As we near the 3 p.m. ET March 4 NHL trade deadline, Habs Inside/Out will publish a selection of primers and backgrounders from the league, prepared by their Communications department.

The documents will brief readers on the trade deadline and much of what has taken place in past seasons on a day that is highly anticipated by fans and sometimes dreaded by players.

We begin with a Q & A addressing some of the basic questions.

Steven L. If asking Kovi to stay home for a few days really helps him to be an effective leader for the rest of the season maybe Bob should do the same to Komi, Saku, and other struggling players to get them back on track. I have worked long hours for several weeks at a time in a stressful job and it has worn me down and made me less effective.....these guys are only human and playing for the Habs is indeed an honor but very stressful

Tampa Bay beats Boston. No crap teams in the league anymore, just teams that play harder and have good chemistry. I guess Tampa really wanted it last night and Boston slacked off?

badbalance's picture
Looks like Boston isn't the real deal after all losing 6 out of 7 last games. Looks like they just ran out of gas and Thomas the rusty tank engine lost his clumsy goaltending touch, I mean an underdog team from last year giving it all they got for 50 games this season and dont look like the team they were for the first half, I mean the Chemistry is still there but not as intense. Seems to me the only real deal team out there is San Jose who is constant with wins, losing only 2 games at home in regulation, makes the East look like a joke. Tampa was a crap team and will remain one until they give us vinny.

Drinking beers here and wishing to thank Stubb's for the cap info and all I got to say bout that is sell ,sell, sell! It's trim the fat time and RIGHT NOW....HABS AT THE GOD DANG TOP OF THE SPENDING LIST for what???the BAND AID SOLUTION ,don't work and never will(look at the goddamn world economy and the States in general)Keep the new wave ,sell the big payroll ,and get us a SUPERSTAR OR TWO....ENOUGH...And as far as the playoff's go...don't get sucked in this time so you can go in fully armed the next time and do SOME REAL HABS DAMAGE!!!

cautiousoptimist's picture
Bob has hardly been on a spending spree, and landing Lang ($4M) and Tanguay ($5.4M) at the beginning of the year was hardly a Band-Aid solution -- it was a shot at the Cup. Schneider was a great pick-up. Markov ($5.8M) gets the going rate for a player of his calibre. Hamrlik may be a little overpaid at $5.5M, but it sure didn't look that way last year, when he was rock-solid on the blueline. Together, those players (minus Schneider, whose pro-rated Habs salary is low) earn $20.7M. Add Higgins ($1.9M) and Pleks ($1.8M), who are dirt-cheap considering what they can bring to the lineup. AK46 ($3.25M) is a powerhouse and is a bargain who's signed into 2011. Koivu ($4.8M) is the heart and soul of the team, and Kovalev ($4.5M) is Kovalev. You can make the case for ditching Laraque's $1.5M, and maybe Bouillon's $1.8M, but that's not a lot of money in NHL terms. What fat exactly do you want to trim? 1. www.flickeringpictures.com - not a hockey site, but still kinda neat 2. Josh Gorges on Montreal's attack: "They're comin', they're comin' and they keep comin'. Just line after line, wave after wave..."

Xtrahabsfan's picture
I would agree with cautiousoptimist,if the Habs were a dominating team with that line-up and in or near 1st place ,but They might not make the playoffs so,strongly disagree with ya bro.Schneider is now OUR best player and he's 40,lol.....Schneider,Markov,Kovalev,Hamrlik,Lang, Tangay and Koivu ARE IN FOR A COMBINED $30 plus mil,and next year we got contracts comming up Komo etc.....Naw,screw the love in, SELL ,SELL, SELL...and build around real proven Superstars....Do ya think the Habs would have all those Cups with out THE ROCKET,BIG JEAN, OR THE FLOWER,I DON'T THINK SO....

Habsman1970's picture
I am a bit surprised at how little room we have left. I know we were burning through some cash, but I didn't think we were one of the top teams out there for burning it. I agree, if we plan on getting that 'impact player', we need to do a little housekeeping... ONCE A HAB, FOREVER A HAB!!!

Bugs's picture
Mmmm...disagree. Free agents'll still be there this summer. Go for it this year. If we lose'm all (which I doubt), ANOTHER reason to for it all. Lose'em for nothing? Lose WHO for nothing? Saku? Think he's gonna bolt outta town after 15 years? The Artiste? Where's HE gonna play? Who's gonna appreciate'm as much as we do? Tanguay? Heck, Lang and Schneider even. Where they gonna go? Lose'em HOW for nothing? Maybe package'em all together and get Crosby? I don't know. Komo is the concern; that's all. But no way did Mr.Bob Gainey put together a five-year plan only to shank it in the last months. C'mon. Peace Out _____________________________________________________ Lord Bugs Potter, esq. Thanks for the passion out of highlands bc. I agree the "economy" - its Fragile and needlessly ruthless - is FUBAR. and replaceable. LOL Go Habs. I got a girl in Kalamazoo

Completely off topic: How good is Ovechkin? Damn dude...

badbalance's picture
OMG do you have that avatar image in bigger size, if you do plz link it to me its hilarious.

Bugs's picture
Almost as good as Malkin. Peace Out _____________________________________________________ Lord Bugs Potter, esq. Earl of Fluppitburg, Baron of Fleenshire County and Knight of the Flannel Republic.

He is really good but I think he will hurt himself one of these days.

badbalance's picture
Ovechkin is too big and aware to hurt himself. Never keeps his head down, is always aware of what is going on around him. Crosby is more likely to get injured long term. Ovechkin lost teeth then came back and scored a goal, he's not human how would he get injured like one?

Nahlsy's picture
Lafleur good, maybe even better given another couple of years? I have him pegged to bridge the gap between Mario/Gretzky and all the other superstars in our own galaxy. Ovechkin looks like a real good shot to take that #3 spot in his own universe if he keeps his head on straight.

Most exciting in 30 years. crosby - timbit hockey LMAO - is left in his NHL legacy dust

habsperspective's picture
Lets no get carried away...30 years is along time, including Gretzky who had just started his pro career 30 years ago!! Not to mention Lemieux, Jagr, Bure, Federov...and lots others, lets look at it again in 5 years. Jagr had** 1600 points in under 1300 games, and was a one man wrecking crew, Pavel was a scoring machine... no doubt hes great, but give it time... but give credit to others that have amazed us in the not so distant past

Kristopher7's picture
I agree lol, enjoy being a Reebok, Gatorade, NHL and Timbits posterboy Crysby, Go Go Ovechkin, The Beast! Alexander the Great!

Any news on when Tanguay will be back?

Mr. Stubbs... Just as sort of an aside, but totally relevant to this discussion, would it be possible for you to post here where all of the teams sit in relation to the salary cap? It would help a lot in making sensible trade speculations... "No culture has a monopoly on beauty or value....Just as no religion has a monopoly on truth." --Voltaire

Nahlsy's picture
I don't think that takes things like Lang's injury into account and I am pretty sure that Lang going on the IR means his salary isn't currently counted against our cap for the rest of the year. That's partly the reason I liked the idea of grabbing a Brad Richards and hoping he returned on the final week of the season or so with the assumption that his salary wouldn't count against us while he was on IR. I'm usually cautious before referring to hockeybuzz as the authority on much of anything but, at least something like salaries should be fairly easy to be factual about.

Clay4bc's picture
Actually, I think this does take Lang into account. We were pushing up against the cap before his injury, and that is what allowed us to acquire Schneider and his 5.625 million dollar salary. Now we are up against the cap again, and in order to make any significant moves we must move an equal amount of salary. A quote from the Hickey article on the Schneider deal: "The team cleared roster and cap space by sending Ryan O'Byrne to Hamilton and placing Robert Lang on injured reserve." Chuck's picture
$367,024. Not a lot of wiggle room.

Habs cannot make any serious acquisitions without giving up a couple of regulars. Our free (restricted and otherwise) agents make way too much for the contribution they've provided so far. Also, given that we have a high player count which carbo can't seem to manage a one for many trade may not be a bad thing.

Clay4bc's picture
Thanks for that! Much appreciated. "No culture has a monopoly on beauty or value....Just as no religion has a monopoly on truth." --Voltaire

I wouldn't trade any of these guys: - Markov - Komi (resign him pls) - Hamr sign in the summer: big/mean D-Man Price needs d-men that will take away the rebound or make you pay for standing in front of the net. Build from the net out and pick up a (real) top center. Where's our #1 Center?

What makes you so sure Price has or will make a first save? Based on what we have seen from him to date how can we conclude we build this team from the "net out" with Carey Price. What's his trade value?

doug's picture
Rangers got point by scoring with 39.1 seconds left in the game, but then thankfully lost in OT to the Leafs. Big lost point. We need every one we can get. Wish they hadn't scored in regulation: they should consider themselves lucky. Habs, Rangers, and Penguins all look crappy lately. Carolina only one that seems to be turning the corner. Just hope we can get 3 points somehow out of the next three games.

Komi has been our worst d-man since coming back from his injury. I don't want to trade him but he is not worth more than 4 mil per year. We need what we have needed for years, big centre and shut down d-man. It will take a lot to get either one, we're talking Higgins, Pleks, SK74, Halak, MacDonagh and picks. But please not the core of the future, i.e. Subban, Pacs, Fischer and the 2 Russian D-men. Go Habs Go !!

Bash's picture
Komi is playing hurt! 0 hits last game! The guy's a warrior and must be signed. "If all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail." anon

Yeah, but if we don't trade him, And we agree he's not worth more then 4 mill, (someone else will surely at least offer) we'll lose him like Souray, and Streit. Get something now!

habs12345's picture
komiserak will make about what adam foote or chris phillips makes but possibly less montreal will keep him just cuz hes struggling doesnt mean he will for his whole career i can just imagine we had vinny when he was drafted you people woulda chased him outta town he wasnt really a good player till after around 4-5 seasons in the nhl

I don't think he's struggling, I just don't think he's very good! He is what he is....nothing great, no All star...a stay at home Defenceman. But not worth the big contact to me.

habs12345's picture
exactly he is what he is a big strong stay home defenceman with a mean streak who will be top 5 in hits and blocked shots year after year....

If thats worth 6 million a year to you then great! But...Look at JBow, Chara, Pronger,...those are the hard hitting, mean streak'n Dmen We've been missing (who can also put up a point or two). Thats what 6 million should buy you. Not a Komi. 2 million yeah, I'll sign him now.

habs12345's picture
hes not gonna get 6 million hes gonna get around 3 million

Clay4bc's picture
Sign him for 2.5 - 3 mil, but beyond that, he can be easily replaced. And we need to be prepared to trade ANY and ALL UFA's now, hopefully for contract players, not more UFA's. Next season could be a nightmare for the habs if we lose what we have, and no big names sign here to replace them. "No culture has a monopoly on beauty or value....Just as no religion has a monopoly on truth." --Voltaire

Prediction: Komi gone for either part of a big deal, or for picks. No way would I...or I think, BG sign this guy for the 6 year 6 million he's gonna want. To me he's a big lug who in no way is in the same group as a JBow, or Pronger. He's a 6'5 bullion. Ok...he blocks a few shots, but he's not the all star everybody thinks he is. I'll keep him for 2 million a year tops. 10 points a year?? Trade this guy while his value is there. Package him with the K Bro's for Vinny!

HabsFanInVictoria's picture
Aren't we already struggling in the toughness department? Do we really need to give up our hardest hitter? Sometimes a guy like Komi, who gives his heart and soul to the team and never has a negative thing to say about his teammates or the organization, is worth more then the average 'big lug'. He's a heart and soul player that this organization needs for years to come. Sign him.

Don't get me wrong! I like Komi. He's an asset on any team! But in the cap era we have to be careful. I think by getting voted into the all star game, and the reputation Komi has as being a "heart and soul player" (not my opinion) around the league he has an inflated Market value now! One in which he would love to cash in on as the good American Capitalist he is! I just wouldn't fork over the Bucks he's gonna want. 2-3 million long term...I'm all for it! But his agent won't be.

are you nuts trade komisarek? for years we've need size on the backend and we have that now! if we lose him you'll be the first one on here crying because we are to small and to soft on the backend nobody to black shots, all the winning and successful teams have these kind of defenceman and they are very valuable! i say if we don't pay him 4-5 million some team will and that will be our downfall,it took us years to draft and develop a big physical stay at home defenceman he's our number 2 defencman and i hope we keep him for years!

Olay Olay Olay's picture
All things being equal, if I had to give up a dman to clear up some room, I'd go with Hammer. He's good, but grossly overpaid. I'd leave Komi where he is and give him a twin tower to work with.

habsperspective's picture
Twin Tower? Can you imagine how bad, he and Obyrne would be!!! Ugh, Price would retire! Get rid of anyone that gets us something, including Komisarek, and our latest loser Koivu... Hes our leader and has 3 goals, and is -9 since his injury return, and his brother is outperforming him, on a supposed lesser team? Oh what a leader!!! Give me a break, all this heart...oh yeah, does lots.

I'm with ya Baby! trade em Both!! Koivu's a good guy...but he ain't no Captain! at least not on the ice...actually, doesn't seem to be leading off it either. This is Kovalev's team!! Open your eyes everybody.

Clay4bc's picture
What everyone has to get a grip on is that we are right up against the cap now. Any trade(s) we make have to have an equal return in salary - period. However, given our plethora of UFA's at the moment and the unlikelyhood that we will attract any quality UFA's in the summer (see past history for rational on this one), we might do well to trade some of their salary now for players under contract. If we do not make some moves, we may be sorry next season when we attract no new talent, lose much of what we have, and have to ice the Bulldogs (who have some GREAT prospects, but who maybe are not ready for the show at this time). It would definitely be in our best interests to consider this, but I am sure Gainy is well aware of everything I said - I just hope he has the options available to do something that will benefit the team not just now, but for the future. "No culture has a monopoly on beauty or value....Just as no religion has a monopoly on truth." --Voltaire

Pretty sure Gainey said in a press conference that we can still add another player who makes between 5-6 million. Don't forget salaries get pro-rated (e.g: 1/4 of the season left, 1/4 of his salary against the cap)

itpf's picture
actually, after bg picked up schnieder he said habs couldn't afford another big contract player.

Clay4bc's picture
Agreed, that is exactly what he said. So my point stands - we will have to trade equal salary to make any trade. "No culture has a monopoly on beauty or value....Just as no religion has a monopoly on truth." --Voltaire

Two guys I would look into if I were Gainey, Jokinen and Smyth, can't afford both, but either one would be nice.

Dennis's picture
Nothing's changed since, well, forever, We still need an impact defenceman who can also hit the net, an impact forward (maybe two), a couple of brain transplants, steady and brilliant goaltending, less penalties, and no off-ice stuff. Other than these, we're set. http://dennis-kane.com/

HardHabits's picture
I'd like to see the team get another center to replace the hole left by Lang's loss. Rather that nobody get's traded though. I still like the current line-up warts and all. My issue is the coaching and the type of game the team plays after they get a lead. That and turnovers. If they played an offense style (without taking stupid caught with your pants down chances) and hemmed the opponent in their zone all or most of the game they wouldn't be so fragile after being down either. The defensive shell game is a breeding ground for frustration and lack of confidence. A big bad D like Pronger wouldn't hurt. ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: The best defense is a good offense!

dufour's picture
completely agree... they played perfect hockey against Ottawa until they went into the shell and then the turnovers and scoring chances started going to Ottawa. If they kept playin the way ther were it wouldn't have become even remotely close of a game.

wd40's picture
TB just beat Boston.

The Cat's picture
Wow Tampa has just surpassed the habs in my 5on5 standings with this win - meaning if special teams and OT didnt count- TB now has more wins than the habs.

shuttle-lemaire-lafleur's picture
Love it...

Habs goaltending prospect 19 year old Robert Mayer stopped 43 of 45 shots for 5 - 2 win as the Saint John Sea Dogs defeated the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles, a top ranked CHL team in a QMJHL game today. He looked sharp all game and was solid as the Dogs killed off successfully two 5 on 3 penalty situations in the 2nd period. Signed as a free agent last fall, perhaps another Jaroslav Halak in the offing?

I think management is committed to Price as the eventual #1. Halak has a lot of value now and deserves to be a starter. I don't know which other teams may be looking for goaltending now, but I think he is one of our best recent performers and might actually get us some return value. -- GK

smiler2729's picture
Yeah, no matter how good Halak is, he's got no future in Montreal. A veteran goaltending presence (not Marc Denis, and no Cristobal huet wasn't really one either being a year or so removed from usurping Theodore) is just what the hockey doctor ordered, does anyone remember the year Ken Dryden sat out in a contract dispute? It was 1973-74 and the Habs went with Michel Larocque, Michel Plasse and Wayne Thomas in nets and ultimately watched Philly take away their Cup. The next season Dryden returns and voila! The Habs run off 4 in a row! Or something similar... Coincidence? Or voodoo? Hmmm. Perhaps picking up Manny Legace from the waiver wire?

HabsFanInVictoria's picture
If you look back over the last 10 years , the habs had Andy Moog and Hackett to help along their young goalies who everyone thought was going to be the next best thing. They use to wear 41 and 61... ;) Bring back a vet to help along Mr. 31? Maybe another troubling thought... Hacket challenged Thibeault and started a fair bit, so did Moog. Huet challenged Theo and ended up taking his spot. We are so sold on Price that I think we sometimes overlook how good Halak can be and what he's done over the last 2 years.

The Cat's picture
I dont know, goalies arent at a premium it seems.

Bulldogs Fan's picture
I'd hate to see Halak go, but you make a good point, and Denis is a good goalie for backup with plenty of NHL experience. Perhaps if Halak was packaged for Lecavalier, otherwise I wouldn't trade him. And... I'm still not sure Price will rebound and become the best goalie in the world.

Bulldogs Fan's picture
Remember Komi was playing with Markov and now has a new partner, that takes a bit of adjusting to, I'd guess.

wd40's picture
After going through a dismal patch, Markov, Hammer, and Gorges are playing better,or at least it looks that way to me. Breezer gives you what he can, but Komi just seems off. what do you guys think?

lavie's picture
He has been calculating bucks (with his agent) for next season.

saskhab's picture
Give Komi 2 games off!

Xtrahabsfan's picture
Trade the Hab players that were struggling who are now hot and GET Vincent Lecavalier!

zozotheclown's picture
With the recent addition of Schneider i don't think we need another D, someone i think we could go for is Jokkinen, depending on the price. I used to be for trading plecks for him but at this point i wouldn't, he's too hot right now. The only reason i would go for him is because i think he might be interested in resigning here because koivu is a finn as well.

shuttle-lemaire-lafleur's picture
Pleks a czech not a Finn.

likehoy's picture
he was alluding to jokinen. - does carbo bargain for the right Price before games?

shuttle-lemaire-lafleur's picture
My mistake ...whoops!

Vid's picture
you gotta trade quality players to get quality players...really a hot plekanec is not as valuable as a regular Jokinen. It's best to trade when a player is hot, value is increased.

t1tan5's picture
Plek is definitely not a #1 caliber center in the NHL. He's at best a #2.

smiler2729's picture
He's a number 3 on a hot streak... all hot streaks go cold. Trade 'im while he's "hot"!

do you know anything about hockey at all? you keep saying to trade plekanec! right now he's the #1 center on this team and if you trade plekanec and koivu leaves or gets hurt who takes that spot lapierre, chipchurra? thanks, but no thanks, those guys are 3rd and 4th line centers for a reason! i think you go off at the mouth before the brain engages and that makes you look dumb, please think before you speak smiler.

Here is what the Habs should do: Get Jokinen from Pheonix, he would be a great pickup. Carbo better start Halak in net for the next couple of games. Get Chris Neil, and get rid of George Laroque.

Bulldogs Fan's picture
Stewart is just as good as Larocque, if not better. Not the fighter reputation obviously, but tough enough and can play some.

Vid's picture
Chris Neil is injured...lacerated calf

brad.men5's picture
Laraque isn't going anywhere. ___________________________________________ Check out my blog! http://canadienscentral.blogspot.com/

The Syaracuse Crunch beat The Dawgs 3 to 1 as Marc Denis stopped 29 of 32 shots for the loss. Kinssewich scored for Hamilton and Andrew Conboy picked up his 1st AHL point and Sergei has no points on 9 shots and is minus -1 after three games.

Bulldogs Fan's picture
I was at the game. SK showed some life on the power play, but seemed uninterested to me. Goalie LaCosta played really well for the Crunch in the first period and was first star. Dogs ran out of gas and had only 4 shots in the third period of their third game in 3 days.

HardHabits's picture
The avatars are too small to convey the imagery. The Wizard of Habs has Gainey as the Lion. Kovalev as the Tin Man. Carbonneau as the Scarecrow. Sergei K is Dorothy and Koivu is Toto. Before you go crazy, as we all know the story ends with Gainey getting tough, Kovalev playing like he means it, Carbonneau coaching well, Sergei K back home (on the team) and Koivu exposing the man behind the mask (meaning he finds a hot goaltender's weakness come playoffs). If I Only Had the Heart When a man's an empty kettle he should be on his mettle, And yet I'm torn apart. Just because I'm presumin' that I could be super-human, If I only had the heart. On the goaltender - wont be gentle and my shots will be so mental I'll tear his glove apart. I'd just swoop in like a sparrow and shoot the puck quick like an arrow If I only had the heart. Picture me - on the bench seat. Above a voice sings low. you're on a roll, go score a goal? I hear a beat.... How sweet. Just to register emotion, intensity - devotion, And really feel the part. I could play young and not sleepy win the Cup and then MVP, If I only had the heart ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: The best defense is a good offense!

The Cat's picture
IMO its essential to get a number 1 center of a certain age at this deadline for 2 reasons: number one we need the help, number 2 Koivu and Kovalev are getting old, and the younguns we have are just too young to carry the torch just yet. So we need Jokinen or Lecavalier for continuity.

Rooster's picture
I'd love to see BG make a move for Jokinen. It would probably take an almost ready solid prospect (Maxwell?), and some roster players. May even take less...Phoenix got a great deal for him, so they won't have that "we need to get someone to overpay, or he stays" mentality. ~Listen to the rooster! He knows what he's saying! www.myspace.com/singledigitiq My band, always looking to play show in/around montreal.

dufour's picture
If he can snag Jokinen for Pleks and Maxwell I'd say do it. Jokinen is gritty and talnted. Maxwell looked very weak during his time with the big club, but once he fills out a little he will most likely be a solid 2nd liner.

46_14_27's picture
There are only a few big, strong centremen available. BG hopefully will not sell the farm for a UFA just to try to have a good run at the playoffs. If he can't get a guy like VL on a long term deal, I hope he stands pat. Look at what happened last year with Streit. BG didn't offer him a contract because of the hpe of getting Sundin. THe Habs lost big on that one. BG dealt for Schneider lately to make up for that one. That non-move in the summer has cost the Habs an enormous # of points this year. More of that kind of dealing the Habs do not need. Deal for a good player you're sure you can get and keep Bob. And don't let the talent you have now leave with no compensation. I'm one fan who can wait another year. 46-14-27 Best Line In Hockey !! The Cup in 3 years or less !! Young Guys Have Got To Step UP !!!!!

The trade DL is over hyped by the media..TSN, SNET, ESPN, etc. There may be 1-2 deals of any significance and the rest are bottom of the barrel.. I have been one of the many that sat and watched countless hours of insignificant deals such as Mike Sillinger for a 4th rounder in past years, but I am not holding my breath this season.. With the state of the salary cap and more importance on younger/cheaper talent, DL day just doesn't deliver like it used to.. I can, however, see Gainey making a deal or two to pick up a few future assets in trading a few of our UFAs, though... Dandenault and Begin may grab a mid to late round pick to counter the lost picks used in acquiring Schneider.. Maybe a little depth on the BL or down the middle.. What I am trying to say is, don't hold your breath for the "Big One" in MTL..Gainey likes having assets and isn't about to trade off the farm unless a "no brainer" comes along.. _____________________________________________________ "We don't hang Division Conference Champions banners in this city, we hang Stanley Cup Champion banners!" - Carey Price, Goalie the Montreal Canadiens
