Losing streak bowls over Canadiens
Habs clear the air with heated team meeting

The Canadiens knew they had an 11 am bus from their Edmonton hotel on Tuesday, presumably to practice.

But plans have a way of being changed, and team management decided that getting away from hockey after Monday night's debacle in Calgary might not be a bad thing.

So the players got on the bus and went bowling.

Here's eight-plus minutes of the voice of Saku Koivu, the only Canadien who stopped to speak in the hotel lobby at 3:10 local time when the bus pulled back in.

And here is head coach Guy Carbonneau in English and in French.

News and audio coming from Wednesday's morning skate of both the Canadiens and Oilers.

Come On Carbo! BOWLING???????

xaverian001's picture
Does Carey have a problem with his glove because no one can test it in practice? Is there anyone on the Habs that can actually pick a corner right now??? I think once our offensive players sort themselves out then our goaltending will come around after they actually have some good practices.

In response to your earlier post (to my post) your right about the corners. I had a scrap paper that I was putting lines on when my wife asked what I was doing I told her I was noting the battles they were losing on the along the boards I stopped at 15 to 2 for Calgary.

Wow thats bad, 15-2. Great tell all stat. Thanks for sharing.

Saku's brilliant! Q: "do you feel there's anybody on the team right now who's not happy?" A: "I hope nobody's happy right now!" Way to deflect the question and make a good point at the same time. Unfortunately, the reporter asked the question more precisely again, but a good try by Saku... ___________________________ 'tis the season to be jolly

The Antichamber guy's are on dot's ,was I the only one to notice that the Flames were a bigger team and forced their will on the Canadiens. Our team at the beginning of the year did not play this way because they were well rested but playing bigger ,tougher teams have finished the Habs .And that's why all the injury's as well.

HABZ24's picture
gainey better change his STUPID, HARMFULL policy and sign the players he needs or our future during the season. this is the major part of the problem, players need to know there future.

The Cat's picture
Not only that, he could secure them at a probably cheaper price.

I would like to see Halak in as he put in a pretty strong performance the other night right before the defense took the rest of the night off midway through the 2nd. ONCE A HAB, FOREVER A HAB!!!

Halak should get the start again so he don't loose his confidence. Price has not played Edmonton yet. Maybe that would be the only reason to start Price. Has Halak ever played Edmonton? I don't think so.

The Habs going bowling is part of it's history - back in the 70's/80's when Irving Grundman was invovled with the team he owned bowling centres in Montreal (Laurentian Lanes) and in Ottawa......

I think we have a really good team. nothing should be changed, all we need is tanguay back and some internal pressure by one goalie stepping up, or another D like Dandenault challenging someone for a job on the D line. Just some internal pressure because our team is not as bad as our record is in the last 10 games. Heres hoping they prove me right in the home stretch! GO HABS GO!

I was watching "Antichambre " last night and a couple of the panel were saying what I seem to have noticed the last week or so that the players are playing like they are afraid of making mistakes. I am and have been a KOMI fan however I have not seen him make as many puck handling(clearing, passes) mistakes as he has made in the last two weeks. The shooters seem to be gripping their sticks a little tighter and missing open nets, Also as always when a team is in a slump the puck just does not bounce your way, it may roll off the end of the stick, or the rebound will end up in your skates or you hit the post. A slump is something EVERY TEAM will go thru during the season OUR HABS will come out of it they may fall another spot or two or three BUT THEY WILL COME OUT OF IT. Price and Halak are to good to keep letting 4/5 goals a game The defence just has to go back to basics make the simple pass. And the forwards well have some fun. Who knows for the next 4 or 5 games you score a goal collect 25.00 from each player (if defence scores 50.00) make it fun again.

The Cat's picture
These points are true, but to me theres bigger points to address, theres no forechecking or backchecking. Granted I didnt watch the whole Calgary game but the parts I did see, I only saw Higgins win a battle for the puck along the boards.

Habsrule1's picture
I think the team should put up $1000 for the player who scores the winning goal in every game for a couple weeks! Seems extreme but it might be fun!? Go Habs Go!! "I can't hear what Jeremy(Roenick) is saying because my Stanley Cup rings are in my ears" - Patrick Roy

OT How many years has it been since Chicago made the playoffs? edit: Ok, if my research is correct the last time was in 2001-2002 and before that from 1997 and beforehand they pretty much made it consecutively. They are doing pretty good this year.

Chorske's picture
They're going to surprise. They've been my #2 team forever, and this year it looks like they're going to finally live up to their promise. I'll bet they'll be adding depth my dealing Khabby near the deadline for another vet forward to provide guidance in the playoffs. If they get past the first round, the kids will settle down and I think they'll go deep.

Here we have this weeks stats on where we place in a 30 team league. Goals against--159- we are in 20th place, down from 11th place last week. Total Points----64- we are in 9th place, down from 8th place last week. Goals For------164- we are in 9th place, down from 8th place last week. So the biggest change is our goals against, and that is a total team stat and needs to be addressed first thing if this team is going to start to move forward..

Here in Washington DC they pretty much leach Ovechkin alone now. They saw that having him do all these press events and advertising hurt his game. He cannot focus on HOCKEY. I think it might be similar in Montreal with all the Centennial celebrations going on. So those of you who know Montreal like I do you cannot say playing in Boston, New York and New Jersey is the same as playing in Montreal. Look at the toll Crosby took last season for pretty much doing EVERYTHING for the NHL advertising.

Bugs's picture
Yeah, yeah, yeah, I heard about that. Leeching. That's not a bad idea to leech players, puts special enzymes in their bloodstream and all that, thins it out or something, flows better. Old school treatment. I'm all for it. Peace Out _____________________________________________________ Lord Bugs Potter, esq. Well, their play in the 2nd and 3rd periods have been in the gutter.. We tend to look good in the 1st (most of the time), and goal tending seems to be in shape then as well.. Captain Koivu gave a great interview. Well spoken and honest. This guy deserves the 'C'. The team is privileged to have him as their leader. Glad to see they had fun and enjoyed something not related to hockey--whther they call it team bonding or not, it is just that. It's good to occasionally take a brief pause from the regular routine and mindset of your profession. In spite of the collective mental break and fun at the lanes, the fact is it won't be easy to pull things together. The team knows that--a good sign. I simply hope they have enough pride and resolve to make it happen.

Bugs, you obviously don't know what the penguin represents, and it's not a sports icon if that's what you're trying to hint. With the crafty wit you've displayed on many of your posts, I thought you'd be sharper than that.

Bugs's picture
Crafty wit? Think you may have confused me with someone else; ain't nuthin witty about my craftiness. Ignorance should not be punished more than it's actual state, Gee-eff. How am I to know that the penguin doesn't represent a penguin? Squat penguin with a quaker hat on, ok...ummm, don't tell me...ummm, the...the Montreal Canadiens? I don't know anything! Of course it'd be easy, that's why I asked. What, you're gonna be difficult about this? Tellme, tellme, tellme; I don't like not knowin stuff. Not a quaker hat? Dave Stubbs's picture
I'd suggest to you it wasn't team bonding at all. It simply was getting away from hockey for a day. They weren't jumping out of airplanes or involved in some military-like exercise where you depend on your teammate to save your butt. They were bowling. I've had a chuckle reading some of the comments from out west since I posted the bowling "news" yesterday, people absolutely destroying the team for having bowled a few strings instead of going to Medicine Hat to skate 100 km outdoors as punishment for stinking out Calgary. This is an INCREDIBLY long season. I think Koivu said it best: it's more the mental fatigue that wears players down at this stage. They'll report to the arena this morning, they'll work hard, and they'll win tonight, or they won't. But the result won't be attributable to the fact they bowled for a few hours yesterday. (But if I write like crap today, maybe I'M the one who should have gone bowling yesterday.) Dave Stubbs

I don't know, Dave. I still think it may do some good to have gone out together...as a team. I know Lafleur has not said too many things that help the team, but I think he's right that it's not time for cliques....it's time to be a team....22 for 1 and 1 for 22....or something like that. Go Habs Go!! "I can't hear what Jeremy(Roenick) is saying because my Stanley Cup rings are in my ears" - Patrick Roy

Dave Stubbs's picture
I agree absolutely that a day together, away from the rink, might help this team. I'm still trying to imagine the kid at the shoe-rental counter when the Canadiens walked in at noon on a Tuesday. And no player will admit to me to having pushed the reset button on the lane just as another player released a ball -- c'mon, we've all done it -- to have the gate drop in front of the pins just as the 16-pounder arrives. If this team is really tired, then Boston and Washington, New jersey should be on respirators by now. They rarely put in 60 minutes, this is their first tough road trip, they roll 4 lines, so I ask you, tired from what?

Dave Stubbs's picture
Unless you're around this team day in and day out, Cat, you can't possibly imagine what it's like to be a Canadien. This isn't to cut anyone any slack, it's just to state a fact. I'm not on the road a lot like my colleague Pat Hickey, but just to get a taste of it even in a few days -- I go on to Vancouver while Pat picks them up in Denver tomorrow -- has been very enlightening. Players are accountable pretty much every minute of the day, to their team, to the fans staked out in front of hotels and in airports, to obligations of their own doing or the team's. Then they have the media in their faces. When Carbo walked up to the lobby doors of the Edmonton hotel yesterday, he just shook his head almost a little angrily that a half-dozen media were in the lobby, waiting for their return. We have a job to do, he knows it, the players know it, but still... every step is scrutinized. That's why there's mental fatigue. Dave Stubbs

Thanks for answering Dave. Yes I realize theyre under scrutiny and the 100th thingy must tough to bear all the time, its just I dont often see most members of this team dealing with the press because of language issues.
