, the younger players on the farm are chomping at the bit to come in and prove themselves, like dags. curious to see what max-pac will do. prediction: habs finish 2nd in the eastern conference at seasons end.behind the beantown bums. habs take bruins in 7 hard games to win the east.hab vs sharks in the final , habs go 6 games and WIN THERE 25TH STANLEY CUP !! go habs go!!!!!

anybody have any ideas on who the habs will let go or keep at the end of the season? I personally think Kovalev, SK, Lang, Lats, Breezer, Begin are leaving. Maybe Halak and Tanguay will be traded. I guess it will depend also on what happens at the trade deadline. we'll see.

The LaBarbera trade (7th round pick to L.A.) last night gives me reason to believe that Halak's trade value is not high. Market is saturated with goalies. Therefore, Halak stays. I have said this many times on here before but I think that we need a pure sniper and a solid D. The reality is that there are no great centres with size out on the market. Does a trade for a Jason Arnott in exchange for some of our top prospects really make sense? I say no! At centre we are forced to stick with strength in numbers...Koivu, Plekanec, Lang, Lapierre, Chipchura, and Maxwell. In a real jam S.Kostitsyn, Higgins, Begin and Kovalev can play centre. With the UFA's we have this summer I think that unless both Koivu or Kovalev take less money to stay, one will be gone. This is why I think that Gainey is targeting either Boumeester or Kovalchuk. Kovalchuk makes the most sense because he is under contract til 2010 and our minor league system is loaded with D.

Big Bird's picture
Why would we let Latendresse and SK go at the end of the season? They are both young players who are under 23 years of age just coming of age. Unless they get traded but I think that would be a mistake. Not sure why we would trade Halak either unless he asks for a trade. If Price goes down with an injury we need an able back-up. For Kovalev to stay, I think that depends on what the team offers him, how he does in the playoffs and what we can resign Koivu and Komisarek for. I suspect Dandenault and Kostopolous are gone. Perhaps Laraque as well (buyout) if he doesn't improve his health. Unsure about Tanguay as well. Begin might be back if he continues to play like he has. The good news is that there are lots of young prospects ready to come up like Chipchura, Pacioretty and others to fill in the gaps.

The Cat's picture
You know I think Kovalev should retire as a hab...Lang and Tanguay will go. Halak should go as well.

at the end of the season..... Tanguay: if he doesn't produce in playoffs it's bye bye baby Breezer: depends if we have a replacement, I've given up predicting his exit Dandenault: Gone? unless he signs for 1 million per. Halak: staying SK: staying Lang": bye bye Lats: staying Begin: who knows.....love him, but... My suggested overtime format and other sports talk

Kovalev will be re-signed too ... question is how much and for how long? This has to be the final year for Breezer. Yes he is a suitable fill-in and provides leadership/experience, but his presence stunts the development of our defensemen prospects. Time to go. I think The Cube will be gone too. He'll get more on the Free agent market than what Bob will be willing to pay. Tom the Bomb should be resigned for a similar contract to what he has now. Higgy and Plekanec will both be back and should be had for a discount based on their respective performances so far this year. Good thing they weren't RFAs after last year!!! Next year will be time for some more of the young guys to get their shot ... Dagger, Chips and Pac-man will all be on the team. Will Stewart make the checking line to replace Begin?? I think so. The defense will look a little different next year with some young guys getting a chance to fill the 6th & 7th holes. It certainly hasn't hurt San Jose or Pittsburgh to give young d-men regular ice time in their lineups.

24 Cups's picture
x - I don't know if there will be any hometown discounts. That's us talking as fans, player agents will be singing a different tune. The history of the lockout teaches us that teams keep handing out over the top contracts regardless of circumstance or performance. Higins and Pleks are both RFAs so that will have a bearing, as well. Personally, I think it's a waste of time to speculate on who is going to come back. We'll see how guys play in the playoffs, then look at what they might re-sign for, whether it be short term or long term. The club will also have to consider whether it wants to make another run at the Cup next year or re-tool for further down the road. There is no use chasing the Cup with a team that has the same drawbacks and liabilities year after year. We must also leave cap space for Price in 2010. Happy New Year Habs fans! I was at the last two games in FLA and you would think they were home games. A few comments and random thoughts: - On Thursday, I stayed at the hotel that the team was in. I saw Bob and he is one classy guy! Hats off to Bob! - Koivu and GL didn't accompany the team. - The PP continues to struggle. They are missing the shot from the point that they had the past two seasons and they are not gaining and taking control of the zone with the man advantage. Very seldom do they use the play of getting the pass through the crease with Markov sneaking in from the point or a player being right there (a la Eric Stall PP goal or the NJ O/T winner earlier this year at the Bell Centre). - Hats off to TK for taking on somone 5 inches and 50lbs greater than him! - I'm hoping that the 46-27-14 lines stays together. - Considering our injuries and having virtually all our second line on the DL (11-21-13), I think we are doing okay. - Is Shannahan still available? I think he could help the PP and shootout game. I would think we would still have the cap space for him seeing as he's looking work. - I think we are one D-man and one 'impact' player away from a solid run. Happy New Year Habs fans!

TSN's report on Tanguay-"questionable for Friday's game against New Jersey upper body" not bad for being put through the glass

Some observations: If you told me during training camp that we would sustain injuries to the long list of impact players even before the break I would have sold my soul for 40 points. Super depth and good coaching here and in Hamilton IMO. Price is now giving them the feeling that the puck is not going to go in. This gives a team the confidence to push more offensively - look out! They are battling for each other Brisebois looked like a goon last night at one point running Smith! I am sure all of us collectively yelled "ya Breezer!" at the tv and toasted him with their pint! (Honourable mention to Pleks take down against Fla.) Tanguay out finally changes that line (the only positive to that situation)- don't know why, but dont like the combo. Laps has grown hands to go along with his speed and hard work....not to mention he is a pain to play against...wow is all I can say...hope it continues! Please change the shopping list to Chips rather than Maxwell house now that Chipchura is healthy again. Ladies and Gentlemen - I believe we have a TEAM. I've noticed the last two games how the Habs have been sticking up for each other, even if it means having to take a penalty to show the opposition that you can't take liberties with any Hab. Plecks the last picking up for Price in the crease, Tommy K and Steve Begin this game. Lots of scrums after the whistle... sends a message that this group is tight. I like that. The quote from Carboneau's Christmas Carol "then take the penalty!" rang very true with me when I read it. (if you haven't read that piece, do yourself a favour). I think the entire club read that story! We are seeing the consistency we have been looking for. Not dominating wins by any means, but solid hard work and consistent effort from every line. Could it be that the boys from last season are back?

Be honest - who else was questioning hte pick of Lapierre and Latandreesse for the SO??? I am heading from New York to the game Sunday afternoon. Anyone have a suggestion for a hotel? We could see things such as "I resolve to stop criticizing Lats" or "I resolve to start reading more Habs books". Knowing the personalities in here, it would be good for a few laughs.

I resolve to not let moronic posts bother me *as much*. Unfortunately, I don't think I'm capable of ignoring them altogether.

That's a hard one, eh? Maybe if someone were stop ignoring moronic posts, things would balance out. :)

i see some slathering over r2kin here. the hulking 76 has impressive hops for a guy that big. true, he would add the size up front we could still use more of. BUT ... what the habs need more is a slick-skating d-man to qb the powerplay and make that first homerun pass out of our zone. that guy was ranger (54) last night. i like him everytime i see him play. habs looked great, though, playing 2nd of a back-to-back nights on the road against a team that came out hammering them.
