"Good possibility" Schneider will play

posted by Pat Hickey at 12h12 EST on Apr 9

Coach Bob Gainey says there is a "good possibility" that defenceman Mathieu Schneider will be in the lineup tonight when the Canadiens face the Bruins in a "must-tie" game.
Schneider, who has missed the past two games with a shoulder injury, made a surprise appearance at the morning skate and, while there was no velocity on his shots, he was skating well and was able to pass the puck.
Gainey said the Canadiens would dress seven defencemen with newcomer Yannick Weber probably seeing action on the power play and as a spot forward. Mathieu Dandenault will probably move to defence withj Ryan O'Byrne as a healthy scratch.
Carey Price will start in goal.

... Strange Season for Glen Metropolit .. Boston.com ..... http://www.boston.com/sports/hockey/bruins/extras/bruins_blog/ ..... (an Excerpt) ..... "We fired [Guy Carbonneau] the first week that I was here and Bob Gainey took over," said Metropolit. "It was like Super Bowl Sunday every day in that dressing room with all the media. It was pretty crazy. At the same time, with the adversity we went through as a team, I think it really helped us right now. We've got two big games coming up. Everybody knows how important they are, obviously, with where we stand in the playoff race."

Does anyone know the link to watch the games online? If so could you please let me know? Thank you!

Laraque and Stewy officially not playing tonight...!!! Why oh WHYYY??!! Schneider is going to the game...and during the warm-up right befor the beginning of the game, he will confirm if he plays.. i think he will

I think not playing Laraque and Stewart tonight is a huge mistake. I like the positive/tough energy they bring and don't we have a score to settle with Mr. Lucic? Perhaps Gainey's thinking is he doesn't want to 'fire up' the Bruins any more than necessary or risk have them go after/injure some of our players?? perhaps Gainey figures we'll draw the Bruins into taking overly-aggressive penalties by being patient/skilled?

Fansincebirth's picture
Where'd you get the lineup from? Once a Habs fan, always a Habs fan Halté-là! Les Canadiens sont là!!

Ok, someone posted that link earlier, went to it, saw it was all in French (Anglo) and closed it....meh! Once a Habs fan, always a Habs fan Halté-là! Les Canadiens sont là!!

Gainey is too professional, and sometimes does things without common sense, no Laraque, no Stewart, NO SENSE AT ALL. Gainey is stubborn sometimes. Calling up Webber (instead of Yanik) and playing Dandeneault on D should have happened before Ottawa game not Boston game.

RC-51's picture
Some people are saying this or that about Schneider playing tonight, all im saying is watch the way he shoots the puck in this clip from today! http://watch.tsn.ca/featured/#clip159603 He doesnt look too injured to me!

Chuck's picture
It depends on which shoulder is injured. If it's not his power shoulder he should be ok to go.

Rest assured that Claude Julien will do everything within his power to not allow the man who fired him to clinch a playoff spot in his building. Can you blame him?

koivuisgod's picture
if schneider isn't able to get any velocity behind his shots why dress him? lets be honest about it, hes not a very good 5on5 d-man. his specialty is his shot from the point on the powerplay. hes only risking re injuring it.i think he should sit out until he can shoot

crabvader's picture
He can QB the PP with Weber, if he can shoot, so be it but I'm guessing he's gonna pass to an open Weber for the shooting.

Gary320's picture
They are dressing 7 D's. So likely you will see Schneider get PP time. Thats not a good time for Bruins to hit players... He will likely play under 10 mins thats what IM guessing. On another note, Id much rather see a 60/70% Schneider on the PP than Komisarek.. god hes awful on the PP.

Can someone please, please tell me WHY either Stewart or Laraque wouldn't be in the line up against the Bruins?? I just don't understand it. At ALL. ........... "To you from failing hands we throw the torch. Be yours to hold it high." I STILL BELIEVE. I WILL ALWAYS BELIEVE.

N.B.habs fan's picture
This is hockey and we need to score to win,not have a boxing match. So try to think like a coach and not a goon match up .

HugeHabsFan's picture
If they thought that way then we could and we know that's not happening. ........... "To you from failing hands we throw the torch. Be yours to hold it high." I STILL BELIEVE. I WILL ALWAYS BELIEVE.

mrhabby's picture
iam shaking my head to. unless of course Bruins are resting alot of there tough guys so there is no point in us sending ours out..but i don't think so.

You and me both.

I'll let you know after the game tonight. Off-topic - The Spits have their hands full with the Whalers.

Tell me about it. I was hoping for a wrap up tonight. So much for that. I'm on my way to the WFCU right now. You going by any chance?? ........... "To you from failing hands we throw the torch. Be yours to hold it high." I STILL BELIEVE. I WILL ALWAYS BELIEVE.

Tom S.'s picture
No, I have a prior engagement. Come back on here after the game, OK?

HugeHabsFan's picture
You got it. I'll have to follow the Habs game on my iPod. God I hope we can pull this off! ........... "To you from failing hands we throw the torch. Be yours to hold it high." I STILL BELIEVE. I WILL ALWAYS BELIEVE.

Tom S.'s picture
This game will determine how we do in the playoffs. I think Gainey is making a mistake not dressing our tough guys....

mrhabby's picture
poor bugger TBT.

VintageFan's picture
Why do you people think that we need 'tough guys' to play against the refined gentlemen from Boston?

Corporate's picture
I think what it will come down to is: 1) Hoping that Schneider does not make the injury worse by playing tonight. 2) Lets see if Plky and company can have some kind of life. 3) Our Goalie will have to make miracles tonight because we have old, tired D. 4) The first line will be checked very closely and don't expect them to do much. But what i lvoe is that for one more day we have hope. GO HABS GO!!!

mrhabby's picture
if Bruins score 1st watch out. we need to score first to take crowd out of game.

punkster's picture
Given our inability to create any goal scoring threat since Saturday we better hope he Bruins score no goals. Price is going to have to play a magnificent game.

mrhabby's picture
agreed. need 100% effort from all players and no passengers. iam hoping we hang in and then pounce on a few mistakes from a very cocky bruin team.

punkster's picture
Or at the very least pounce on a few Bruins.

lavie's picture
So there will be no Laraque, no Stewart tonight. Almost official. Will Gainey despatch Kosto to fight with Lucic?

To those so called experts that have said that Yannick Weber is far too small at 5'10" and 193 pounds to play 'D' in the NHL i must point out that the Blue Jackets have a 'D' by the name of Kris Russell (67th overall/2005) who has played 131 games in his first two professional seasons in the NHL at 5'10" - 180 and was 167 pounds when he first landed a spot on their blue line. This offensive minded 'D' is the brother of the Hab's Ryan Russell now playing in Hamilton.

SmartDog's picture
The Schneider turn-around is weird... so let's assume the doctor said "you need an operation and shouldn't play - you're done", but Schneider himself decided "If I can stand the pain I'm going to play"... and that's what he's going to try to do. The article said he can't (or won't) take hard shots. What kind of injury does this suggest? Shoulder? ~ Listen to the smart dog - he knows his poop!

Persis's picture
Unofficial word on the injury is a tear to his shoulder rotator cuff.

Isn't that what Chara had with the Bruins in the playoffs last year.

mrhabby's picture
thats usually a none starter injury. Bruins will hammer him guaranteed.

VintageFan's picture
Probably good idea for Schneider to sharpen his stick before the match. For medical reasons, eh?

mrhabby's picture
maybe not as bad as we have heard but how effective will he be..strange.

Drakan's picture
Torn rotator cuff.

Is it just a coincidence...or a miracle has happened as Good Friday and Easter Monday is approaching. Thank You God! We really appreciate this. Please no more injuries or slump for Habs right now..I swear I will study a LOT this weekend (especially french) if Habs win. GO HABS GO!!! 808s & Heartbreak is a good album - especially made for Habs fans, thanks Kanye West

From what Team 990 is reporting, Laraque and Stewart will not be in the line-up.

mrhabby's picture
would have liked to see at least 1 to start.

forskis's picture
This would mean that several players will get a shift-and-a-halved.

mrhabby's picture
lol.suppose so. but we need to show some muscle which is why I thought BG would throw one or both out.

Let the fans have fun, sing whatever they want or act like the rogers center and wait for life support

The Professor's picture
When I watch games on tv, I find myself stunned by the difference in atmosphere between the Bell Centre and anywhere else. A great example is the last Habs-Leafs game. In Montreal, the chanting, yelling, whatever never stops. In the ACC, it sounded like a funeral home.

CentreHice's picture
When people refer to the Montreal Canadiens, they say things like honor, tradition, and the birthplace of hockey. As fans, we love telling other teams about the long standing traditions of the Habs. The most succesful franchise in all of sports. The old Forum ghosts. 100 years of hockey tradition. Where does the ole ole chant have a place in that tradition? It's a european soccer chant! Why not sing the "take me out to the ball game" or the fighting irish football song? Those are fun too. Ole ole is such a gimmick! I think that it is hypocritical to talk about 24 Stanley cups and a tradition of winning, and then say that ole ole is appropriate for cheering for the Canadiens.

mrhabby's picture
what about the Yankees as the most succesful franchise in sports...just saying.

forskis's picture
To clarify further...it is actually North American sports...

mrhabby's picture
iam fairly sure yankees, sox , steelers would rank up there as some of the most successful in NA sports history.

forskis's picture
You misinterpret what I meant...just adding the fact the Yankees are the most successful sports franchise in all of North American sports.

mrhabby's picture
its cool man..there both great.

aemarchand11's picture
Tradition.. I beleive the Ole Ole Ole chant is now part of the habs tradition post lockout. I dont really look at it as a soccer chant, as I see it more as appreciation for our hockey club. A hockey club we never want to go without for another season. Go Habs Go is iconic, but all teams have the option of using it, when we sing Olé it shows that we are different from other boring hockey clubs. __________________________________________________________________ Please Beware: Maple Leaf products may contain traces of Lysteria.

The Professor's picture
Are you going to keep posting the same thing over and over again until people start agreeing? Clearly the ole chant is a very popular one with the fans and it's an unwavering show of support to the team. The Bell Centre gets deafeningly loud when we start chanting, and isn't that what it's all about? Being loud and supporting our team? But instead of telling you that I (and many, many, many others) think it's a great tradition, let me instead ask you what you would rather be chanted in the Bell Centre? You sound like the kind of guy who would have opposed the Go Habs Go chant when in started and favoured a golf clap for a spectacular play, but I'm interested to know.

Fire_Laraque's picture
We should all sing the crazy frog song... "OFF WITH HIS HEAD" -Gregory Stewart on Grabovski.

cautiousoptimist's picture
Ole Ole is great because it's as English as it is French! :) 1. www.flickeringpictures.com - not a hockey site, but still kinda neat 2. Josh Gorges on Montreal's attack: "They're comin', they're comin' and they keep comin'. Just line after line, wave after wave..."

forskis's picture
When it first started it was during Theodore's good days...I always thought they were chanting "Jose Jose"...maybe that is where it came from.

forskis's picture
There are no words in Ole Ole that define it as a "soccer chant" just because it is sung there only/mostly does not give it exclusivity...that is like saying people can sing "We Will Rock You" at only football games...it is called adding new traditions to go with the old....people ENJOY and have FUN with the Ole Ole, would you rather that the team ban for life every person who sings it? Also, several of those soccer teams who sing it have been around WAY longer than the Habs and have just as rich or even richer traditions and histories.

Habsrule1's picture
But it sounds GREAT!! That being said, find something better. you may convert some of us! Go Habs Go!! "I can't hear what Jeremy (Roenick) is saying because my Stanley Cup rings are in my ears" - Patrick Roy

All traditions start somewhere. And what about this tradition of destroying downtown Montreal after a play-off series win, eliminate that.

Sorry, but I kill me. this is classic. "Also, other teams mock it (the ole song). Anyone else notice the rangers arena playing the song when they beat us on Tues?" That was sad for the rangers. They had to play it on the PA system cause the fans don't know the words!! Go Habs Go!! "I can't hear what Jeremy (Roenick) is saying because my Stanley Cup rings are in my ears" - Patrick Roy

Hey... Wheres Sergei Kostitsyn? Last i heard he was injured... But looking at the injury lists, he's not on them. No one has said he's a healthy scratch in the past few games.... so... where's he hiding?

Sergei made it clear he has no intention on going to the KHL as he feels it is not where the best are playing. RDS Interview i beleive from the start of the season, sorry I dont have the link but i saw it myself. He talked about Kovulchuk, playing with Andrei, Grabovski etc... He must have a concussion from that hit, because he hasnt practiced since and he was on fire in the AHL when he was called up. __________________________________________________________________ Please Beware: Maple Leaf products may contain traces of Lysteria.

Tanguay-Koivu-Kovalev Higgins-Plekanec-AK46 Kosto-Lapierre-Latendresse Weber-Metro-Laraque Hamrlik-Komisarek Dandy-Brisebois Gorges-Schneider this may not be the exact lines, but this is what it should be...you really can't push gorges into a #1d spot....hamrlik is much more suited to tack on extra minutes....I would also alternate Weber and Schneider every few shifts just to keep Weber on his toes and warm for the PP and to make sure Schneider does collapse....Another change i was thinking might be beneficial was to put Stewart in for Laraque....adds speed and I think Lucic wud be more enticed to dance with Stewy....on teh downside, we can't have the pleasure of watchign laraque skate around throwing lucic off his game and claude julien sweating profusely while yelling at bob gainey...i bet he's wanted to for a while

Qais's picture
I'm guessing : tanguay-Koivu-Kovalev A.Kost-Pleks-D'ag Kost-Lapierre-Latendresse Dandy-Metropolit-higgs Gorges-Komi Hamrlik-Brisebois Weber-Schneider Carey Price 14

Yeah sounds like dandy back on D, Weber as an alternate forward playing the point on pp... Also, Why Higgins on the fourth line? I like him, as everyone else does, in a checking role, but he should be on that third line so he can still have a chance at scoring...

forskis's picture
Higgins with Metro and Dandy has been a great line ever since they were put together...

Fire_Laraque's picture
You're absolutely right of course BUT, Gainey has seen the light. Dandy is better then any of his D-men on the third pair right now. "OFF WITH HIS HEAD" -Gregory Stewart on Grabovski.

I doubt your lineup is good. Weber is playing on the fourth line. "OFF WITH HIS HEAD" -Gregory Stewart on Grabovski.

And what is your good lines? Weber was called because of lack of powerplay, why would you want him to play 4th line? 14

I don't WANT him to play on the fourth line. I am just relaying information I have heard of. Weber on the fourth line. I might be wrong though. "OFF WITH HIS HEAD" -Gregory Stewart on Grabovski.

TO ALL HABS FANS: The ole ole chant has to stop. We are known throughout the league as having the best arena and best fans, but the ole chant is absolutely horrible. I remember ealier this year during an opening ceremony, Jean Beliveau was getting a standing ovation and the crowd started chanting "ole ole ole". I felt so ashamed. How did a spanish soccer chant find it's way into the Bell Centre? It has to stop.
