Because you asked: Habs hat-trick history

For those wondering when the last time was the Canadiens had back-to-back hat-trick games, as they've just had with Andrei Kostitsyn and Maxim Lapierre, here's a little help.

Below you'll find four pages from the Canadiens' 2008-09 media guide, a masterpiece by our friend Carl Lavigne, the team's manager of history and archives. You'll have to figure for yourself when consecutive games featured Canadiens hat tricks, but this is fun reading.

All that's missing from the pages below is the Feb. 29, 2008 four-point hat-trick night of Tomas Plekanec vs. Buffalo, and this season's Kostitsyn and Lapierre games. Enjoy!

Carey Price needs to work out more. He's more fragile than the Rocket was in his first two seasons. http://dennis-kane.com/

Speaking of the Habs media guides, I checked in at the boutique and it costs $20.00CDN. WOW!!! What a markup from last season where it was priced at $12.00CDN. I don't understand why the steep increase in price. I've been collecting Habs media guides since 1960 and in the past 15 years, nothing has really changed in the guides except a few colour pics here and there. "We will win the Cup only with Carey Price in the nets"

In defense of Carl and the people who put together the guide, and as someone who is only missing four guides for the complete set, this year's media guide is about a third bigger than last year's edition. In addition, there is much more information added about the team's history, from year to year, including a detailed synopsis of each season in the club's 100 year history. Having just glanced through the guide, which I've just received, I think that I can safely say that this is the best and most comprehensive guide the team has ever put out. Sometimes big isn't better. Yes, it is a third bigger but that does not justify the price being skyrocketed to $20.00 CDN. Kudos to everyone involved in producing the media guide but to me, it's the same blah format in general besides the so called Centennial tidbits. Toronto produces an excellent media guide that when you flip it, it gives you the media guide information of the Toronto Marlies, their AHL affiliation. The best of both worlds. There came a time when I could buy 5 or 6 Habs media guides at $10.00 a piece and give them out for gifts to my family and friends. I can't do this anymore since it adds up being quite expensive. I'd like to know if next years edition will be one third less and if the price will remain at $20.00 CDN? I'll have to surf the net on eBay to see if I can bid and win one cheaper but I have yet to see even one listed from this year. "We will win the Cup only with Carey Price in the nets"

Missing hat tricks? Keep in mind that many more are recorded separately in Carl's media guide, in the Playoffs section. Dave Stubbs

Stubbs, did you get my e-mail about the tennis balls?

I just returned home from the Bell Centre. I brought my two girls to see High School Musical. I was hoping to buy the Habs media guide that Dave used for this post but the Canadiens store was closed. It wasn't until I was on the way home that I realized a newer bigger store had opened. I walked around outside a bit, a the four statues were freezing! Cold enough to freeze the balls of a brass monkey, never mind a brass Rocket!

Most wasted hat trick I nominate Ryder's in our last regular season game April 7, 2007 vs Leafs. Could've been in the playoffs that year. That one stung real bad.

Ryder hat a hatty in that glorious comeback against the Gers last year...

Corporate's picture
I am not 100% on this but Ryder had 2 goals and an assist. Streit got the last one... Initially though, he did have the hat trick and then revised. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Koivu for Prime Minister...

Vid's picture
I remember that. Ryder's shot deflected off of Streit's leg. I thought that would be the turning point for Ryder's season but alas it wasn't.

Does that make it a Visor trick?

How come Eric Desjardin's overtime winning hat-trick in game two of the 1993 Stanley Cup Finals (June 3, 1993) isn't listed? It was a pretty important one.

Ed's picture
You would think that all playoff hat tricks would be included, especially one like Desjardins'. I wonder how many playoff hat tricks there have been in the history of the franchise.

Given that I can see no hat trick later than April 17th, the list is probably just limited to regular season. That's my guess, anyway. _____________________________________ "Deserves" got nothin' to do with it.

NOT KOIVU

A few neat facts: Some have asked if we've had hatties in consecutive games before. I think Claude Larose did it by himself in 74. He scored a trick on Feb 26 in Atlanta followed by another on Feb 28 at the Forum against Pittsburgh. I doubt the Habs played a game on the 27th. Individual facts: Most hatties, career: some guy named Maurice Richard with 26. Most hatties, single season: some guy named Howie Morenz (all hail the Streak!). Particularly impressive since he did it in a 44 game season. Consecutive hatties: That Richard fellow again - 5 consecutive hat tricks over two seasons (Feb 44 to Dec. 44). By consecutive, I don't mean consecutive games, I mean no other Hab scored one during that stretch. Hatties in the same game: Habs have had two players get hatties in the same game 9 times. The list follows: 1. Alfred Lepine/Howie Morenz: 22/02/30 NY Americans 9-2 2. Bert Olmstead/Maurice Richard: 10/03/51 Chicago 12-2 3. Paul Meger/Mauric Richard: 12/01/52 Chicago 8-3 4. Bernard Geoffrion/Jean Beliveau: 18/12/52 NYR 6-2 5. Bert Olmstead/Ken Mosdell: 09/01/54 Chicago 12-1 6. Bernard Geoffrion/Maurice Richard: 20/12/55 Chicago 7-1 7. Dickie Moore/Maurice Richard: 13/10/57 Detroit 6-0 8. Bernard Geoffrion/Dickie Moore: 15/10/60 NYR 8-4 9. Ralph Backstrom/Robert Rousseau: 20/11/65 NYR 9-3 Team Most hatties, season: 9 - the 71-72 Habs and the 27-28 Habs. This last was particularly impressive since it happened in a 44 game season. Interestingly, if you look at league records, Habs are nowhere to be found. The career hat trick list: 50 - Wayne Gretzky 40 - Mario Lemieux 39 - Mike Bossy 33 - Brett Hull 32 - Phil Esposito The single season list: 10 - Wayne Gretzky 9 - Mike Bossy 8 - Brett Hull 7 - Joe Malone (the only Hab) 7 - Phil Esposito 7 - Rick Martin 7 - Alex Mogilny Howie Morenz's 5 hat tricks in a 44 game season compares favourably with Gretzky's 10 in an 80 game season. _____________________________________ "Deserves" got nothin' to do with it.

Looking at the stat pages got me off on a tangent looking at how this year stacks up so far against other years. To normalize the number of games played changing from year to year, i calculated the percent of total available points that the Habs earned. A couple of interesting things; First, this year at 65.7% is 2nd best since 81-82, the two most recent Stanley's were only 60.7% & 54.4% (yes, Roy really did steal them!). The highest percentage and thus best season ever was not 76-77 (82.5%) but 43-44 at 83.0%! And finally, the 5 in a row in 55-60 had a cumulative 65.9% vs. the 4 in a row 75-79 was an incredable 78.6%! It's hard to compare era's but the current Habs are winning at the same level as the 55-60 Stanley Cup Champs! I'm sure the extra point for OT losses help that out but still, it says we are finally back to contenders.

Odelein had a hatty! That's great!

Hey, Dave, don't forget Chris Higgins's hatty, the first of this season. _____________________________________ "Deserves" got nothin' to do with it.

UHMMMMMMM Ryder had the only Hat Trick in 06-07 out of the stars on that team. Go figure.

Yeah, I remember that night. He scored that hat trick in the last game of the season when the Toronto Make-Believes came back in the 3rd period to beat us and keep us out of the play-offs. I dunno. I felt a little cynical about him potting 3 goals in the last game of the season to edge his total to 30 for the year, ensuring him a fat contract that summer. He seems like a good guy, and I wish him all the success in the world, but I don't miss him. (I'll probably eat my words come play-off time) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sDOW6KofuLo

I agree with your cynicism, it seems pretty self-serving to score three straight in a must win game to stake your team to a 4-3 lead. :)

TommyB's picture
I always thought he was showcasing himself to Fergie Junior. You know, "hey Fergie, look at me....pick me up this summer!"

And who can forget that Ryder give-away that led to the overtime goal that sank us in the playoffs the year before? Whenever he started stick handling, I would experience loose bowl syndrome... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sDOW6KofuLo

Back to back games.. how about 2 in the same game? Dickie Moore and Rocket Richard - 13/10/57 - against Detroit

Lafleur had 50 goals in 79-80 with ZERO hat tricks. Talk about consistency...

Vinnie Damphousse had 7 truques in my count. Pretty impressive.

5 October hat tricks for Brian Savage. 2 months of the year, I really miss that guy.

ah yes.. good ol' chandler bing.. i miss him too.

I noticed that too. 2 hats within a week in Oct/99. And they call Reggie Jackson Mr. October?

Ralfe Backstrom had 5 or 6 goals in Toronto one night, but i did not see that one listed. And I remember Bobby Rousseau very well. Fantastic hockey player.

TC's picture
Ian, are you sure you're not getting it mixed up with Backstrom's five point game (which included a hat trick) against the Black Hawks on November 23rd, 1967 ?? Backstrom had three other hat tricks during his Habs career, but none against the Leafs (Boston March 21st, 1965, New York November 20th, 1965, and Philadelphia January 2nd, 1970). Now Bobby Rousseau had a five goal game on January 2nd, 1964 but that was against Detroit. T.C. tc.denault@habsworld.net

Maybe i'm wrong about that. That's the first time I've been wrong, now I know what it finally feels like.!!

My first live game was October 29, 1977. Lafleur has all three Habs goals, and Dionne had three for L.A. A 5-3 loss.

My rough count had Jean Beliveau at 18 hat tricks. What a statement about this great man. Going For The Brass Ring - 25 Cups In 100 Years

Yeah, I'm pretty sure Vinny Damphousse scored a hat trick against the Blackhawks in 1993. It was the one and only game I ever got to see at the Forum. Vinny got a hat trick and Michel Goulet had to be carried off on a stretcher after going head first into the boards. Funny what you remember vividly as an 11 year old...

Robert L's picture
Hard to say if there were games played between the dates, but Denis Savard, Stephan Lebeau, and Brent Gilchrist had tricks in February of 1992, on the 10th, 12th, and 17th. Could it have been three games staright? Gilbert Dionne added another on the 26th. Claude Larose had back to backs on February 26 and 28, 1974. The second game he got 4!

That was great to view all the great goal scorers from the past. But did you notice that the last bunch of years how multy goal scorers have dropped off the radar screen. And that the last multy year hat trick artist was Ryder alone. Kenny Mosdell, Floyd Busher Curry, and Bert Olmstead were some of my hero's in the day.
