Janik recalled; Markov and/or Schneider out?

posted by Dave Stubbs at 9h46 EST on Apr 6

The Canadiens have just recalled defenceman Doug Janik from the Hamilton Bulldogs, which suggests that either Andrei Markov or Mathieu Schneider or both might not be available for tonight's home game vs. Ottawa. Both Markov and Schneider left Saturday's game against Toronto before the end of the contest.

Goalie Marc Denis has been sent back to Hamilton, indicating that Carey Price, sidelined the past two games with the flu, is ready to return to action, either in a starting or backup capacity.

More details to come.

I really hope that this is just being done as an "in-case" sort of thing and both D's go in and at least try and play. We need them now more than ever. - http://www.habsforums.com

Well ,I think there's more incite about the disagreement Between Carbo and Gainey ,Gainey who want's to play the veteran players he signed up on a constant basis and the former coach Carbo doing the line shuffle on Ritalin I'll only play grinders move .I do think that Carbo's style did help the younger guy's in the fact they all got to play with Kovy,Koivu etc...

I was looking at the Bulldogs stats and they are not that bad. Marc Denis is doing quite a job there. Good Save perventage ad GAA. Also Ryan O'Byrne wasn't doing too bad before he got called up. Now what I am worried about is the lack of ice time for O'Byrne. How ready will he be. I just hope that him and Janik kick it off well. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Koivu for Prime Minister...

Schneider and Markov didn't practice but still might play! And now, a 25th banner will hang on the rafters of the Bell Center in Montreal. The Canadiens win the Stanley cup!

Corporate's picture
I don't think so... They called Janik when they have O'Byrne ready to go and Breezer/Dandy. Something is up and e need this win tonight and then the magic number is .5 ------------------------------------------------------------------- Koivu for Prime Minister...

stanley25's picture
Gainey's call to play Janik and O'Byrne together is rather interesting, wouldn't you say?

They may have been paired together in Hamilton at one time. The money game is tomorrow so back to back games on hurt defenseman must be the tonic in Gainys mind. It also gives them a little more experince in playoff atmosphere, we are one injury away from big trouble if markov or schinder get hurt for 2 week peroid.

mrhabby's picture
i don't really understand it. i was hoping for Dandy to move back to defense and take some pressure off and no andre k.

Hmm, I would've thought that Dandenault would move back on D and O'Byrne would stay in the box (and A Kostitsyn would be reinserted into the lineup). Oh well, I'm sure these combinations are liable to change before game-time. (heh, I noticed you put Lapierre's line as 2nd :)

FeverBoy's picture
Of course, just when things were turning around for us. Makes you wonder what our PP will look like tonight and what type of magic tricks Gainey still has up his sleeves.

GP HABS FAN's picture
Can you image the first PP unit on D...Breezer and Gorges, oh my...

Corporate's picture
To be truly honest. Breezer at least hits the net when he shoots and can give really nice passes (and no not to the other team). Gorges last game and a few times this year has played point on the powerplay and has fared well. He hasn't scored a lot but his shot is on net. With Tanguay-Koivu-Kovalev, all you have to do is get it close to the net and they will take care of the rest. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Koivu for Prime Minister...

cautiousoptimist's picture
You gotta think Gainey would play O'Byrne before Janik -- otherwise OB would be in Hamilton by now. Makes you wonder if we really do have two injuries to deal with. And even then, we've got Komi, Gorges, Hamrlik, Brisebois, Dandy, O'Byrne and Janik -- 7 defencemen. Weird. 1. www.flickeringpictures.com - not a hockey site, but still kinda neat 2. Josh Gorges on Montreal's attack: "They're comin', they're comin' and they keep comin'. Just line after line, wave after wave..."

Rugger's picture
I'm sure it is just precaution, with back to back games, it would be better to have him here for practice today and tomorrow in case he is needed either day.

FeverBoy's picture
Man, i really hope your right rugger. Habs cant afford to be limping into the playoffs or patched together with scraps from Dallas. Is it a coincidence that both our PP blue line trigger men got injured in the leafs game?

Iceberg84's picture
If they're both day-to-day, I'd rather they get some rest tonight instead of risking further damage. The last thing we want is some walking wounded defencemen playing at 50% now and in the playoffs. I don't mind having weaker defense against Ottawa as long as our offense is strong, which it has been lately.

stanley25's picture
I hope we'll see O'Byrne in the line up before Janik. And for the guys who attends de Bulldogs games, I would like to know why Shawne Belle wasn't given a chance instead af Janik? And now, a 25th banner will hang on the rafters of the Bell Center in Montreal. The Canadiens win the Stanley cup!

saskhab's picture
I don't attend the games, but Janik has played 159 NHL games already so this is old hat for him. Belle has only had one very unforgettable stint in the NHL. You go with the guy that gives you the best chance at winning at this point, rather than try and "see what the guy's got". Janik is the more proven player. Plus, he was acquired for Steve Begin specifically for this purpose.

stanley25's picture
Good point! And I think Belle is injured. The kid is RFA so he might get another chance next year. And now, a 25th banner will hang on the rafters of the Bell Center in Montreal. The Canadiens win the Stanley cup!

How did Schneider get hurt? I never saw it, saw the Markov hit but missed Schneiderman, Schneiderman, does whatever a Schneider can.

mrhabby's picture
Scheinderman was hit by Brad Mayday. It was a clean hit but a hard one.shoulder injury.

I hope it's not a shoulder. Shoulder injuries take weeks (Tanguay and Latendresse).

mrhabby's picture
iam just guessing its shoulder, i have idea so i don't want to start any rumours.

Fansincebirth's picture
The way May hit him I would have guessed sore ribs but shoulder, ribs, it's all 'upper body' and he's out :o( Once a Habs fan, always a Habs fan

Nahlsy's picture
Brad May got him (is anyone surprised by that?)

Here's what TSN is saying, although this callup is alarming: Montreal Player Date Status Description Robert Lang 2009-02-02 on injured reserve and is out indefinitely left Achilles surgery Francis Bouillon 2009-02-20 on injured reserve and is out indefinitely torn groin Andrei Markov 2009-04-06 probable for Monday's game against Ottawa head Mathieu Schneider 2009-04-06 probable for Monday's game against Ottawa upper body Sergei Kostitsyn 2009-04-06 doubtful for Monday's game against Ottawa upper body Carey Price 2009-04-06 questionable for Monday's game against Ottawa flu-like symptoms So, does Gainey put A. Kostitsyn in after a 6-2 win?

Morenz7's picture
Yes. Kostitsyn in, move Dandy back to D and sit O'Byrne and/or Janik, depending on the availability of Markie and/or Schneider.

Blouin's picture
He could be a conditional callup if they are both gametime decisions. Markov didn't look as hurt as Schneids though if it had to be one of them.

sYstem21's picture
Blerg.... Well at least on the bright side we only need 3 points from here to the end of the season to clinch a playoff spot... ------------------------ Vive La Sainte-Flanelle!

Corporate's picture
From what I saw on Saturday, he player that looked more banged up was Schneider. To be honest we need Markov more than Schneider. I would put Dandy o defense and put Stewart back on second line with Pleky. He is the same type of player as Dandy. Speedy and not bad defensively. Now, I have a feeling that our Goalie will have to make some great saves tonight. Ottawa ha only on awesome line but they can hurt you and they haven't played that bad since the change of the coach. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Koivu for Prime Minister...

J.T.'s picture
Janik's been playing some decent D in Hamilton, in a stay-at-home role. He's a plus ten in seventeen games. On a side note, I find it interesting that the only minus player on the 'Dogs roster is Steven Gainey. http://habsloyalist.blogspot.com

stanley25's picture
Sorry to contedict you but Janik is only +4 with 10 penality minutes... And now, a 25th banner will hang on the rafters of the Bell Center in Montreal. The Canadiens win the Stanley cup!

Nahlsy's picture
He has to justify the Begin trade somehow right?

mrhabby's picture
justify..a bit of sarcasm there???

Isn't this just GREAT..........

CHsam's picture
I'm in favour of someone messing up Grabovski big time before he tries to really hurt our important players again

Habsrule1's picture
Hopefully, they are not out for long, but this may be good for the team. A little bit of adversity might prove that this is the team we're starting to think it is. Guy Carbonneau's bunch may have folded and gotten obliterated without these guys, but Gainey's group can win without them for a couple games. Go Habs Go!! "I can't hear what Jeremy (Roenick) is saying because my Stanley Cup rings are in my ears" - Patrick Roy

arcosenate's picture
mmmmmmm....adversilicious. we've had enough of that for a few years. let's catch some breaks, get on roll, hit a high note, play to our potential, make a move, etc, but please, no more adversity!

J.T.'s picture
Oh, Lord, I think they've done the adversity thing already this year. I really don't want anymore adversity. http://habsloyalist.blogspot.com

FeverBoy's picture
seriously, enough is enough guys. I know they want the Habs centennial road to the cup DVD to be epic in nature, but when it starts to resemble a plot line from "These are the days of our lives" its time to give the fans a break lol

longtimehabsfan's picture
Just more adversity in a year that has brought nothing but adversity.

Corporate's picture
Good point... ------------------------------------------------------------------- Koivu for Prime Minister...

But....isn't Gorges our new pp shot from the right point? Why fret? (I'm trying to be strong)

Fansincebirth's picture
Thinking back to Saturday's game, of the two players, I'd say it's going to be Schneider who would be out tonight. Sens have some speed to them and at least one of our Dmen (Breezer) doesn't so sit him tonight.... Once a Habs fan, always a Habs fan

Ben's picture
I'd rather have it be Schneider than Markov... Any word on the Cube? At least we have Dandy to put back there.

mrhabby's picture
heard cube is 1-2 weeks away last week after tweaking his groin in practice.not really sure its accurate.

Ferguson-22's picture
Any word on when 'Cube is returning? He would help. And I'd play Dandy on D before Brisebois...

coachdoug's picture
Makes me hate the Laffs even more!...one word for tonight...backchecking!!!...(I know it's two words put together)... I hope this a safety measure for the playoffs... Go Habs Go! "Proud home of the now four...sacred cows...Breezer...you may be next"

PrimeTime's picture
Just freakin great! Our team weakness just got weaker. Hammer, Komi, Gorges, Bris (dare I say) will need to step up.

I hope it's just a security measure and that both Markov and §chneider will play. We can't win without Markov, and with neither of them we have no powerplay to speak of. It was the Leafs' goal to put us out of the playoffs; if Markov misses several games, they may well have succeeded.

Nothing like a Monday morning punch in the gut and not knowing why you got hit.
