Canadiens general manager Bob Gainey announced this afternoon the acquisition of defenceman T.J. Kemp (left) from the Pittsburgh Penguins, in return for a conditional seventh-round pick in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. Kemp will join the AHL’s Hamilton Bulldogs.

Kemp, 27, scored nine points (1 goal, 8 assists), served 22 penalty minutes and posted a plus-5 rating in 22 games this season with the AHL’s Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. Since 2005-06, the 5-foot-11, 197-pound blueliner registered 93 points (14 goals, 79 assists) with 126 penalty minutes in 174 career regular season games in the AHL.

A native a Pickering, Ont., Kemp was a member of the Canadian AHL All-Stars at the 2007 AHL All-Star Game.

Both Kemp and Gainey scored in the Bulldogs 4-2 win over the Philly Phantoms :) Actually, Gainey had the game winning goal while Kemp shot the insurance marker. Nice welcome to the team, eh?

Gainey what every you do dont fire Carbo

Gentlemen (lol) When Koivu, Higgins, Laraque, Dandenault and Tanguay get healthy, something has to give. Gainey cannot just send 5 bodies back to Hamilton - it isn't a player warehouse, it's a hockey team. My sources say expect something(?) just after the All-Star Break

longtimehabsfan's picture
Like?

who are these alleged sources? just kidding - i'd expect a trade for a top 4 dman. while our defense is good it's not great. after komi, hammer and markov there is a drop off. i do like georges and cube but they are not currently top 4 material.

longtimehabsfan's picture
Big fing deal.

I don't see the point in keeping Weber up here if he is not playing. He needs to be playing Hockey send him back down so he can play.

Does anyone know if I can get a legit copy of Sunday's game? I tried NHL.com but that site always crashes my computer. Any ideas? Thanks!

The Cat's picture
Same here, ever since they changed the site, its almost unusable on my computer, my computer is old though.

i'm not sure it it just requires a better computer or what - when i do get to navigate the site i don;t really like it - i guess you just have to get comfortable with it..... too many sites now load with video, etc and it just bogs things down. anyway - would still like to get a copy of the came because it was the only time i have been in montreal for a game and with my kids i know i missed some stuff. i did take lots of pictures and i took a camera video of the entire shootout which was cool but it's not exactly good quality....

Not sure if we are allowed to post links to torrent sites so delete this if it's illegal: http://www.nhltorrents.co.uk/ has two versions of the game (one english, one french) Just need to register and start the torrent and let the download happen!

Since everyone has the answer to improve the habs, i might as well add my 2 cents worth. I think if all of the current habs were to play every game according to their ability, the team would be just fine, however, thats not the case-- inconsistent is the problem, not everyone having a good game at the same time. Why ? who knows! For example, remember when Dags came up about a month ago, he was very creative and skated very very well, now after a month under Carbo, he is gradually disappearing, and soon, he will be like Ryder, ending up in the press box. Those offensive type players have to be able to let loose and play their game, not put under a blanket and force to play like Carbo did. 10 to 15 goals per season isnt enough for offensive players.

The Cat's picture
Good post. Youre right. I do believe Carbo's system is the best one to win, but it doesnt match with the players in place. We should be dressing players similar to Brian Skrundland, Mike McPhee etc, because at some point you need team toughness to get you over the top. And we clearly dont have team toughness. Thats why I always say not to bother getting the goal scorers via trades, theyre only going to get worse playing in Montreal.

i'm very excited about this season just for hte reasons you state - can the likes of tanguay and kovy change their game a bit to play tougher but still produce. a little change here and there and the habs have a great shot for success. first things first - fix the PP. once more PP goals come success will be even greater.

The Cat's picture
The PP is too essential for us, teams playing against us have to be afraid of our PP, if theyre not, they wont be afraid to rough it up as they know we arent that tough.

i agree - not sure why the PP is terrible this year.... even middle of the pack would be good right now. it does seem team play a very agressive style against the Habs PP unit - that being the case it should open up some opportunities after 1 or 2 quick passes. but as it was pointed out yesterday i think most importantly is getting into the zone and setting up... there seems to be a lot of confusion between the blue lines when we have the puck... dump in or skate in is the questions and each hab needs to know the answer.

showey47's picture
yet we were the highest scoring team in the league last year and had the best powerplay in 2 consecutive years because carbo threw a blanket over them? Are you serious? Don't you remember guys like pleky and ak 46 who had career years last year under carbo.Don't forget the great seasons by streit, koivu, markov and kovalev. On this site it's so easy to tell who has played hockey before and who got their hockey knowledge from playing "blades of steel" by just reading their posts. You do know we are 4th in the league in 5 on 5 play don't you? Everthing problem we have as a team starts and ends with the struggling powerplay.

Yeah like you're starting in the show this year dude.

Jannik Hansen, get that Mats Sundin voodoo doll ready.... http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=262062&lid=headline&lpos=topStory_nhl This has got to suck for Hansen - he earned a roster spot and has a decent 17 points in 37 games in his first full year in the league, and is sent down to make room for a guy who waited and waited and waited, and finally selected to play for the Canucks.

Rugger's picture
Good point, so who would we have sent down if Sundin arrived here?

JRock's picture
Any word on Laraque? Want to see him healthy here on in... and Koivu? I didn't think he would be out this long either.

Yea he pulled a hamstring when Lucic Nailed him in the corner & thats why he stopped chasing him

xaverian001's picture
Burke used to work for Bettman as the chief disciplinarian for the league. By the way, Gainey is TOO GOOD to sit with those goofs.

The Cat's picture
Bettman or Burke? Which do I dislike the most, now thats a tough one...

off topic but how good is josh gorges? he's plus 16 so far!

and was logging top pairing ice time when Komo was out!!

agree - he's like a little secret. i' dlike a little more offense from him as it seems he has the ability. . . but i'll take the huge +/-

Is Carey Price ready to play Wednesday or is he still on the shelf? I saw on TSN that Koivu has resumed skating, he looked pretty good taking turns and stops and starts.

great win by the boys tonight !! ... ok i have to say this .. i think PK Subban is a great kid has lots of flair when he plays BUT .. he really needs to focus on his defence to many times he is caught poke checking blindly and gets caught ... its a good thing he has great speed and agility as it seems to bail him out sometimes ... but damn PK take the man sometimes instead of going for the puck. Other then that..... this guy is going to be golden. He proved that this tourney by playing his game and bacame team canada's best d-man. ...... love how tsn is in the pk subban wagon

Gr8stFranchizEvr's picture
funny... that sounded like a Brisebois description!

justintime's picture
Yeah, but the Breezer can't skate! The Subbanator has wheels! Plus, he's still young enough to learn how to play D in the NHL. Congrats to him and the whole team on the 5th straight Gold Medal for Canada!

This might have already been said, but some of the "reputable" people in the business suggested that Gainey was in the market for Sergei Zubov, but then he went down with injury, so that blew that away. Now those same people are saying Scott Niedermeyer is "Plan B" because the Ducks are supposedly in a "sell off" mode and it's the last year of SN27's contract. I HIGHLY doubt that would EVER happen... My guess is that these people heard Gainey was in the market for a d-man, and then spun up the rumour mill. So in the end, while they were right, they were just off on the calibre. http://habsbros.blogspot.com/

Ya know, if this guy suited up for the under-20 swedes tonight, they would have won!

gumper's picture
On a different topic, anyone else thinking maybe Denis should get the start on Wed.?

Bugs's picture
No. You come back with NHLer who got a shutout in the shootout. Not the AHLer who flounders like a fish and needs Gorges to help him make his best save of the period he plays. Halak. He's gonna rebound. He's got character and we KNOW he's got the talent. Peace Out ______________________________________________________ Lord Bugs Potter, esq. Cracks me up that people are suspecting that there is anything more than just a need for some d on the farm. Fact is that the only reason this is causing speculation is because we have a forum and there was a post about it: without the web this would be in the fine point on the transactions page and no one would take a moment to think about it. Amazing what a group of fanatics we are!

Happy Birthday Dude !!

the Kemp trade is just for depth in Hamilton - Wyman and St Denis have been moved to Cincinnati - Weber up with the big club - so the Dogs are down 3 d-men An interesting sidebar is that the Dogs have also signed Steve Gainey to a tryout... all the details on the Dogs site http://www.hamiltonbulldogs.com/article/montreal-acquires-t-j-kemp-from-...

Kaptain K's picture
Why is everyone calling for a HUGE trade? we have a goood team. We're winning games, and sure they might not blowouts like most of us are hoping for, yeah they are tighter than should be, but that means they are exciting. We actually have a team to watch, unlike the Bruins or the Sharks who just blow away the other teams.. noone likes a blowout. We are 5th in the league.. out of 30 TEAMS!, thats pretty good.. i dont want a trade, we have a good team just lacking alot of chemistry. Lets give them a chance to get some.

LeGrosBill's picture
I agree 100%. I'd rather not jeopardise losing potential significant future contributors for a rental player. Do we really need another free agent in the off-season?

showey47's picture
the problem is we have too many of them and they all can't play for us.The one down fall of having too many good prospects.

LeGrosBill's picture
The fact that we have too many free agents has nothing to do with the number of prospects we have. The problem is that we won't have enough money under the cap to pay them all.

nobody likes a blowout? you sound like you're jealous of the bruins, and well you should be.

PROBABLY SOMETHING BREWING, AND KEMP IS GOING TO FILL A SPOT, WHEN WE TRADE O'BYRNE FOR A BUCKET OF PUCKS AND CHRISTI BRINKLEY POSTER habs rule, leafs drool

yathehabsrule's picture
I think he's just there to fill roster space in Hamilton. That could be good news for Weber as maybe they want to keep him in Montreal to fill Dandeneault's role and be used up front and on the point. It could also be a small personnel move to make a bigger deal...You never know with Mr. Gainey

Blitzen's picture
I agree with the poster who said the point shot isn't the only problem with the PP. How long will they keep Jarvis? I mean other teams have clearly adjusted to our PP but we keep doing the same thing over and over and over again. I can't see it fixing itself if we don't switch strategy. _____________________________________________________ Mad Pax...Beyond Powerdome

yathehabsrule's picture
Jarvis wasn't on your holiday card list now, was he?

showey47's picture
lmao, yup definatley jarvis' fault, must be the guy who coached the #1 pp two years in a row before this year. Not the guys who fail to execute on the ice by getting pucks on goal or willing to stand in front on the net.

same PP for the third year running. they caught on while Souray was on the point. then they caught on to Kovalev on the wall. it's time Jarvis started thinking a new thing for the PP.

Blitzen's picture
The fact of the matter is that teams adjusted to our PP during last year's playoffs and we haven't made any changes to defeat these adjustments. If they were obviously trying different schemes and they weren't working, then you would at least see that they are working on things. The way it is now, it just seems like they're hoping adjustments made by other teams will simply go away. Of course the players have to play but if the system they are being asked to play in is broken and no new scheme is put in place, then that is on the coach. _____________________________________________________ Mad Pax...Beyond Powerdome

showey47's picture
This may sound crazy but this is not the nfl where coaches carry a 500 page book of offensive plays. How many different types of powerplay formations do you think really exists? Really there is 2, standard and umbrella formation. There are only 2 ways you can access the zone, either dump it in or gain the blueline and set up. You can't teach offence, its all about creativity and execution.

Pay Julay's picture
I disagree, Canada looked pretty good playing that 1-3-1 formation that Guy Bouchier thought up, why not give that a shot...

Three formations. You forgot the O'Byrne off the Boards.

The fact of the matter is that Gainey is bored and is just goofing on all of us!

My only comment is WHAT.... THE.... ........

Glad I'm not all alone barking at the Moon on this one!

G-Man's picture
This is not the beginning of something more. This is a depth move for the Dogs, that's all. Remember,Weber hasn't played a second at the NHL level and who would you sit to play him? Now, everyone's going to to jump and say Breezer, but it is that easy, really? Has the Breezer played so god awful that he should retire immediately? No. Time will fix the PP, not a "strong shot from the point." That shot has to make it through waaay more traffic now than in the old days when Carbo and Gainey were among the few blocking shots. Getting one through takes more experience than Weber has. Besides, he has enough pressure on him without asking him to save the Habs PP all by himself. Gilbert 2008/09 is the season of the Habs

swisshockey's picture
I suppose they could send Yannick Weber (who hasn't played yet either) back down to Hamilton. But is this guy really an improvement over Web? _________________________ Everything you wanted to know about Swiss hockey but were afraid to ask. Or something. Follow me on Twitter.

showey47's picture
i'm not really sure why weber is even called up since he hasn't even played. He could of stayed in hamilton and played 3 or 4 games instead. One theory could be that there is a trade breweing which involves him and they don't want him to play in hamilton or montreal in case he gets hurt.Theory #2 is he is up to adjust to practices at the nhl level and practice with the powerplay in case he is put in the lineup. Number 2 seems to make more sense, but who knows.

howtathor's picture
He played for Peter Deboer last year in Kitchener. Maybe he is part of a deal for Bouwmeester in Florida.

Chorske's picture
He doesn't need to be an improvement over Web. He's a warm body who can put up points and stays in the pluses. Sounds like an acceptable spare part to me.

Pens add Another Defenseman T.J. Kemp T.J. Kemp If the Pittsburgh Penguins didn’t have enough defensemen already, they made sure to increase their depth at the position by signing T.J. Kemp to a two-way contract (Faceoff-Factor). Kemp spent last year in the AHL with the Springfield Falcons, associated with the Edmonton Oilers franchise. Kemp played 73 games for the Falcons (Hockey DB) and accumulated 46 points (8 G, 38 A). He is returning back to the western half of Pennsylvania where he played NCAA hockey at Mercyhurst. Kemp has bounced around the country considerably since finishing college. He finished his four years at Mercyhurst with 100 points (32 G, 68 A) in 133 games. In 2005-2006, Kemp bounced around to five different teams in the ECHL and AHL. The sporadic stops likely prevented him from developing any chemistry or familiarity, and thus his stats suffered. However, he found a home the next season with the Manchester Monarchs and totaled 38 points (5 G, 33) in 65 games. A bit of a downside is his size. At 5-11, 197 pounds, he will have to bulk up to fit in on an NHL squad. Last year’s defense corps averaged a height of 6-2.25, 216.625 pounds. I question the move considering the plethora of offensive defensemen already on the team and in the Penguins system. It seems that the scouting for the Penguins looks more highly upon defensemen’s offensive statistics than anything else. Either way, the Penguins are still making moves and not solely looking at their main squad. It’s nice to know that the same amount of effort is being put forth to prospects as it is toward finding guys like Satan and Fedotenko. PULLED FROM PENS PUCK TALK

just once i would like to click onto Habsinsideout and read something like ..... BIG TRADE OVIE TO THE HABS FOR BREEZER AND A DRAFT PICK .... but alas we send a 7th rounder for a no one yet again ..... the above trade wish i fully know would never happen so before you jump on me i was mearly making a point.

habs-13's picture
We just picked up a decent offensive dfeneceman for a conditional 7th-round pick. This is Gainey filling out Hamilton's blueline, as it has been worn thin with Weber being called up and Wyman and St.Denis being sent down to the ECHL. This is a guy who seems to have been able to put up decent numbers, despite never having the luxury of playing a consistent role on a team. Gainey seems to believe in giving guys the chance to develop their games within our system. He isn't the type of GM that only puts in the effort to develop their top picks. Putting in the effort to develop your later-round picks, along with your top picks, is the key to becoming a franchise like Detroit, which has found several late-round gems(i.e Zetterberg, Holmstrom, Datsyuk). PS: I bet you thought Gorges was a nobody when we picked him up...I don't think I really need to finsih this sentence. The point is Gainey is only filling out roster spots in Hamilton, but he is doing it with a guy who, he believes, has potential. "Hard work always beats talent, if talent doesn't work hard."

Chorske's picture
Well, not to jump, but it's a spare parts transaction, and should be accepted as such. Kid's got a point every two games, that aint half bad. Snarky aside: just once I'd like to see expectations on this site modified to reflect the fact that the other GMs aren't complete morons. ;)

Rugger's picture
I miss Furguson and Milbury. You are right, the morons are gone.

VintageFan's picture
They're not gone, just done. Spend half your cap on 3 players and then watch your team sink to the bottom of the division. Just ask Tampa, Pitt, and Ottawa

When I see deals like this, I think Gainey would be better off spending his time writting sonnets!

You just set yourself up for all sorts of derogatory comments about your ability to be a GM and/or write sonnets...but I'm in a real good mood today, so I'll leave you alone.

This could be the first in a series of steps to land Mats Sundin. What do you guys think?

fuhgawz's picture
LOL yes Yeats .... that is it ... OMG i never thought about it .... now we can make a pitch to get Sundin back

No way the Canucks can say no to Gainey with this guy as part of the deal. Mats is gonna be a Hab, finally!!!

Just one question: Does he make a nice outlet pass?

not nearly as nice as my glorious outlet pass.He uses a composite stick, i prefer the feel of wood in my hands, um....i mean. I need to sit.

Well, their are outlet passes and YOUR outlet passes! With two hands on your wood, it's just gotta be good!!!

Milan just texted me and said you must be joking. BTW: Mike Ryder sends his regards.

VintageFan's picture
Milan just texted you? I thought you needed opposed thumbs to do that.

did milan take you out for diner and a movie before he texted you like that?

This is gonna put the Habs over the top! This reminds me of the Isles picking up Butch Goring before going on their run of four Cups.
