Price hits cover of ESPN The Magazine

posted by Dave Stubbs at 8h16 EST on Jan 17

Canadiens goaltender Carey Price is featured as the cover story of the Jan. 26 issue of ESPN The Magazine, profiled by writer Lindsay Berra.

From the magazine's news release:

Pressure is part of the package with playing for the Glorious Ones. The Canadiens – arguably one of most storied franchises in all of sports, are celebrating their centennial season, hosting the 57th NHL All-Star Game and have the fourth best record in the Eastern Conference – expectations for the Stanley Cup are at a high.

But it’s harder to stay calm and play in a town that regards a Stanley Cup as practically a civic right. Failure to deliver on the ultimate prize can leave scars – and bitter memories. That’s why Price’s quietness and composure may be his best assets and traits to help him survive the heat in Montreal’s crease.

Quotes from the article:

• Mike Komisarek, teammate on Price: “He’s always calm back there, and it spills

• Price’s father, Jerry: “Carey wants to be the difference. He wants to be the No.1 guy on the biggest stage there is.”

The magazine cover was shot recently at the Canadiens' practice facility in Brossard.

wow, that's a sick cover. well done!

I love the retro pads. I wish he'd make them his regular ones...

Come on Doug, you're telling me Price can't be molded into a goaltender of Luongo's or Brodeur's caliber? First off, how would you know? Secondly, it's his second year and look how fluid his laterals are, he's still extremely calm in nets and for once I DON'T FEEL NERVOUS ABOUT OUR GOALTENDING WHEN HE IS IN FRONT OF THE CREASE! I'm sure lots of other fans would be willing to say the same thing. Price is going to be a legitimate superstar. Now i know you said you "wish him well", so I'm, in turn, not saying you don't like him. You need to, however, believe the hype...this ain't no Alexander Daigle. Price is the type of goaltender who will win games all by himself when we get shelled. As far as hype goes throughout the hockey networks, yes, Price is regarded as the next big thing in goaltending; and not just because someone at ESPN said: "Hey, this guy looks like a good goaltender, let's hype him up!". I've given you sufficient evidence that Price is the name you'll be hearing when Marty Brodeur hangs up the pads. As far as you comparing him to Luongo or Marty at this stage in Carey's career: Are you insane? HE JUST STARTED! Believe you me when Price has as many miles as Luongo or Brodeur have, you'll see that your assumptions were wrong. He isn't a flukey goaltender like Tim Thomas or Dominik Hasek. He doesn't just throw himself around like a fish out of water. I can tell you honestly, that I have never seen a goaltender with reflexes like his or strength with his lateral movements and how easy it looks for him to make them. Again, this is his second year in the NHL (1 and a half to be precise) and he already looks as good as the best of them. You still going to tell me he isn't going to be one of the best?

I was just struck by something odd when I took another look at that shot. I could buy a pretty good drumkit if I could fence that gear he's wearing.

I really enjoyed that article, actually. Price is in a difficult spot being who he is where he is, and I totally agree that we are too quick to judge: both good and bad. That said, GO HABS GO, and I still love Carey. :)

Honestly, why do people keep answering a wum like "retro leafs fan" ? Just stop it and he´ll soon be gone...

great article , price is the best

If ESPN Mag is trying to increase circulation in Montreal, there are worse ways to go about it! :>

Wayne's picture
Ha! well put, Dru. Great shot of Carey in the "stressed" gear motif! Hot off the presses, colour key and all.

Carey! Great stuff young man. Hope you're back soon.

Carey Price at this stage of his young career, has potential, but until he win a vezina trophy, and/or win a cup, he hasn't done anything yet to even be considered with the likes of Brodeur, Roy. Let him prove himself first. This kid is so over hyped it's sickening. If he was playing for Carolina or Florida, do you think he would get all this attention, or hype? geez, it's overbearing to say the least. At his performance against the flyers in the playoffs, certainly didn't help his cause. right now, he's a good goalie with potential, that's all!

re: my "secret love" for the bruins on the prior page, kjd. read this: boone is the one who had the secret love last year. and read my response on page two. you can call me a lot of things but call me a bruins fan and i'll go ballistic. http://habsinsideout.com/boone/6415?page=1

You made 'retro leafs fan' look like an idiot. Good show, that's the exact reason Montreal is such a hard place to play

travelsized's picture
Exactly, thank you!

exactly, if he were playing in Carolia or Florida he wouldn't be facing the same pressure now would he??

habsfansince91's picture
in the playoffs last year he was dead tired. how can you expect any athlete to play 100% when he played nonstop hockey for one full year.

boris420's picture
Yeah if Im not mistaken in all other leagues below NHL they only play one game a week so the players are used to getting alot of rest. Watch the game live online: http://habsonlinetv.blogspot.com/

"The Canadiens – arguably one of the most storied franchises in all of sports" ESPN news release. Geez, I'm sick of the word "arguably". It's used more often than not when the writer doesn't have the nerve to stand behind what he writes. How about this: "The Canadiens – one of the most storied franchises in all of sports" Concise and true. No argument there. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sDOW6KofuLo

Wayne's picture
Yeah, but that's 'cause it's a Habs / Yankees thing and it's a U.S. rag so maybe the use of the word here is one way to prevent the author's inbox from filling up with hatemail by equally rabid NY fans.

Mr_MacDougall's picture
Price is BETTER than Crosby or Malkin or Ovechkin... would anybody out there trade Price for any of those three straight up?

Garbo's picture
For Ovechkin, in a heartbeat. Price has potential to be the best goalie, but Ovy IS the best player in the league and will be for a long while. Maybe even Malkin, but definitely not Crosby.

NEVER

deuce6's picture
IDK about better than, but he is right up there with them... ================== "Its great to win a conference championship, but they don't put conference banners up there, they put Stanley Cup banners up there" - Carey Price

Corporate's picture
To tell you the truth... Goalies come by the dozen every year. There are a ton of goalies that are good for the NHL. As for forwards like Ovechkin, I would take him in a heartbeat... He is great with the puck, hits, plays both ways of the ice very well.. As for Malkin and Crosby, no I would not trade for them. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Koivu for Prime Minister...

deuce6's picture
Yea, they do come a dime a dozen, but goalies that have the talent level of Price/Brodeur/Roy/Luongo do not.. They are what you call "money" goalies..and Price has all the tools to become one.. ================== "Its great to win a conference championship, but they don't put conference banners up there, they put Stanley Cup banners up there" - Carey Price

notbigbird's picture
I take your point. The difference between a very good goalie and an excellent goalie may not be as great as the difference between those three and the rest.

Mr_MacDougall's picture
Goalies do not come by the dozen every year, there are only a couple in the league you can bank on... Louango, Brodeur, Turco(for the most part), Nabakov, Giguere... and now Price

doug's picture
Kiprusoff, Lundqvist, Dipietro (when he arrived, not how it's turned out),Miller, Backstrom... And now - WE HOPE - Price

deuce6's picture
Price has more potential than any of these guys..I hope to god he turns out better than Miller/Kiprusoff.. He may be better than those 2 as of right now, IMO.. ================== "Its great to win a conference championship, but they don't put conference banners up there, they put Stanley Cup banners up there" - Carey Price

doug's picture
Umm. Yeah.

Number31's picture
NO!

Like Your Opinion counts Doug!!!!!!!!!!!

doug's picture
I figured that out, HD. Feel like I'm the only celibate guy at an orgy! I bet if you polled NHL gm's I would't be the sole outlier. We'll check back in five years and compare hardware counts for ovechkin to price. Love the guy. And want him to succeed... But theodore sure had a short time at the top. And to discount someone's opinion because it differs from a bunch of homers who wanted the guy lynched after playoffs last year... Sounds like Nazi Germany with your inability to think apart or listen to opinions beyond the deluded majority (and I'm not truly comparing the two so spare me the responses that may inspire).

ross's picture
Godwin finally has his foot in the door on sports blogs; his reign shall be eternal.

Mr_MacDougall's picture
Five years? Hardware? if Stanley cups are what you're talking about then that is a valid statement Doug. Price has the potential to be a top 5 goalie for the next 14-18 years, in five years Price will not even have peeked as goalies peak at about 32-33 years of age. Hardwar, my god man, are you that kinda dude? hart trophies don't mean sh**, Jagr won scoring titles and Hart trophies, but no cups after Mario left. You dont trade a Goalie until he plays his way off your team.... Ask Florida.

doug's picture
I think Ovechkin is a surer thing. I'd trade for him and not the bag of pucks Luongo was traded for. That was a horrendous trade. You're suggesting it's not worth trading Price for who I perceive to be the single best player in the league. That's not risky and prospects. I make that deal and most if not all Gms would. This wouldn't even be debated on the other 29 teams' fan sites. Don't act like I'm crazy when I'm at the very least conventional wisdom if not in your opinion correct

Mr_MacDougall's picture
yeah i agree Ovechkin is a slam dunk, the deal would be more even than you're making it seem..... the point I am trying to make is that Price is one of the more valuable players in the league and there are not too many deals you could make player for player.

Mr_MacDougall's picture
the brown pads with the bown blocker and trapper looked so damn good, makes me wonder what players would look like with brown gloves, probably pretty damn good with our colors

MontrealCanadiens31's picture
i enjoy that comment, doug. mostly, because it's ridiciulouly funny and idiotic. thats quite honestly the dumbest comment i've ever read on here. are you forgetting the fact that Carey Price brought the Canadiens to the play offs last season ? Do you recall his November (or December ? baha, idk.) Molson Cup award ? His talent is quite evident, and he's unlike any other goaltender in the nhl right now.

doug's picture
to each his own. we all have the right to our own opinion. so i suspect you think he deserved to start the all-star game on his own merit, too? i love the habs, but we need to be objective. and price brought the highest scoring team to the playoffs last year? umm. . . ok. i thought we had a deep team with balanced scoring and solid defense. must just be me. i didn't realize that he was the only reason. i can remember jose theodore doing that. . .

Corporate's picture
I see where you are going with this and I might agree just a little. But any team without goaltending will go nowhere. We saw with the Canadiens in the playoffs when the goaltending was not at its best, we couldn't buy a game against the flyers. But during the season he was the one that gave us quite a great second half. He was awesome. Just that proves he is a good goalie. But only time will tell if he will be great. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Koivu for Prime Minister...

Detroit... Chris Osgood.... case closed.

splurge's picture
Pricey looks sexy in those retro pads. Splurge

doug's picture
Is that your moniker at the end or is it what happened when you saw the picture?

Hoegarden's picture
Off topic. The Edmonton Oilers traded goaltender Mathieu Garon to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday for goaltender Dany Sabourin, centre Ryan Stone, and a fourth-round pick in 2011.

Wayne's picture
Oilers got the better of the deal by at least one asset. I'd give the nod to Garon over Sabourin talent-wise and Oilers get another body immediately.

doug's picture
Awesome cover... And... INCREDIBLY premature. Hasn't accomplished anything in theNHL. Guess they needed someone to profile for Habs 100th... And nice thought... But really. It's more likely tha this will be his only cover of a major sports magazine ever as it is that he'll become something big. I love the Habs, but... Bizarre

I second what MontrealCanadiens31 said!!!!!!!!!!!!!

crabvader's picture
Dude, do you not realize that Carey Price is the Sidney Crosby or Alexander Ovechkin of goaltending? People were hyping those two like crazy even before they started playing in the NHL aswell. Price has an incredible background, let me remind you. All in one year; wins Canadian juniors on the heels of keeping his team in it in a shootout vs USA, wins the Calder cup with the Hamilton Bulldogs, takes the Canadiens into the playoffs when EVERYONE said trading Huet was a "huge" mistake. Sure he got gassed after the Boston series, but how many goaltenders can you say did all that in one year? Price is legitemately the next big star in the NHL. ESPN is the biggest sports news station in North America, I think they can afford to hire writers who have an abundance of hockey knowledge and insight.

doug's picture
whatever - premature. and spare me the "crosby of goaltending". time will tell, and i think sidney's first season was more memorable than price's. i love him and want the most from him, but i don't expect him to be a brodeur. luongo never got a cover - what's with that? he's been the savior for years according to pundits. btw, here's the story (i have yet to read) for those who want to read: http://sports.espn.go.com/espnmag/story?section=magazine&id=3836512

DOUG: How do U know if Price will never be a Brodeur? How many Cups has Luongo ever won?

doug's picture
I don't know. To me he's a second year player with promise. I hope it works out. He's (Luongo's) won the same number of Cups as Price. I think he's done well to date but not a top five NHL goaltender yet and not deserving of a cover on the magazine. I don't think it's good to overhype him, either. Just let the kid grow.

doug's picture
i detest the bruins. i certainly did not sing their praises: boone said "he liked the team" and i put out one of the most impassioned hate-ons for that team. i can find it if you'd like. i think he's overhyped but i haven't read this article yet. i think that krejci and lucic are very solid players and that it is indeed easier to be an impact forward than it is to be a sure thing goalie. i just don't think he needs the pressure. and no, i don't subscribe to espn the magazine. much of their stuff is online, and apologies but i don't consider it a hockey magazine or supportive of the sport so i am not a fan of the network. even when they showed the games they still relegated hockey to the worst position.

doug's picture
here's boone's love and my retort. http://habsinsideout.com/boone/6415?page=1

On the cover of ESPN.... Carey Price has arrived!

24 Cups's picture
We have two games left (Atlanta & New Jersey) before the All Star break which is a five day layoff for Montreal. I think it would be crazy to play Price in those two games or the All Star exhibition. I know the game's in Montreal, but there is no chance of a Cup if Price isn't healthy. I say start him in the two games in Florida which means he would get another 10 days of rehab and rest. I agree 100% 24.... That way I can see Price in Tampa on the 27 of Jan......

Wow. Beautiful lighting and contrast on that cover! http://starshinediva.blogspot.com

The article was distinctly American. Really didn't say anything we didn't already know, and overexagerrated a lot too.

Fargo Habs Fan's picture
Of course it didn't say anything we didn't already know. If it did, we wouldn't really be Habs fans! As for the article, I thought it was great, and if it gives hockey (especially the Habs) greater exposure in the US, then that is fantastic. ~Goose~ PS: To the couple with the "Leafs nation sucks" shirts in section 208, row D during the Jan 8 game vs Toronto: If you are reading this, please shoot me an email, and thanks for being rowdy! Why is the loneliest man in sports?

Number31's picture
Because the hockey goaltender is the loneliest man in sports (used to be only one goalie per team really in the old days too) but the CANADIENS goaltender is in a class all its own.
