Robert Lang is helped off Bell Centre ice Sunday afternoon by Graham Rynbend, the team's head athletic therapist.
Christinne Muschi, Reuters

Robert Lang's first season with the Montreal Canadiens is over.

The announcement:

Forward Robert Lang underwent successful surgery to repair a severed Achilles tendon on his left leg. The 38-year-old forward is presently recovering from surgery and will be out indefinitely.

Lang suffered the injury during the third period of Sunday afternoon’s game against the Boston Bruins, at the Bell Centre. He was transferred to the Montreal General Hospital where surgery was performed on Sunday night.

Lang leads the team in goals and power-play goals, with 18 and eight, respectively. His 39 points are second to Andrei Markov's 40.

Lang's career has been characterized by consistency – 20 goals or more in seven of the last nine seasons – and durability, even into his late 30s: 76 games last season in Chicago, 81 the year before in Detroit.

Get well soon, Robert Lang; we're rooting for you!

Wishing Lang a full & speedy recovery. at his age, i wonder if this injury will force him into retirement? you'll be missed, Lang.

Chorske's picture
See my post below- it should certainly not end his career. This injury has an excellent recovery rate even among older so-called "weekend warriors". A fit dude like Lang will come back from this. And yeah: he will be missed.

I am so unhappy right now.

BKAK72's picture
Too bad for Lang. How he managed to take on such a huge role in our offence is remarkable, lucky...perhaps? This team has been w/out a bonafide #1 center since Bobby Smith wore #15. Please don't even associate Pierre Turgeon with Smith, and Koivu has carried far too much weight for years. Come on Gainey...get us that #1 Center!! Where's our #1 Center?

Harani's picture
I still believe that we are in a strong position. We just need a puck-moving D-man and I think we can go far. Yesterday's game could be a building block and then we can move on. Here's my point of view: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/118827-montreal-canadiens-present-sit...

Never mind. You played very well. Ta, luck doesn't always run the way..........

A classy guy with a great smile and crazy hair... I hope he recovers and wants to play again. The recovery is one thing, but at his age he may option to retire. I'm hoping his obvious enthusiasm and love of hockey will allow us to see him again. He's 38 years old YOUNG! Get well soon, Robert Lang. You will be missed... A wake up call to the rest of the boys to step up. Now the team is pretty much the same as last year.

I don't care if he's 108 years old with two bum legs and a goiter the size of a football. Losing a guy who for 50 or so games has proven to be your best and most consistent player is not a blessing in disguise, it's potentially calamitous. I'm sensing a bit of hostility on your part here... How can you accuse Gainey of being a stand-pat GM when he added Lang, Tanguay and Laraque over the summer -- both forwards were our leading scorer when they went down, and Laraque was to bring the toughness we so sorely needed. He couldn't have known that they'd all get injured, along with Koivu, Higgins, Lats, Gorges, Komisarek, Price.... Sure we need another top-4 defenseman, and a big #1 centre would be great, but our main problem has a lot more to do with the players and the coach than it does with our GM. 1. www.flickeringpictures.com - not a hockey site, but still kinda neat 2. Josh Gorges on Montreal's attack: "They're comin', they're comin' and they keep comin'. Just line after line, wave after wave..."

76 - Well at least Robert could say that he was tied with Spezza, Toews and Pominville in scoring when he was injured, no wonder nobody wants to play here.

Chorske's picture
"nothing less will be tolerated or accepted" hahahahahaha I got five bucks says Gainey not only resigns Lang, but does so for two years at a great price. Age is just a number, my friend. This 38 year old was our highest scoring forward, a character guy with experience, impeccable conditioning, and a great attitude. I'll bet he was great for the room, and his absence will be felt.

Chorske's picture
YOU "you" common sense. Youth is nothing without experience. It's why Chicago have hung onto Havlat, for instance- no team has banked more on its youth than CHicago... but who do you think talks Kane, Toews, etc through the rough spots? Its the same with us. Remember Koivu's pow-wow with Sergei on the bench after AndreiK got injured? Have you not seen Lang's demeanor after each game, win or lose? THAT'S what you want in the room, not some half-cocked kid. Lang's conditioning is awesome and he's more than kept up with some of our more talented prospects- and in fact (as Boone points out) he has lit a fire under the *** of every linemate he's been handed. Age is just a number. And frankly your guarantee aint worth much.

Was that 40 odd year Igor Larenanov skating around the ice with the stanley cup in that vintage, or was i dreaming. What's Cheilos age???

Kristopher7's picture
Did you read Chorske's post? All those positives about Lang? There are probably 39 year olds out there in better shape than you, you know that right? Also he is the team's second best in points.

Big Bird's picture
Funny how some people crapped on Bob Gainey for signing Lang instead of Sundin at the beginning of the season and now we're all moaning about his loss?

Gr8stFranchizEvr's picture
so true. Lang has been a great acquisition. So has Tanguay. too bad both are injured now. this is a blow to the team.

Bright Side: know what? right now, it's streit for tanguay. Last year, we were good. I love Langer, but maybe this gives people the motivation (and ice time) they nead to step up? Chemistry is a part of what this team is missing right now. Last year may seem like a great year because of the regular season, but let's be honest: it was no better than the last three playoff series, wherein a bruins beating was our consolation for an early round exit. Last year, kovy, price, and the power play went south at the same time. Which boils down o kovy and price, frankly. So this year, same formula, more tricks. We have tanguay. Sergei is a year older. People in contract years. It makes no difference where we finish provided we make the playoffs and are ready to win multiple rounds. Know when we last won two rounds? 1993. Can't blame carbo, koivu, kovalev, gainey, petrov, streit, souray, or anyone else. We must stop with our lust of the regular season! (inspirational music, please). If we want our team to win a cup, then the goal of the regular season is to figure out what works and what doesn't, to get players experience, etc. etc. All we have to do is finish eighth and we have a shot. Fire yourselves up in April, May, and (now) June!

JIMVINNY's picture
I think our cup hopes may have been shredded as badly as his Achilles tendon. Without our most reliable center, I can't imagine us going very deep.

odis_habs's picture
drive for 25 does this not almost force gainey to fill the void?

Chorske's picture
I've been thinking about this. With the loss of his plan B, big centermen may be back at the top of the wish list.

Kristopher7's picture
I'm still sad that Lang is out... :(

lang's injury wouldn't have happened if we weren't wearing those ridiculous prison uniforms. thats not even vintage habs, its just in bad taste! wish you the best in your recovery R.L, hope to see you with the CH next season.

RudeMood19's picture
Well we need to get someone to take Lang's place. Again, with the bad luck with this team, unbelievable.

WestHab's picture
Great loss no doubt and he seems very likeable too, I'm sure he'll be missed in the locker room. The play seemed fairly innocent to me, it's hard to believe. Good Luck, Robert and come back next year. ------------------------------------------- "We have them just where we want'em."

When is Tanguay expected to be back in the lineup?

Fearless prediction. Habs will reel off a tidy three-game win streak before heading west next week. This based on nothing other than unbridled wishful thinking and the belief that every guy on the team is doing a lot of soul searching right now. They have to realize this is the turning point of the season. Which direction is in their hands only.

Chorske's picture
OK, I did a quick search on pubmed, and here is the deal. A lacerated achilles tendon is probably not a career ender. The prognosis is excellent if a) the person is a pro athlete and b) the surgery to correct the problem is done quickly (in this case less than 24 hours). The leg is immobilized after surgery, with the toe slightly down, and over weeks is reimmobilized post-surgery in a series of casts while gradually restoring the foot to a more natural, flat position. During this time the patient can maintain conditioning using non-weight-bearing exercise like swimming or cycling. The prognosis for pro athletes is excellent, with full return to normal activities usually happening within four months. In other words, Lang could be back skating by May.

tony d's picture
sorry man but don't count on it...been there.... he may be walking sans crutches by then but not ready to skate

Chorske's picture
No offense, but every paper I looked at made it clear that the speed of recovery has everything to do with initial conditioning, and that "weekend warriors" like us take 6 months or more to return to normal activity.

gumper's picture
Isn't there a difference between lacerated and severed? Wasn't Lang's severed?

Chorske's picture
No- as far as I can tell, the two types of injury are "rupture" and "laceration". Ruptured means it just pops. Laceration means cut or severed. But I didn't get the impression that the two injuries were all that different from a treatment perspective- in fact a couple of the treatment support sites didn't distinguish between the two injuries at all. Of course, the medical articles did, but as you can imagine they have to be as clear as possible about the nature of the injury they're reporting.

SlovakHab's picture
So he'll be right back for the SC finals.

brad.men5's picture
Hey guys, I'm not quite sure why, but this one really got to me. Losing Lang is such a huge blow to the team. As soon as I saw Lang fall to the ice I have to say, a little part of me died. And I still can't believe it. One of my favorite players, I wish you a speedy recovery and the best of luck! Time for the others to step up!

tony d's picture
I feel bad for Lang. I tore my achilles when I was 37 and although I'm not a pro athlete (at least that's what my wife says) the recovery was slow and painful. I'm guessing the earliest he'd be ready is late summer to mid Sept. I wish him a speedier recovery and thanks for all the goals. I'd hate to think what shape we'd be in without his contribution.

BRING ON THE YOUTH, BABY!

G-Man's picture
Often, adversity provides the challenge that athletes respond positively to. It's time for Lapierre to step up and provide more than energy. He, Higgins and Kosto need to score 1 every 2 games (the line, not the individual player) and hold the opponents to nothing. The 4th line has to play a few scoreless minutes and work as hard as possible. With many fans on this site saying Max Pac is the NEXT BIG THING, now has an extended chance to prove it. Can D'Agostini be a sniper? Since the big start, only 1 goal. Putting pressure to perform on these and others like Lats makes sure there is no free ride. Koivu can't play the minutes needed to lead the team and have something left for the playoffs. Kovy can, but will he waste them? Can Komi find an offensive game to chip in once every 3 games with an assist? This is a team built for speed and firewagon hockey. The Habs have to find their way together or flounder in February. Gilbert 2008/09 is the season of the Habs

jw20's picture
thats too bad -- I really hate to see any player get hurt

This is definitely the worst injury the habs are facing now. we have no size up front if hes not back by playoffs. as im sure he wont be. he was the heart of this team and he managed to capture that title within months of wearing the jersey. his character really showed when he came to mtl. great guy, terrible loss. all the best luck to him. so basically we're the same team as last season with the addition of tanguay and a weaker defense. the playoffs wont be kind to us unless BG makes a move.

Nahlsy's picture
That injury hurts this squad really badly, moreso than any of the others really. He was the only forward that seemed to give a damn out there anymore and now he's gone. If only we could borrow some of his heart, effort and enthusiasm and give it to those on this squad that clearly have none whatsoever anymore. Kovalev, Plekanec, I'm talking to you two specifically but, I doubt you'll hear me with your heads up your backsides.

All the best Mr Lang. I really enjoyed watching you play this season. You are one classy player. Get well soon.

JVF's picture
Time for "The Franchise," Carey Price, to step up and steal a couple of games for us... until we get settled down. We need shutouts, big saves, class A goaltending, which we have NOT been getting this year from either Price or Halak.

showey47's picture
how about those guys in front of him cleverly disguised as defencemen stop giving the puck away and maybe pick up a man in front of the net from time to time.

longbow's picture
I agree with you Showey. It doesn't matter how good a goalie is,if the guys in front don't do their job the goalie doesn't stand a chance. Most of the goals he's allowed he had no chance on.Some were easy but that happens to the best of them.I remember Dryden had a unique talent for letting in soft ones from behind the net.

showey47's picture
true, all the best ones have also allowed some real stinkers from time to time. For the most part a goalie can only be as good as the team in front of him.

Habsville's picture
A BIG THANK YOU TO ROBERT!! A great addition to the club and we all benefitted from his efforts too. I send out good health wishes and I hope you are pain free when your healed. I think this opens a job opportunity fr Kyle Chipchura. It also opens the need for a center in the market.

From day 1 he love being in a habs uniform and his play showed it.Don,t know how long it take to recover from this type of injury but I sure hope we see him a year from now or sooner.

gauthier gets five games. he should have gotten ten!

Mike Boone's picture
He should be out for AT LEAST as many games as Gorges misses.

Itsik's picture
hi Mike, does it mean tat Bob now as more money to spend under the cap now that Lang is gone?

fun police's picture
the only problem with that is that sometimes a bonehead takes a serious run at someone and by some miracle the victim doesn't get injured at all. what do we do in that case? i'd like them to set the bar very high for head shots and make no exceptions.

showey47's picture
tony, looking forward to the next press release from the president of the pluggers association of north america branch #62240.That was absolute gold.

longbow's picture
Its bad enough for a young guy but at 38 and the fact his contract is up his career could very well be over.Very very unfortunate.I know I'm not Mike but this is the first thing that popped in my head when I heard what happened to Lang.

RiverviewCanadien's picture
Unbelievable, he should have got 10...

TheDagger's picture
Yup at least, not that the hit itself was worth more than ten, but it is Gauthier and he is no stranger to that gutless type of hit.

5???????? omg repeat offender 5 games

Well not to take away from this post being about the crappy luck of losing one of our classy guys but What IF Kovy gets traded b4 the deadline. It's gonna sting if he come out flying for a new club(coz we all know he can) and what if that new club is someone well have to contend with during a playoff run???YIKES. That would have to play on BG's mind as well

A. Berke's picture
my guess would be about six months. Ali B.

All the best in your recovery Mr. Lang. You gave us Habs fans a season to remember and the team needs to pick up the missing pieces by continuing their strong play like yesterday. With Lang gone for the season, its time for the rest of the team to come together and build on from last game. Captain "K" needs to put a fire under these guys and say lets win this for Langer. When Kovalev decides to come to play, the Habs will be contenders. IMO, This is what I like to see in starting line up; Matt D'Agostini- Saku Koivu- Max Pacioretty Andrei Kostitsyn- Tomas Plekanec- Alexei Kovalev Greg Stewart- Maxim Lapierre- Tom Kostopoulos Steve Begin- Christopher Higgins- Sergei Kostitsyn Andrei Markov- Mike Komisarek Roman Hamrlik- Josh Gorges(IR) or Ryan O'Byrne Francis Bouillon- Alex Henry What do you guys think of that line up. Open to any suggestions. Thanks!!

Good lines, Habsforlife! I think the team is lacking chemistry right now. Putting 46-14-27 back together is only a matter of time until it clicks. The only other thing that I would change is to bring up Weber. O'Byrne hasn't cut it this year. He is lacking confidence. On another note, I don't think AK27 will be back next year. Like Ryder, I think his conflict with Carbo is great enough that he will not want to put himself through another season with that much tension. How a few months turn things around: we were the hottest thing coming out of the gates. We've been struggling over the past two months and we need to get that winning chemistry back!

You can put Cournoyer, Beliveau and Ferguson or Lafleur, Shutt and Lemaire out on the ice. However, if the effort isn't there, the results won't be pretty. At the end of the day, it's desire, effort, heart and some luck that this team needs. Carbo's already gone through virtually every possible line combination and d pairing by now.

showey47's picture
we haven't tried the breezer at center yet.

Oh, it's coming. No doubt about it!

habs-13's picture
Lang really enjoyed playing for the CH, and desereves respect for that. While we'll miss the guy, we souldn't sit on this for too long. The team needs to prepare itself mentally to play without one of their best centermen. IMO, Chipchura should be the first to get called up and given the opportunity to show us what he's capable of. He will be asked to play the role that he is comfortable with, which is playing defensive hockey. A couple players on this team will have to step up if we are to stay competitive through all these injuries. I like Higgins playing with Lapierre and Kostopoulos. Although, with all these injuries he might have to be put onto one of the top 2 lines to try and help out on offence. It forces him to keep his feet moving, and do the little things, much like it did to Latendresse. The Kostitsyn's have shown that they can be dynamite when playing together. They can combine a physical edge with tremendous speed, but have done so inconsistently. Plekanec is just having one of those seasons where nothing seems to be going his way. We all know what he can do, but it's up to him to find it within himself to get it going. With Lang out, Plekanec will most likely be given the opportunity to play on one of the top two lines. Kovalev, it's pretty simple when you're dealing with him. All you have to do it get him to put in the effort. He is a vet and doesn't need to be tought the game, but rather needs motivation. Once he is motivated, he explodes and can get the team going. The problem is that he is difficult to motivate. "Hard work always beats talent, if talent doesn't work hard."

Rugger's picture
Good luck with your recovery and hope we all get to see you in a Habs uniform again next year!

I really love how TSN was saying yesterday that Lang got his achilles tendon cut when he hit Stephane Yelle into the boards. Now this is a direct quote from today: "He was injured 8:33 into the third period on Sunday's game against the Boston Bruins when he was hit into boards by Stephane Yelle." I know it isn't that relevant, but how do these people have jobs?

Robert Lang, I hope your recovery goes well and you are able to join this team next year (maybe this year in the playoffs, hey miracles can happen), but all the success that the HABS have enjoyed and will enjoy this year are in part due to the great play you have brought (thanks for the great goals this year, sometimes I wonder how you can that small hole large enough for a puck) and personality I am sure you bring with you to the locker room.

doug's picture
you know, this guy was supposed to be the replacement for smolinski who was a replacement for radek bonk. my point is, the team is essentially the same as last year plus alex tanguay and george laraque and minus a third line center and mark streit. yes it hurts, but if this is the linch pin that was holding us together. . . we were in worse shape than i thought. lawyergirl77 says below that this is the most heartwrenching injury. that says a lot about how bad the season's seemingly gone. he played here for almost 50 games of what has been a forgettable season thus far. i'm surely not going to bring out the white flag; team has to show that it can handle adversity, and no excuses. bruins' marco sturm is a solid player out for the season. . . and last year they were missing bergeron and made the playoffs. i don't want this recent injury bug to be remembered like the flu a few years ago. if we lose now it's because we haven't heart. . . and i hope there's no revisionist history if we miss the playoffs.

D - You forgot Mr.Boone's favourite Michael Ryder who we got nothing for.

Hey, how come everyone forgets the Isles All Star defenseman Mark Streit? Poor guy can't even get respect after punching the big ticket. LOL

I think the depressing thing about Lang going down is that he wasn't the first choice of many posters, myself included, but he was exceeding pretty much all of our expectations. You are absolutely correct that where this team finishes this season will be determined by how much heart they have. That's not such a bad thing either. No team contends for the Stanley Cup on talent alone.
