Ailing Price uncertain for tonight

Pat Hickey checks in from Long Island to report that there's doubt whether goaltender Carey Price will play tonight as scheduled against the New York Islanders.

Price didn't take part in the morning skate, remaining at the team's hotel with what appears to be the flu.

Watch for the Canadiens to recall Marc Denis from Hamilton later in the day as a backup to probable starter Jaroslav Halak, who hasn't played since suffering a 5-2 loss against Toronto on March 21.

i don't see what the big deal is. we have halak and he's more than able to get the job done. price out drinking etc would be more of a worry especially at this point in the season. no time to party from now until the end of the playoffs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A. Berke's picture
you're completely out of line by saying that about Price. Who the heck are you to know that for sure? If you're an Halak cheerleader, that's fine and alright, but making such asinine claims about Price or any other player is WRONG. If you think that you were being funny, you were not. Sorry bud, a true fan doesn't make unfounded and unwarranted claims like that, so don't tell me that you're a Habs fan and posting in the benefit of the team. This ain't. PS: civilized criticism is always OK, but gossipy lies aren't. Ali B.

shuttle-lemaire-lafleur's picture
Comments that attribute Carey Price has some kind of drinking problem is total bullshyte and I hope the people who keep posting that crap stop it. I view comments like those AS borderline racist because Price is a native Canadian. It is uncalled for and really pisses me off.

Why is everyone speculating he's gone out drinking?!?! There is a flu bug going through the locker room. Quit starting rumors!

Price out drinking blah blah blah.....time to move on to something else. Once a Habs fan, always a Habs fan

If it weren't for bad luck, this year's team wouldn't have any luck at all.

Fansincebirth's picture
We avoided through the injury bug last year and went splat in the playoffs. Bitten hard this year so....maybe....ya know what I mean? Once a Habs fan, always a Habs fan

Great! Just great! Price gets his grove back and now he will be out for who knows how long! Great! Just great!

ENDING THIS STRING OF THE FLUBUG IT'S TOO SIMPLE I just shake my head in bewilderment why the team isn't onto the simplest method to knockout the flu. It's been six for six working for me this season. The solution: drink about a half teaspoon of baking soda in a tall glass of water when you feel the flu coming on. The science of this is that it alters your system pH to being slightly more base (less acidic). It works every time. Viruses cannot survive the reduction in acidicity and die. Sports teams are usually out front on cutting edge solutions, like race car teams are regarding automobile improvements. Hopefully, the Habs will pick up on this one and end the endless string of sicknesses before long. The playoffs are riding on the health of the team right now. Can you imagine the flu ruining the 100th season?! (Note: Obviously, not for those with limits on sodium intake.)

Spicy soup works too. Or eat lots of garlic. I never get sick because of this. (Except for my migraines, obviously). Assignment to all Habs for the summer: work on your immune system!

A. Berke's picture
a couple of Alka Seltzer tablets will do the same as well. Too bad that Price is taken ill, hopefully Halak will be up to the task tonight. Wish a good game to all Habs. Ali B.

likehoy's picture
interesting...theoretically it sounds like it could work! i'm gooing to give it a shot! wish me luck - IT'S BUSINESS TIME!

You are welcome to try it, but please don't let other NHL teams' players in on this. :)

A comment on the Price vs Halak thing. When Price was playing poorly and Halak was playing great, this forum exploded when Price was put back in nets. In fact, some went as far as to suggest (demand) that Halak play even when it was reported that HE had the flu. Now that Price is back on his game, or so it seems, people are reluctant to put Halak back in nets because he probably doesn't give a crap and is probably just sitting on the bench sulking anyways. These aren't spoiled children we are talking about and I'm certain that Jaro is going to go in nets tonight and be stellar until he's removed on Saturday or Monday or whenever he's put back in. How about all those back up's out there who never (or rarely) get a chance to play? Do they bench Manning just so the backup QB can have a go at it? Even when he's playing like crap they don't pull him. Price was promoted to the #1 position and for the most part, he has looked pretty damned good in nets. He has had the occasional melt down etc but he has pretty much lived up to expectations and will be a great goalie in time. Halak is great as well and when he's called on, he's going to play great. Build a bridge and get over it.... Once a Habs fan, always a Habs fan

I think "having the flu" is hockey terminology for being too hungover to practice or play well. When I was in university, I also showed 'flu-like' symptoms from time to time... strangely enough, those flu-like symptoms coincided with waking up after a night of drinking...

Last saturday I had a pretty bad case of flu. I feel like another one is coming up this saturday as well.

likehoy's picture
i had a feeling that 75% of flu-like symptoms had to do with drinking the night before... but then people do legitimately get sick too on the side. - SAKU KOIVU'S HAND OF GOD.

On top of that, Higgins was complaining of the flu last game, so chances are good that a) The bug is going around and b) Price got it from grabbing Higgins' pint accidentaly in a drunken stupor at the bar that night. ZING

Got2BHabs's picture
Let's not forget that Kovy and AK46 had it recently too. I highly doubt that these boys are drinking themselves stupid when the season is on the line.

Nahlsy's picture
Then there were also Tanguay and Halak (where it started) for that matter. I said it then, I'll say it again... dangit, they should have kept Halak as far from the team as possible for that week. He wasn't going to play anyway and all it did was make sure the flu went through the entire room. Ah well, at least it's been one at a time and not all at once right?

Habs need to block all the shots. I doubt Halak really cares much how he plays, cause no matter what he does he will always be #2 in Mtl. He hasn't played a lot and probably needs a game or two to get going. Islanders and the Laffs will try their best to konw Habs out. So... I hope all our players are prepared (I dream) to block shot after shot tonight.

jlot64's picture
From what i understand the flu shot is a strain of las years flu virus so you cant catch the one from last season. However their is a new strand every winter that the shot cant cure i believe. Don't quote me on this it's just from what i remember from grade 11 biology.

LesFleurs's picture
I believe they try to predict which strain will be most prevalent based on other areas that have a flu season before us. I could be wrong.

If I were Jaro I'd have no motivation. No matter how freaking amazing he plays, Carey's getting the start once he's healthy. Ex nihilo nihil fit

Got2BHabs's picture
Exactly, was just going to say the same thing. Competitors compete every chance they get. I'm sure Jaro is going to go in there and play with everything he has. I just hope it's enough after riding the pine for so long.

Exit716's picture
The Habs just have to play with intensity and out work the Islanders. Their talent level should prevail then.

WindsorHab-10's picture
Don't like this.

Clay4bc's picture
The hockey gods are giving Halak his shot. He better make the most of it, because this is a crucial time. I have faith in you, Jaro - so show all of us Habs fans what you've got. And just in case...get well soon, Carey! Personally, I don't care who plays at this time - I just care that we win. __________________ Just as no culture has a monopoly on beauty or value, no religion has a monopoly on truth - Voltaire

Price seems to get "the flu" a lot. Any word on what's up with S Kost and Hamr. I know they're not travelling but what is it - concussion? Shoulder? ~ Listen to the smart dog - he knows his poop!

Now is the time for Halak to do what is expected of him again. He came up with outstanding efforts before so I am sure he can do it tonight.

You have the best avatar I have seen...ohhh to be those hands. But back to hockey, I hope Halak can do what he always does, come in cold and play well.

I say get everyone who has the flu away from the team till the Boston game and cough all over the Bruins.

These guys should stop frequenting escorts so much. Unbelievable how all you hear from a bunch of professional athletes that they got a flu. My 70 year old mother does not have flu as often as these "tough" guys.

habs63's picture
Forsure, or at least that mob guy hooking up the team should screen these girls for the flu. But on a serious note, the strain on the body from the season would prob leave anyones body weak from fighting off the flu. - blah blah blah Wow, My signature is terrible.

Sure, but only if you could say that they've tried hard for the past 76 games. In my mind they barely put effort worth mentioning for maybe 10 games tops this year, so not really much of a strain.

Not unique to the Habs but the timing really suck. Make sure we spread it to the Devils/Broons/Caps by the end of next week. Get Typhoid Sally to set up a kissing booth outside their arena's. Once a Habs fan, always a Habs fan

It's not just the fact that Price might have the flu that worries me, I'm concerned that a flu bug could go through the entire team at the worst possible time of the year. I'm a big Halak supporter but we have to keep in mind that he sometimes needs a start or two to get back in the groove and find his game. Luckily, we are playing the Islanders tonight and not a high end team. Going For The Brass Ring - 25 Cups In 100 Years

Ronan G's picture
Don't kid yourself.. we're gonna face a tough young Islanders squad. A team who has beat Detroit, put up a good game against the caps and destroyed us last game. This is gonna be a tough game to win if we don't play like we should.

mrhabby's picture
your back ???

These guys drive me insane! Get freaking flu shots for the team. Give them one for every strain. For crying out loud, I have never seen a group of grown up men so freaking fragile. What a waste!

if I understand correctly the flu shot does not prevent the common flu but a more serious type of flu just what I hear from family members who are in the medical industry, I could be wrong though.
