POSTGAME AUDIO:  Glen Metropolit  Bob Gainey

• At a Glance: The Canadiens fell behind 2-0 early in Game 1 against the Bruins and it looked like all the predictions about a one-sided affair seemed to be coming true. But the Canadiens didn't back down and got a goal back before the end of the first period and tied the game 2-2 late in the second period after dominating most of the period. But the Bruins finally took advantage of the Canadiens' indiscipline in the third period and scored a power-play goal with a little less than nine minutes to play as they went on to win the game 4-2 on Thursday night. Christopher Higgins and Alex Kovalev were the Canadiens that beat Tim Thomas, while Carey Price was beaten by Phil Kessel, David Krejci and Zdeno Chara, while Kessel added an empty-netter with 13 seconds to go.

• Key Moment: Chara scored a power-play goal 11:15 into the third period after Josh Gorges took a dumb penalty in front of his own goal to give the Bruins a lead they would not let slip away.

• What It Means: The Canadiens trail the first-round playoff series against the Bruins 1-0, but they showed some good things in Game 1.

• What's Next: Game 2 of the first-round playoff series goes Saturday night in Boston, with Games 3 and 4 back in Montreal Monday and Wednesday nights.

Hope Lapierre has his head on a swivel. paranoid? BOO! Komisarek should pick on people his own weight and not hide behind linesman. Bruins will complete Boston teams winning championships this decade..... I hope to say au revoir after Game 6, if not before.

Love your 2nd comment.. "Komisarek should pick on people his own weight and not hide behind linesman." - bbruin91 Maybe Chara should heed this.. Don't worry about Lapierre since your team has no balls when Laraque is out there.. I would comment on your other 2 statements, but I will let the Habs give answers to those.. _____________________________________________________ "We don't hang Division Conference Champions banners in this city, we hang Stanley Cup Champion banners!" - Carey Price, Goalie the Montreal Canadiens

After having a few hours to reflect on last night's game, I'm even more convinced the Habs can take the Bruins out. We missed several quality chances on rebounds in the 1st and 2nd period. If we continue to shoot and have someone going hard to the net, the goals will come. Like Gainey said after the game, it would nice to play with the lead. If the Habs can get an early one tomorrow, they'll be in good shape. I also think we need to get in the face of Thomas and get him thinking. Might be worth a goalie interference penalty! :-) Go Habs

- 56 - Actually we look better than the Bruins did last year at this time, think about it.

Why isn't anyone blaming kostopolous' terrible play on the pk for that last goal, he should have been covering chara, instead he chased the puck like he always does and all of our guys crashed the net.

T be fait the boston player to the side of the net did a great job faking everyone out down low...drew all our guys down there with him...it was a set play...Habs wont fall for it again...No cross check to begin with were in a different ball game today me thinks...mighta lost in OT but not like we did

speed kills........when our legs are moving,we dominate.....its time for Bob to light a fire under plek and ak46's arses

If someone has access to the video on the first goal, can I get you to confirm/deny something for me please? When I saw the replay this morning, it looked like Price lost sight of the puck when it hit him and it took about 1 second (seemed like a lifetime) to find it and try to smother it... Yes/No? I'm pretty happy with the showing. Few things to say; 1-With Markov in the lineup, we win that game. 2-With Brisebois out, we win that game. 3-With Plekanec benched, we win that game. 4-With Price putting his mitt on the puck faster, we win that game. So all in all, they played good apart from the 4 stated above. One of which we can't do anything about. (Number 1) "OFF WITH HIS HEAD" -Gregory Stewart on Grabovski.

Well I'm not surprised to hear so many "fans" dump on every little mistake last night. We are going to make mistakes! But we could have won! In fact we dominated the third up to the penalty call. I liked BGL with the first line and Tanguay looked good with Higgins which gave us a badly needed 2nd line. (Yes I know Metro is not Yzerman but give the guy a break...he complements Higgins.) Moving Tanguay and BGL around with those combos was brilliant! It needs some fine tuning but The Bruins have one more thing to think about. I will admit that the Pleks line was ugly. What are the options? Bob will have to make an adjustment and I have faith he will. The D was pretty much as good as we could hope for...and actually good enough. Price was overall solid. We can win this series! "If all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail." (anon)

Overall the problem was that we didn't generate enough scoring opportunities. Good news we generated some due to holes we exposed. Were those holes due to a bad game played by the bruins? I don't think so I don't think there very strong on the blue line. Bottom line our secondary scoring has departed us. If it were to come next game and stay we would have a chance to win this series.

Bob Cole and the CBC ..... utterly terrible !!! At least twice Cole calle dteh wrong player name .. Montreal player of course .. He seems to always know all of the oppsong name players however continues to refer to our team as ..MOntreal is hemmed in ... Montreal is moving the puck .... Montreal dumps teh puck in .. How did this guy ever get in the Hall ..opps I forgot Toronto & CBC ... PJ Stock has a big mouth !!!

Hab_Fan56's picture
The funniest was early in the 1st period when Greg Millan (sp?) said that Price looked shakey early on. But, at that point, he hadn't even faced a shot! When he did face a shot, Cole makes the statement that 'he didn't look shakey on that one'. The next whistle, Millan tries to explain why he said what he did, but came off sounding like a complete fool. I think he really meant to say the Thomas looked shakey (and did based on the rebounds he gave up early) but couldn't figure out a way to say that he screwed up. Too bad CBC assigned the 3rd team crew to this series. And, you're right... PJ Stock likes to hear himself talk and rarely adds anything of value. Go Habs

subscribe to RDS......much more enjoyable.......bob cole has gotta go

not when ya live in TO.

I flipped between RDS, and CBC. RDS is not as good as last year and CBC well no comment. Man was Danny Galivan good!

I'm in NS so I don'tget RDS ..yet..... Next year for sure !! especially with God at the contols in Laff town.. CBC will be shoeing all their games Price's first goal against ... should of been a whistle ..he'll know better to hold on tight now !!

If Sergei and Andrei pair with Plek, we just might see the Kost brothers motivate eachother. As for Dags, he's showing great energy, and he has some talent. So what do we do with him? Get Kosto out of here! I love his energy, but he just lacks something to make it over the hump. Adding Dags to the Lapierre line would be gold. Gives an extra dimension. Plek should be placed on a PK, maybe that would get him going too. And please, please, Markov, heal already.

TommyB's picture
Brothers K, with Pleks....exactly what I was thinking last night. That might give a bit of spark to a sputtering second line. We simply cannot expect to succeed with one scoring line.

Fire_Laraque's picture
Get Plek out there right now. He doesn't want to play god damnit! "OFF WITH HIS HEAD" -Gregory Stewart on Grabovski.

The Habs need to put every Damn shot top corner on Thomas. If they can hit the net that way it would be 6 goals a night... A Monkey can figure that out.

Cookies's picture
Much easier said than done. If getting into good, let alone a moderate, position was that easy, believe me they're aiming just those corners.

Fansincebirth's picture
I think it was a pretty ballsy move by Gainey last night experimenting with BGL on the front line and it paid off in some ways and not in others. BGL had several good shifts and came close to scoring more than once. The Chara - Kovy matchup we witnessed last year didn't materialize last night. If nothing else, last night proved that we can go with Boston in this series. Ok, maybe we're not the Habs of legend, the untouchables but then again, who is? I don't expect to see BGL on the top line on Saturday and I wished I didn't have to see Breezer on D but unless Marky is back, I don't think Breezer is sitting. Not sure if Gainey will chance putting Weber in but after watching the giveaway clinic put on by Old #71 last night, I'd welcome Weber into the lineup. Pleks? AK? Anybody see them? Oh, by the way, an empty net means the opposing goalie isn't covering it off and we're allowed to put the puck in the net boys, just in case you were wondering..... Once a Habs fan, always a Habs fan Halté-là! Les Canadiens sont là!!

The only thing that last night proved was Montreal will not beat Boston!

Fansincebirth's picture
Why so bitter? Once a Habs fan, always a Habs fan Halté-là! Les Canadiens sont là!!

... I was pleasantly surprised at the coaching job performed by Email Bob last night, possibly the best in many years. Now we take note of our success in game #1 and our weaknesses and study it to come up with a little different game plan for Saturday night just to keep Boston on their toes, they are not so cocky now. We cannot give up goals like the Bruins first, i rather have a young prospect make mistakes than a 'D' that should of retired last year and i'm not talking about Schneider and when everybody plays their role it makes it so much easier for our goalie but also for everybody on the ice, no breakdowns. Question for Email Bob: Why can't the Chosen One #84 play the same role as Lucic? ...... We can't go far with one line in the "playoffs", every team looks for balance.

HABZ24's picture
bad experiment puting big .g on the top line, its to combat chara vs kovey but its hurts our offence. got to put tanguay back on the top line.george back on the 4th.we played hard but need markov back desperatly.lose one more and its all downhill.

sholi2000.com's picture
That will be the last time you see that line like that. I think Bob was just seeing how it would play out. In a way it worked, kept Boston on their toes. However special teams won the night. If the boys would have hit the empty nets,it would have been a different story. We are 5 defense short of a winner! sholi2000.com God Bless Our Infantry 2PPCLI

Price looked better as the game went on and I sense that he will play a major role in evening up this series Saturday night! I would like to see S.Kostitsyn line up with Plekanec and A.Kostitsyn. The Habs need to capitalize on the odd man rushes that the Bruins are giving up as a result of the aggressive support their defencemen are providing. Our speed on the outside is the key. The Bruins D is pinching hard at every opportunity and I believe this is where the Habs can win the series.

Yeah the habs played well i think we can win a couple of games but will lose the series i hate to say it but if AK46 and the 2nd line steps up but we need some more big name players i hope lecavailer comes this summer and it will be intresting to see who comes and goes come July 1st! Go Habs Go But inconclustion i will take great pleasure in wating the bruins shake hands in defeat mark my words Boston will NOT win the Cup i would bet anything on it at most the will make it to the finals if they are lucky so all you bruins fans that laugh at us and say we have no chance well you might be right but niether do you if you even do get by us, So like i said I can wait to watch your team do the hand shake at the end of the series with the sad look in there eyes you watch I cant wait to!!

Question what was Kovy's ice time tonight...Curious because a humorous comment Boone made might have some value. He said (loosely) Kovy Koivu with one tired BGL.I used to have a line mate that couldnt go more than 30 secs and then off the ice had the whole line changing becoz of it..I dont want to see Kovy or Koivu on the ice less for lords sake

he played over 19 min, probably a little less than usual

Sick goal by Getzlaf just now. Poor Joe Thornton, tons of skill but just too much of a pussy to ever be usefull in the playoffs.

Watchdog's picture
Why poor Joe Thornton. He is extremely immature. Do you remember the comment he made after losing to the Habs? Something like "they got really lucky, we were all over them. People just don't know how to handle us right now". Well Joe, I think people are handling you pretty well right now. Thye better get going because I have 5 Sharks in my pool.

About the last thing the Habs need is yet another former player with a major chip on his shoulders and a massive grudge playing in the Eastern Conference. They'll trade Halak as next year at the deadline because they can't afford two goalies up for new contracts.

Nah I doubt it. Toskala will be back and healthy next season and with Gerber as the backup, they don't need anyone else. Don't let poor Jaro suffer in Laugh Nation, anywhere but there.

I love the guy but No.

Velavok's picture
A win would have been nice and it hurt that we let it slip away but im happy with what i saw tonight. All in all we carried the play this game and proved we can hang with these guys and compete. A solid road game. It seemed to me that most of the second and the first half of the third that the burins were timid, they were on their heels and they were getting outplayed. I recalled noting this in the first half of the 3rd saying that we needed to score now while we have the push on otherwise they could steal this game. I would have liked to seen bob mix up tanguay and laraque on the 1st line a bit more, especially in the 3rd. Full marks to big george tonight, no dummy penalties, he competed and played smart, what he should have been doing all year. Seemed like the big line was not as effective and kovy set up some great play with fantastic passing as he always does but he didnt have the shots on net or good chances to score. The first line will play better, not concerned there. The 2nd line had a rough one and needs to get going (seeme like a long running theme) I feel like AK46 had that one decent shot from the top of the circle and that was it from that line tonight. AK46 and pleks need to generate more chances, they are the 2ND line, not the 3rd, bring the heat. Price was outstanding, that 1st goal was a garbage goal but just plain unfortunate. Solid effort tonight, we can play better and were gonna have to.

terrier92's picture
You certainly are an optimistic soul I will give you that. I was at game and frankly once Bruins got over normal jitters they dominated physically. George was good though. The problem is once out of offensive zone he is a huge defensive liability and the refs watch him all over ice. Kovelev is super skilled but a total pussy. Twice he gave up pucks to avoid getting hit. I don’t get why you folks adore him so much. His lack of grit is not going to cut it in playoffs. Bruins in 5. Go Bruins

St.Leo Habs Fan's picture
I couldnt agree more velavok, i liked what you said, very well put and you didnt act like alot of other hab fans in here that would fire half the team for a loss (not all, just a few). AK needs to shoot more, like you said and he and pleks need to be providing subsidiary offense if we are to beat the bruins. One thing i liked about AK tonight is that he used his body and delivered some nice checks. What can I say, my hat is off to Glenn Metropolit, what a game, him and Higgy on the PK, what a sight to see. One person we need back is Markov, besides the defensive aspects he brings to the game we really need him for out there for our transition game, which, because of our teams skating prowess NEEDS to be working at 100% for us to have quality scoring chances, that area needs some improvement and someone needs to step up to fill that until Markov comes back. If we minus a few turnovers and our transition game gets somewhat better in game 2, we can, hopefully, come back to MTL tied a game apiece. btw I like seeing BGL out there but a bit more of Tanguay out there would have been nice...GO HABS GO _____________________________________ Little Johnny went to school, the kids had to say what their parents jobs were. Watchdog's picture
If I was the coach, I would never let the team be too happy after a loss. I'd lay into them. It was their game to win and they lost. We need a much better effort from quite a few players next game. Plekanec, D'Agostini, Gorges cost us big. In order to win , EVERYBODY has to bring their A game. If you don't, the Bruins are too good to lose. They took advantage of our weak links today.

ProHabs's picture
You can definately add AK46 to that list. For a guy with his size and talent, he should be playing a lot better.

Watchdog's picture
I really felt that AK 46 was the best player on that line. Maybe he should be moved off that line, because Pleks is doing nothing for him.

A few good hits given and taken controlled the puck at times he's truely all alone on that line I feel for him!

Watchdog's picture
Bob said he feels like he found a second line with Metropolit, Higgins and now Tanguay on that line. Maybe move AK46 to the Lapierre Kostopoulos line. Latendresse was invisible tonight.

Lats is going to have a short NHL career. Slow, not a consistent threat to score, and doesn't have a mean streak if he wasn't french would he have a reg spot on the roster cause in a trade they would get NOTHING back, if anyone would want him?

St.Leo Habs Fan's picture
If I'm not mistaking I thought I saw AK on the first line with kovy and koivu, so maybe game 2 they are going to mix up BGL and kostitsyn _____________________________________ Little Johnny went to school, the kids had to say what their parents jobs were. Johnny said his dad was a male dancer, The teacher asks Johnny "What does your dad really do?" Johnny said HE PLAYS FOR THE BOSTON BRUINS

Watchdog's picture
The problem with that is that you are left with Georges, Pleks and D'Agostini. That sounds like Julien's wet dream. I wouldn't mind seeing Sergei in there at one point instead of Pleks. Last year he got a ton of points in that first round against Boston and he is a major agitator. Certainly one would think that he is still dizzy from that hit, otherwise he is a better choice than D'Agostini. D'Agostini's turnover cost us the second goal.

ProHabs's picture
I hope not. I would hate for AK46 to suck the life out of the Koivu line as well.

Put Tanguay on the first line then I'm happy...I dont like the BGL experiment

Watchdog's picture
Bob's going to adjust on the fly. They went into the game with a game plan, they stuck to it. I have no problem with that. Perhaps in the third period, they should have stuck with Tanguay on the first line, but I understand what Gainey was thinking. First, he doesn't want to lose Georges for the rest of the series. He is still important in the policeman category. He made a pledge to Georges that he would play an important role and did not quit on him Second, he liked what he saw from Tanguay on that other line and wanted two lines with the ability to score, instead of just one line.

Ok I'll give you that then make sure that Tangauy can be doubled shifted abit or then double shift Kovy abit.I do believe metro would and will make a difference to the 2nd line as it stood....face off wins are huge. Bgl has played ok on the 1st line but defensively we lack.Offensively we have to come all guns blaring

Watchdog's picture
I think that the double shifting will take place if the Habs come back home 2-0. At that point you may even want to go 3 lines, but it is not a good idea this early in the series. You may wear these guys out and then they are also prone to injury. Plus, at home, you get the change advantage and can double shift them against choice opponents.

Fair enough!

Just thought Id give some tidbits from being at the game... -Bruins fans were so overconfident talking trash before the game saying sweep or Bruins in 5 before the game...During the 2nd period after Kovalevs goal they were booing the Bruins like crazy and were soooooooooo nervous -There was ZERO Habs fans in the building. I was shocked. Where was everyone? In past years in the playoffs lots of Habs fans were in attendance, but tonight, hardly any!! -I was wearing a Komisarek jersey and was getting taunted all night. They would always say "Komisarek is a pu***". I would respond "Is Lucic one for not fighting Laraque". And almost every typical response was "No need to fight a 4th line fighter. Not fair value to lose Lucic for 5 mins for Laraque"...So lame! -After the game Bruins fans were going nuts. Screaming, honking horns etc. They think the series is already won and they are winning the Cup. I know this has nothing to do with the Bruins players thinking that, but did they not watch the same game I did? If I was a Bruins fan I would be worried about the way they played against a Markov/Lang/Boullion-less team. I have tickets for Saturday too. Hope more Habs fans show up!

St.Leo Habs Fan's picture
Bruins fans are idiots, I found this quite amusing, a bruins fan was asked by a reporter who would win the series? to which the fan replied, the bruins (fair enough) the reporter then asks, in how many games? the fan then said, BRUINS will take it in 3 lmao, my guess is this guy doesn't know much about hockey, i guess he's one of those hecklers u hear about in Boston that go to the hockey game to get drunk for a reason and yell profanities for no apparent reason ____________________________________ Little Johnny went to school, the kids had to say what their parents jobs were. Nice post, good to get a feel from the inside. We are do according to the numbers game.... GO Habs! and bring on lady luck!

Let me say it the Boston way. "No need ta fight a foth line fighta"

Unsung hero of PK duty....Metro He gets props from me

deggy24's picture
Metro was one of our top three players. Very impressed with him lately. If memory serves me correctly, he did well on the draws as well. Head and shoulders above Maxime and Plekanec tonite.

pound for pound Metro holds his own with the puck behind the opposing net to kill off time.I was mentioning I'd like to see him move up to 2nd line center sat night.Yuor right he was the one turning our face percentage around tonight.2nd line needs that.

good observation , plecks is not a second line centre on the vast majority of nhl teams we have problems up the middle.

Nope not the way he's playing right now. Metro would add to Dag's and AK no show.Get the face-offs wins and head that line in the right direction.Instead we lose the face-off and that line scrambles around looking for the puck...Right now none of them are defensive players...It become a waste of a shift.those add up. Considering we are merely an offensive team with the injury to Markov we need to be in the other end. Starts with winning face-offs
