Schneider on the ice

posted by Pat Hickey at 10h32 EST on Apr 9

Eighteen hours after Bob Gainey said there was no way Mathieu Schneider could play in either of the Canadiens' last two regular-season games, the veteran defenceman has joined his teammates for the morning skate at the TD Banknorth Garden. We'll have an update on his status for tonight's game against the Bruins.

Here we are hoping in one hand and wishing in the other. If Gainey had pulled Price after his first shakey period against the NYR, they may have already secured that spot they'll be fighting for tonite. It's the same MO every game with Price. If he's shakey to start, he'll have a terrible game. Are fans the only ones who see this? I would hope Gainey goes with Halak tonite and if need be ride him into the playoffs. 2007 was a very hard pill to swallow, don't want to see that s**t again. As for Weber, let him loose. It would be almost impossible for him to be as bad as some of the D last game. I bet Komo would be going to Ham and not Janic if it wasn't for that little waiver problem. Alas, we are where we are and we have what we have. A beat up Schneider is better than no Schneider at all. You never know, him and Weber may have the same chemistry as him and Markov - if even for tonite. You can't win if you don't play. ========================================================================== Should have kept Streit !!!! Go Habs Go

Funny post coming from someone whose favorite players are SK74 and Plekanec....! Neither Price nor Komisarek have been anywhere as bad as either of them lol Go Habs Go!! "I can't hear what Jeremy (Roenick) is saying because my Stanley Cup rings are in my ears" - Patrick Roy

Olay Olay Olay's picture
I agree that Pleks and SK47 are useless but not as important as our D. And Komisarek is just plain brutal, Consistent no hit games, turn over after turn over, or panic iceings, that being said the only D men we have who earn their money is Georges, and Markov. I'm also a little worried with Schneider coming back. He's showing a ton of hart and obviously wants to win but rotator cuffs will not heal on their own...ever, I think he should go for the surgery. and come back next year stronger than before. After all you can't shoot with a torn rotator cuff.

Qais's picture
so you're players are Price and Komi and you think they did better than those two? 14

Bill J's picture
Price is part of the reason we are STILL in the playoff run (remember those 7 wins BEFORE the Markov & Schneider injury?) Sheesh people in here have short-term memory loss I think. & I guarantee that HAD Halak played in any of those 7 games, and lost ? these same fans would be asking for Gainey's head on a platter for not making Price play. "The Price is RIGHT for the Drive for 25!"

46_14_27's picture
I wasn't talking about the forwards. Stay on point. ========================================================================== Should have kept Streit !!!! Go Habs Go

Price is our #1 in the minds of big wigs upstairs. They going on the principals of we will sink or swim with him. You put the man (boy) in net tonight because he's the one they see during playoff's...if we get there which we will.

Qais's picture
I still dont agree how did Price get #1, for the previous games, Halak has proven that he should be between the pipes and you're still talkin about Price. 14

Bill J's picture
Proven ? show stats ?? what HAS been proven is that Price is based on stats alone - better then Halak - END OF STORY... People need to get the Halak Blinders off - cuz Halak has not won anything more then 1 game SINCE the 4 game stretch he had that seems to have made so many of you believers in the all-mighty Halak Price has the experience - Halak does NOT. Price has won in the playoffs - Halak has NOT. Price has won the big show (twice 2 years ago, World Juniors & Calder Cup) - Halak has NOT. Tell me what Halak has done (other then those 4 straight wins, which BTW up till the injuries of Markov & Schneider Price had surpased that winning streak - so I ask again.... How is Halak "better" then Price ? cuz when "I" watch the game I see alot more spectacular saves from Price, and a very good #2 in Halak. "The Price is RIGHT for the Drive for 25!"

46_14_27's picture
It's called DENIAL. There is a clinical explanation but you get the picture. ========================================================================== Should have kept Streit !!!! Go Habs Go

It's a miracle!

Exactly! I said we'd need one! Hmm... can I ask for two? ----- Their defenses are broken! Let the slaughter begin!

You know I have seen how every thinks our D is shaky. I assume Gainey sees the same thing. Why isn't Dandy on D? 3 time Stanley Cup Defenseman playing on 4th line. I agree the fourth line is playing well.. But come on. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Koivu for Prime Minister...

JB_15's picture
This is a big mistake One hit from lucic or chara and he is down for the count. And without being able to take a shot, what good is he anyway? He is risking his health for potentially the rest of his life for a game like this? Wow, he must really love the team. Good for him. Thats admirable for sure. But I think he is liable to do more harm than good, both to himself and to the team - particularly if he plays scared.

Nahlsy's picture
Sounds like Boston may be resting some guys as well. Really how bright would it be for them to take out Schneider though? The possibility that someone retaliates and takes out Savard for example would make that just not worth the effort for them. In all seriousness, Boston wants no part of Montreal in the first round no matter how banged up they are (history doesn't lie). There are much better options for the Bruins to begin the playoffs with and it wouldn't be overly surprising to see them go through the motions tonight to try to make sure they avoid the possibility.

mastodon's picture
Who is Boston sitting out?

JB_15's picture
Hope you guys below are right - but i dont understand - If he cant shoot, why is he getting PP time? Is he that good of a playmaker?

Corporate's picture
It is only a rotator cuff injury. Hell the guy behind the bench played the Stanley cup playoffs with 2 dislocated shoulders and still has all his limbs. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Koivu for Prime Minister...

JB_15's picture
When Gainey played injured he was what, between 23-25? In the late 70s? Schneider is nearly 40!

Corporate's picture
very true... But no matter what age it is. He got a second opinion and he isn't as injured as they say he is. Now.. Will it hurt... Yes.... Will he have the same strength in his shot? No... That is why Weber is there. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Koivu for Prime Minister...

HugeHabsFan's picture
Sounds like he'll only be on the PP, so hopefully that'll keep him safe JB. ........... "To you from failing hands we throw the torch. Be yours to hold it high." I STILL BELIEVE. I WILL ALWAYS BELIEVE.

Tom S.'s picture
Hi Denise!

HugeHabsFan's picture
Hey Tom!! Hope you see this! Are you going to the Spits game tonight?? They're driving me NUTS!! Tonight shoulda been the wrap 'er up to the series!! ........... "To you from failing hands we throw the torch. Be yours to hold it high." I STILL BELIEVE. I WILL ALWAYS BELIEVE.

Gary320's picture
He will probably get a limited ice time.. play on the PP.. I wouldnt worry too much about those two guys hitting alot tonight... they wouldnt wanna injure themselves going into the post season.

I'm hearing Marinaro - not sure if he's serious or not - reporting that Weber will play forward tonight with Dandy back on D. The thinking apparently is that Weber will not be able to handle the Bruin's size up front.

Gary320's picture
I think its a smart decision. Weber will play D during PPs. Id rather have Dandy get the responsiblities of being a D on ES, instead of Weber who has only played 1 NHL game.

Corporate's picture
I live the enthusiasm found on this board due to this news and it is a nice change from the negativeity from the past few games. As much as I agree that Schneider is a waarior and he is taking one for the team, is as much as the rest of the team (especially the second line) has to pay teh price tonight. This is like a seventh game. We have to play ur hearts ands guarentee our presence in the playoffs. You know with everything that has happened this year. Getting in the playoffs is a real nice goal to reach. Once the series starts anything can happen. So there is still hope for a cup. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Koivu for Prime Minister...

Fansincebirth's picture
How timely.... I'm reading The Montreal Canadiens (Jenish) On Cecil Hart leaving: "If only he had to keep his players happy, he could have stayed for years. But the fans had to be kept content, and those who followed the Canadiens could be as harsh and fickle as winter weather" Once a Habs fan, always a Habs fan Halté-là! Les Canadiens sont là!!

If Schneider plays Weber should still play. Breeze and/or OB or both should sit. Breeze got his 1000 games and a silver stick. Get over it Bob, enough with him.

Gary320's picture
OB is out. ITs going to be Weber and Schneider. As much as Im not a Brisebois fan, ID rather have O Byrne sit..

Corporate's picture
Brezzer as a seventh defenseman has done his job and even more. I respect the guy for coming back to Montreal after he was booed away. I agree O'Byrne should sit. Not because he can't play. But because he has played 2 games in a month. Who can get their groove back with soo little playing time. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Koivu for Prime Minister...

Gary320's picture
Not only that, I feel O'Byrne panics TOO easily when he is pressured. Brisebois has the experience, and although Bruins are talented, they arent the fastest team.. so speed isnt a problem. Brisebois over OBie for sure.

Corporate's picture
Yes but that comes with Timing. He hasn't gotten back yet and probably won't get it this year. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Koivu for Prime Minister...

Was color sweater was Schneider wearing??? Non contact?

Schneider will play. His family is only 1 hour south of Boston. This is great news for Habs. Broons going down. They are all excited about Winter Classic game at Fenway Park. Jack Edwards on NESN will have the call in English- The Canadiens in their 100th year will join the Bruins in postseason. Jack will have to take it down a notch from the last time they played in Montreal. "The Bruins have won the season series !!! " *** Irvin never got that excited after a regular season win. GO Habs GO....

PrimeTime's picture
That's Boston's cup! Wonder if they'll hand a banner "08/09 Season Series Winners over Habs".

Someone please ...a simple yes or no...are Bouillon and Sergei on the ice? Are they in Boston? Someone has to know.

They aren't! And now, a 25th banner will hang on the rafters of the Bell Center in Montreal. The Canadiens win the Stanley cup!

Fansincebirth's picture
Funny how some people immediately start denouncing Weber even before he hits the ice, if he does. After watching the last two games minus Schneider and Markov, what the hell can we lose by putting Weber in? Poor Bob, damned if he does, damned if he doesn't. Just can't please some folks 'round here. Once a Habs fan, always a Habs fan Halté-là! Les Canadiens sont là!!

Lee, we'd have to hope Laraque would first be honest with himself. Do the job he was hired to do.

Link courtesy of Mattee http://www.corussports.com/canadiens/schneider_sur_glace-20090409-150511... Legit? or just because Schneider is on the ice they assume he's playing?

Gary320's picture
I wouldnt understand why they'd put him in practice in the first place.. I think he really does play soon.

We only need 1 point. Go out there and sacrifice yourself schneider! Take one for the team!!! Does anyone else remember how with just 2 games left we only needed 1 point in the 2006/2007 season to playoff rush? And I think we played the rangers, AK27 fell asleep, and then we lost to the leafs and the NYI won and that was it?

46_14_27's picture
The Isles winning had nothing to do with the Habs playoffs, it was sweet revenge against the Leafs. ========================================================================== Should have kept Streit !!!! Go Habs Go

Unbelievable!

Gary320's picture
He's getting there in age.. so I think he's ready to sacrafice a sore shoulder to play.. A 70% Schender is better than seeing Komisarek on the PP.

Gr8stFranchizEvr's picture
nice one. i'll add that a 70% Schneider is better than most of the D-corps on the PP!!!

Gary320's picture
Agreed.

Amen.

forskis's picture
Watch it not be a torn rotator cuff...just a sore shoulder from a good hit on an older player...maybe the Habs are just playing possum and if they make the playoffs will pounce from the tall grass like a tiger on its prey?

In all the posts on here, I may have missed on the status of Markov. Does anybody have an update on his condition? Once a Habs fan, always a Habs fan Halté-là! Les Canadiens sont là!!

Iceberg84's picture
sore knee, out 3 weeks, no updates since they mentioned that. My opinion is that chances are they're resting him as much as possible. If we lose tonight and Florida wins, they'll throw caution to the wind and plug him into the lineup on Saturday. If we clinch tonight, they'll rest him until we're down 2 games in the first round and do the same.

Fansincebirth's picture
Makes sense. If we lose tonight, both are in Saturday..... My kid is chatting to his buddies online and he said that rumour has it that Chara is hunting for Kovy's head tonight in expectation of the first round matchup..... Once a Habs fan, always a Habs fan Halté-là! Les Canadiens sont là!!

what makes you say that?? Any reason for Chara to be going after Kovy?? Whatever the reason, our fighters need to lace up their boots.

HugeHabsFan's picture
Au nom du père, et du fils et du Saint-Esprit. Amen. I'm praying...I'm praying that his injury isn't as bad as what is being insinuated in the media. Because if he ends up playing, and he is injured and we make the playoffs, he probably won't be much help for long. So I'm going with it's less of an injury than we're being led to believe. Please God, from my fingers to your eyes. And a good word in for Markov too please. ;o) ........... "To you from failing hands we throw the torch. Be yours to hold it high." I STILL BELIEVE. If he plays, he is the ultimate in toughness. Just having him in the lineup should inspire the rest of the defense, and the rest of the team.
