Latendresse and Breezer are still listed on the 22 man roster. Dandenault has been cleared to play but apparently not available due to the roster issue. We need defenseman Guy, what's happening?
habs 4 - 2, lapps pots the empty netter in a very close game! I also am in agreement that the farm should not be sold, the lang injury has taken out of top spot contention and there is no need to lose players that will probably be starters in the lineup come 2012.
Submitted by Habstilidie on Tue, 02/03/2009 - 19:27.
My take on the current habs situation is somewhat different than the average fan. Before the season started, I made it very clear to myself not to completely fall for this Centennial Year hoopla of "this is our year, it must happen now or never". That thought has actually kept me sane through these obviously trying time for Les Boys. Our core players have been falling hard one by one with serious injuries, which has given way to the youth movement that BG has worked so hard to construct. I never thought for one second that we were a lock as a cup contender this year. To me, it all depended on injuries again. Well, now we find ourselves in this quagmire of a situation, where the majority of us are in a knee jerk freefall! Pull the trigger! The crowd says.. I say, don't do it Bob. Don't fold to the fan pressure, it would still be there even if Vinny came to town. I am on the side of NOT giving away our future for any stud in this league. Of course, if the right deal was put in front of us, do it Bob, but don't mortgage our future for a rental or a future financial liability.
Think of it this way: 2 weeks ago, we were in a better position to trade for Vinny, as we still had Lang. But now, to get Vinny, it would take yet ANOTHER center(Pleks) +++ just to POSSIBLY get the deal done. We just don't have the depth right now to pull it off. Also, take a step back and realize that trading for numero quatre right now would most likely NOT bring us to the promised land, because we would still be dealing with some long term injuries, as well as a lack of depth due to the trade.
If we can get Boumeester for a good price ,picks and MAYBE 1 prospect(not Subban), DO IT. But please don't think about trading the farm for a UFA that won't sign here come years end.
That's my rant and my 2.7 cents from the peanut gallery.
Bleu, Blanc et Rouge gushes from my every pour, but not just for this year, forever.

Douglas, It's so nice to see that you've come out of hiding and made one of your famous posts'. Thanks for that, you hit it right on the button.
Ali B, I too am tired of the whole Franco/Anglo thing... Bottom line, is Montreal has become quite a diverse city with a surge of people from all backgrounds and walks of life. That's what makes this city so incredible (I could do without the -4000000 degree weather and the 6000 cm of snow though.....) but all that to say is that we have a diverse fan base for an even diverse hockey team.
I love all MY habs and my HIO'ERS!!!
Big Red for PM!
I agree with ABSOLUTELY everything in your post.
The point in building a deep team, is to have constant flow of young players coming through the system in case we lose players to injuries or to free agency. You don't strive to build a deep team only to trade it away.
I agree that should a good deal present itself, that would see us pick up a quality player without giving up too much.

I fully agree with you and that's what I've been saying all along.
The world will not end if our team doesn't lift the Cup this year.
I'm also getting pretty tired to see same posters willing to give away 4-6 players + picks etc just to get Lecavalier.
Granted that he's an elite player and if we had him in our team, that would be nice but he's not right because: a) too expensive; b) too long of a contract and c) there won't be anybody left to play in the team after we try to satisfy TBay's way too ridiculous demands. He's only a player (ONE = 1), not a line and not a team and there are no single player (including Ovechkin and Crosby) that can win the Cup by themselves. In fact neither did it last year.
I'm also getting pretty friggin tired of people mentioning franco/anglo fans in that respect, being a fan of a team is not in the monopoly of francophones or anglophones or any other ethnic group, anyone whose heart is with the Habs is a fan. Same goes for N.American vs European players. If they are wearing the Habs uniform they're my players, PERIOD.
Cheers,
PS: your 2.7 cents: is it because the loony is down to 80 cents now? :-)

Doug- very positive post, nicely done. Your quite right about our youth. A lot of work goes into scouting and then the development process. We need them and we will keep them and the future looks very bright.
I did get caught up in thinking that we had a shot at competing for the cup this year with what we had starting out. It looked very promising, but we are only around the 12th best team in the 30 team league. Good but not good enough.
We are all about the draft and grow from within philosophy, which I am all for. Over the next 3 years we will improve as we promote our youth when ready.
Bob "foldin under pressure", Aytcheteedee?
Bob Gainey? Bob Gainey folding under pressure of ANY KIND?
No. Bob Gainey is the one who APPLIES the pressure, Aytcheteedee.
Don't worry about Bob folding under the pressure.
Better off worryin' about the NEW GUY he gets folding under the pressure.
Don't worry. Your sanity is now even MORE secured, sir.

I've seen many complaining about Laraque being on the club, has anyone else noticed how many Habs have been injured while he's been on the IR though? How many players did we lose to blatant cheap shots this weekend alone and not a damned thing was done about any of them? This team needs to start standing up for themselves and each other and lightweight d-men like Brisebois, just won't cut it. They need to keep O'Byrne up (at least he did something small in Boston after the cheap shot on Latendresse) until they manage to find an offensive d-man with some muscle (Jovanovski?), and need to try to find a rugged, power forward who can score a bit and drop some chumps when they act up (Doan, Vinny, Horton?) since Plek, AK, BigTits, Hig, and crew on the first 2 lines just have no desire to stand up for themselves or worse, their team mates.
Obviously with 2 of these names being in the same spot, my own personal opinion would be to start dealing with Phoenix, who seems to be in the process of prepping to fold the franchise potentially anyway, so money may be of interest over prospects coming back to their owner?
You're reachin', Nelly.
Don't remember Big George being there last year and were we not one of the least injured teams in the league?

Just a few things to remember from the 92-93 season:
- Feb 3, 1993 - beginning of a 9-1-1 streak.
- Breezer patrolling the blueline as a solid #8 d-man.
- We host the All-Star Game.
- "those we must not name" win the division...cough*bruins*cough.
- We finish 4th in the East.
- Buffalo SWEEPS "those that we must not name" in the first round.
Just a few things to think about from this season:
- TODAY IS FEB. 3 --> 9-1-1 streak anyone??
- Breezer is STILL patrolling the blueline as a solid #8 d-man.
- We just hosted the All-Star Game.
- "those we must not name" are leading the division.
- We currently sit 4th in the East.
- Buffalo is in 7th, one spot away from 8th, and a first round matchup with "those we must not name"....broom anyone?
...oh, i almost forgot, in 93 we won the whole bloody thing!!
This is not 1993, but let's get some positive vibes going here, there's 31 games left!!

Wow Muller, Savard, Carbonneau, Damphousse, Roy, Ramage, Odelin, Skrudland, Leeman, Ewen, Leclair, Schneider, Desjardins, Bellows, Haller, Hill, and all the others. Except for Carbonneau and ...well except for Carbonneau each of those guys would go, and all were great players.
How on earth did Serge Savard manage to assemble a team like that.
Wow, thanks for the memories.
heard it's a decoy. If Gainey was about to make a deal, do you think he would spread a rumor regarding that player? we all know he's very tight lipped and you can't pry anything from his mind.

I want to thank all of you unresponsive people as while I was there, I met a beauty. Thanks HIO as this friday is going to be great, and if the habs play sat i might miss it. Obrian is my favorite player now
D'rather have your new girl on my team than Obrian (or whatever).

Hey Ace. I read your earlier post, and agree with you but also know there is no way Boring Bob will do it. Congrats on the good luck at the beach.
A lot of names are being tossed around with Lang's injury. I feel that Gainey should make a pitch at Bouwmeester even if it does cost them Subban or Higins etc. If that doesnt work, a guy like Keith Tkatchuk can help us out a lot, as well as Doug Weight.
Gainey has been running the phones, and there's no doubt about that. I don't see a trade until the deadline day, but Gainey won't stand around watching TSN.
Tkachuk can get bent.
I flick my fingers underneath my chin in his general direction.

Keith Tkatchuk has apparently given a list of five teams that he would accept a trade to and the Habs are not one of them. Sorry can't remember exactly the teams but I think NYR and Philly were two of them.
An anecdote from someone I know who attended a Coyotes training camp. Tkachuk had a special 'meeting' with rookies and new members. He gave them the two rules of being on the team:
1) "Give me the puck"
2) "Obey rule #1"
. . . might answer the question about him as a team player.
We fans have to face the harsh reality of the free agency situation with regards to Montreal. As much as we love the Habs, many players in the NHL would not make us their top choice as to where to play. That is why I still believe our best and maybe only chance to land an impact player is through a trade....ie. VINNY. Rick Nash, JBow and the other free agents coming up will not consider the Habs. Their loss.
Yeah, it's unfortunate. Maybe the new arena in Brossard will sway some UFA here, lol.
But if Gainey can get Vinny at any cost, he knows he will have to do it. Excluding giving Markov or Komisarek of course :P
Big news out of Ottawa today. They just hired a guy named Inspector Clouseau to run their bench.

This injury only confirms to me, that Breezer's brain is in his lower body, because he has been having brain farts all year. It just leaves me to wonder why the Hab's Chief Proctologist just noticed this now?
I wonder what it is about 7th D-men that make them natural whipping boys for the fan base? I remember a few years back you couldn't walk ten feet in Toronto without hearing someone cursing the very name of Aki Berg. Who was no great shakes, but then again, he was the seventh (last pairing at best) defenceman.
Don't get me wrong, I love to engage in some good ol' fashioned Breezeby Bashin'...I mean, who doesn't? But does he really deserve the heaping scorn accorded to him? I kinda doubt it. He's played too much this year, I think everybody can agree on that, but he's not the worst player to ever lace 'em up or anything. At this point in his career, he is what he is.
I think it might have something to do with how difficult it is to gauge defensive play on television. Unless you're paying close attention, you don't often see all the little things that a defenceman does right in a game, but hoo boy can you see the bad plays as clear as day.
Submitted by VintageFan on Tue, 02/03/2009 - 17:51.
If you're going to get all factual and reasonable, you are going to spoil everyone's fun, You might even cause some of the posters to be logical and consistent. And that's just mean!
what can we do to improve this team big time? 2 Dmen would help and of course a big offensive center. can anyone tell me who our last sniper was, and what year? I'm talking about a 40+ scorer. was it Richer? wow I miss a big time scorer. I like AK but can't ever see him scoring more than 30 goals, just lacking that intensity. I still think we need to do everything possible to get Lecavalier. on D, how about Witt, Havelid from Atlanta, or maybe Bergeron from Minn?
issue with vinny is.cap hit and contract length and we have to give up so many players to get him apparently.
witt... i like him..but whats his cap hit and contract status same as Havelid/Bergeron.
in fact its really about the cap these days..have you seen many trades this year. i still think we need some additions even if we have a very good last 2 months.
other posters can comment but we have likely beat the vinny thing to pieces.
These new long term contracts are designed to work around the cap hit. The length is a red herring. No one expects these players to keep playing for the whole length of the contract. Say a player is worth 8 million on the open market, to lower the cap hit the player and team work out a longer term contract. The contract is front loaded but the yearly cap hit is lower than 8 million, more like 6 to 6.5 million. In the last two or three years of the contract the player is taking a salary of 1 to 1.5 million, yes the cap hit remains the same but it is assumed the player will have retired by that time and is bought out. The NHL is in fact worried about this work around of the cap hit and intends to bring it up with the players association and owners. Vinny is scheduled to make 1.5 and 1 million in the last two years of his contract. The Vinny deal probably is more about the players that would have to be moved to the Bolts than about the money.
i agree about the players going the other way the asking price is high.
not sure the cap hit is 6 -6.5m i heard it was around 7-8m. but whatever the front load and decreases with time.
ur shooting for the whole enchlada ..i just cannot see it happening given BG track record..you would gut , i mean gut the whole team man..never happen for all those guys.
read about the salary cap.
Submitted by crabvader on Tue, 02/03/2009 - 17:29.
Bergeron might no be huge, but he's an offensive Dman, with a good shot, and could be the QB on our PP. And Gainey is good friends with Risebrough, so maybe... as fas as Bouwmeester is concerned, forget about it. I heard he's from Alberta and wants to go back there, and lots of rumors of a deal with Edmonton. Gainey won't get us an impact player, just not his style. probably a middle of the pack Dman and maybe Guerin, Weight, Comrie from Atlanta. The player he should pick up in the summer is Chris Neil, who's UFA. tough, can score, and not afraid to mix it up.
I'm really worried about all our UFA's. What's going to happen if they all walk, and we can't sign a UFA? sorry, but this team worries me. I mean it's not like players are banging down the doors to come here. trade or draft picks seems to be the only avenue.
I don't want to upset people, but I really love Boston's team. they just seem to have all the elements needed to win it all. So why won't it happen here? have no answers.
be optimistic..but ur concerns are shared by many on this site.the good thing is we do have players down in steel town that are and will make a impact this year and years to come.the salary cap requires almost forces teams to work and develop from within and of course adding some impact players when possible.
as far as ufa's are concerned..saku, komo, tanguay, kovy (jury is out)will likely be re-signed. the others like dandy, higgins begin, kosto and others i have no idea but likely not, maybe some trades are in the works.
were an upcoming team actually closer than alot of people think to being an elite team if we play hard with more grit and get hot goaltending.
just my opinion.
The Breezer could very well walk away with the Norris Trophy this year. (Note: I didn't say that he would win in, just that if he shows up to the awards ceremony he could walk away with it.)

Beyond top prospect Erik Karlsson and goalie Brian Elliott, the Senators’ constant production of top young players has slowed to a trickle. The fact that Heatley, Spezza, Alfredsson and Fisher take up more than $23 million in cap space proves that after making the Stanley Cup final, they failed to learn from the mistakes the Tampa Bay Lightning made after winning the Stanley Cup.

Haha, yeah. I'll take Spezza. He seems like he needs a player's coach. Carbo is a good candidate for that. He doesn't seem to want to play when coaches talk out of their asses. Gimme the Speez!
Spezza is overated. He turns the puck over at the blueline on like 80% of his rushes and is a defensive liability. He does get his points, but who wouldn't get points playing with Dany Heatley and Daniel Alfredson. I would like Mike Fisher, but not at the 4.5 million he makes now.
Submitted by crabvader on Tue, 02/03/2009 - 17:31.
And he has what...5 goals? 6 goals this season? Spezza is a brash player and needs to have a coach AND gm who have faith in him. Unlike his situation in Ottawa. He gets ALL the heat over there and takes all the flak. It would take it's toll on ANY player. I think it would be a fresh start in Montreal and he would come in with a load of confidence.
if spezza was willing to change his game and become more defense minded. also he is the youngest of alfreedson/heatley and finally a change of scenery might be what he needs so i might consider taking him...maybe.

About Dave Stubbs has been a sportswriter since 1976, which was roughly a decade after he wore the first of many holes through the knees of his jeans playing nets in road hockey (using a modified butterfly popularized by Hall of Famer Glenn Hall). He still has the welts to show on his shins from that rotten, frozen orange ball.
Stubbs kept thick hockey scrapbooks filled with game summaries and Gazette and Montreal Star stories, collected dozens of Bee Hive Corn Syrup photos and put a fortune of hockey cards through the spokes of his bikes. First book ever owned: Scrubs On Skates, the classic by Scott Young (Neil's dad).
Stubbs's fantasy is to travel back in time to the 1950s and watch the great Canadiens dynasty that won five consecutive Stanley Cups. Or a decade earlier, to watch Elmer Lach centre Rocket Richard and Toe Blake on the fearsome Punch Line. Or at least to get Rogie Vachon into the Hockey Hall of Fame – where he belongs.
