Heavenly day for Gazette contest winner

Alexis Fawcett-Moya, a 17-year-old from Montreal West, won a Gazette contest to be a reporter for a day during All-Star Game weekend. He spent the day moving from one all-star to another, and without a single word of editing, here's his report on his memorable day:

By ALEXIS FAWCETT-MOYA
Special to Habs Inside/Out and The Gazette

Equipped with my pocket recorder and digital camera, I ventured into the 2009 NHL All Stars media frenzy in the ballroom of the Queen Elizabeth Hotel, the likes of which I had only imagined until today. The chance not only to see these hockey superstars, but to actually meet them face-to-face, was an opportunity that, while perhaps old hat to Boone, Hickey and Stubbs, was beyond my expectations.

A devoted Habs fan, I naturally spent most of my time elbowing members of the press to get close to Kovy, Komisarek, Markov and Price, but occasionally ventured beyond my comfort zone to hear from stars such as Dan Boyle, Joe Thornton, Patrick Kane and Patrick Marleau (who gave up a trip to Disneyland with his kids to replace Pavel Datsyuk).

Of course, I made time for the unfairly talented Ovechkin, who looks as crazy in person as he does on the ice.

Naturally I avoided Tomas Kaberle from the Leafs – even I have my standards.

Most of my prepared questions were left unanswered due to my inexperience in outshouting the veteran reporters, so I trailed Cabbie of “Cabbie on the Street” fame to start with because of his ability to get one-on-one interviews with players and to add some humour to the event. His stock question to each player was whether they practiced yoga, to which only Getzlaf and Thornton admitted.

Some additional tidbits I picked up at the event:

• Watch for Western Captain Thornton to give Cabbie the “C for Cabby” shout-out if he scores on Sunday!

• Cabbie’s pal Gerry Dee did his part to bewilder Keith Tkachuk by pronouncing his name “Tee-Ka-chuck” and demanding to know why his nickname was “Seesaw” despite Tkachuk protestations to the contrary.

• When asked about any special moves we might expect from them, most players responded by saying they’d been practising some nifty dekes and dangles. I was impressed by Kovalev’s understated response: “I haven’t practised any special moves – I have enough moves in my body to do what needs to get done!”

• Joe Thornton, when asked for his reaction when he hears the name Tim Thomas, said, “I just smile – I enjoy watching him play.” Definitely not how Habs fans react when they hear that name.

• Dany Heatley failed to provide the correct answer when asked what 4 to the power of 0 was. But no one seemed to notice but me.

• My coach Dave Stubbs got Ovechkin to admit there was nothing he could do to beat Kovalev for fan support in the skills competition, but kudos to Alexander the Gr8 for at least wearing the same shirt as me to the event.

• Capped by Vinnie Lecavalier’s press conference and an unexpected visit from Sidney Crosby, the day was overwhelming – many thanks to the Gazette for an unbeatable experience!

Smooth, personable writing style, Alexis. Only 17, eh? Looks like you're primed to replace one of those, ah, senior Gazette city beat columnists. "...Ovechkin, who looks as crazy in person as he does on the ice." Heh. I bet he does. Nice job. JD

Excellent report Alexis! I look forward to seeing your name in print in the future.

Alexis - Great work and humorous and is there any truth to the rumour your Donald S.Cherry's nephew, lol.

The Heatly line and the Kaberle lines are classics!

I hate to beat this to death but after seeing Lecavallier's press conference today, I realized they have no choice but to go out and get this guy. Wanted to see people's opinion on this trade To Tampa Bay: Pleks, Higgins and Markov (its well known that Markov is key to the deal) To Montreal: Lecavallier However, the Habs only do this trade if they can complete the following trade: To Toronto: PK Subban and 1st round pick To Montreal: Kaberle ( a Hab killer, he would be the perfect replacement for Markov) Thoughts people??

I like, except Id replace Markov with Subban, and add a 4th round pick. Then for Kaberle, trade Markov and a 3rd round pick. I just dont think Tampa will want what you suggested, they'll probably want a bit more, especially younger talent, wheras the Leafs will want to replace an old vet with an old vet to keep the experience facter in.

Dude, this is Alexis' moment, not a spot to post that. I think this is what somene was talking about in Mike's post earlier today about cleaning up the site by not posting trade/line suggestions.

My apologies, got ahead of myself after thinking what a player like Lecavallier can bring. You are correct I should not have posted that trade suggestion on this article, I will save it for another time. Keep up the good work alexis In terms of cleaning up the sight, this is a Montreal Canadiens Hockey blog, Im not sure posting a trade suggestion on how I think the team could be improved is a bad thing. A blog should give rise to discussion and thats excactly what intended to do.

No trade or line suggestions? Come on! Lighten up. That is exactly what this site IS for.

Chuck's picture
This site in general, yes. But let's keep this thread for recognition of Alexis' fine work as reporter for a day. He put in that effort for us, so let's respect his work and post the trade or line suggestions on a more appropriate thread.

Oh I agree completely, I was just responding to his 2nd paragraph.

Funny stuff, Alexis. Keep up the good work! Do I see an internship at the Gazette in your future?

Couldn't figure out what was making that noise earlier today. If there's a call for a vote then I vote to lose the sound. Annoying!

Great job Alexis. I thoroughly enjoyed the read. And good for you for keeping your standards. ;o)) I hope to one day see your name as a Gazette writer. You'd be a great addition! ........... "To you from failing hands we throw the torch. Be yours to hold it high." I STILL BELIEVE. I WILL ALWAYS BELIEVE.

wow. this wasn't edited?? he definitely has a knack for writing! great job, Alexis!

Nice work Alexis. But remember, journalists are supposed to be un-biased, so you should have talked to Kaberle ;)

Alexis. Great job. As someone whose toiled in the journalistic ranks for 20 plus years, I think you have great potential and a gift, should you decide to pursue it as a career in the future.
