Price on ice, briefly; Koivu skating

posted by Dave Stubbs at 12h25 EST on Jan 9

Canadiens goalie Carey Price was on Brossard ice briefly this morning, working out with goaltending coach Rollie Melanson and strength and conditioning coordinator Scott Livingston, 70 minutes before the scheduled start of practice.

He was on the ice at 10:40 when I arrived, and now, at 10:54, he's off. The ice isn't badly scratched up, so he wasn't out there long.

Price continues to rehab what's reported to be an ankle injury, and is still listed as day-to-day. He was doing a few lateral-movement drills in the crease. And for what it's worth, he was in the new red pads that he'l wear in the All-Star Game, colour coordinated to the Eastern Conference jersey.

At 11:25, Saku Koivu is on the ice with Melanson, shooting on goalie Marc Denis. The plan stated earlier in the week was for Koivu, rehabbing an ankle sprain, to take part in yesterday's morning skate, practice today and possibly play tomorrow vs. Washington. We'll see if that plan changes with yesterday's morning skate having been scratched.

More from practice later.

I'm still high on last nights game,lol....that was soooo fun .Carbo stated he don't like that style of Hockey????Carbo, don't be saying that going into the 2nd part of the season and play off's cause that's how teams are going to play us.You made sure of this by stating you don't like this style of play and discouraging the players from physical play, that's why Bob Gainey had to get B.G.L.Again ,I'd like to thank the young guy's on the Habs for rejuvenating the team ,it's FANtastic.....Go Habs Go

When saku Comes back carbo will need to use alot of creativity with the lines.heres hoping he puts dagger alongside #11

Gary320's picture
Creativity? Put Chipchura in the minors. That simple. Koivu will play with D'ag and probaly Begin will play on that line too until Tanguay comes back. When Higgins and Tanguay come back, thats when the creativity really starts.. Chipchura in the minors, and I think this will be his last year in MTL too.

First off i think chipchura is a future top notch shutdown Center but i agree he should be sent down when saku comes back.as far as the lines go you cant put begin Alongside saku hes a 4th line grinder......unless you want saku on the 4th line?!

Gary320's picture
Not saying it's going to be consistent. Im saying, until Tanguay comes back. I would not be shocked if you see Begin with him. Who else? You dont mess up your other 3 lines that are working perfectly.

I personally would rather have a d'Ags-saku-weber line. dont forget how successful streit was with koivu last year

showey47's picture
streit spent most of last year playing on the 4th line, not with koivu.Weber with koivu? seriously?

I'm convinced all of these call ups are part of the Habs future, including Chips, barring a trade for a superstar. Chipchura has been very good in his short stints with the Habs. These guys will either wait to be part of a great team in Montreal, or go elsewhere to play sooner on much lesser teams. I'm thinking most opt for the former. Go Habs Go!! You have to keep your stars happy ... Price and Chipchura are good friends. If you want a better shot at keeping Price longterm you keep Chipchura in the fold. It's not like he's going to demand a lot of money as an RFA.

Gary320's picture
He's a RFA this season, I just dont see Habs being really deeply interested in him. I think, even for Kyle. Wouldnt he like to play for a team where he can get alot more ice time and bigger role? Then again with the fact that Koivu and Lang are free agents this year too.. and if they leave. then maybe Habs will have to sign Kyle. Anyway, it's up to the Habs to decide it.. but IMO either he gets traded or he's gone. I dont think he will be a CH or a Dog next year.

mrhabby's picture
agree. can see them being part of trade for some star but with so many contracts coming due and the realty of the cap you never know.

I know that Price wants to play in the All Star Game BUT He is best to decline right now & concentrate on getting that ankle 100%. That's all we need is for Price to inury that ankle again just for a lousy All Star Game. There will be plenty of more All Star Games for "Pricey"....

habs33's picture
Agreed. I hope he doesn't push his luck with this game. Everything about the All Star game has been a farce so far, but for Carey to play and reinjure whatever it is he has injured (ankle?) would be a shame.

Good job Saku, hope to see you back Saturday

I'm sure goalie pads have changed a lot since I played but I'm surprised Carey is ok with changing his so often to suit the league. First they had him wearing those brown throwback pads and now matching All-Star pads. I would think changing pads would be like changing the curve on a forward's stick.

Mike T's picture
NHL goaltenders get about three new sets of pads a year. Or more. It's normal. And yes, they do break them in early of course.

habs33's picture
He's been breaking the brown throwbacks in for some time now, I think as far as back as pre-season. There is a definite "learning curve" to new pads. Price has been wearing Vaughans for a while and I would assume these new "All Star" pads are the Velocity 3 model he wears but just in a different colour scheme. Any pictures of these new pads floating around, Stubbs? I'd be keen to take a peek at those whenever you guys get a chance.

Whatever time Price needs, he should take it. Even if he's not back until after the All Star game...2 months to get his game in order before the playoffs should be just fine. www.reebokslasheshockeyjobs.com www.unitehere.ca/reebok

Thanks for the update Dave. The pads thing gives me some hope, but I hope he's back before the All-Star game! How about Saturday? Although, Halak has looked better & better the last couple of games. Hello Mr. Stubbs, Would you happen to have pictures of Carey`s new pads, being a goalie, we are kinnda get excited about these things! Thanks! Eric You can email it to me!

they also said that Johnny Bower was the best goalie in the history of the NHL! I guess they never heard of Plante, Roy, Dryden, Brodeur, etc.

habs33's picture
Yeah I noticed that, too. It was Joe Bowen who said it, though, and I don't believe he's that hockey knowledgable.... Either way, we know who the real greats are...

smiler2729's picture
Those Leaf clowns on Sportsnet (Bill Watters & Nick Kypreos) last night said it was a "high ankle sprain" and that he'd be out "a long while". I guess they were wishing. Here's hoping Carey's back ASAP! P.S. Leafs suck!
