Price dumps red pads, back in white

Carey Price, one of the least superstitious goaltenders you'll find, has dumped his month-old red pads and is returning to the white ones in which he enjoyed considerably more success.

The new pads, which will feature the CH logo above the knee as it appears on the red pair, are shipping today from the Vaughn factory in London, Ont.

We profiled Price's graphically redesigned white pads last March in The Gazette; that story appears below. From it:

It's not a lack of imagination that colours his pads white, save the trim. It's all about deceiving shooters, who might have trouble distinguishing pads from ice and boards, and with the optical illusion of making himself look huge.

Price pads equipment résumé
'This is a little like Christmas,' Habs goalie says
as he rips wrapping off his fifth pair of season

DAVE STUBBS
The Gazette

They've nearly reached the end of their two-month life, shrunken by battle, blackened by pucks, scarred by sticks, slashed by skates.

And yet, Carey Price's goalie pads didn't look too shabby yesterday - until they were propped up beside the factory-fresh, graphically redesigned pair he'll begin to break in today and be wearing in games as early as this weekend.

Then they looked like hell.

"This is a little like Christmas," Price said in the Bell Centre dressing room after morning practice, a hulking, 20-year-old kid eagerly inspecting his new custom-made Vaughn Velocity pads pulled from a duffle bag by Jorg Achenbach, the company's pro services rep.

"It always seems like Christmas when I get new pads."

The gifts didn't end there. Price also received three new gloves - two blockers and a practice-model trapper, all customized with extra padding. The lightweight, synthetic pads are virtually identical to the old ones, except for the flashy design on the shin. Gone is a blue and red swirl, replaced by what appears to be two licking-flame M's.

No matter how the design is interpreted, Price loves the look.

And if you think he's excited, wait until the minor-, garage-league and semi-pro goalies of the world get wind of it.

On goalie-populated Internet forums and bulletin boards, where all things netminding are rumoured, discussed and debated, Price's new gear isn't likely to cause a ripple of interest, but a tsunami.

The graphic scheme is expected to be available at retail stores sometime this summer, at roughly $1,700 for the pads and $500 and $325, respectively, for the trapper and blocker.

The interest among goalies in what's worn by the top pros, says Achenbach, "is goofy, crazy ... Star Wars hype times 10."

At the 2007 All-Star Game, Calgary's Mikka Kiprusoff wore much-speculated, newly designed Vaughn Velocity pads onto Dallas ice for the morning skate. Twenty minutes later, photos were flying through cyberspace, with goalie-typists crashing the 'net - harder than a playoff forward - in a rush to offer their online critique.

Price's new pads have not been similarly anticipated. Even he hadn't seen them until Achenbach arrived yesterday from the factory in London, Ont.

Vaughn, an industry leader with Reebok in high-performance goaltending equipment, includes Price and the Canadiens' Jaroslav Halak in its stable.

Price has been with the company since graduating from midget hockey into major junior, viewed then by Vaughn as a fine prospect. A shrewd bet, considering Price's record-setting 2007 world junior and Calder Cup victories and rocketship ride into the NHL this season.

Achenbach, in hockey for nearly three decades and once a preteen stickboy for the Winnipeg Jets, oversaw Price's first custom-made pads during the goalie's 2005 draft year.

Today, Price is a Vaughn-endorsed, contracted player, a goalie on whom the company builds part of its marketing campaign. The "Carey Pad" will be a hit with the impressionable netminders, young and old.

If he's hard on shooters, Price is brutal on his pads. His new custom hybrid Velocity V2/V3, the NHL-maximum 38 inches long and 11 inches wide, is his fifth pair this season. It's a consumption borne of his bulky body, style of play and gruelling demands of today's game.

"I had a growth spurt one year and went through three pairs in a single season," Price recalled. "An expensive year for Dad."

The goalie figures his once-goaltender father, Jerry, spent $15,000 on equipment for his son before he was signed by Vaughn.

"This is the first time I've gone through so many pairs," Price said.

He knows when his pads are nearing their end when they "get a little floppy," losing the preferred stiffness he manages with his tremendous hip and length strength. Once in his new pair, he'll likely autograph his current one for charity auction, with another stored in reserve.

Price is remarkably agile for a man who's 6-foot-3 and 225 pounds, and his equipment reflects his needs.

His "knee stack" is a single block, not horizontal pads as in a retail model, to form a more stable landing pad, and there is additional wraparound protection for his enormous calves.

The blocker has extra finger padding, and his trapper is also reinforced.

The goalie will soften up a new trapper in a high/low-tech way - he'll lay them beneath a towel atop the medical staff's hydroculator, a machine used to superheat therapy packs, and let the steam work its magic.

"Five minutes of that and it's as good as an old baseball mitt," he said.

It's not a lack of imagination that colours his pads white, save the trim. It's all about deceiving shooters, who might have trouble distinguishing pads from ice and boards, and with the optical illusion of making himself look huge. It's stunning to compare the massive Price in his NHL pads with the average-size Price in the black Vaughns he wore at world juniors.

Not that this translates to retail - the recreational goalie has a distaste for puck marks on his pads, a concern not shared by a pro who replaces his often.

"There are goalies who will blame their equipment if they struggle," Achenbach said. "That's not Carey. He's very easy to work with, clear about specifications and about what he wants. There's no confusion."

That attention to detail perfectly describes Price's overall approach to his job.

And for one very happy goalie yesterday, there was nothing like that new-pad smell.

Price should have the white pads with a big "C" on one and a "P" on another. At least it also helps bring back to Price in case he loses them. ---------- "Old-time hockey?" - Steve Hanson (Slap Shot)

its kinda like how that optometrist convinced marc andre fleury to switch his yellow pads for white ones because yellow is the quickest color we can identify. hockey is a game of inches when you compete with the best in the world and any advantage helps. pittsburgh went on to the stanley cup finals much thanks to fleury and his white pads. i guess tim thomas goes against this rule but he just kinda flops around anyways relying more on acrobatics and less on positioning

Thank God Pricey went back to the White Pads. Look out now. Price will be better than ever now!!! I prayed last night that Price would go back the the White Pads. My prayers were answered. Welcome back Price. Do us proud and take us to the Spring Dance... I wonder if anyone told him to go back the the White Pads?

On the lighter side, can you please pray that I win the lotto tonight (my prayers were not going anywhere)? Of course another prayer for the Habs win would be great too. Cheers, Ali B.

I'm on Kovalevs side for sure!!!!!! This is rediculous.

I don't think anybody in their right mind wouldn't want a motivated and passionate Kovalev around. He's extremely talented when he decides to play. If only he brought his A game to every game. If we're going to have a shot of going far, we need Kovalev at his best. Otherwise if he isn't our best player he's hurting us. What is it with Russian disappearing acts and the Habs lol... Remember Vlad Malakhov? That guy had tremendous talent but would only show up to play with it once in a blue moon. Speaking of Malakhov... We gave up Muller, Schneider and Darby for him and Turgeon.

rut1212's picture
Finally! Those red pads weren't working for him.

bakersresin's picture
Keeping Kovalev off the team lowers his value on the market for any possible trade. Also, it lowers the talent on our team! Also, what does that say to all the other prime talent in the league who were scared to come to Montreal in the first place. Nobody is gonna want to play here now! Gainey is a joke. Whether you like Kovalev or not that roster move made NO SENSE. Gainey had the choice between his inexperienced, incompetent coach or the "head case", talent rich, point producer, Kovalev and he chose his friend!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Gainey made the dumbest move ever.

A. Berke's picture
Since you are confirming that "you're no longer a Habs fan", I suggest you stop polluting HIO and wasting our time with your rants. And BTW, don't let the door knob hit you on your way out and see ya! Ali B.

bakersresin's picture
I make legitmate points that could possibly be argued point by point. Your rebuttal consists of "shut up". You are like a little kid.

A. Berke's picture
Sorry to break this to you but you are way over your head and hardly in a position to call me "you are like a little kid". And yes, pray tell, if you're no longer a fan, then what are you doing here at HIO? If you're a fan, then get some DECENCY in your posts instead of inane rants over and over again. Calling other posters "IDIOTS" and making statements like "Koivu is ***" is NOT exactly making legitimate points, it's crap and you're polluting the place. Ali B.

Olay Olay Olay's picture
Sure he's talented but he's no point producer. So why is a guy as good as he is not producing? it's simple, h just doesn't feel like it, but not only does he not want to skate but he also doesn't want to pass either, this prevents his line mates from making any kind of impact. Do you really want a guy who doesn't want to play in your lineup? In terms of hiring your friends...maybe your right but in case you haven't noticed, every GM or coach in the league does the same thing, look at Burke and Keenan, they're the poster boys for this.

captaink4life's picture
Newsflash: Kovalev is not a superstar. He never was, and he never will be. To suggest otherwise would just be silly. He has proven to be nothing more than a good player with flashes of greatness. A secondary scorer that needs to play on a team with REAL superstars to excel. Who cares if his market value was lowered? Do you honestly believe that GM's around the league weren't already aware of how terribly he's been playing lately? Bob Gainey is a proven winner. As is Guy Carbonneau. Kovalev is a proven inconsistent, uninspired, talent rich (the only part of your post that I actually agree with) hockey player. _____________________________ Koivu for Prime Minister :) Drive for 25!!

Hey bakersresin, Sorry to see you go (insert sarcasm here) maybe you should put your name in with the leafs, they could always use more fans like you, or better yet, try out for management. I'm sure a guy who is as insightful as you would fit in perfectly over there.

Look at their salary and compare their production on the ice. Kovalev becomes the obvious choice! And Koivu is our dead weight captian!

Olay Olay Olay's picture
There's no player I wanted to see succeed more than Kovy, but even after his first season with the team, it was pretty evident of what kind of player he was going to be. Everyone keeps bringing up how great he was last year and I agree, he was great, but so what?. So now he gets to take a year long breather because he had one good year? Is it his fault the team is losing? no, does he have a large part in it? yes. Everyone in that locker room looks up to him and respects him so when he gives a half assed effort, that mentality begins to spread, even on a subconscious level. To say that you'd take Kovy over Koivu tells me you need to stop looking at the stats sheets and highlight reels and start watching the actual games. I guarantee Koivu will not disappoint.

I am no longer a Habs fan so long as Gainey keeps a coach that has no experience, that rolls 4 lines like he coaches a fair play Peewee team, who pisses off his players, who has no system..... and a captain that can't skate, has no shot, can't keep a dressing room from fracture, and who is worse than Kovalev when it comes to production vs salary. THE CANADIENS ARE A FUKEN JOKE!!! IT IS ALL ABOUT LIVING IN THE PAST AND HIRING YOUR FRIENDS. BRING BACK KOVALEV AND FIRE CARBONNEAU AND TAKE THE "C" FROM KOIVU ONLY THEN WILL I BE A FAN AGAIN. You are an idiot. I explained in detail what it would take for me to get back on the bandwagon. And my attitude is my perogative. It is yours and the rest that causes our team to lose year after year.

How classy and eloquent. Resort to name calling instead of defending your position with thoughtful dialogue. Definitely shouldn't be any place for this sort of thing on this forum. Here's my position. Your attitude symbolizes everything that is wrong with the stereotypical rabid habs fan. You damn the team to hell the second things don't go according to plan. You're ready to throw everybody under the bus while you stomp your feet demanding trades, firings, etc. When the team is doing well, you're the type of fan that is already talking about preparing the stanley cup parade down Ste-Catherines street. Your attitude most certainly is your perogative. I will absolutely not claim otherwise. Either way, you're not a habs fan anymore so maybe you should visit www.mapleleafs.com now friend :)

HabsFan2's picture
Umm, we, the real fans, don't want fans like you on the bandwagon. It's one thing to offer an opinion, it's quite another to freak out like you're doing. Even if the Habs lose the rest of their games (hopefully not), life will still go on, at least for me it will. ---------------------------------------------- "I have come home." - Patrick Roy

It doesn't seemed entirely far fetched that the colour of the pads might make it easier for shooters to find the holes. It's still Carey's job to fill those holes, however. As for the forwards, if they don't come out fired up tonight ... Those of you who would take this version of Kovalev over Koivu only started watching hockey a couple of Octobers ago and stopped watching or paying attention to hockey before last year's playoffs.

Hoegarden's picture
Since this article is about Price, I just wonder how the Habs are taking care of our franchise player. If I recall, Crosby moved in with Mario when he came up. Also, Vinny's father moved down to Tampa (who can blame him) to give his son fatherly advice and so on. With all due respects to our HIO members from B.C., you take a kid out of the woods (no pun intended) and let him loose in the Canadian version of the City of Lights with money to burn and you can figure the rest. Bottom line, protect your assets. Carbo's comment that he is an adult is fine with me but it's obvious that a better environment would have been beneficiary for him, like moving in with a local family and retired Habs player etc. Just my two cents on the recent comments and rumours about he, Higs and SK, the 3 amigos, burning the candle at both ends.

Maybe it,s time to bring Henri,Yvan,Big Jean,Larry etc into the dressing room and have a little father to son chat with these guys.

With the recent events in Pittsburgh and in the "Scratch my back, I'll scratch yours" category, I can see Kovy heading back to Pittsburgh, if the offer from Shero is reasonable. Pitt it also struggling and I can easily see Kovy, Malky and Gonchar and Cindy on their PP. La Presse is reporting through three "don't give my name" player agents that he has been offered around the league for at least two weeks. A deal might already be done and filed for his services. Yes, Saks is one tough cookie having gone through 6 coaches, 3 GMs and a handfull of players. I too say "there comes a time" so Saku should realize that and use his UFA status to the fullest, if he is not traded prior to trade deadline. AS a simple fan, I would love to have Tanguay signed NOW if not sooner, and would immediately put the C on his jersey. He is calm, cool and collected individual and would bring a whole new attitude to the team IMO. His experience and being a local product would also benefit the team. Let's hope this soap opera comes to it's final chapter soon. We,the fans, deserve better. I wonder if Stewee is feeling a bit of pressure replacing SK and Kovy ! Go Habs Go !

Habsrule1's picture
I pray Koivu stays, but I hope he does what feels right to him. He deserves to be playing where he wants. He's given us his all, and then some. If Koivu leaves, I think they should have no captain for a full year while deciding who is most deserving. I hope Saku retires as Habs captain in a few years. Go Habs Go!! If I chose between Kovy and Saku, I would pick Saku to leave. Whether you are a Kovy lover or hater, Habs' last season high was inspired by Kovy, not Saku. It's obvious that Saku regained the room, but what has the "C" brought to Habs?

bakersresin's picture
I competely agree. Saku has done nothing for our team. He can't skate, or shoot. He has overseen a fractured dressing room countless times. He doesn't have the respect of our talent to wear the "C". He is too old and weak right now.

From what I remember Sak had a pretty good season last year. He,s never gonna lead the team in scoring but that,s not why he,s wearing the "C" If leading the team in scoring is the criteria for the "C" then Gainey wouldn,t have worn the "C" nor would Carbo. There were alot of great players on the team in those days (hall of famers) but only one had the "C"

longbow's picture
Agree.Lafleur never had a "C" or an "A"

captaink4life's picture
And the Habs' recent woes have also been inspired by Kovy. He is not worth the trouble. How could you possibly tell the guy who gives every piece of himself season after season since 1995, battling serious injuries and insurmountable odds to leave the team so you can keep the heartless, uninspired and inconsistent primadonna? It is beyond me that some people still question Koivu's commitment to this team. _____________________________ Koivu for Prime Minister :) Drive for 25!!

lavie's picture
interestingly, Habs's woes (this round) was the same timing as Saku came back from injury.

Was it because Saku came back or because Kovy began to pout.

longbow's picture
And the 11-2-1 run was due to Lapierre's line and Langs line once Andre K was freed from kovy's line to play with his brother and Lang.

captaink4life's picture
Ok so they won some games while he was out of the lineup. If that's the logic you want to use, then how about when he got injured in the Carolina series a couple of years ago. The Habs had a 2-0 series lead and were leading 2-1 (if I remember correctly) in Game 3 when Koivu got high-sticked in the eye, resulting in an injury that would force him to miss the rest of the post-season. The Habs went on to lose that game, and the next three after it. Where was Kovalev then? The team fell apart at a critical time because they lost their leader. Koivu has been one of the most consistent players on the team this season and has probably been the best player on the ice during this slump. _____________________________ Koivu for Prime Minister :) Drive for 25!!
