Looking for clues in Canadiens goal

posted by Dave Stubbs at 10h22 EST on Apr 20

This is just thinking aloud, nothing more:

Carey Price was on Bell Centre morning-skate ice fve minutes before Jaro Halak. Price has taken the net at the end the Canadiens will defend for two periods, which more often than not is where the night's starting goaltender warms up.

All of which might be one more way the Canadiens will attempt to throw journalists, and the spying Bruins, off for just a while longer.

Confirmation expected to come from Bob Gainey by noon.

In other roster news, former trainer Eddy Palchak is behind the Canadiens bench, so look for a shakeup there. (Eddy's there, but just kidding on the other part.)

For every success there is a failure. It's the name of the game. We all tend to focus on the negatives and the here and now. We all wanted Mike Ribeiro gone then he goes to Dallas and plays well and everyone suddenly forgets that they wanted him out and blame Bob for getting rid of him. Really it's the long term vision. The Habs are in a better position than they were a few years ago. They have gotten steadily better but have had some hiccups along the way. They will continue to do so but right now our farm has lots of prospects we have lots of free agents at the end of the year so Bob can keep those that want to stay and get rid of those he doesn't want. Then he'll have lots of money on hand to deal with Free agents that lots of other teams wont be able to handle due to large burdensome contracts, and cap issues, not to mention the economy. So what's right...what's wrong, it doesn't matter. Bob has a plan and sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't but we are getting consistently better and everything can get fixed. So i'm not sure why all the negativity and nitpicking on Bob's misses. We all have them, it's life get over it. Bob is a great GM and I hope he stays, but i have a feeling he'll resign. He has too much integrity and i'm sure he still smarts from firing Carbo and feels responsible for the Team's fortunes this year even though he's not the one on the ice. Whatever the case as i said i hope he stays, Bob is a good man and a good GM and he wears the CH on his heart always. Go Habs Go.

Nice post Geoff. Unfortunately, this doesn't change the reality of fickle fans with unreasonably high expectations in Montreal. I hope you are wrong about BG resigning.

Geoff F's picture
Thanks man. Believe me, i too hope that he isn't going anywhere. I just have this nagging feeling. It's always the good ones that leave too early and the bad ones stay for too long. I just hope he's around to finish the job...

Is it 6:00 yet? My nerves are shot, my stomach is in knots, I wonder how the Habs are feeling.

Here's the latest hint: It's not Dryden... No worries though... We've got them right where we want them! http://habsbros.blogspot.com/2009/04/rope-dope.html

No excuses BUT: If the Bruins were missing CHARA AND SAVARD, AND, The Canadiens had BOTH MARKOV AND LANG, who do you think would be leading this series? Context, people.

mickygrabovskiiiilz's picture
the bruuuus are already playing without hunwick and sturm, who are far more comparable to markov/lang in terms of talent. that being said, i think boston would still be leading without those two greats. but not being able to see savvy kiss his teammates after they score would really suck the enjoyment out of the wins. That clown's all-time favourite hockey player is Sergei Berezin, I wouldn't worry too much about him or his intellect. LOL

showey47's picture
I think i saw a stat on here that said the bruins had a worse record without chara then we did without markov. There is no doubt it would be a different series though.

what if? there is no what if's "it is what it is" thats it my friend

showey47's picture
where is the what if? I just see a fact. But thanks for your otherwise useless post.

Fansincebirth's picture
I don't think it's an excuse at all but a cold hard fact. Let's see other teams deal with the crap year we've had and see how they fair. Too many people, especially on this site, are looking for a good old fashioned beheading so they can satisfy their Price or Gainey or BGL or Kovy or any other single player/coach/GM/Owner/icemaker/caretaker are to blame for this season. Truth be told, it's all and none of them who are to blame. A team lives and dies by the collective, not by any one entity. Take any one out of the above mentioned list and nothing would have changed this year. Price is not a bad goalie, Gainey is not a bad GM, BGL is not a waste of skates and Carbo was not a bad coach. Carbo did not adjust well to the twirly swirly 100th season we've had, filled with key injuries that would not go away. I really wish some would start singing a different tune than the usual that they've been spouting every day, several times a day since December. Gets a bit monotonous.... Fire_Laraque's picture
Interesting stats fact; Carey Price lost his last 5 games. During his last 10, he's got a record of 3-4-3, with GAA: 3.42 and .900. Halak, last ten games: 6-4. GAA: 2.31 with .947 Who do you want in nets now? "OFF WITH HIS HEAD" -Gregory Stewart on Grabovski.

Norm0770's picture
I guess Halak, but I'd rather choose Luongo than either. Oh well.

iluucareyprice31's picture
Put price in nets , I have a feeling he is in nets !

Cookies's picture
If Halak's in nets, then Price shouldn't be in the building. Jaro ALWAYS excels when Carey is not around. Whenever Price is there on the bench, Halak just gets scored on so much.

Does anyone know who is coaching our Dmen? Once a Habs fan, always a Habs fan Halté-là! Les Canadiens sont là!!

showey47's picture
judging by our inability to clear pucks and constant turnovers i would say the breezer is.

With Lucic suspended, the Breezer will run wild tonight. No one ever goes full Breezer!

Fansincebirth's picture
Oh good Lord, why did an image of a naked Breezer just pop into my head?!?!?! Once a Habs fan, always a Habs fan Halté-là! Les Canadiens sont là!!

Read my post bellow. It's Jarvis. "OFF WITH HIS HEAD" -Gregory Stewart on Grabovski.

Fansincebirth's picture
Sorry, saw 'defensive' and read "here's how you skate backwards faster than the other team can skate forwards" not Dman coach.... Jarvis needs to be moved out of the way and have a real dman coach hired. IMHO, 99.99% of our problems start with the way our Dmen handle bodies and the puck in our own end. Fix that first... Once a Habs fan, always a Habs fan Halté-là! Les Canadiens sont là!!

I've been saying this for ages. No D-Men coach, no glory. "OFF WITH HIS HEAD" -Gregory Stewart on Grabovski.

Ive had enough of the goalie BS. I think Carey has the goods he hasn't played bad but JESUS show some emotion when you get scored on do something cross check the guy infront of you're crease something the team is fighting he isnt. If he 's gonna play like a BITCH keep him in the club. I can't watch this team go down with out a fight . If they lose fine it was expected but not like this. Thomas PLEKS is Playing like a Balarina NO COJONES. AK46 should go join pleaks at the balet. I STILL BELEIVE but do they?

I agree Price has to get angry and smack someone that is in his crease, jeez that is on of the first things that I was taught as a goalie....The crease is yours and if someone is bothering you or in the crease a nice slash on the ankles reminds him that there is a price to pay or my favourite that I have used over the years a stick between the legs behind the cup and he won't be in your face anymore.

Vid's picture
The habs definitely need to score more than 2 goals tonight. Bare minimum 3 goals. Who the heck will score them? Beats me. I'll go with Pleks, Tanguay and Koivu.

Fire_Laraque's picture
I go with Plek, Laraque and A. Kos. But then again, I didn't wake up this morning. "OFF WITH HIS HEAD" -Gregory Stewart on Grabovski.

It just pisses me off that there are so many GM's in Montreal it is pathetic. If I were Gainey I would resign as well and if any one else had 1/2 a brain they would not touch this team, this is where Coaches and GM come to die the slow death of 1000 cuts from the fans and the press, just brutal..........

Exit716's picture
Bob's a brilliant GM. He took a first place team in 2008 to eighth in the conference. He let Streit walk for nothing, wouldn't even give him a contract offer. Hasn't negotiated with any of the 11 free agents to be, wasted all summer chasing Sundin. Rushed Price into a role he's not ready for. Fired the man he called his best move as GM. Yeah, that track record says it all. He's another regular Ken Holland.

you both should apply for the GM position as you obviously have the right answers.

showey47's picture
i actually did on march 17th after the rangers game. I applied through the canadiens website but never got a response.I guess my pro-active nature and wanting to build the team through size/toughness and skill made me unqualified for the job.

mrhabby's picture
try again..no??

showey47's picture
Should i go the politician route and just say all the rights things to get the job?You know, like promise to draft mainly players from the Q and sign only over the hill french ufa's? That may increase my chances.

mrhabby's picture
no be ur self..its better. political route..pfft.

mrhabby's picture
are the injuries all BG's fault.how do you actually achieve consistency with so many players out of the line up. you would chase sundin too. you think signing this group of FA'S given the way they have been playing would have been a great move.maybe he was told what to do..no??? i'll give u the rushing of price maybe.

Norm0770's picture
If you watch the frame by frame replay of the Lang injury you see Gainey repel from the rafters, slice Langs leg, and climb back up the rope. So yes he is responsible for the injuries.

mrhabby's picture
oh i missed that replay...damn u BG.

Fire_Laraque's picture
Oh wait I wanna play too; Drafted A. Kos instead of Jeff Carter Didn't negociate with Souray and chose Hamrlik Trade Ribeiro for Ninniima His defense coach is Jarvis Next.. who can continue on this rant? "OFF WITH HIS HEAD" -Gregory Stewart on Grabovski.

I want to play also. Gainey said at the trade deadline, that Carbo was his best signing. the last 3 trade deadlines, Gainey does nothing to improve his team, even tho he could have had a big center, Antropov for a 2nd round pick. But no, whe would rather have the little girl, the invisible one, Pleks. And to top it off, he keeps signing Breezer, a washed up 40 year old, who holds the record for being booed the most by hab fans. ok I'm done ranting. your turn now.

I forgot 1 thing. Gainey drafted Price ahead of Kopitar, a terrific young player.

Vid's picture
Losing Souray was a calculated risk in that we had a chance to make the playoffs and trading him away would've essentially said we gave up on making the playoffs that year. unfortunately we lost and didn't make the playoffs. I felt Hamrlik was a bit overpaid but I think he was a good free agent pickup. He hasn't been as good for certain stretches this season (although he got more points) but he's been a solid Dman for us overall.

mrhabby's picture
he did negotiate with souray.souray opted for more coin and went to the lovely city of edmonton to be closer to his daughter.

Fire_Laraque's picture
What I meant was trade him before deadline. Sorry. "OFF WITH HIS HEAD" -Gregory Stewart on Grabovski.

forskis's picture
I believe he actually took about 250k less....

mrhabby's picture
if so i stand corrected but who cares. we signed hammer who is better defensivly..although one could argue that today given the over all play of our defense.

Fire_Laraque's picture
Wow... Don't put your panties in a knot. Just read this; Reporter: "What should your players do to have a chance?" Bob: "Listen to their coaches" So what Bob is saying is that, they STILL don't listen? Even Bob doesn't know how to communicate? Shizza. Keep this team together? Maybe a deaf and mute would have a better chance with this team. "OFF WITH HIS HEAD" -Gregory Stewart on Grabovski.

It doesn't matter WHO starts. We're not going to win a game if we can't score more than 1 or 2 goals, even if we had Luongo in nets.

I am listening to Marinaro on team 990 and he says that Gainey should lose his job, do you agree. Btw Marinaro is one arrogant Ahole.

marinaro is extremely knowledgable when it comes to sports, and if you ever met him, you would be retracting those derogatory comments.

He won't lose his job. He is going to resign well before that. Given the impending sale of the team, he could announce it the minute this pathetic season ends.

Fire_Laraque's picture
I think it's already in the can. I mean, he already knows he's resigning. "OFF WITH HIS HEAD" -Gregory Stewart on Grabovski.

showey47's picture
If that happens, its going to be a crazy may and june in montreal. A new coaching, management and possibly scouting staff would have to be in place well before the draft. I don't see it going that far,but nothing in montreal surprises me anymore. If it does happen,i hope it is the most qualified coach not the most qualified french coach, and i hope it's a g.m. that doesn't give 2 shits about pleasing the french media.

From your post to God's eyes! Personally, I don't think you have a hope in hell of your hopes being fulfilled. My guesses are that the team will be sold to a local consortium that will pick people for both GM and coaching posts based on linguistic considerations and not ability. I'd bet on retreads like Marc Crawford or Hartley. I could see Savard coming back as GM. Although it has not been the norm recently, get ready for guys in the Q to go higher in the draft, unless of course they are Anglos or Europeans. When all is said and done, I don't think this franchise is near a bottom yet.

mrhabby's picture
damn i hope that does not happen.that would make me sick.

What to bet beers on it?

mrhabby's picture
sure..lets go for it.

MikeL's picture
Luckily, the most qualified coach is also French.

They had him, but he now coaches the Bruins!

MikeL's picture
I was referring to Jacques Lemaire.

They had him once too. You want to see THAT type of hockey? There are more exciting moments is a curling match!

MikeL's picture
Right now, I'd take anything that got us the wins.

I'd take the curling.

showey47's picture
pleky with a curling broom? Just another one on one battle he would lose, but then again he would finally have a set of stones

Good one!

Fire_Laraque's picture
And then Lamoriello had him too and fired him 5 games before the playoffs. "OFF WITH HIS HEAD" -Gregory Stewart on Grabovski.

Eddy! Eddy! Eddy!

mrhabby's picture
start Price. this is how the kid is going to learn no other way around it. keep him in the fire. there is not much time left in the season so let him battle.

J.T.'s picture

Go Rags Go! (At least, they have a real "all star" between the pipes!)

J.T. I viewed your Price bashing site. Not impressed.

J.T.'s picture
If you think I've written anything to "bash" Price beyond commenting on his play without fanboy blinders on, that's your issue, not mine. Easy solution? Don't view my site. http://habsloyalist.blogspot.com

I won't. It is some site alright!

showey47's picture
I think price has had more then enough oppurtunities to get his game back. I feel his play is killing the confidence of the guys in front of him.Look how the team fell apart after the hnidy 3-1 goal. Halak looked very solid in the 3rd and i think deserves a shot to start a game. Halak has proven he can steal games this season.

Bryan's picture
Halak also only faced 5 shots in the 3rd period against a team that clearly took its foot off the gas. _______________________________ In Saku we trust.

showey47's picture
price faced 30 shots,1 out of every 6 shots went in and 3 of the goals he allowed were from 25-30 feet out and no screen.I still think ryder was offside on his though

Vid's picture
But that first shot on Halak was an amazing save. Bruin left all alone in front of the net and Halak does the splits.

showey47's picture
then the save on the lucic breakaway also

I agree. His confidence problems are his own, but he has infected the whole team. You and I know what it's like having a guy who can't stop a beachball behind you. Right now, Price is the second coming of David Aebischer.

mrhabby's picture
the whole team is playing badly..its not only price. none of them have confidence except a few vets.

Got2BHabs's picture
But the difference is you can sit Price, you can't sit the whole team. Both games, the Habs played well until the deflating goal.

mrhabby's picture
i know what your saying.guess will find out soon enough.

Maybe Gainey wants the misery to end as quickly as possible?

Got2BHabs's picture
Sure seems like it, since he admitted that he gave up on the team Saturday night.

Habs64's picture
Price is in!

Cookies's picture
I have a feeling it'll be Price tonight. And Halak in the next game, if things dont go well tonight, along with the hopeful comeback of Markov and Lang.
