Lafleur weighs in on Koivu, Kovalev

posted by Kevin Mio at 9h06 EST on May 28

RDS has interviewed Guy Lafleur, again, and this time, the Habs legend let it be known he thinks the time has come for Saku Koivu to leave the Canadiens family.

Lafleur said it's time for the Canadiens captain to go play with his brother in Minnesota. He also said that when Réjean Houle was the team's general manager, he suggested to Houle that he should get rid of Koivu.

And he didn't stop there. Lafleur, who never minces his words, also weighed in on the rumours that Alex Kovalev had been offered a new contract and the captaincy.

Lafleur said he wouldn't mind to see Kovalev return, but doubts giving him the "C" would be part of any negotiation.

As for those rumous about Kovalev, his agent, Scott Greenspun, denied any contract has been offered. He also said there has been no contact from Canadiens general manager Bob Gainey, but expects that to change when Kovalev returns from a vacation in Russia next week.

Kovy is made of: gold. Pure, unadulterated, Honda-driving, gold. Gold with hands of diamonds. Gold with a sexy beard. Gold with a shot so precise, Jesus himself allowed a single tear of joy to stream down his cheek at the site of its beauty. Gold so brilliant, Mr. T should be wearing Kovalev around his neck. Honestly, both these vets will be taking pay cuts. We will see them both in September 100%

For all the Lafleur bashers, probably most of you are in the Captain Koivu for life gang, ask yourselves this. What's the difference between Bob Gainey and Guy Lafleur? Guy Lafleur isn't afraid to speak his mind, some people call it brutal honesty, regardless of how un-politically correct it is. Bob Gainey either wouldn't know what the truth was if it bit him on the nose or is plain and simply incapable of speaking it. “We want an exciting team, a quick team, a fast team, a puck-moving, skating, attacking team, and to do that you need to put players in place who have those skills.” “Halak made a remarkable impression in his first season in North America. He has an excellent work ethic and could become an excellent goaltender in the years to come.” “I like my team.” “My best move as GM was hiring Guy Carbonneau as the head coach.”

Lafleur needs to hit the road, enough of this old bitter man. If Gainey decides to offer Kovalev anything its time for ownership to step in and remove him also. We need heart not spoil rotten rich brats that need 24 hour babysitters

3 reasons for me to pull for Pittsburgh tomorrow night. 1 I always stick up for the under dog. 2 Mario deserves it after all he has done for this franchise, 3 It will look good on Hossa for being a prostitute. These are the best two teams in the league, it will be a great series of speed and skill. Enjoy our game everyone!!

HardHabits's picture
My reasons are: I like Pittsburgh's brand of hockey more than I do the Red Wings', which is starting to remind me of the New Jersey Devils. Sidney Crosby touched the Conference trophy, showing class and courage, whereas Zetterberg refused to, because he's superstitious. I'd rather that class and courage win out over fear. The Hossa factor!

punkster's picture
That's as good a reason as any for me HH. I've had a tough time deciding who to cheer but I've had enough of the Red Army and their everlasting dynasty. Syd is the real thing and while I don't like the whining I do like the skills. The Pens may not be the better team on paper but they have shown a resilience and spark that I admire. So, for the next 2 weeks...Go Pens.

predictions: -the Habs draft a european 5'9" 160 left winger -Koivu, Kovalev, Komisarek, Tanguay and all the other UFA's realize there's 29 better NHL teams to play for and unlimited european options and they make like a newborn and "head out". The Habs sign a overpriced second tier free agent like Boucher to a four year $20m contract -Gainey re-hires Michel Therrien as head coach with Reggie Houle as director of amateur scouting (based on his previous success) and Brisebois as defensive coach(based on this previous success) -the Habs suck, as usual and finish tenth losing their final five games of the season to the Thrashers, Islanders, Leafs, Bruins and Leafs again to end another miserable campaign and Gainey once again promises changes and to be a "player" in free agency

I've been wracking my brain all day, and for the life of me I cannot think of a single other retired star (in any sport) who consistently rags on his former team as much as Guy does. Honestly, can you think of even one other example of this type of behaviour? It's like a compulsion or something...it's just embarrassing.

The Cat's picture
Its true that its odd that he talks so much but its not like hes calling for press conferences, its usually the reporters who go to him as they know hes always good for a quote, but when he says something he usually is right, I agree with him mostly anyways.

Do you mean right like last year with his comment about four 4th lines on the team? How does a team that he described like that finish 1st in the East and 3rd overall in the league? Can you tell me what he's been right about? He's not even intelligent enough to say "no comment" when a reporter asks him a question. And not smart enough to know what his job description is.

Chuck's picture
I doubt that "no comment" is in his job description. The team was playing like crap when he made his "4th lines" comment, and they turned it around to finish 1st in the east. Perhaps his comment stung their pride enough to light a fire under their butts. If anything, the man obviously feels for the team. But his problem is that he's unlike 99.999% of the players that have played in the NHL; he played and thought the game on a level than most players can't comprehend, so Guy has a touch time putting himself in their shoes. Kovy's like that, too.

Hayward4Price's picture
Played at a level most can only dream of I would agree, but thought? I dunno...if he was such a great thinker he'd be in somebody's front office.

MR HAB's picture
Why does Montreal still employ this Man?

Infanteer's picture
The only comparison - and it's a weak one - would be players who demonstrate a dislike to their former team through their actions, a la Brett Favre and the Green Bay Packers. Problems with this comparison: a) I genuinely think Lafleur has the best interest of the Habs at heart. I think he's misguided, and obtuse, to say the least, but his ramblings come from a fan of the Habs. Favre is no fan of the Packers. but, on the other hand, b) Favre is not an ambassador of the Pack, nor ever will be. As a team ambassador, you would expect a certain mutual respect. The Habs have given this respect to Guy, but it has not been reciprocated. The Favre situation is therefore closer to the Roy phenomenon, whereby a star leaves on acrimonious terms. In either situation, however, the Packers and the Habs - and, more importantly - the fans of the Packers and the fans of the Habs, deserve better.

TitoS74's picture
I agree. Then again, he is going to jail, so his opinion is as useful as a bum on the streets.

Go Habs Go. Lafleur is a bitch.

crabvader's picture
Yeah, we know you hate the guy... Lol...

Les-Habitants's picture
I stopped listening to Lafleur a while ago...he never really has anything intelligent to say.

Les-Habitants's picture
opps, wrote it twice

I would hate to see Saku go! This man has meant so much to the organization and I truly believe the players around him, respect him! Now I still think that the prioritites of this franchise are far from deciding who will stay or go. The focus should be on who will own the team and who will coach. If I could choose, I would like to see the Molson boys buy the team outright because of the history between the Canadiens family and the Molson family. As for a coaching staff I would like to see Don Lever as the head coach with Doug Jarvis, Kirk Muller, and Larry Robinson as associate coaches. Goaltending coach, Olaf Kolzig. This is where the franchise needs to start and stabilize itself. The player personnel comes after!

Infanteer's picture
I agree with everything, except the choice of head coach. The Habs need a proven NHL coach, with the requisite experience in a) handling the media, (though Montreal's media is not your typical NHL media) b) handling prima donna stars (Kovalev at his worst) and c) nurturing young talent. Furthermore, Lever hasn't really excelled at the AHL level, except for 06-07, when - backed by Price's heroics -they won it all. Given the oft-cited talent of Montreal's farm system, the Bulldogs' record is underwhelming. Meanwhile, I think Saku is sadly gone already. His post-season interviews indicated to me that he had little desire to return. I could hardly blame him.

Eh... Lafleur says the same thing every year. He seems to really not like Koivu very much... I'd like that Koivu-Kovy-Tanguay line to stay intact but whatever happens will unfortunately happen.

crabvader's picture
He's probably just mad that a Fin might equalize if not pass the captaincy record over a Quebecer.

matraque's picture
A Quebecer? God dammit... You are talking about THE GREAT Jean Beliveau here. Saku does not even come to Beliveau's ankle. Lafleur can say whatever he wants... it's a free country. He's just saying what most people wants to hear. _____________________________________________________________________________ -"I have 21 000 bosses". -Carey Price -Time to end Koivu's reign. Enough is enough. -Come back home Vincent... We need you.

Xtrahabsfan's picture
Ya ,Lafleur is just saying stuff cause he don't care and he's blind too boot and he's happy the Habs suck and so are you!

ooder's picture
you know what would be hilarious...if we do get lecavalier (which we shouldn't!!!) and when he gets older because we would have him under contract until he is 40 and all his injuries will start catching up to him, how people will say we should get rid of him..he's a bum and so on and so forth. only difference is koivu has made a max of 5 million and lecavalier will chew up about 1/5 of the salary cap... --- we need a kovalev

HardHabits's picture
I'd rather have Marleau and St.Louis with Tanguay as top line. 2nd line should be Kovy and two other Ruskies like Antropov and Zherdev. Put Yemelin with Markov and we can have a Russian 5 a la Detroit Red Army.

Vid's picture
that would be nice but we'd be lucky to acquire even just one of those players outside the team you mentioned. Zherdev is RFA, Marleau still has one more year. I do see it as possible for the habs to sign Antropov as a free agent and to trade for St. Louis if Tampa aims to dump salary. I expect the habs will sign Tanguay and if they wanted to could get Kovy back but the habs won't be successful if they can't make enough moves to form a legitimate 1st line that doesn't involve Kovy.

ooder's picture
mm st. louis that would be cool :D marleau...im afraid he caught the joe thorton disease(i.e. playoffchokites). but ya we gotta bring back the red army ;) --- we need a kovalev

habs4_25th's picture
Look the only captain to replace Koivu is #4 Vinny and he deserves the "C" not kovalev, especially at that kinda money. for an extra 1.5 mil on top of the deal for kovy would get us Vinny. We can still make the deal...( well let's hope). "To you from failing hands we throw the torch. Be it yours to hold high."

TheMock780's picture
What is with everyone's obssesion with Vinny? He's a injury risk who's only had 100 point seasons playing with Marty St.Louis and he's not worth his contract at all. He hasn't sniffed that number without him on his line. I'd much rather have Jay Bouwmeester or Ilya Kovalchuck then Vinny at this stage. http://5-10andagamemisconduct.blogspot.com/

HardHabits's picture
Why is it that it's OK for Koivu to get injured but not Vinny? I think Vinny's contract is too huge money-wise but I think he's got more years left in him and more to come.

slapshot777's picture
The problem with Vinny is the contract. 7.5 million at 40 yrs old. Here we are saying that Koivu and Kovy are worth around 4 to 4.5 mil at age 35 and 36, yet we are willing to overpay big time for Vinny. I don't want that albatross hanging over the teamshead for the next 40 years. Shoulder and wrist injuries are hard to say how a player recovers sometimes and he may need further surgeries down the line to correct other problems with the older injuries.

HardHabits's picture
I'd rather Marleau and St. Louis and put them with Tanguay. There's a #1 line!

habs4_25th's picture
When did Boumeester or Kolvalchuck get 100pts in a season? Whats wrong with actually wanting a Canadian captain in Montreal. So because they have injuries we shouldn't get him. to each their own, but if you have the right people in the right place anyone can score. it's the players ability to take it over and above and I think Vinny could do that, don't get me wrong Kovalchuk could do just as good of a job. Just a bit bias on having a Canadian captain. My other suggestion would to try and pry Jordan Staal out of Pittsburgh as our star centreman, we all know that evenually Pittsburgh can't afford to keep them all. "To you from failing hands we throw the torch. Be it yours to hold high."

Infanteer's picture
Since coming into the league 4 seasons ago, Kovalchuk has never scored less than 42 goals, and had 52 goals, twice. In 10 NHL seasons, Lecavalier has scored more than 33 goals only twice, (40 and 52). Furthermore, Bouwmeester is a defencemen. It's hardly fair to compare the stats of a defencemen to a center. And - last but not least - Jordan Stall as our "star centerman?" He has never scored 50 points in a season. I'd take 52 goals over 49 points pretty quickly.

ooder's picture
kovalchuk got 98 points, 91 points ... no he never cracked 100 but this guy is playing in atlanta...those kind of numbers are absolulty unreal --- we need a kovalev

Xtrahabsfan's picture
Agreed 100%

http://www.absoluteastronomy.com/topics/Saku_Koivu a little bio about KOivu but what I found interesting was the part about NHL IMpact magazine's top ten captains of all time....guess who they had at number 10.....saku antero koivu......i just thought it was nice to see and if you read the injury history on saku it is absolutely amazing the guy plays as well as he does.....he should be given an annual nomination for the Masterton.....his knees, his shoulder, his foot, he has one eye, survived cancer and through it all the guy ups his level and plays with heart unrivalled in Montreal....anyone who doesn't like Saku Koivu the person......has some serious issues IMO.

matraque's picture

well at least he's not like latendresse...who just learned how to skate --- we need a kovalev

ooder's picture
that is the stupidest thing i have ever read latendresse who is younger, bigger, healthier and stronger then koivu should be getting more points then him..that is to be expected unfortunately he still can't skate..that might help when you know...you are playing hockey --- we need a kovalev

Hayward4Price's picture
Not to mention that the only time Latendresse scored most of his goals in his career is when he played with Koivu...

TorontoHabsFan's picture
My friend, I say this as a fan of Latendresse...that comparison is jut about the most misleading thing I've ever seen on this website. In reality: Latendresse 2008-9 - 0.46 PPG Career - 0.39 PPG Koivu 2008-9 - 0.77 PPG Career - 0.81 PPG last 3 seasons (the length of Latendresse's career) - 0.81 PPG Again, I like Guillaume...but Koivu isn't nowhere near as bad as some make him out to be.

If you had 23 guys with his character on the roster, Number 25 would not be all that elusive.

HugeHabsFan's picture
You are SO right there. ........... Everything's possible. But it's a long road and a long way ahead of us. – Saku Koivu "To you from failing hands we throw the torch. Be yours to hold it high." I STILL BELIEVE. I WILL ALWAYS BELIEVE.

Everyone knows it was Justin Williams who hurt Saku's eye but I can't remember how his knee got hurt in his second season.....at the time he was the league's leading scorer and that is the injury that really set Saku back and ruined his prime.....I can't remember if he was hit dirty or if he fell or what....all I can find anywhere is that it happened December 7th, 1996 against the Hawks.....HELP????

He went into the corner and Jeff Shantz from Chicago leaned on him a little bit. For some reason his knee just gave out in a freak incident, not unlike his next serious knee injury when he was carrying the puck and eluded a defenseman and his knee buckled.

thanks......i could not find it anywhere and I couldn't remember how it happened.

HardHabits's picture
If I remember correctly, and believe me I'm fried, Koivu got hurt going into the corners or near the boards after the puck. He was kinda crazy that way but it was more he couldn't support what his heart and desire wanted to. It wasn't knee to knee or a dirty hit. It just buckled under the pressure. He was leading the league in scoring at the time. Frig! I've always loved Koivu but sorry to say the last 2 years got me thinking it was time to move onto new captain time. I also can't see the value of keeping a player who gets injured regularly. As captain, it's proving to be disruptive to the team's chemistry. Anyways, I went into rebuild mode well before the season ended.

December 7? The Japanese had to have something to do with it!

Ah yes. Its all comin back to me.

Man, Guy was spot on. He bet me that he could talk some *** on RDS and turn HI/O into a hornet's nest. Damn, it may have cost me $100 bucks, but he is good, very good!

Lafleur was an awsome player. I'll give him that much credit. But other than that he is a jack ***. The "family" should disown (did I spell it correct) this criminal. By the way, didn't the Ranger family adopt him. From what I remember, he quit on the habs and came back to the NHL with the Rangers and Nordiques. Its not as if he even gives a *** about the Habs. He never has anything good to say about them.

HardHabits's picture
That's pretty harsh. He retired because he was being stymied under Lemaire's system. He returned to the Rangers and Nordiques because he later realized that he loved hockey and that he still had some good years left in him. The Habs dropped the ball on that one. They could have traded him, and Robinson for that matter, but got nothing instead.

Getting nothing for talented players, hmmmmmm? That is certainly one tradition that Gainey has embraced fully.

Who cares the guy is still a mother f$#%er

Guy had more talent and drive in his left *** cheek than the whole 08-09 squad combined.

Guy can go and take it in the ***.

Unlike Guy, the current squad, especially the defense corps, is of that persuasion.

Well buddy these are the habs. If you don't like them then why don't you go and watch NHL classics.

They are not the Habs. They're just a bunch of guys wearing the uniforms. No different than a bunch of guys at pickup sporting the jerseys. I love watching them. They are so woefully inept next to the standard for this franchise that they are actually funny, very funny. And, you know the best thing about it? They are just going to be a bubble squad until they get rid of the cap. Killing themselves just to make the playoffs and making their early exit year after year.

Do you really think that it is that easy to go far in the playoffs? Look at Boston. Look at San Jose.

habs-ri's picture
since we all blame the players wouldn't that be Thornton fault? couldn't lead the bruins and same fate with the sharks. Some of the rest of Boston's sports luck was left over from the Celtics, they'll return to the failing B's like the fell to the Whalers this year

It's not like they have hit a five-year fallow patch. Come on! They haven't done squat in over a decade and a half. They should have just tanked for a few years with gusto and loaded up on draft picks like the Caps, Pens and Hawks. Even a complete rebuild takes less than 16 years.

Sure, why not tank so that we can get high draft picks. That would be very classy.

The proof is in the pudding. It works! Wouldn't you rather have the Caps, Pens or Hawks rosters than the Habs. At the end of the day, no one gives a rat's *** damn how you win. Justin Williams damn near blinded Koivu. But, when the tournament was over, his name was on the Cup while Saks was stuck doing Roy Orbison impersonations all summer long.

And how did Detroit get so good. The class of the nhl these days. They did it the right way. Like I was talkin about, class.

G-Man's picture
Right. Like they weren't the "Dead Things" for 20 years. Their time is almost done. __________________________________________________________________________________ Beliveau is the best that ever was.

I'd stow the whole "class" thing. The Habs haven't won jack regardless of "class." And, as far as the "class" of the NHL is concerned, they are actually having a tough time filling their building lately given that they are playing in a "dead" city.

So what did you think of them last year when the won the Conference.

That was their big chance. They snuck up on everyone and had they had a god damn goaltender they could have gone to the Finals and maybe even won a Cup. But, the clock struck twelve and the beautiful coach and trace horses turned into a pumpkin pulled by rats. You can't piss away opportunities like that. The biggest problem with the roster as of today is not a lack of ability, but a lack of effort and heart. You'd have a hard time convincing me that they care about anything more than their paychecks.

Injuries. Injuries. Injuries.
